Capitals win another close one

By Katie Carrera

Either way the Capitals would have been facing the Tampa Bay Lightning with top billing in the Southeast Division on the line Monday night, but beating the Panthers 3-2 on an overtime goal by Alexander Semin gives Washington the benefit of a one-point edge on first place heading into the contest.

Coach Bruce Boudreau wanted to make sure his team didn't overlook the Panthers. By responding with a win 48 seconds into the extra session after allowing Florida to tie the contest on a five-on-three with less than three minutes to go in regulation, they completed the task. Washington has 82 points, one more than the Lightning, and enters the second half of this back-to-back slate in sole possession of first place in the Southeast. It's the first time the Capitals have stood atop the division since Dec. 29.

"I think the game will be a little more intense," Boudreau said of the contest less than 24 hours in the future.

The win over the Panthers also represented the Capitals' first four-game winning streak since Nov. 26-Dec. 1 and their seventh straight win that has been decided by one goal. Washington is 19-7-10 in one-goal games this season.

"Sometimes it's good to play the close games," goalie Michal Neuvirth said. "It's a little bit intense and I don't mind playing in intense games. We've won four in a row and it's a good start. I think we're getting something together here, and tomorrow's going to be another great challenge for us and we've got to be ready."

Neuvirth is 6-2 in his past eight starts, and before the game Boudreau said he wants to see if the 22-year-old Czech Republic native is up to the task of carrying the weight of an NHL franchise at this time of year. In four games since the 6-0 loss to the Rangers on Feb. 25, Neuvirth has allowed seven goals while facing 119 shots for a .941 save percentage and 1.75 goals against average.

Neuvirth may have been at his best against the Panthers after Florida tied the game up but still had more than a minute and a half of power play time. He made a handful of important saves, including one on Marty Reasoner immediately off a faceoff. You can find the footage of that particular save below.

"That's why we kept telling people we don't need any goaltending at the trading deadline," Boudreau said when Neuvirth's performance late in regulation was mentioned. "We've got good goaltending."

When you look at the NJDs next 5 games, they have 2 against OTT, 2 against ATL, and 1 against the NYI. They should be favored to win all 5 of those.

If they were to win their next 5 games, which is no given as any team can win a game on any given night, then I would consider them a serious threat to make the playoffs.

Some of yall would rather the Caps lose and you be right, then for them to win and you be wrong.

Deny all you want, but if that's the case - which I believe it is for some - you really need to reevaluate how seriously you take this whole thing. Its not healthy.

And we care why???

I'm glad the caps won but if thats all they have to bring tomorrow night then there in for some hurt.Tampa's on a lil losing streak but for playing for the division lead i think theyll bring it a lil more than usual.I hope they were leaving some left in there tanks so they can keep the division lead and run with it.I'll be there in tampa rooting em on along with all there dads!Should be fun!GO CAPS!!!

Devils get the 8 seed and knock the Flyers out in the 1st round. That'd be delightful.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 6, 2011 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Let's examine this 4-game winning streak, shall we?

2 wins over NYI the third WORST team in the league, a win over the Blues the 8th worst team and a win over Florida the 5th worst team.

All one goal games and two went to OT.

@joe

Yup. But it's nice to get some wins strung together. Next week's opponents: CHI, MTL, DET, NJD. That's going to be some tough hockey.

Katie- please be prepared analyze the outcome of those 4 games.

@joek443

I will call those Caps wins just how people on here call the Pens or Flyers wins when they win games like that. Gritty, clutch, and it shows they know how to win in close games. Great D also as they have kept the opponent to 2 goals or less in all 3 games.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 6, 2011 10:18 PM | Report abuse

@joek443. Win is a win. The Isles have been a top 10
Team after the allstar break. Caps tend to play to the level of their opponent all year.

Posted by: bricucci | March 6, 2011 10:25 PM | Report abuse

I'm not too concerned about the winning streak being against not as good teams. It's actually almost better that it is. The Capitals always come out and play solid games against the top teams but when they play guys they really should beat, they slack off or try to be too fancy and frequently end up losing. Right now it looks like they're keeping focused in games they used to let slip away.

I loved how Erskine rubbed Reasoner out along the boards and put him down to the ice on an offsides call. And then when Ovi got into his scrum, Rock Star was quick to jump off the ice to get his back, only to peel away from the pack to seek out Hordichuk (the most-likely culprit to start trouble on the ice) and make sure he stayed in his place.

Now imagine ****55 in Erskine's place. He wouldn't have touched Reasoner to cause him to fall down, but if by accident he did he would've extended a hand to help him up. As for the scrum, he would've used the altercation to go for a line change.

It's those kind's of plays Johnny Rock Star makes that wear the opposition down and picks-up and empowers the Caps. Unfortunately, they don't show up on the score sheet.

Posted by: vermontcaps | March 6, 2011 10:36 PM | Report abuse

I am SO happy the caps are back in first.

It's like the stars are back in alignment.

The Islanders have been on a ROLL since they beat the crap out of the Pens, so 2 wins against them is very good!

The best thing that ever happened to the Caps were: Wideman, and Arnott.

Arnott is now pushing Semin, and Wideman allows us to play 4 top defenseman and sit Green (and only play him on PP and non pressure situations).

AWESOME! GO CAPS!

I'm all about a MTL playoff rematch. No F'ing around this time though. Here's to the standings staying right where they are.

BB needs to have one thing on his mind: get the PP raging again by April 9.

Now look, joek443, I respect your posts as much as anyone here, but let's give the Caps just a little more credit, OK?

At least they won, right, better than the Flyers have been doing.

Right now the Western Channel has "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" with John Wayne. I've seen it at least 10 times but I'll still cry like a baby before it's over.

I'll tell you when the Caps hoist the Cup I'll cry more than Crosby when he thinks the Pens should have a 2-minute PP.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 6, 2011 11:30 PM | Report abuse

I wish we'd work on breaking out of the zone a little faster. We've been spending too much time moving the puck horizontally in the defensive zone and letting the other teams set up their traps. Watching NJ the last couple games this is really evident in the caps game compared to them (god i can't believe im comparing the caps to the devils, but they are on a roll)

Posted by: chatton | March 7, 2011 12:12 AM | Report abuse

when they stop counting wins as wins, then joedummy - we can call it what ever you want.

Until then, it's the results that count not the style points or make believe toothless grit fairy game you remember from your yellowed stained tighty whities year joedummy.

@joek443

This is mean spirited, nit picking to prove your point. There is no doubt that the Caps have been improving. I count Feb 20 as the start of this particular trend. Since that time we have won 6 out of 7 games and that includes Penguins, Buffalo and the teams you mentioned. When we suck it doesn't matter whom we play against. In fact some of our worst losses are against lowly teams so winning against them is not something to take for granted.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra

I agree. If the Caps want to make a deep playoff run they are going to have to have the PP going at about a 20% success rate in the playoffs, especially to come up at big times during games.

You always bob and weave when I pin you down on the FACTS about the Flyers play off history. Respond like you have a pair!

Bobby Clark wins in 74 and 75 !

Club loses to Bowman in 76, Bossy in 80, Oilers in 85 and 87, Federov in 97, and Toews in 2010. I would give my left stone for that record ! It means the franchise wants to Hoist !

I want this organization to draft and sign guys in an identical fashion to the Flyers, Pens ,and Wings. Nothing short of excellence is unacceptable after 36 years. GMGM, model this club after those 3 organizations and Ted's "cups in due time" will happen in my lifetime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 points is 2 points!! Need to keep our heads tonight though, and not take so many dumb penalties.. Sloan/Erskine is a scarry combo.. Wideman also needs to play a little smarter.. He should know better than to leave his feet at the blue line, or take risky shots when he's the only one back.. Hopefully we have enough left in the tank, playing dump and trap for the entire 3rd period, and come out sharp against the Bolts!! Oh, and props once again to Neuvi!! He's earned the #1 as long as he stays healthy, imo!! Lets Go Caps!!

Wideman was okay. Probably a few nerves playing in his old building. The play where he coughed up the puck was not completely his fault as the other D should have been playing a little loose on the other side and it appeared he tripped as he was recovering - THAT is what set up the breakaway. Still, it was his least productive game with us. No worries though. It's Erskine I'm worried about. With Green and Schultz back we will have our top 6.

gonchpup: Shultz should never be a top six. Ill take Lumberjack over him there, especially at playoff time when the marshmellows get roasted.

Vermont you realize Ovi came to Erskine's aid because one of the Panthers poked at the puck and speared Erskine while he was down right? Why don't you give Ovi props for doing what a Captain is supposed to do like stand up for a team mate that is 7 or 8 deep in your d-rotation. Oh yeah, I said it, 7 or 8 deep. When everyone is healthy Rock Star is not in the line-up. Like it or not, that is reality.

Katie's telling stat of the day:

"Washington is 19-7-10 in one-goal games this season"

Has anyone even noticed this around the league...I watched the Panthers TV broadcast last night and they were speechless at how the Caps tried to just defend the lead once they had it. To some its stupid to others it means they are confident.

I yelled at the TV when I saw Wideman out there killing the penalty late. He is always taking chances swiping at the puck rather than making sure to skate to it and get it out. He shouldn't be on PK late in a period like that. Regardless of what you thought about the penalty he took - he puts himself in positions to make mistakes by lowering his odds of completing a simple effective play by always trying to make a great play.

He is 2007-08 Mike Green reborn.

Great point! Huge props to Ovi for making sure liberties weren't taken on Rock Star as he laid on the puck, prone to injury. Ovi's got heart, and he puts it on display almost every night!

Double hat-trick tonight for our captain!!

I also love how the critics want to come on here and talk about how dangerous the Devils are when they are pulling OT wins out against the same teams we are beating. They beat the Isles and Pens in OT. If I have to read another one of Hunter's idiotic exclamation point ridden posts about his take on the Capitals I'm gonna puke. He obviously got into hockey because his kid plays travel hockey for the Montgomery program because he compares world class players to Mites-PeeWees on a regular basis because that's where his experience comes from. I see it ALL the time as a coach. These hockey parents that become experts and avid hockey fans banging on the glass at a youth game. His use of exclamation points kind of tells you what kind of attitude he has. I guarantee he is one of those out of control parents that yells goofy crap at opposing players and his son or daughter has to hear his input on how they could have won the game on the long ride home.

I was happily surprised to see Schultz sit in the box, maybe Sloan and Schultz can get to know each other well in the box after Green is back

I am very happy the Caps are winning now, back in first in the SE, and playing their best hockey going into the playoffs

I am still skeptical that BB is the coach to lead the Caps deep into the playoffs, much less the Cup -- I would love to be proved wrong

The three wins following the deadline are nice and were much needed, but we were 40 seconds and 1-goal away from only getting 3/6 pts. in those same games. Time to take it to another level.

I think we should bench Chimmy tonight, and let him get a little motivation in the pressbox. It's past-time for some results from him! In his place, promote Hendricks...the man's got a heart the size of Erskine's!! Slide DJK and his 5-8 minutes in on the 4th, and let's administer a beatdown unlike anything the Bolts have seen this year.

Sturm could probably also use a breather, so he should join Chimmy upstairs. Beagle would get a jersey and presto....we'd see the toughest lineup the Caps could possibly ice tonight. LET'S BURN THAT BUILDING DOWN!! (for you, hunterforcoach)

Posted by: vermontcaps | March 7, 2011 8:45 AM | Report abuse

I tell you two things that did show up in the scoresheet vt.

Erskine's big fat -1 (the only minus player for the Caps last night) for his criminally bad defense of a two-on-one that led to Florida's goal. Erskine didn't even try to force Repik into a saucer pass to Thomas.

But Erskine was able to lay out on the ice when he took his tripping penalty that he was serving when the Pathers tied the game up late in regulation.

Please Get Well Soon Sarge, Green, and Poti so we can relegate "Johnny Rockstar" to the Press Box where he belongs.
