First 10 Minutes Will Be Key

The morning skate just ended and there are no lineup changes to report for Game 6.

The consensus in the visiting dressing room was that the first 10 minutes will determine the outcome tonight, and perhaps the direction of the series.

We know the Flyers are going to try to run the Caps through the boards and right out of Wachovia Center, which will be filled with loud, rowdy, orange-clad fans. The question is how will the Caps respond?

"Yeah, they're going to try to run us through the building in the first few minutes," tough defenseman John Erskine said. "We have to fight back and play a physical game, too."

Added rugged right wing Matt Bradley: "They are going to want to set the tone and get the crowd behind them. We know how they are going to come out, and they're going to come out strong. We have to meet their push. The first period, I think, is going to decide who comes out on top."

The Caps seemed pretty loose this morning. Lots of laughing, horseplay and even a few goal celebrations. Coach Bruce Boudreau hopes that bodes well for his young and inexperienced team, which is facing elimination for the second time in three days.

"You hope that after the first shift and everybody touches the puck and gets a hit that wears off," Boudreau said. "Before the game, there's a lot of walking around an nervousness for both parties. But once the game starts and everyone gets into the battle."

Asked about specific keys to the game, Boudreau, a guy who has never heard a question he didn't want to answer, said: "I don't know. We'll see."

Ah yes, it's definitely playoff time.

Update:I'm told Riley Cote will be back in the lineup for the Flyers, and R.J. Umberger will fill the role vacated by MIke Knuble (torn hamstring).

I am actually glad to hear the mood was light at the morning skate. I think the boys are well aware of the what needs to be done seem to understand they have nothing too lose. I hope the jovial vibe will keep the nerves at a manageable level leading up game time; expend the energy when and where it matters.

@Roger #94

No soccer today and the folks at Summers have always been awesome the past few weeks about setting up the TVs with sound in the corner area for all of us to watch hockey. I'm sure they'd be happy to do so tonight, someone would just need to get there around 6:30 and let them know how many people will be there.

Unfortunately I can't bring myself to watch in public tonight, I'm afraid of what I'll break if the outcome doesn't go our way. LOL

Cote gets a sweater today on the 4th line, Umberger moves to the Carter/Upshall line and Thoreson goes back to the Richards/Lupul line.

About the NBC comment, it seemed more like they were previewing the possibility at some point down the line, not necessarily next series. After all, they are the two teams that have already sealed up their first round series (can't really speculate about the teams still playing) and if the Bruins win tonight then that series is not happening in the next round.

"CAPS seem scared of The Philly Faithful"

I don't think so. And what's up w/this whole "vengence now"? Who's Philly trying to get vengence on? They are the ones that had a franchise worst season a yr ago. It should be "redemption now". Except the Caps are going to finish them off. In that case, their slogan can be "golf now".

@Rich C, Redline, Tokyo:

Just read some of the Ace Bailey comments. Yes, Ace was a scout for the Kings at the time of 9/11. But here's more of the story...Boudreau was working for the Kings also, coaching their farm team in Manchester NH. He and Ace were supposed to fly to LA together for training camp, but for some reason BB decided to go a day later and changed his ticket, or else he also would have been on the plane that went down. Heard that story shortly after BB came to Hershey to coach; I believe it was BB's wife who told it.

Vengeance now is basically them vs the whole NHL... they are getting their Vengeance because everyone smoked them last year... EVERYONE... so, this is their way of getting their fans into the team.

That is why my sign said: "I've Got Your Vengeance Right Here" because, I don't buy it and the Caps are calling their bluff.

@Willy

What do we have to be scared of?...We won 10 in a row to just get in. This is all gravy for us..

Follow-up to 1:23 post:

Checked the Harrisburg Patriot archives and came up with a partial listing confirming Boudreau 9/11 story:

Schedule change saved Bears coach

Date: September 10, 2006
Page: A01

Bruce Boudreau had a ticket for United Flight 175, which slammed into the south tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Had his employer, the National Hockey League's Los Angeles Kings, not changed his travel plans to Sept. 10, Boudreau would have been sitting next to his friend, Garnet "Ace" Bailey, who was killed along with fellow Kings scout Mark Bavis.

"It's surreal on how close things came," said...

I say its a shame because as a Flyers fan, I can't possibly cheer for the Caps right now and after the Caps lose I am sure that the local interest in hockey will pass.

Carolina is from the same weak ass division as the Caps that could only get one team in the playoffs compared to 4 from our division. Your win streak coming into the playoffs was against those same teams from the weakest division in the NHL. Now that you guys have won essentially 3 out of 15 periods you think that you can take the series. We have shut down the "greatest player in the NHL". The Caps are a bunch of hype.

I could cheer for the Rangers and Steve "Shake yer Bootie" Avery, but he has embarrased the league (only a rangers fan could be proud of that moment). I could be a Philly fan, but watching a bunch of goons getting "serviced" by little Danny just isn't fun to me. Oh, I know, the pens! No, wait, Sydney. nuff said.

No, I'll stick to the team that is currently the most exciting, has the most exciting core of young players, a fun owner, and the worst ice in the league. And I feel no need to go to another teams blog and validate my team by throwing lame insults. I'll stick to you my young team, and my fellow Caps Insider bloggers come hell or high water. The best part about going to a game at MSG with "real" fans is that half the people don't show up until the 2nd period and the other half leave halfway through the 3rd. True fans to the bitter end.

I didnt want to get into it with anyone but I cant resist. What does it say about the Flyers, having won 3 out of the 15 periods as you say, and still be in a fight to go through to the next round? And i guess "shutting down" the best player in the NHL in your eyes consists of him having 5 points in the series, knocking the snot out of Richards and "helping" Dowd with his line changes. You're a joke and so are the Flyers.

1. Gotta stay out of the penalty box. NO STUPID PENALTIES.

2. We must get people in front of Biron. He still hasnt seen Semin's shot....

3. We must put rubber on Biron during the PP. Rebounds, deflections, and second chances will be key.

4. Gotta roll 4 lines. With Knuble out, Flyers will mix things up and may shorten their bench. Cote will get 6 minutes at most.

5. Now is the time for Huet to steal one.

I feel it.

What's your point FlyersfaninMD? When the Cap's fans starting getting bad raps for doing things like that, then we can talk. You never know what some beer can do to people. But, as of right now, Philly fans are a bunch of goons... like I said, until that changes, we can talk, but for now... you are on your own. Who is going to believe you anyways? Hey, did you hear about Briere kissing Richards... saw it in the men's room after the game...

The people that did that to your family are an embarrassment.

However, the team you support has been, since the dawn of creation, a team that relishes being the bully, the villian, and the goon all in one. You won 1 Cup by basically beating down the opposition. You fans "travel" more like soccer hooligans than fans. I've seen more moronic behavior from Flyer fans than any other visiting team, by far (Pens a close second).

The other one was more believable because he brought it up within his first post or two, but you have been posting here for a long time now and this is the first we've heard of this happening to you. Why wouldn't this be one of the beefs highest on your list? Why wouldn't you come immediately after it happened and yell about it? Why wait until now, when we're at game 6 and threatening your team? It makes no sense!

Last time you all went to Summers we lost, don't you guys learn?

Posted by: cupcrzy | April 21, 2008 2:46 PM | Report abuse

Someone above asked about the "Vengence" thing that the Flyers have going. It's an intelligence test for them. And they all failed.

See, the Inquirer (not the grocery tabloid, though it's as good as that rag is) commentators said that the Caps fans erupted in cheers when Green attempted an amputation of a testicle. Of course, he wasn't trying to do that. A few seconds after he went down, Green shot again and scored. THAT's what the cheering was for.

But Flyer's fans are too ignorant to realize that. So they built a whole promotion around their guy's injury. Good family-friendly promotion. Let's get vengence...

By the way, what's with the Happy Meal hats they gave out at the last game? You all looked like idiots.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 21, 2008 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Moose, you are a genius for restating what I just said. The Flyers have turned a great player into an average player. We have him skating around looking for payback hits instead of focusing on putting the puck in the back of the net. We are still up by one game and time is running out for the Caps. Do you really think that they are capable of winning two in a row? Reality is about to come up and smack the Caps in the face.

OV has hit players all year. He'll do the same next year. He doesnt run and hide, or lift his stick into somebody else's crotch and skate away. That's what you dont get. He's a complete player. You're used to snipers who do only one thing. He doesnt have to score to play well. Other players do.

You've put so much attention on him, that other players are stepping up. You've turned him into an "average" player by having half your team on him. Keep doing it.....

Do you actually watch these games? I thought "Mr. I like all the hockey talk this series has generated" would be paying attention. You're not, you're probably concocting more fictional tales about your trips to the arena; or wondering why Briere is such a punk.

Posted by: Pivonka | April 21, 2008 3:05 PM | Report abuse

THe cool thing is, if the caps somehow don't win tonight, tomorrow, or any of the next series, although disappointed, we FANS know that this team is built for the long run. Every team has needs after each season, but we will be going into next season in a position of strength. The Flyers, the Rangers, and the Pens all have player concerns next season. It's a great feeling.

Oh, and since we weren't even supposed to make the playoffs, every game is a bonus for us!

Now go make the season longer boys!

I am sorry but Philly fans are absolutely watching something different than I am....True, Mr. Briere has had a heck of a series and has scored some big goals but as far as him not being an absolute pu$$y then I will give you two occurences.

I forgot what games they were, pardon my drunkeness, but when Briere ran into Huet and rubbed his head into the ice while he was on top...

The one that really got my attention was when there was a scrum in the corner and players started to grab "dance partners", Superman Briere charged after the biggest and baddest kid on the ice. You know it, 18 year old, 6'1 inch, 183 lbs soaking wet, Nicklas Backstrom!!!!!!!!!!! Briere is a very SMART PLAYER, he knows where to be and where not to be, and who to pick a fight with and who not to....Ovechkin goes with anyone anytime and normally wins the physical battles.......

If the Flyers can lose 10 in a row, the Caps can easily win 2 in a row.
The Flyers, who lost ten in a row this season, have bad karma. Knuble goes out with a torn hammie - the same injury that brought down Richards, after they had lost ten in row in February.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 21, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

I guess a couple twenty year olds saying "flyers blow" should make us DC fans embarrassed. I mean.. it's so much less classier then when all the fans chant "F*@K Ovechkin", or the ever popular "Bull $h!t". But hey.. I guess as long as the people swearing are wearing Orange, and claiming vengeance, then it must be good.

Q: Which city has a prison and magistrate in their football stadium again?

What a city full of hypocrites. They revere the Broad Street Bullies, and then cry like little babies when someone on their team gets hit, "where's the foul ref?". They talk about unsportsmanlike fans, and yet cheer alongside the most notorious foul mouthed and ill-behaved spectators in the sport. They boo Brier, and then claim he's the man.

Thus, @FlyersFan, I'll offer a bit of advice. If you don't want your daughter to be called a hawg smoking D loving sausage bag, then don't bring her to a visiting hockey game as a Flyers fan. For when you place yourself in an abusive environment, you need to expect abuse. If she were a Stars fan, I would guarantee that the comments would have never been made.... well.. unless she really does just like to suck......

I agree that its ashame what your daughter experienced at her first game. Should never have happened.

In 1988, my first wife and I were at the Caps Center for Caps Flyers (we went on to win 6-0!), along with our 4month old. My ex has to breastfeed our daughter, puts a blanket over her and our daughter, and tries to complete said task out in the hallway. A drunk Flyers fan comes up to her and decides to get "a little too close for my comfort" while she's trying to feed the little one. Then he and his buddies decide its MY fault for bringing my wife and daughter to the game.

Bottom line, its the 10% asswholes who ruin it for the masses. Every one of us probably has a story... hell, I got a few yankee/oriole stories from my childhood... upper deck at memorial stadium on liquor and handgun night...... great edumication there!!!!!

NOTE TO OFFICE WORKERS ANXIOUSLY AWAITING TONIGHTS GAME:

1. Do not immediately think someone wearing orange is a Philly fan and loudly boo them. Check references.

2. Making subordinates from Philly or that cheer for Philly stay late is a no brainer, firing them dispite the outcome should be added to the agenda.

3. When someone in your office asks you if you think the Caps will win, do not respond with "Does a bear sh!t in the woods" and start Caps chats.

4. When celebrating a deal, finishing a project, etc, the OV jump into the wall is highly unrecommended but if you decide to undertake said celebration, remember walls do not give and wear a helmet.

5. Hip checks and shoulder checks are ok around the office when done with care. Remember, boarding is not a five minute penalty in real life, its a pink slip.

6. Taunting anyone and everyone with the first name Danny or last name Briere is highly encouraged. Let them know no matter how big they are that 5'8 french canadians are wusses.

7. Do not yell "First" when you get the first word in a conversation with a co-worker.

8. Work on the day of a game is like OV at the morning skate: "Very Optional".

9. When trying to explain why you have a full beard at work, the recommended response is "Christmas is right around the corner and someone said I am playing Santa" rather than dropping what you have in your hands, grabbing a hold of his/her shirt and saying "This is my playoff beard, where the hell is yours?"

10. If you decided to wear your red underneath your work clothes, remember that the logo and the big #8 on your back shows through your white collared shirt :).

Everyone have a good rest of the day. Big win tonight and Ill see ya at Summers.

You may have noticed that I didn't say drive, that's because I'm picturing it with weeds growing up through the hood scoop. Maybe for your birthday, momma's new boyfriend will buy you new cinder blocks to put it up on.

@sigh...

That's even better. I don't know why NHL.COM doesn't show the active roster vs those signed. There's a reason for it, I'm sure. Probably to do with sending people back and forth between AHL and NHL.

Anyway, "Team America" has 3 Americans on active.

The Count - how many games can the Caps win this series in?

Posted by: 828 | April 21, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

I've been listening to everyone compare this years caps to last years Pens. last years pens laid an egg and went out 4-1 to ottowa. The Caps performanc ethis season, for a team completely lacking experience, has been much stronger.

Posted by: Leeguru | April 21, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

I insist we ignore the troll, and be nice with other teams fans coming here with manners. Just because some fan strongly favor his own team it doesn't mean he's insulting us, he just has different views! And, even though it hurts to say it, it is a true fact that up to now in this series Ovie has been demoted from Super-Star to "average" hockey player.

Of course, that could change tonight :D

Anyway, I have semi-bad news, reflector won't stream the game. I have a SopCast link and a mediaplayer (low quality) link:

SopCast: sop://broker.sopcast.com:3912/47986

Mediaplayer:
http://www.mogulus.com/sgtv1

Both of them should begin the stream at 7. I'll update with new infos when I get them.

I think Briere and Richards are heading to this...

http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/15004075C7A7C9D4?dma_id=409

they will have the free time!

Posted by: 828 | April 21, 2008 4:42 PM | Report abuse

Many former soccer players have probably heard of this phrase, but it works here tonight. "First five, last five." Don't give up anything in the immediate start of the period, and especially don't give up anything immediately before the end of a period. Those two timepoints set the momentum for the game, and ultimately, the series in this case.

Posted by: psps23 | April 21, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

@ mauree

what is sopcast? How is the quality.

Posted by: Need to Watch the Game | April 21, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

mauree - funny how Alex was being compared with The Great One and Mario in their first series... Gretzky had 3 points in his first series and lost in 3. Mario had 5 points and won in 4. Alex has 5 points, a game winner, and the Fat Lady has not sung yet.

Posted by: 828 | April 21, 2008 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: The Count | April 21, 2008 4:47 PM | Report abuse

I just picture Tarik sitting back behind the two mirror watching the kids play with an ironic grin. The WaPo, the bastion of journalism, having brought down a sitting President has this entry in sports blog:

"Thus, @FlyersFan, I'll offer a bit of advice. "

How distasteful. I only wish I would have written it. I'm as civilized as they come, but I want to put on the foil, and hit somebody. LETS GO CAPS !!!!

Posted by: Pivonka | April 21, 2008 4:48 PM | Report abuse

It is fair to compare the Penns of last year with the Caps of this year, but only up to a certain point. The young Caps have learned faster and applied it. Their youth should start to be an advantage soon...say in a little more than TWO HOURS!

Posted by: TheCapitalist | April 21, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

just to clear up any concerns.. the Caps are on Comcast tonight. The Wizards will be on TNT. There is not conflict there.

I am somewhat disappointed (for our non local fans) that VS decided to renig on the game 6 in light of the Habs - Bruins game 7. But it is a game 7, so I guess I understand.

Either way.. Go CAPS!!! Give us another day of worthless Philly Trolls on our threads!!!

Posted by: fricknoutstandin | April 21, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

@mauree

Totally agree. I don't mind people holding their views and making arguments. But the garbage thrown out here needed to be cleaned out. We've had some good Flyer's fans here lately, and some great Sens fans. Loved having them on-line with us talking hockey. A little trash, but mostly hockey.

Posted by: Greg S. | April 21, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

It's not the Trolls that are the problem. Philly Jeff has gulped down the Flyer kool-aid, but realizes his team has faults, and doesnt mind discussing them. He also seems to be a hockey fan, not just tunnel-visioned on the Flyers. I enjoy reading his musings as Briere hating Sabre-dude.

For those that that Post nonsense, and disparage the Caps fan base and OV without any hint of respect or knowledge, no matter how entertaining you may think you are, you are idiots. A pox on your arenas. LETS GO CAPS !!

@Greg S

Yeah Brash has been great and I think that hes been a real leader for the team (pre and post Feds) I think even though he hasnt fought yet, and boy would I like him to throw, he's been one of the best Caps this series. Glad he's here for another year.

On another note, Semin has also been great and its nice to see him get some of the spotlight.

Finally, I can point to the exact moment when Backis got what it took in the playoffs. It wasn't pretty but in the Semin-Danielle scrum, Danielle popped Backis in the face and Backis had the look of utter amazement of getting stole in the face. Minutes later he scored his first in the playoffs.

Posted by: MetalCap | April 21, 2008 5:07 PM | Report abuse

The Pens have a franchise goalie. Huet can be that player, but we gotta sign him. Without an ace between the pipes, we will be good, but not great. With Nylander and Clark back (finesse and toughness), we will be that much better. We add a top 3 defenseman and Alzner, we're gonna a damn good.

All that said, who care about near. We gotta win the battles in the corner (Fehr, Brash, Cooke, Bradley) and stay outta the sin bin.

I want everyone to be cool, like Fonzie. Sure, Briere's a sneaky little scumbucket and many Flyer fans are WWF adherents who stood in a meth-induced haze in the Spectrum parking lot as Wachovia Center was built around them. Why should that upset Caps fans? Okay, so they think averaging a point per game puts Ovechkin on a milk carton: why should most Flyers fans have to do hard math problems or understand the game?
Look, if your hockey team was about to be detonated by the salary cap AND an excellent team beat you at your own game on Saturday AND you had to pretend that Bobby "Slasher" Clarke is half the GM that GM is AND you *had to wear orange clothing when it's not Halloween AND your whole freaking town hadnt won a championship in thirtysome years, you'd be nervous and testy and you'd struggle to spell words like dungeon.
Have some pity: they're Philadelphia Flyers "fans".

Boo,

We have not yet begun to smack talk. Just wait till game 7.

Posted by: Steve R | April 21, 2008 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Huet is the bridge between Olie and the 2 young minders coming up through the system.

There is also an interesting crop of kids coming up as D-men. If they play next year, it will be lucky for them, we'll see for the Caps. I don't like inexperienced D-men protecting my goal and goalie.

Semin has been playing outside himself the past 1.5 games. Ever since he was hit 2 times with the stick in the face (no penalties called, BTW), he's changed. About damned time! He's really looking good.

I'm glad to see Fedorov back in the groove, too. Between Backstrom and him feeding eachother, we should have a pretty potent offense this next 2 games.
