Fedorov Playing Center; Brashear Not Practicing

Injuries to Viktor Kozlov (left leg) and Donald Brashear (hand) has forced Coach Boudreau to shake up his lines, and as of this moment, here's how they look:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Clark
Laich-Nylander-Semin
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
Steckel-Gordon-Bradley

Kozlov, of course, is expected to miss two weeks. Brashear, however, is another story. He was struck on the hand with a puck Monday, but Boudreau said yesterday that he expected him to practice today. So perhaps it's worse than orginally thought.

If Fedorov is indeed back to playing center (and it looks that way) that means John Erskine will be in the lineup tomorrow at Pittsburgh.

I'll have more later.

Wow, wait - first comment? Holy cow!

I hope Brash's hand is OK... that's not cool. Hopefully Kozlov's two weeks won't turn into two months........!

@Tarik,

Brash should at least skate after practice if it is just a hand injury right?

Did he get on the ice at all yesterday?

Graham,
I don't hink Erskine can take Godard.

stevo,
I agree I think Godard won that one too. That last haymaker looked like it hurt Cote.

Ugh, Erksine is back on the ice. Not my first choice against the Pens.

BTW in the last two periods and overtime in the Pens-Flyers game, the Flyers seemed to dominate the ice, except for Malkin. I did notice Carter (I think) taking out Fluery with no call. Same ol' Broadstreetbullies. Dupuis winning shot was very nice, and really lucky for the Pens. Crysbaby and Briere seemed to be a diving match not a hockey game trying to get a penalty call -- humorous actually

Truth's request for names:

First, there are two sides to this story. One if we don't win the cup, one if we do. If the cup is won, more decisions will be made to cut costs and get younger. If we can't find the cup this year (I would bet goaltending will be the cause of that one) we are much more likely to fix those few things that are wrong and try again. Let's start with the most likely scenario: We don't win the cup.

We are going to be cash-strapped next year if we don't win the cup. Further requiring us to find an improvement at RW over Koz and his 2.5.

1. IF we can keep Kozlov for 2.5. Then YES my answer is Kozlov. 2.5 is a BARGAIN for a 50-60 point producing RW.

More Evidence. Top line last year counted for 36% of the team's points. That's what we call a balanced scoring attack, the cornerstone for all successful teams. Our lineup is even more balanced this season.

2. Clark or Laich. really, they are the same person. Literally. Look at them.

3. FA Winger could fall here. Who would that be, nobody can tell at this point of the season, but I can promise you, if we miss the cup, it will be goalie related, and we're going to have to make a big splash in the net, leaving less money for Kozy's replacement. FA's I see (just looking at RWs) that fit the $ and size: Latendresse, Sykora (the good PIT one, not the bad NSH one), Bertuzzi.

To me, next season (barring cup victory) is a one-or-the-other situation. If Feds still wants to play, his utility has a place on this team. If we keep Feds, I'm OK letting Kozy go. If Feds goes... I can see us keeping Kozy based on his utility as a C or RW.

I'm thinking Erskine-Gil and Bradley Godard.

As much as it sucks not having Brash out there, with a hand injury I would prefer him not to make it worse and as quickly as Godard and Cote went at it, it wouldn't take long for Brash to drop the mitts.

Posted by: pants | October 15, 2008 11:15 AM | Report abuse

FFS -- I agree in most aspects, but will add a few factors:

RW -- Fehr has a break-out season and replaces Kozlov for less money (maybe, not a prediction)

LW -- Flash has a break-out year, earning 2nd line LW, allowing Semin to move to the 1st line and Fehr to the 2nd line (if Fehr has a break out season)

LW/RW -- Laich repeats his performance of last year, earning time on either wing on the 1st or 2nd line

Goalie -- Varmalov plays awesome for the Bears, helping them to win the Calder, earning a promotion to the Caps -- JT or BJ's replacement depending on how they play this year

Posted by: JIM | October 15, 2008 11:21 AM | Report abuse

Regarding LTIR, I don't think having Kozlov on the shelf will build any extra space for the trade deadline. The LTIR excpetion only gives teams the ability to exceed the cap to replace an injured player. It does not add that injured player's salary to the upper cap limit.

from NHLSCAP.com "For players that the team has filed an LTI exception, the team is allowed to exceed the cap by up to the amount of the injured player's salary with as many replacement players as needed, provided that when the injured player is activated the team comes into compliance with the cap immediately. The team does not get to automatically tack on the amount of the injured player's salary to the Upper Limit - an example as illustrated in Article 50.10(d) of the CBA illustrates this point: "

I'd rather see...

Fedorov/Jurcina

Erskine in the booth so he can figure out the solutions for all the bad he has caused, namely Global Warming, Darfur, the feud between Nicole Ritchie and Paris Hilton, El Nino, Apartheid, Advanced Calculus, mens capris pants, the Jonas Brothers, the horrible food at the VC, the English Patient, no breakfast at McDonalds after 11am, Anitas not being open 24/7 and mild to severe rashes.

Posted by: stevo | October 15, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

To the suggestion of Ovie/Backs/Gaborik.

Would it be a fun line to watch? Yes. I would argue Ovie/Backs/Semin would be more exciting and productive.

The largest problem with this suggestion is both Gaborik's PRICE and his brain. The kid is gifted, but EVERY SINGLE YEAR it's... "I'm not gonna play till I get a new contract..." or "Trade me y'all suck." Only to find him lacing it up for MIN each year. We've got a group of guys who, for the most part sofar, have not been demanding the world from GMGM and Ted's pockets. Bringing 10 here would cause problems we absolutely don't need.

And, good luck finding a way to fit 2x 100M contracts on your "stanley cup" roster. If you haven't noticed, that's what Gaborik wants.

That sucks that Brash is hurting. Im sure Erskine would love a rematch with Godard though and he should have something to prove after being scratched. Hopefully he'll be a decent replacement if the Donald cant play.

FFH -- (that scares me cause me thinks FFH works for the FannyFred. those boys didn't work they just posted to this site.)

There you go overthinking the game. Why are you so hung up on the salary cap. You must be one of those few honest accountants in the world. There are a gazillion scenarios that can take place to get the right person on the wing. And why the worry on Feds leaving. Jeez Louise come on. He is golden right now and he is not going anywhere as long as we are winning. They can't they are addicted and they only have one career you know. Remember don't overthink it. Accounts do worry alot don't they FFHousing?

Think trade not pickup in the FA. Think trade think trade how many times do I have to say it think trade. Why do you think so linear? Mix it up in that mind of yours.

good effort though on coming up with names.

@JSchon,

I could not agree more with your line combonations. Feds needs to stay on D and keep erskine out of the line up. I have to say i was waiting on these injuries to happen to see borque or beagle, maybe giroux get their chance with the big club. Injuries are unfortunate, but they happen and i think the caps can find something positive out of it.

truth

I care about the cap cause it matters. I could sit here all day and proclaim that we should replace Kozlov with Hossa next season. (WOW...) but the simple truth there is we would not be able to afford him.

Looking at this team in 2-3 years, we have quite a few young guys we have to worry about resigning. Semin, Laich, Fehr (maybe, he's in my doghouse this year like Flash was last year) and Backstrom. Locking these guys up will not be cheap. Semin especially. How long will he want to play in the shadow of Ovie? As much as he could help make this team great, if he desires to be a team's #1, we're going to have to bring the billz.

The same concept applies to trades. We can not trade Kozy for anybody who costs more than him. This isn't the days of the Jagr trade. Teams can no longer trade a guy to another team and pay for a portion of their salary. You accept a player via trade, you get his contract as-is.

That being said, I have to go do some actual work. Yes, I do have a job, and I should have been getting stuff done this AM, but the Kozy comments from yesterday just had to be responded to :-)

Posted by: FFS Enough | October 15, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

I'm not insulting I'm telling the truth Kozlov hurts Ov's line. Imagine a more dynamic tough forward the goes to the net and is not a pansy. Imagine what it would do for Ov's game. Free thinking.

Kozlov is as good as gone. As a hockey fan I consider him a slug. Digs the corners? Are you kidding he had 18 penalty minutes last year. Is that digging or tip toeing through the tulips.

Where is it? Sounds like my kind of place. I am originally from DFW. I went back this past weekend. My brother (he is in North Dakota) and I had mexican for lunch (The famous Joe T Garcia's in Fort Worth) and TX BBQ for dinner on Thursday, Mexican for lunch and TX BBQ for dinner on Friday. Saturday we decided to go for something different and had BBQ for lunch and mexican for dinner.

I can't find either one any good here.

BTW - breakfast was mexican all three days. There is nothing quite like a Chorizo and Egg burrito with green tomatillo sauce and jalepenos for breakfast. Especially for a hangover.

I agree with you. I just don't think you need to insult people (JIM, FFS) to make your point. If anything, arguing too forcefully detracts from your arguement. I have long felt that Kozlov has never lived up to his potential. I would rather play guys like Fehr and Stecks.

Posted by: kenwood | October 15, 2008 11:57 AM | Report abuse

FFH -- why do you worry so much? Good thing we have hockey in our lives otherwise we would be sitting at our jobs watching our 401ks blow up. We work hard to watch it go up in smoke. Makes since but hey that is what they want you to believe.

Listen I'm not a financial wiz but since I am a simple man I know how the Caps will get better. Don't worry about the cap as adjustments will be made -- you know kind of like a "New Deal."

Fehr will be gone sooner than later. We will get the winger we need trust me.

Vienna one is off 123. Herndon one is at the corner of...Elden + Monroe I believe. It's near the old abandoned church. And in Chantilly, it's right at the corner of Centreville Rd and 50.

Is Jim actually the real Kozzy? 18 penalty minutes! It just boggles the mind to think that others actually believe this guy is a corner dweller (and good for OV).

Things I don't understand (work, 401k, certain politician's stances on key issues) scare me. I use hockey as a means of comfort, as it's something I understand and can mentally manage. Don't worry, as stressed as I may sound trying to defend Koz's production vs $value, it is actually refreshing to me, as it's something I can grasp and understand.

Now, on to Fehr. If this kid can't shine in his time these first few months, look for him to get the Eminger treatment this season. I like Fehr, and his injury concerns are quite sad, but if he can't hack it, he can't hack it. If some other team wants to give us picks for him, by all means, GIMME GIMME.

Malkin did look slow because like a Russian T-72, he was busy running over everything in front of him. He had a lot more mojo than the other Pens. The Flyers controlled the tempo in the 3rd and OT. Dupuis and Fleury saved them from earning a loss. Crosby was fairly ineffective, passing to the Flyers more often than his teammates.

Rosa's may be a lot of things, but what it is not is Mexican.

Truth
There are very few places to sit in the lower bowl that are good for watching the game on the ice. Good for watching individual players, but not the game. The best seats in the house are club level but Abe owns those and I refuse to give him more than what I spend on something to drink. That leaves the 400 level for those who actually understand the game of hockey and like to watch the play develope on the ice. Speed and power of individual players is cool once in a while but I would not trade my seats up high for seats near the glass and since I have been a season ticket holder more than 10 years I have had many offers to move at significant discounts to what others have been paying for the same seats. Dont want to move. BTW FFS has a point grow up and you will get more respect.
