Fedorov: 'It's Just a Dispute'

Viktor Kozlov and Sergei Fedorov joined their teammates for an informal skate this morning, leaving Alexander Semin as the only roster player yet to report. I'm hearing he's expected to arrive from Russia late today or tomorrow.

On another subject, I asked Fedorov about the lawsuit a Michigan bank filed against him over the summer alleging that he owes more than $2 million in unpaid loans. The debt still hasn't been repaid, Fedorov acknowledged, but he also said he's not broke and he doesn't anticipate the issue dragging out much longer or becoming a distraction.

"It's just a dispute," Fedorov said. "It's been addressed and it will be resolved soon. From our perspective it's never been an issue."

Fedorov indicated that he wanted to tell his side of the story but that his lawyer has advised him not to say too much about the suit.

Supposedly Semin is in town.

Posted by: TJ | September 18, 2008 12:34 PM | Report abuse

If Fedorov said it I believe it. Sergei wouldn't have signed with the Caps if he were broke.

Posted by: uncatim | September 18, 2008 12:36 PM | Report abuse

Tarik: What time are players due to report tomorrow? Since you mentioned Semin may arrive in town tomorrow, just wondering if he will be there at the scheduled time.

Posted by: Just wondering | September 18, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know if the rookie game is/or when it will be on the NHL Network?

Posted by: mlk | September 18, 2008 12:43 PM | Report abuse

WHew!!

Glad to know that a future hall of famer is not broke.

I mean...he does only have six cars which was starting to concern me since one was a 2006 BMW.

Posted by: Donald Trump | September 18, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

Um, no, I don't think the NHL Network is showing the rookie game.

Posted by: Um...no | September 18, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

actually it would make sense that feds would sign if he needed the money to pay back the loan.

Posted by: capscaps | September 18, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

The NHL has been showing a slew of rookie games around the league - just wondering if the Caps-Flyers will be on?

Posted by: mlk | September 18, 2008 12:57 PM | Report abuse

@TJ

You're right, yesterday on the Capitals Report Mike Vogel reported seeing Alexander Semin, but that he wasn't on the ice.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | September 18, 2008 12:59 PM | Report abuse

The rookie game (at 3PM) is being streamed on the Caps website per the Ice Chips email many of us received. The NHL Network is showing games on a delayed basis from the Tarverse City Michigan Rookie Tournament. There is also a rookie tournament in Toronto I believe. That torunament is not being covered on the NHL Network

Posted by: Novaron | September 18, 2008 1:09 PM | Report abuse

I think the point was that if Feds was broke, he probably would've gone back to Russia and signed a much more lucrative deal in the Superleague...

Posted by: mark | September 18, 2008 1:09 PM | Report abuse

PAY UP FEDS! Pay up right now before you cause further destruction to our financial system(s).

Pay the bank before it fails!

Posted by: Zman | September 18, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

No offense, Tarik but what's the fascination with Feds personal affairs? He's not a political figure, so why all the stories on this legal dispute? It's not like it has anything to do with his play which is really all we should care about. He's coming to DC to play center, not be vice-president.

Posted by: ted.b | September 18, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

I know im just a fan but heres what i think. Trade Federov(who missed a wide open net that would have sent us to the second round) and Kozie(even though he proved to be somewhat of a clutch player) for a top line left wing with a left shot that could possibly prove to have better chemistry with ovie and backstrom. We have prospects ready to step up and federov and kozie are just in the way. I kinda think the same about brash and erskine as well. Even though i doubt erkine cracks the line up.

Posted by: capsHSC | September 18, 2008 1:40 PM | Report abuse

Can you just go on the caps website and get teh steam or are there special conditions?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 18, 2008 1:48 PM | Report abuse

@ capsHSC

So when you put your newly acquired LW on the line with Ovechkin or Semin, do you intend for them to line up on the right side, or are you dyslexic?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 18, 2008 1:49 PM | Report abuse

@anonymous

dyslexic, but its pretty obvious what i meant. If you didnt understand you could have just asked. Also, if your going to call someone out on something and be a smart aleck, you could at least go by something other than anonymous.

Posted by: capsHSC | September 18, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

@capsHSC

Sombrero Guy posted a few good blogs from japers Rink the other say. WOrth taking a look at. It breaks down some stats; it was good work. Eitherway, i hear what your saying about a top flight RW. However, two seasons ago, Clark put up 30 goals (at least 8 were Semin shots that knicked his arm and so he got credit, to be fair). I'm looking forward to seeing what he can bring this season. Fehr is the hope for top line RW. We'll see how he does this year. If not, then they need to get their hands on one 2nd tier RW. They can't afford a 1st tier, and with the LW's they have, they don't need one.

capscaps:

I meant that Fedorov could have signed for more money elsewhere, such as Russia.

Posted by: uncatim | September 18, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

I hope to see clark on that top line. Hes def the net presence they need

Posted by: capsHSC | September 18, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Feds likes the team, likes the youth of the team and thinks it has great potential. He was offered more to lay elsewhere but chose to come back here.
His most valuable contribution is the steady leadership and sterling example he sets. His experience is invaluable to the guys who are learning how to win a Stanley Cup.
Oh yeah, everyone misses an open net now and then, I even saw Gretzky miss one years ago.

Posted by: snoshu | September 18, 2008 2:26 PM | Report abuse

I am watching the broadcast of warmups for the rookie game right now...This is Great!

Posted by: MikeR | September 18, 2008 2:43 PM | Report abuse

@ capsHSC
How about all the defensive muck-ups that resulted in at least four unnecessary goals during the last playoff run... I'd rather have a D man back there than a new winger. Stop smoking crack.

Posted by: MNMNT | September 18, 2008 2:46 PM | Report abuse

this is great, this is GREAT!!! (watching the feed)

Posted by: Leeguru | September 18, 2008 3:04 PM | Report abuse

To CapsHSC,

Feds didnt miss that shot... Ovie had the shot and decided to pass to Feds who was expecting OV to shoot it..

Feds didnt do an Esa Tik-a-miss!

Got the live feed running! Got lucky and got out of class early and work got pushed back, so I'll get a few hours of hockey. I'm excited!
Thanks for the TV info and there's no need for the collection. Although I appreciate it.

This feed is the greatest thing since sliced bread

Posted by: Steve R | September 18, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

That was a nice save, but he was giving him the near post, daring him to shoot there. Against the Vets, that's a goal I think.

How surprising that the Flyers had a lot of penalties.

All feels right with the world again....

Posted by: Leeguru | September 18, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Got to the feed a little late, and i have to hide it when ppl walk by, but how have they looked?

How was the goal scored?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 18, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Haha, agreed, Lee. It definitely seemed that the Flyers spent more time in the box than out.

Kugryshev 83 Della Rovere 84

Don't get me wrong, I love the home reds, but its hard to read names if you're not familiar with how each player skates to differentiate them.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 4:23 PM | Report abuse

We're short handed, but it doesn't look like it. The puck's hanging in the Philly zone.

Nice PK.

Posted by: Greg S. | September 18, 2008 4:27 PM | Report abuse

I'm impressed with our boys.

But I'm not sure I should be as impressed as I am -- I mean, Van Riemsdyk isn't here, i don't think, and neither is Giroux (and I could care less about Downie).

"Are we that good or are they that bad?" is what I'm wondering.

Thoughts?

Drinking Partner,

Thoughts? Well, for starters I hate Philly and the Pens.

Posted by: Steve R | September 18, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Bouchard 36 -Perreault 85 -Pinizzotto 90
Osala 48 -Beagle ?? -Kugryshev 83
Lacroix 58 -Morin 71 -Leffler 81
Taylor 93 -Broda 79 -Della Rovere 84

Defense
Alzner 47 -Godfrey 73
Mestery ?? -Carlson 74
Dovgan 49 -Collins ??

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

I've gotta say I've had the same thoughts, Drinking Partner. I'll go with the positive though and think we're that good.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 4:41 PM | Report abuse

yeah we are that good

why didnt joe finley come? Lepisto?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 18, 2008 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Finley is in college. He would have to pay for everything to come, including transportation and accommodations. Lepisto will be there for vet camp.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Osala looks fantastic. Just cleared the zone without a stick. Stole it off the stick of the D.

Another rare penalty by the Flyers. It's 4 on 4

Posted by: Greg S. | September 18, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

thanks JMU! What do you expect from Lepisto? Career potential wise. I havent seen him play but i am excited about the things that i hear! Thanks in advance!

6-0 holy s

Posted by: Tim | September 18, 2008 5:02 PM | Report abuse

I've only seen him play when he gets called up for the Caps. He's seemed pretty solid, He'll definitely be one of the 5 challenging for the 3 defensive spots that are "open" at camp. Somebody else might be a better judge of his talent.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:04 PM | Report abuse

holy crap. this is just ridiculous.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

7-0!

Posted by: Greg S. | September 18, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

I think the young flyers have already boarded the bus and are going through the harbor tunnel right now.....

Posted by: Leigh | September 18, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Tim | September 18, 2008 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Carlson and Osala both throwing down in quick succession.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Osala was jumped, Rinaldo is out for the day. Not sure why Osala was kicked.

Posted by: Greg S. | September 18, 2008 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Why the heck did they bring Rinaldo back out? Osala's just in the box.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Stop panicking! Semin's in town!!!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Who won the game last year?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse

Rinaldo is back in the rink because it was a double minor and there was a possibility that he could get out.

Posted by: Greg S. | September 18, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 18, 2008 5:21 PM | Report abuse

Shut out!!

Special teams did really great. D looked good. Goalies were good. Not sure that Neuvie played that great, though. He looked like he was scrambling back there a bit.

There were some that actually questioned Puckguru's year - long touting of Victor Dovgan and Oskar Osala as diamonds in the rough. These uninformed "Fans" kept insisting that Dovgan and "Double O" were merely obscure prospects at best. Well, after watching today's Rookie Game, I can only hope that their lack of awareness has been diminished somewhat.
For my money, Dovgan was the hands down, undisputed Top Defenseman on the ice today. He did everything but operate the Zamboni. Same goes for double "O." He was outstanding as well. AND, BOTH OF THEM WERE WILLING TO DROP THE GLOVES AND STAND UP FOR THEIR TEAM MATES!! The big club could certainly use a couple of more guys with that mentality. Don't you agree? I'm certain Christobal Huet would.
These two youngsters' performances are just one more example of why there's only one legitimate "Guru" on THIS BOARD. Obviously, that's me. Peace.....

Posted by: Puckguru | September 18, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

You wouldn't be conceited, would you, Puckguru?

Posted by: Greg S. | September 18, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

Who were the scorers, and did we win any of the fights?

Posted by: Excited Caps fan | September 18, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse

We should just put them in the hall of fame now, to save everyone the trouble. No need to see either of them compete against, you know, actual NHL players or anything.

Posted by: frosty | September 18, 2008 6:04 PM | Report abuse

I was at the game and was suprised that Dovgan was not better after playing with the big boys in Russia for a year. He was not bad!!! He just has a ways to go before he sees any time in the big league. I was most impressed with speed. There were times when the Caps kids looked like they were skating circles around the impressively large Filthy kids. Did anyone notice if they rotated 3 goalies the way we did?

Posted by: Bob | September 18, 2008 6:19 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Philly's goalies were rotating, around and around, which is why they couldn't stop any shots! That was a beat down. Carlson looks pretty good for kid. Alzner is playing in Washington this year.

jesus, puckguru, a little pleased with yourself? Perhaps you just guessed lucky.

Posted by: oo7 | September 18, 2008 6:58 PM | Report abuse

it seems that puckguru has finally learned how to spell oskar osala correctly, congratulations, you have only been talking about him for a "year". idiot.

Posted by: ziiiing! | September 18, 2008 7:11 PM | Report abuse

btw, what the f does huet have to do with any of this, because chicago is such a tougher team? thats why he went there? because of little patty kane? moron.

Posted by: ziiing! | September 18, 2008 7:14 PM | Report abuse

puckguru: one successful rookie game does not an NHL'er make.

That said, I like what I see from Osala. I'd have no trouble seeing him play in Flash's place at some point this year.

Posted by: bigonetimer | September 19, 2008 9:09 AM | Report abuse

so I'm a little bit 'wtf' right now about the debt thing. my question is simply stated: How? (and then maybe, Why?) so i'm looking forward to the explanation behind all this, and hopefully the story plays out that he isn't really that fiscally r/e/t/a/r/d/e/d.

And I think as a general rule let's not even write about the trivial short-comings of any of the other players (e.g. that trivial $2M thing..?). Federov was at super-hero status for me and now he's sitting at Inspector Gadget status -likeable, but what the heck else are you hiding under that trench coat? I was happier minding my own business
