Final: Caps 4, Flyers 2

Tarik's on deadline, so we'll just post the final score and echo his comments from the second intermission: When the Flyers went up 2-0 early, who thought there would be a Game 7?

And what do two third-period goals tell us about Ovechkin?

Comment it up ...

Late add: I almost forgot -- we'd still love to see your fan photos, especially funny ones from Philly. Upload and share here.

Posted by: Steven | April 21, 2008 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Repost from prior thread because the internet machine is going completely wack on me (hence the extremely belated "First??" comment).

Wow, I have watched probably 80+ games this season, and this one _sounded_ like one of the best on the season.

Of course my cable company in Manhattan completely F'd me... they bungled the center ice feed so I had to listen to the game... but what an amazing come from behind victory. This team deserves to win tomorrow, but honestly, whatever happens I feel genuinely grateful for the season. So much excitement, so much heart, so much fun. There is no better team to watch.

Let's bring it to them tomorrow night an settle this thing for good. GO CAPS!!

(By the way, you had to just know Ovie was gonna break out... Philly may win tomorrow, but they've got to be kicking the sh*t out of themselves for not sewing this up earlier... you know, back when we didn't have the fire lit under us quite as much and when they thought they had "shut down" Ovie... which of course is utterly ridiculous given he was a force on the ice in every game in my opinion... just because he's not lighting the lamp... stupid commentary)

Posted by: TripDonkeys | April 21, 2008 10:26 PM | Report abuse

So can we get all the talking heads to stop refering to Ovie as "the front runner for the Hart" and just call him the....

2007/2008 MVP???????

Posted by: Nick | April 21, 2008 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Watching this game here in Canada on TSN Tarik and they were bashing Ovechkin and Coach Boudreau for the ineffective PP. Well by the 12 minute mark of the third period they were saying the Caps younger legs are gonna give them a big edge in game 7 on the short turnaround. This team has been written off by others so many times - the Backstrom goal woke the world up to what we (Caps fans)already knew. Most explosive team in NHL when they click.

Posted by: Patrick | April 21, 2008 10:27 PM | Report abuse

So is it just me, or do we expect slightly less Flyers trolls tomorrow? ;)

Posted by: King Huet | April 21, 2008 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know if there are tickets available? Not that I can go, just want to make sure it's all caps fans.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 21, 2008 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Yeah.... the PP was a bit disjointed tonight. Slow passing, trying to get the highlight real goal. Green needs to unload a bit more.

Posted by: nadir | April 21, 2008 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Baby!

"70% of teams who score first in game 6, win. The Caps are in the 30%," I said at the beginning of the game. I knew we would tie it when Backstrom scored the first goal. They were poised, collected, perfect. I just knew that they were going to score again, and Philly wouldn't. Then, when Richards leveled Ovechkin I turned to my friend and told him that Richards had made a huge mistake. You could hear the floodgates open after his first goal. When Fedorov kept the puck in the zone after trying to stickhandle it in I started cheering, i said "that guy made a mistake and then quickly corrected it," and then BOOM, we're going to 7!

5 believe. I truly, truly believe.

repost- thats the second time today I was the last to post in a thread. wtf?

I've believed in this team since Bruce took over. I am from central PA and saw him coach a Bears team to the Calder Cup in his first season at the helm, they won a game 7 against the Portland Pirates when they were outmatched.... this team is poised, calm, collected and ready to explode. Tomorrow should be incredible.

I think during the pregame Ted Leonsis should "Rock the Hawk" to fire the crowd up... maybe McPhee too

Posted by: James | April 21, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

here are some comments from canadians on globesports.com they love our team, too!

"Awesome game, and far more entertaining than the Habs' blowout over Boston. 2 sweet goals by Ovechkin... loved that one-timer... pass floated across, and even though he was off-screen, you just KNEW Ovechkin was going to appear to blast it home. Loved it. Here's hoping that the Caps' speed, skill, and enthusiasm can finish off the dirtiest team left in the playoffs."

"If Ovechkin and enthusiasm can win a Stanley Cup, the Caps stand a good chance.

Whenever I see the Caps play, I see a team having fun playing a sport they love - getting paid big time. I think Ovechkin's enthusiasm is contagious for the Caps and they are truly a wild card in this second season.

Game 7 - Go Caps Go."

Unbelievable. What about Poti and Green? Will they call Sami up from the Bears just for precaution. Poti came back to play, but he did not look good on the bench. What was wrong with Green. If you don't think you can give 100% don't play. I give Shultz credit for not playing when he was hurt. Maybe dress six defense, and if Poti or Green can't go all game, put Federov back on D.

In the third period when the Caps had iced the puck,Steckel was on the bench with the camera on him.He purposely took out his mouth piece and threw it on the ice and told the linesman to get it.He bought probably about 20 seconds for the guys on the ice. What a heady play.Boudreau saw the whole thing and patted him on the shoulder. That is smart hockey.

I would have to say that the game tying goal by Semin was the turnaround in the game. Philly looked so confused after that point.
Man I wish I had a connection for the game tomorrow. The Phone booth is gonna be jumpin'.
I would love to see the Caps go as deep in the playoffs as possible. If nothing more, I know this is the time when ownership makes it money. Although I am sure it doesn't matter to him, No owner deserves to see the profits more than our own UNCLE TED!!!!!!!!!!!

That was straight up sick.

Posted by: Jerry | April 21, 2008 10:43 PM | Report abuse

King Huet- Nice!

@Tripdonkey- Richards layed ovechkin on his ass with a sweet hit. Totally rocked him. He was playing very well before the hit. Then he got 2 goals. Kozlov was huge. HIs passes were great tonight. Fedorov works his ass off if he gives up the puck or makes a mistake. He's relentless. He stayed out on the Pk on a 5 on 3 and then, after getting the puck into the Flyers zone, he stayed on the ice and let the others change; then he didn;t even try to get off. Huet made key saves. Brashear played great. Fehr great. The whole tea, played like they did down the stretch: they gave up some odd man rushes because their pressure was so consistent (that directly led to Semins goal- they were in the O zone for a l o n g time). Erskine was on his game.

They kept it simple. And it worked to perfection.

@ geauxcaps,
Poti got caught behind the head by Brooksie's stick when they both went in to check the same Flyer. Poti's helmet fell off, then he got hit. He was helped off, and sat on the bench for a total of...four shifts, maybe. He was back on the ice not long after, playing hard.
Not sure about Green.
@ Redlineblue, she will if she's worth marrying! ;)

Let's go Caps!! Really wishing there was someone who could work for me tomorrow night so I can watch the game...

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 21, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

Interesting oo7. I am actually _most_ worried about the odd-man rushes the Flyers have been generating. I love our attacking style, and I love that the D is aggressive and pinches a lot. But the Flyers seem to be really stretching the ice with long passes, and it doesn't look like we've quite adapted enough. Were there a lot of long outlets that created odd man rushes and/or chances?

When I watch the Devils play over the last few years, sometimes it feels like they get dominated during the play, but they counterattack so well. And if you do that long enough and consistently enough (and win Stanley Cups)... they it starts to seem like you know how to win better than the other team.

I'm probably just being pessimistic because I'm nervous about tomorrow's game. Boudreau will have figured all of that out, right?

Posted by: TripDonkeys | April 21, 2008 11:11 PM | Report abuse

the700club.com is hilarious. Blaming the refs -- even with the 5-3.

I have watched the replay of Ovie's 4th goal about 20 different times from 3 different angles and I still can't pick up the puck (of course, neither could Biron). It looks like Ovie's miming a slap shot -- I can't even see it once it's in the net. Six games worth of frustration put into that slapper.

Posted by: Boo! | April 21, 2008 11:20 PM | Report abuse

TripDunkey- Not the kind of odd man rushes that overpowered. The D did a great job of not giving up too much. The First 5 minutes of the game gave up a few. Bu the ten minute mark it settled down. But the Flyers were still able to get the puck from the boards to the red line effectively. Its not that they didn't play well (they did; they kept themselves in it with very good stickwork) its that they had to play well in their own zone for long stretches and we've all seen what the Caps can do to you when you're pinned and tired.

Yet they did it all with what seemed an almost eerie calm. Weird. Only one retaliatory penalty and that was Semin, who was laughing in the box. Awesome game for everyone else outside of Washinton and Philly to see.

@jmu_capsgirl, I think she rates center preferred and I can get a p'etty nice rock for less. still, something to think about--if I could think about anything besides tomorrow's game.

Someone owes Steve Eminger $1.8M, 14 minutes a night, and a chocolate covered swedish gymnast with a playful, inexhaustible curiosity about..um, hockey (family paper and all). The Caps should keep Steve Eminger. Discuss.

@jmu, you're a True Caps Fan. Alas for me, that means you'd never settle!
What in the world could have gotten Eminger so doghoused? He's averaging 1.14 fewer boneheads per game than Schultz (look it up), and he's smarter with the puck than Erskine.
I keep forgetting-ish that the Caps have such wealth in the pipeline (Alzner, Bourque, etc) and the sideline (Clark, Nylander) that even keeping Fedorov around isn't the no-brainer I want it to be. But sitting Eminger for a year look pretty goofy after this past week.
Ovechkin "held" to a goal and three assists in a 5-2 win.

@kazikstan

Yes! I noticed that too! Back to the instincts :)

redlineblue,
No clue about Emi. Mike Vogel said he knew something, but wouldn't talk about it unless Emi didn't play for the Caps. I say we keep him.

"Look Mom! I was on my way home from the rink and I found this defenseman on the side of the road. Can we keep him? Please? Oh please, please, please?? Pretty pretty please with a cherry on top??"

Let's go Caps!!

And it was Eminger's pass that sprang Laich for the Semin to Backstrom goal! That was an amazing play, I burst out laughing because it looked like "The Flying 'V!'"

I love it! Check out On the Fly. Listen to Pierre Mcquire after Backstrom's goal. I love it!

So I had a flight during the game, and had my room mate DVR the game for me, and got home to find out that he DVR'd Vs instead of CSN and consequently recorded the Bruins Habs game. ARGH!

Saw the highlights on Caps TV on the caps website and it looks like I missed a sweet game. Can't wait for tomorrow's game. I have my usual seat for the playoffs, plus 4 more I got for my brothers and Uncle. Its gonna be sick.

@JMU

Are there many CAPS fans at JMU? How many times do you make the trip to Verizon Center in a season? I'll be attending JMU in the fall! I hope to still make it to quite a few games.

who else other than eminger will be a free agent this summer. Is he the only one that we need to keep?

Posted by: steve | April 22, 2008 12:55 AM | Report abuse

Travis,
I've seen a couple of guys around campus with jerseys/hoodies/hats/etc on. Not many, maybe enough to start a pick-up game. I've made it up twice in the past season (Dec & Feb), but with the Caps getting attention, it got harder to reliably get Student Rush tickets. I also work full-time, so that interferes with driving to DC for the whole day. I'll make it to as many games as I can next season, but unfortunately my plan to set my schedule so I could make it to games didn't work out too well. Congrats on your acceptance, welcome to the cult! If you ever need somewhere to watch the games, let me know! I figure by then, I'll know every place in town to watch games and the Caps will be big enough that they'll actually put games on at B-Dubbs. Hams already will.

Let's go Caps!!!

**** some could say the flyers couldn't handle the standing 8 count!!!!

Game 7!!!! ah-ah-ahhhhh!!!!!!! (more lightning and thunder effects)

To watch tonight's game with other Caps fans in Manhattan, how do we find each other? Tripdonkeys?

Suggestion: Ship of Fools (2nd Ave. b/t 82nd & 83rd). If there's already an established venue, please post ...

I love the Philly fans. 20k cheering, screaming maniacs pregame up thru the 2 goals; quite through Backstrom, Semin and Ovechkin's first; Booing loudly after OV's 2nd through the end of the game!
