Fehr Recalled, On First Line

In desperate need of some secondary scoring after being shutout for the second time in three games on Saturday, the Caps recalled prospect Eric Fehr from Hershey today. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound right wing, who missed 10 months with a mysterious back ailment, has been assigned to the first line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

Viktor Kozlov, meantime, returns to the second line as a center, while Brooks Laich and Boyd Gordon to return to checking roles. (Laich and Gordon had been rotating at center on the second line.)

Here are the forward combos:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fehr
Fleischmann-Kozlov-Semin
Laing-Steckel-Bradley/Pettinger
Brashear-Laich-Gordon

he 'D' pairings are the same.

Fehr had six points (two goals and four assists) in 10 games with the Bears, including an assist on his first shift back in Hershey. Now it's time to see if he's ready to contribute in the NHL.

Update:Fehr says he's 100 percent recovered from the injury that, for a while, appeared to be threatening his career. I asked him if the problem was a compressed nerve, he said it was herniated disc that just got worse and worse. He said it slowly began to improve in December after he started working with the Canadiens' osteopath, Dave Campbell. When Fehr returned to Hershey, defenseman Josef Boumedienne flew in his personal osteopath from Finland to work with Fehr.

"I'm back to 100 percent," Fehr said. "I've played the last 10 games, I've felt great and there's been no issues. I just need to get back into game shape. But I'm pretty comfortable with the way I'm in shape right now."

"It's sort of like the start of the season for me," he added.

Update:Looks like Brent Johnson will get the start in goal and defenseman Steve Eminger will be scratched. One forward will also have to be scratched. Bruce Boudreau wouldn't say who it will be, but based on today's lines, I'm guessing it will be Matt Pettinger. That's subject to change, though.

great hopefully he will be the secondary scoring we need......also tarik if he plays.......who sits? and is Clark out there? or did he skate before practice like usual?

As much as I want to see Fehr play... I don't want him to be rushed... we need him healthy!

Posted by: FrankM73 | February 4, 2008 10:16 AM | Report abuse

So after the game Sat, I just felt like it was such a squandered opportunity to win over more fans. After the Ovie big game, people were prepared to shell out the money to come see the Caps. Great crowd Sat...lots of stuff going on before the game...RESULT - Complete dissapoitment leaving the average fan dying for a refund.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 4, 2008 10:17 AM | Report abuse

@ SA-Town

Ya it was a bummer but if the fans that are "dying for a refund", didn't understand how well Atl's goalie was playing to stop all 30-some shots... Do we really want them?

One loss and already someone crying. GG.

@SA-Town

Sadly you are correct. I put together quite a large group of people who are not currently hockey fans (they were enticed by the bar crawl aspect) many of whom had not been to a hockey game in 5 or more years and they said the game was boring. Unfortunately it was the least satisfying of the 9 games I have been to this year. Granted these people were not likely to become huge fans but still, it was an opportunity wasted. Oh well

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | February 4, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

Back to topic, while I am excited about the possibility, i fear we may be rushing Fehr back. Still, something has to give and we need someone other than #8 to get on the score sheet.

SA-Town:

A hard fought game is always a pleasure to watch - in essence it was a one goal game. We are exactly where we thought we would be last summer...vying for a playoff spot. If you build it, they will come...

@Opita,

Semin, imho, has taken several bad penalties the last couple of games. The last two games the Caps have gone from 5 on 4 to even strength 4 on 4 because of Semin stick penalties in the offensive zone. Both times @10 seconds into a Caps power play.

Erskine, however, leads the team imho in taking bad penalties.

Tarik-as an aside, can you find out if the Caps are planning to do anything to get the Sunday Rangers game televised here in DC. NBC isn't going to do it.
Thanks.

Be careful of your expectations. Fehr has two goals in ten AHL games. He may be an improvement over Fleischmann and his one goal in his last 18 games, but thats not something I would even expect right now.

He has 2 NHL goals. I have hope but I very low expectations.

Posted by: capshockey98 | February 4, 2008 10:49 AM | Report abuse

@Zz
I have to agree with you that would be a good line, I think. I just hate the idea of splitting up that first line. That first line should stay and have someone centering semin and fehr. I think stec is a good choice in there.

In regards to rushing fehr back:
I don't think hes been rushed back because he was out on the ice for a long time before he came back to play. 6 points in 10 games is pretty good for coming bak with as bad as an injury it was for fehr, i just hope he can get back and is able to play in the nhl. I think he should be fine though.

Posted by: Thomas | February 4, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

Thanks for the updates as usual Tarik,

How does Fehr look out there in practice on a line with OV and Backis?

Posted by: Chris | February 4, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

Looks like Petty is going to be warming the bench. He's definitely odd man out. Brads is playing to well to sit. Laing, Steckel, Bradley line has been solid.

Tarik, Any rumors about a trade? When Clark returns (I'm hopeful!), we'll have to many on the roster - who goes to Hershey or is traded? IMO, Laing has more than earned a spot here!

Posted by: Tracy | February 4, 2008 10:56 AM | Report abuse

Good one DebCapsFan! Lets sit Semin. LOL.

Posted by: CAPStan | February 4, 2008 10:58 AM | Report abuse

This looks like a "we didn't win on Saturday, time to panic" type move. OV Backs and Kozlov have been playing well together and putting serious points on the board.

We won't see any Kozlov to Ovechkin passes anymore, nor anymore Kozzie scoring on rebounds.

I hope Fehr gels quickly...

Posted by: Raber | February 4, 2008 11:00 AM | Report abuse

The injury wasn't mysterious beyond the capitals keeping it on the down low...it was a compressed nerve.

Posted by: usiel | February 4, 2008 11:02 AM | Report abuse

Sit Petty and coach Semin in teamwork and the stupidity of offensive zone penalties. Have Ovie sit in on Semin's coaching session for when Semin pretends not to understand English. Plus, peer-to-peer counseling may be what he needs to get his act together.

Looking forward to seeing what Fehr can do tomorrow night!

Posted by: Jill | February 4, 2008 11:02 AM | Report abuse

I hope Fehr is all that he is cracked-up to be and more. IMO, I believe what the second line needs the most is a good playmaker centerman.

@Fehr
Enjoy your honeymoon with the fans, they will turn on you as soon as make a mistake.

Posted by: CAPStan | February 4, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

@Jill,

"Peer to peer counseling".. Is Brash doing the counseling? Negative reinforcement?

Posted by: Steve R | February 4, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

I think they should keep the top line together.

Fehr should be the RW on the second line.

Semin hasn't played well but he will, eventually.

That means Fleischmann could sit, but I'd rather play him and sit Pettinger. What exactly is his role on this team?

I've called it a compressed nerve a few times. But I'm not sure that was the final diagnosis. I'll ask him today.

Trust me..Im not jumping ship, or over-reacting about Sat's loss. I just have been going to games for a long time, and Sat was about as frustrating as it gets. My point was that I really felt it went beyond the ice...all the way to the rafters..With a win or two this week, Im sure the "buzz" will be high for Fridays game, and we'll have our shot at a "maurqee" win for the team/organization.

Hey Jill, I hope Opita doesn't see your post. But is it true that Semin is pretending not to speak English?

Posted by: CapStan | February 4, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

@O'Neal,
I'm not crazy about breaking up that top line but when you get shut out 2 out of 3 games and all your scoring in the middle game comes from one line, something has to be done. Kozlov is a better complement to Alex, but something's got to be done to get Semin on track.

Posted by: b.orr4 | February 4, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

@Sombrero Guy,

Mixed feelings as well. IMHO 25 is going to be a better center on line 2 than 15 or 21, but that 1st line has some major chemistry going..

Posted by: Steve R | February 4, 2008 11:16 AM | Report abuse

Kozlov is starting to produce, its a good thing to get him on the second line to try to boost its productivity, because we know one way or another ovie is going to produce on the first line.

Tarik--sorry for a really off topic question, but do you by any chance know if the Ducks are planning to skate when they're in town visiting the White House Wednesday? Posted by: Brian Sutherby Fan | February 4, 2008 11:20 AM | Report abuse

We need people to start crashing the net. Clark was great at that, and we are missing that aspect. Time for some other Caps besides Ovechkin to "man-up".

@CAPStan
I am not that bad. I was just trying to make a point, but Jill is making it very well for me, I just hope people see it.

Posted by: Opita | February 4, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Personally I love this move - Fehr is a goal scorer and putting him Backstrom gives Backs another option and it makes the D have to worry about someone other than Ovechkin. Meanwhile the second line gets to see if the problem really has been the lack of offensive talent at the pivot.

I like the timing too - enough time to see if the Capitals need to make a trade for another top six forward.

Posted by: dmg | February 4, 2008 11:24 AM | Report abuse

With all due respect, breaking up the top line is a little dumb IMHO. Kolzov, Backstrom and Ovechkin have scored 30+ points in the last 10 games or so. Tarik can correct me if I'm wrong. And to put a guy who hasn't played real hockey in a year on the top line while the Caps are pursuing a p-o spot is irresponsible. That's my $0.02.

Tarik,

Any indication that Semin will get a bird's eye view tomorrow in Columbus or has BB sternly told him to quit with the laziness and play hockey for a change?

Posted by: Finn | February 4, 2008 11:31 AM | Report abuse

btown,

I believe that game is going to be broadcast on NBC

Posted by: dmg | February 4, 2008 11:32 AM | Report abuse

Finn,

I totally agree with your assessment. I don't think there is a need for Fehr to play a 1st line role just yet. Let him start slow and build up. The team might have been shut out 2 of the last 3, but your correct that the 1st line has put the majority of the points up on the board. It's not the 1st line that is broken....it's the other lines, the d-men and of course the goaltending. So, why try to fix something that isn't broken on the 1st line.

Posted by: Mitch | February 4, 2008 11:32 AM | Report abuse

Finn,

Fehr's numbers this year havent been steller butlast year Fehr put up 21 goals, 19 assists, an 18.33 shooting percentage and was +20 in 40 games with the Bears.

I think this is worth a shot. If it works, great. It it doesn't, I assume McPhee will turn to the trade market.

Posted by: dmg | February 4, 2008 11:34 AM | Report abuse

I don't see a problem mixing it up... I wouldnt be surprised if BB went back to Kozy-Backs-OV soon but itd be a good way to jumpstart Fehr.

I totally agree with SA-Town. This was a wasted opportunity to bring in more fans. The VC was "packed" and it would have been a great time to show what the Caps were all about.

Unfortunately it wasnt a run and gun game. It was a good game but it takes time for the casual fan to recognize this.

For those that ask why would we want a fan who couldn't see that this was a good game... I'd like to keep hockey in DC and to do that we need all the support we can get.

Its this attitude that no one can join our little club that keeps DC in question as a hockey town.

Posted by: Metal Cap | February 4, 2008 11:35 AM | Report abuse

Mitch,

I don't think the goal was to break up the top line, but rather to get someone with more offensive ability playing center with Semin and Flash. The Caps thought the only way they could do that with their current group of players was to move Kozlov into that role; I agree with them and I think that Fehr is the best option from among their current players as to who should fill the hole on the first line with that change.

Posted by: dmg | February 4, 2008 11:37 AM | Report abuse

Mitch,

Fehr is coming back from his mysterious injury. He needs to start playing 5-7 minutes per game, and not 18-20. Someone said that Backstrom will now have another option who to pass. I don't think so. I think the Caps are back to two people (Backstrom and Ovechkin) playing on the first line. It will actually be easier for the oposition defense to shut them down. Kozlov can really hold the puck well and use his body. I hope Fehr is moved down to the 4th line. Everyone has to prove themselves.

Posted by: Finn | February 4, 2008 11:37 AM | Report abuse

dmg,

Last year Semin had 38 goals. So what? We're in 2008. Forget about last year. Especially in the AHL. What Fehr did last year doesn't matter. He has to prove himself yet again at this level. This is the NHL. And the Caps have a legit chance to make the p-o. Now is not the time to experiment. We're in the critical stage of the season. Other teams are taking the Caps for real now. Every game matters. Don't fix it if it ain't broken. We now have a true first line that we can rely on.

Posted by: Finn | February 4, 2008 11:41 AM | Report abuse

Well, I guess we can all sit here and speculate all we want, but the real talking will be done on the ice and hopefully everything that takes place is for the positive.

Posted by: Mitch | February 4, 2008 11:41 AM | Report abuse

The NBC page says they are broadcasting the Ducks/Wings game and it was not mentioned during yesterdays Ranger game so who knows. Comcast should show it. Good thing I'm going.

Posted by: erika | February 4, 2008 11:42 AM | Report abuse

@Finn,

That's three posts and you didn't mention Olie and crappy goaltending once. That has to be a record.

What would you recommend to get more scoring out of the second line?

Posted by: Steve R | February 4, 2008 11:43 AM | Report abuse

Breaking top line is a neccesity... you've gotta make this second scoring going... Hard times require hard measures... When Laing was recalled, nobody thought he would stick for more than a couple of games. So Fehr addition might help or not, but BB is trying something, and I am all for it.

Benching Semin makes no sense because this guy can explode any minute. I don't think you can teach him anything, he is just as stubborn as Emery.

I'd rather try to put Semin on a right wing with AO, because when the other team concentrates on AO, it opens a lot of space for a guy like Semin with his wicked wrist shot. Kozlov doesn't score much usually and look how being on AO line has changed it.

Posted by: mj | February 4, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

Typically if there are multiple games in the NBC national timeslot then you'll get your local game. So, most likely if the Rangers/Caps game is on at the same time the Ducks/Wings are then we should get the Caps game since it's local. If not, then CSN should have it.

Posted by: Mitch | February 4, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

Finn, I get your point about players having to prove themselves, but the Caps are one of the few teams (in the past) that would never give ice time to solid prospects to show they belong. It's tough to prove yourself as an offensive player (and that's his role) by playing 5-7 minutes of ice time on a line with Brashear and Laich (or whoever) whos job isn't to score.

I'm not saying that Fehr necessarily should get 18-20 minutes of ice time a night, but I think he deserves a shot on the top 6 lines to show what he's got. He has shown flashes of his ability, and with the lack of consistant scoring I don't see a problem with giving Fehr a shot.

One thing tho...by calling him up, and playing him on the first line, he needs to get at least a few games in the spot to get adjusted. Playing him a couple shifts and then dropping him to the 4th line doesn't help the team, nor his development.

Posted by: Jeff | February 4, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

@Steve R,

My recommendation for more scoring on the second line......SEMIN staying out of the Penalty Box!

Posted by: Mitch | February 4, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

But then again, putting Semin with AO won't address second scoring...

Posted by: mj | February 4, 2008 11:47 AM | Report abuse

FYI, if you get the Center Ice package you should be able to pick up the MSG coverage of the Caps game on Sunday.

Posted by: Mitch | February 4, 2008 11:48 AM | Report abuse

I dunno Finn.
The other possiblity is that Gabby thinks Backstrom and OV will be okay without Kozzie. It could be that putting Kozlov with Semin is an attempt to jump-start Semin a bit.
It does concern me a bit that Fehr has not racked up a bunch of goals in Hershey. But maybe he just needs to be playing with a true "set-up guy" like Nicky.

The other thing about the line combos is that they are not written in blood or anything. BB juggles them as he sees fit during the game.
If Fehr is not handling the NHL pace very well, it will be easy to control his minutes.

Posted by: pmoravek | February 4, 2008 11:51 AM | Report abuse

Steve R,

Olaf who?

Jeff,

Top 6 doesn't mean top 3. OK, let Fehr play on the 2nd line instead of Fleishman (sp). Move Semin to LW where he belongs!

I still think that the top line -- the ONLY line constantly producing -- must be kept intact. All six players on the first two lines will have to readjust. Every one of them. It's not good. Every game, every minute matters.

Posted by: Finn | February 4, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse

Best case scenario, Fehr crashes the net. He is a big guy with good hands and a good shot.

I'm not too concerned that he wasn't scoring much in Hershey; I'm sure he was focusing on getting used to being back on skates again.

If it doesn't work out, I suppose Bruce could always put Kozlov back on that top line.

And here's a goalie-related comment -- if Johnson stinks up the joint on Tuesday, Machesney should be the next Bear to be recalled..

One thing is clear, all former Hersey Bears players stopped playing recently except Schultz. Is honeymoon with BB over?

Posted by: Schultz | February 4, 2008 12:02 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Finn in that we should not break the first line, it is the most cohesive line that the Caps have. The line that needs the most attention, in my opinion, is the second line. I rather have one potent line and a less than mediocre line than two mediocre ones, which is what will happen if we start mix and matching them.
As for Fehr going to the fourth line, I don't know much about him to comment on it, but it would not be out of character with BB to do that, remember, he played backstrum there for a game or two.
A question to those who are familiar with the farm system, is there a centerman in there that can be brought up and improve our second line?

Posted by: Opita | February 4, 2008 12:04 PM | Report abuse

I initially was concerned about breaking up a first line that is working. However, something does need to be done on the second line.

I guess I will give BB the benefit of the doubt when it comes to Fehr and Kozlov. I also remember when Laing was called up and many were questioning that. Well not anymore!

Does Fehr have a picture for the big screen? Based on the success with Laing, I think he may need one.

Posted by: Kim | February 4, 2008 12:05 PM | Report abuse

Never seen Fehr play, but my guess is hes not being added to score goals. What the first line needs in not a goal scorer or a playmaker it has both of those. What the 1st line needs is a net crashing Shovel'er.

Koz is not that type of player. He will be better as a setup man on the 2nd line, with Semin on the trigger and Flash on the boards.

Posted by: livinit | February 4, 2008 12:14 PM | Report abuse

I tend to agree with Finn. The top line had been producing well together, and you don't need someone who has been out of hockey for 10 months playing on the top line. Ease him in. I guess we will se how it works out.

And I agree that Brash needs to give Semin some "wall-to-wall" counseling on taking stupid penatlies. Bounce him off a wall, if he doesn't get the message, bounce him off another, etc, etc. The boy needs to grow up!

Posted by: Lee | February 4, 2008 12:23 PM | Report abuse

With the Caps leading the league in percentage of its points scored by a single player, last game was simply statistically what happens when Alex gets no goals and no assists.

I don't like Kozlov and Semin paired. Too much creativity not enough grit.

I just got Center Ice recently so I don't know much about Fleischmann. If he collects garbage in front of the net and doesn't mind joining Alex in the Broken Nose club, then I think this line can work. Otherwise put me in the doubter's corner.

Who said that Fehr is going to crash the net? Last I heard people said that he was a "pure goalscorer". There is only one person who can crash the net -- Clark. And he is injured. I remember Fehr playing last season, he never crashed the net. He looked a little selfish to me, actually. So don't kid yourself. Fehr will not score "dirty goals". He's not that kind of a player. Even with his size. Kozlov is a big guy too. So?

Posted by: Finn | February 4, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Put me with those who think that breaking the first line is a mistake. But I trust BB will revert the lines during the game if he sees that they are not working. It will be nice if the new combination clicks, the second line needs a center.
To the Semin detractors, give it a rest, try to understand the circumstances in which he is playing. Learn the intricacies of hockey.
Here is hoping that Johnson has a good game.

I have seen in some trade talk (rumors) that Manny Malhotra could be had from the CBJ.
He has had some excellent coaching, albeit not very long, from Hitchcock and brings excellent size & uses it with regularity. He has alot of speed can pass the puck with the best and is a team player not to mention defensively sound.
What do you think of someone like him?
Just adding to the conversation here.
Best of luck to the Caps, they deserve it.

I think we should make Semin play without a stick for a while in practice and get him to work on body position while defending. It may drastically reduce the stick infractions we see from him.

RE: Pairing Semin w/ Ovechkin

We've done this many times before. Ovie and Semin play very similar positions. Too much skill and not enough passing (though Ovie has been better in the passing dept recently). They belong on lines 1 & 2. Now get a second line center to play with Semin and it will make even more sense.

I assume this is the reason we're trying Kozlov on the second line. It's not a move I agree with, because we've finally seen Kozlov gel to his potential on first line. But the move makes a glimmer of sense if Kozlov can ignite Semin.

Time will tell, but for the moment I'm fine with moving Kozlov to the 2nd line and putting Fehr on the 1st. While the overwhelming bulk of the scoring has been coming from the first line recently, the second line has fallen into a funk and desperately needs talent to spark it. Kozlov has shown a decent physical and playmaking presence lately and I think it should go well with Semin's abilities. Fehr, meanwhile, has enough talent to be a solid top-two right winger and deserves a chance to shine.

And besides, it's not like lines are written in stone. If it's not working BB can just switch them around from shift to shift.

Who said that Fehr is going to crash the net?

I've seen Fehr play quite a lot, and yes, he crashes the net. He's a big boy and he's not afraid to use his size. He scores pretty goals sometimes, but he picks up alot of garbage ones too. Trust BB's judgement on this one.

mj,

I believe it was a two goal game, not a hat trick, but it was surprising nonetheless. After that game, though, he sort of dwindled back into level of play ("okay, but not that great") if I recall correctly.

Fehr was pretty decent when he played with the Caps last season, and the general consensus is that he's going to be a good NHL-er. If he gets back into his usual form quickly enough, he won't be going back to Hershey. The only thing that was going to keep him out of Washington was the injury, which he says is now 100% healed. It was just a matter of time.

Ovechkin Backstron Fehr was supposed to be the 1st line for the future. Looks like the future is here now.

But more importantly, this gives Semin a offensive centerman to play with, and one that he can understand.

All in all, this is just what we needed.

With Ovy and Backstrom, all I can say is LOOK OUT !

Posted by: billy barule | February 4, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

In my experience having seen Eric actually play, Fehr's best attributes are his shot, a good set of wheels, and his ability to finish/set up around the net. He aint a finesse guy - but he goes for the net. On that there can be no argument. Parking him with Backstrom and Ovie is a great move, IMO.

Woow have the fans here gotten spoiled with 2 months of good hockey? im sure I will make some one mad but I have seen posted that the Coach that has been in hockey for many years is making wrong line assigments and players have to prove themselves to get on the first line (prove to fans or orginization) I think there is nothing worse then when someone beats up on the team when they lose a game but then baskes in the glory when they win a game. Maybe i am wrong.

Tarik, thx for the additional info on Fehr's injury. Herniated discs tend to compress nervers so it sounds like once the osteopath got a hold of him and got everything re-aligned that it just took time for the nerves affected to heal. @Super,

I can't speak for Jill, but I'm a fan of Alex S. I just find his penalties very frustrating. He's killing momentum as of late imho.

Pair him up with a good center and a RW that can score and he'll be downright dangerous (again).

Posted by: Steve R | February 4, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

That's okay, I can speak for myself. :) I wouldn't say I'm at the point where I am a fan of Semin's...yet. Right now IMO he is very one-dimensional --doesn't do much other than goal-scoring and even that is streaky.

I would like to see him develop into a much more complete player, especially at his salary. I hope that the team and coaching staff have a strategy for this. For now I would be satisifed if he would (1) chase the puck instead of always waiting for it to come to him; (2) skate hard once in a while; (3) be far more discplined about taking penalties, especially in the offensive zone; (4) get better at maintaining puck possession; (5) appear to gel with the rest of his teammates on the ice.

THEN maybe I will call myself a Semin fan.

The condition of the ice has been a common complaint for a long time. It is time to get it addressed, in in fact, this is contributing to difficulties in scoring.

Posted by: Lee | February 4, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

I think the original point of the ice comment was to say that the condition of the ice more adversely affects us, compared to certain opponents because of our style of play. Since we've adapted a more offensive, up-tempo style; the slow, choppy ice can help an opposing team who wants to grind it out with us.

The problem I, and many fans I'd bet, had with Saturday's loss to Atlanta is simple;
That game may as well have been a playoff game. They were playing a division foe who just happened to be one point ahead of them in the standings, who also happened to have played into a shootout less than 24 hours before, and who also happened to have been missing their best player.
Instead of coming out hard and taking it to a tired, undermanned opponent the Caps allowed the Thrash to dictate the pace of the game, allowed them to rope-a-dope for two-plus periods until a hideous defensive breakdown gave them a scoring chance a Mites team could have converted.
36 shots on goal looks impressive in the boxscore but when 34 of them come from the perimeter without even the shadow of a Capital skater in front of the net that stat loses its luster. They never made Lehtonen move! All those shots did, however, stain the crest on the front of his jersey.

I'm as big a Caps fan as anyone but a team that is serious about going to the playoffs just doesn't let a game like Saturday's happen - in their own building no less.
If another team comes in and out-plays a Caps team that played their hardest that's one thing... What happened Saturday is another thing entirely.

That is a great post. I don't agree agree with everything but you have made your point very well. Much better than just saying he is pretending not to speak English without any collaboration to that charge.
In my opinion, he is just a victim of the playing circumstances. When Nylander and Clark got injured, the second line got decimated and the only one left in it is Semin. He needs better quality players to support that line, at the very least, they need to minimize the constant changes so that they can jell together. I give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he is a terrific player with a bad cast of character playing at his side.

Posted by: Opita | February 4, 2008 6:03 PM | Report abuse

I've seen Fehr play 3 times in the past threee weeks. He was god-awful against Wilkes-Barre, but then so was the entire team. The last two games he looked much better. His timing still seems to be off a bit, when compared to how he was playing last year before he got hurt, but he has looked much better these last two games. He is NOT the prototype Power Forward, at least yet. He is big and will go in front of the net, but he is more of a goal scorer than a crasher/grinder. IMHO he should have been left in Hershey for another couple of weeks. I think GMGM and BB are getting a bit desparate for some secondary scoring, but I'm not sure Fehr is the answer. He has all of the tools, but needs time to get in game shape and get his timing down. I really hope he proves me wrong, but I just don't think his game is ready for the NHL right now.

I may be late and this may have been posted as I haven't caught up, but the best way to get more production out of the 2nd line is to get Flash off of it. I've seen Fehr play a few times and have been impressed. He's the thing that's really missing from the team. Yes, he's more of a sniper than a crasher. He has great hands and a great shot, but he's also not afraid of going to the net, and screening the goalies. This is what we need, especially on the power play.

At a boy Chief,
Winning is a great deodorant! Funny how other GM's are making moves to improve their teams yet gmgm says it's just too hard and no one wants to make deals. Maybe it's that he can't deal with the pressure of being a buyer/builder this year. It's easy when you're having the fire sales, giving away the talent for future picks and "BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE". I hope some one lets Ted in on the fact that gmgm's line translates into "I'm preserving my PAY CHECK." Like I thought he would do, here comes Fehr to fill the need for wing. gmgm two questions for you. What are you going to do about the need at D? Also, Is Fehr's back strong enough to say your a$$? I guess we'll wait and see. Getzlaf's is fine.

someone else who knows:

Can you please list some of these amazing moves other GM's are making to "improve their teams"? You aren't allowed to list the signing of Niedermayer or Selanne, as they were either retiring or signing with Anaheim. Also, you can't list any players recalled from the AHL...so, I'm looking for trades. Go right ahead...show me all the amazing moves that other GM's have made in the last week. Heck, go for the last month.

And winning is the great deodorant? Yea, it is! The goal is to WIN...why bring up facts like the Caps have the lowest payroll in the East, not to mention they are missing 7-8 million dollars from that already low-budget roster. A GM's job is to create a team that can win games (in this case on an extremely limited budget)...last I checked the Caps are within 3 points of 3rd place in the conference with 2 games in hand.

Or if you want, you can look to the fact that the Caps are the only team not to lose back to back games in regulation since Thanksgiving...so to me...winning is THE GOAL.

Ok, so Fehr was taken in between Parise and Getzlaf. I know if Parise were available GMGM would have taken him. But NJ traded up in the draft to get him. Drafting is very hit and miss and the Caps haven't faired well drafting in their entire history. Remember, the Caps drafted Darren Veitch before the Oilers drafted Paul Coffey. It's pointless to dwell on what could have been. I still think Fehr can develop into a good player. If he plays to his potential, he will could be a future all-star. Jeff,
San Jose seeing they need extra muscle to get through possible playoff games w/ Anaheim, picked up gritty Jody Shelley. Columbus in a funk but still in the hunt picks up a veteran D in Tarnstrom. And believe me more moves will be happening soon. And Jeff, what happened on Thanksgiving? That's right the Caps (cough, Ted) finally replaced the coach and look at what happened. BB and BB alone shook things up, held all players accountable, and turned the team record around. He is why the team is winning, not gmgm. Interesting how you bring up the injury situation, because BB seems to WIN with what or who he has. I haven't heard him harp on the injuries like Hanlon/gmgm did earlier in the year. He's just in a different mindset then what has been in charge in the past and it is refreshing. BB makes it fun to be a Caps fan again. Oppps, I said it!
I guess it comes down to this Jeff, many GM's have been hired and fired during gmgm's tenure. John Ferguson's contract was set to expire on June 30, of 2008 and it will not be extended and he has been removed. Ferguson has been there half as long as gmgm w/ just as many playoff appearances, one. Since I can't mention Selanne and Niedermayer you can't give gmgm credit for the cup run. That was Poile's team which gmgm wrecked when trading Cote, Zednik and Bullis. By the way Tarik, when does gmgm's contract expire?

OK, so, you made this to easy for me. "BB alone shook things up, held all players accountable, and turned the team record around." Um, he HELD GMGM'S PLAYERS ACCOUNTABLE. He is a good coach, coaching the players that GMGM put together. GMGM's job is to create a team and BB's job (and one that Hanlon failed at) is to coach it...and THAT is the team that is now winning!

GMGM hired BB down in Hershey...and when his previous coach couldn't get the job done he brought in BB to get the job done in DC. He brought in a new coach to handle HIS players, and now they are winning.

Unless BB actually swapped players abilities with players who GMGM didn't acquire, I'm not sure how you can argue that GMGM's team isn't winning.

I am beginning to lose hope... I am still pissed at the ATL game - what a waste of a game... I would rather lose to Columbus than ATL and now we HAVE to beat Columbus with Mr. Shutout in net.

Where has my faith gone?

Score 6 and you will win... I'd like to see it... the only one who can score is Ovechkin... he has shown that he has only been able to get 4.

I'm not getting my hopes up for this season. This is a Washington Sports team - they seem to dissappoint you more than they please you.

ATL was a must win night but the Caps can turn it around. They weren't suppose to even compete with a healthy Ottawa squad, yet we beat them, with Heatley in their lineup. Columbus will be hard to beat tonight. Their goalie is amazing but I have hope that if we can get scoring chances from our first two lines, then we can win.
