Open thread: Capitals at Panthers

By Washington Post Sports Editors

logologo

Faceoff: 5 p.m., BankAtlantic Center; TV: CSN, NHLN; Radio: 1500 AM

Update 4:49 p.m.
Michal Neuvirth makes his sixth consecutive start for the Capitals this evening against the Panthers. In his pre-game comments to the media, Coach Bruce Boudreau said it's Neuvirth's time to prove he can carry a heavy workload for Washington.

"It's a reflection that two points are two points no matter where you get them," Boudreau said. "We understand Braden [Holtby] hasn't played in a couple weeks even though he's fully healthy. We want to see if Michal can do the job as a No. 1 back to back to back. We'll see how it goes."

Jeff Schultz did not take part in warm-ups and is a healthy scratch, according to a team spokesman. When discussing his line combinations this afternoon, Boudreau said that he believes Eric Fehr, who will miss his 21st game since dislocating his shoulder on Jan. 14, is close to returning.

"There's a hunger," Boudreau said of the lines. "They all want to stay in the lineup. We've got Eric Fehr ready to come back, who's a pretty good hockey player for our team. He's dying to get in so if there's a bump in the road he'll be in....I think he'd be ready to play if we needed him to."

On to what the line combinations should look like against the Panthers:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Arnott-Semin
Chimera-Johansson-Sturm
Hendricks-Gordon-Bradley

Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Hannan-Wideman
Erskine-Sloan

Goal
Neuvirth
Holtby

Scratches: Jeff Schultz,Semyon Varlamov (knee), Mike Green (head), Jay Beagle (upper body) and D.J. King.

4-2 Caps win

Posted by: patljr7 | March 6, 2011 4:06 PM | Report abuse

One of the simplest things McPhee could do to legitimately improve this team, particularly from a postseason perspective, is bring in 3-4 guys this offseason with extremely good work ethic, preferably 1 or 2 of them who also play with an edge.

These players don't need to be highly skilled or expensive and are readily available if a GM is looking for them. Think Matt Hendricks types but up front and on the backend. You can find some that are even better than Hendricks and these types can also bring additional skills depending on the player.

Another thing that could be done on top of that is bringing in a tougher, less player-friendly head coach - one who will hold players more accountable in certain areas and demand more of them from the perspective of work ethic and discipline.

I still get the sense that the players run the asylum around here. Bring in a head coach who will treat Ovechkin the way that Tortorella treats Gaborik. That's just an example but you should get my point.

There are still too many around here clamoring for the return of the run 'n gun Caps.

Run 'n gun has equalled one 'n done in case nobody noticed...

Flyers
Penguins
Canadiens

3 Game 7s at home.

First team to ever bow out that way for 3 consecutive years.

One of the only top seeds to lose to an 8th seed.

The sample size is growing, koolaiders.

Bad luck and other excuses can only be used for so long.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 6, 2011 4:19 PM | Report abuse

The Arnotts and Knubles will help but only in the short-term.

They are also doing it with grit, even from their superstars. That game against the Pens Friday night Zajac dropped the gloves which was good to see. I don't want Ovie/Semin/Backs/Green doing that on a regular basis but when it is warranted it would be nice to see them step up as Zajac did.

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 4:27 PM | Report abuse

See, even Philly can lose to the Rangers 7-0.

tmac2yao:

The Caps have improved on defense this year just by virtue of adding better players (Hannan, Wideman, plus an increase in the experience levels of Alzner and Carlson). They could probably stand to play with a little more offensive mindedness, and still benefit from improved defense by virtue of having better personnel on the back line.

You seem to base your argument strictly from a systems perspective; however, talent level certainly plays a role as well.

PP GOALS!!!!!

...will happen.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 6, 2011 4:44 PM | Report abuse

Reposting from the prior thread (d'oh!), apologies. Tmac, appreciate that you have thrown out some suggested solutions here:

________________

tmac - I get you (as always) and see the same thing.

But you aren't saying anything you haven't said a hundred times (more?) before.

Those are observations, not causes and factors.

I want to know why.

I'm as interested in whether a different coach could get more out of this team than Budreau, and whether the GM has put together a relatively soft team because he is incapable - by temperment - of doing otherwise.

And despite beginning the discussion yesterday, you never addressed your sense of why the Caps are so successful against the Pens, despite being far less hard-working and only marginally more talented, skill-wise.

agree somewhat, but it has been more than just better defensemen...there is definitely a new D minded style that BB implemented.

On another note...lets hope Carlson gets it together tonight...hopefully when Green is back he can get a night off...the guy just looks tired.

Posted by: capscoach | March 6, 2011 4:47 PM | Report abuse

Wow. According to katie on twitter, Jeff Schultz a healthy scratch

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 6, 2011 4:47 PM | Report abuse

hockeybuzz needs to stop reporting that the caps are going for a goalie again...it's the only thing they report on the caps!

Apparently we want Bryzgalov this summer...I mean it's possible that the team lost faith in varly (injury champ) but I doubt they are actively thinking about the summer trades yet.

Posted by: capscoach | March 6, 2011 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Sloan for Schultz? Even vermon and cstant know that's a bad idea.

(Presumably it's just a "maintenance day."

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | March 6, 2011 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Albright4Snapper,

That is simply music to my ears, it's about time they sat that pylon. And I was actually on board thinking he was improving until about a quarter way through this season.

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 4:55 PM | Report abuse

I didn't think Schultz had been playing great in the couple of games, but I would still prefer him over Sloan.

Posted by: griz0615 | March 6, 2011 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Hehehe Semin on the 2nd and 3rd line hahah

Posted by: Tondi | March 6, 2011 4:56 PM | Report abuse

stevie_in_gp,

Did not even think of that but if Sloan is paired with Hannan I think he will be fine. A message needed to be sent to the Sarge.

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 4:57 PM | Report abuse

PhilR, I believe the lines have been added to this post: look up^^.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | March 6, 2011 5:02 PM | Report abuse

If Fehr is ready to come back he should be taking Chimera's slot without a doubt. Let hands of stone start eating nachos and Esskays in the press box.

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Don't like the Erskine/Sloan pairing at all. Sloan should be with Hannan and Erskine with Wideman.

PSA:

"TV: CSN, NHLN"

The game today is not on NHL Network. What is on is a replay of the series against MTL. What is this some cruel joke, Carrera?

Posted by: ThisGuy | March 6, 2011 5:09 PM | Report abuse

I don't like Sloan playing period but maybe this is a good sign the when Green comes back that it will be Sloan/Shultz that will sit and not Erskine.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 6, 2011 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Game was originally scheduled to be on NHLN.

Not sure why it was pulled. Other sites still list the game as being on NHLN too.

But the NHL Network website hasn't listed this game in the last week.

Posted by: Cerealman | March 6, 2011 5:12 PM | Report abuse

And it's not simply an issue of it being blacked out in the local market (to CSN's benefit)?

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | March 6, 2011 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Joe B said it's on NHL Network in Canada.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 6, 2011 5:15 PM | Report abuse

I figured 90 was OK based on where the puck hit him. I wasn't sure if he'd be back in this game but I didn't think it would be serious.

19 having himself a game today.

Backstrom is playing great! As he usually does.

Posted by: hanks1 | March 6, 2011 5:43 PM | Report abuse

SHANKED SHOTS

...my guess is that we would lead the league!

Good play by Ovie and Backs.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | March 6, 2011 5:45 PM | Report abuse

After every period that we give up more than 1 oddman rush, Neuvirth (or whoever is in net) should be allowed to punch eeach player in the face once on his way to the dressing room, regardless of whether the player was responsible for the breakdown.

That oughtta get the message through eventually.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 6, 2011 5:48 PM | Report abuse

Anybody watch the East leading Flyers get whipped by the Rangers today? When the Caps got blown out, all I heard was how we were through -- hopeless GM, fire BB.

What's wrong over there? Didn't their brilliant GM make all the right trades? They've lost 4 in a row -- so how about the experts here explain how that could be happening?

Or does this just mean that the Rangers are a lock to win the Cup?

WTF's_DAD

zmega: You keep it. I predict you can do good things with it.

sign, nostrathomas

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 6, 2011 5:54 PM | Report abuse

hanks: None of that has anything to do with the fact that the Caps have played an average of 20-30 minutes a game this year.

The old saying is, don't worry about what the other guy does, worry about what you can do. With Caps talent, if they TRULY dedicated themselves to a solid effort every night, we can beat anyone.

I believe the average distance per shot will determine how far the Caps go. More shots from up close, more rebounds, more deflections, the more games they win in Spring. A boatload of perimeter shots, we lose. Hard work - we win; play like fancy dans - we lose.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 6, 2011 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Arnott was rather invisible that period btw....

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 5:59 PM | Report abuse

We gave up 16 SOG in the 1st to a team that played last night.

Sometimes a team playing the backend of a b2b comes out strong but I'd expect them to fade away as the game goes on.

If we work reasonably hard, we should be able to jump on them in this period.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 6, 2011 6:00 PM | Report abuse

We have to smack teams like FLA in the mouth, especially at this point in the season, and keep on TRUCKIN'!

GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 5:03 PM

Can you imagine Chimera eating nachos? He sticks his hand in the bowl and squashes all of them. And the cheese? He sticks a stoney fist in the bowl and then licks it off his knuckles. Oops! He spilled some!

zmega: Actually, nostrathomas has been on hiatus. Too hard to predict because they have been so inconsistent.

On another note, I hiked up to the Hollywood sign today. Was wondering if Jim Morrison had ever been up there.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 6, 2011 6:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 6:10 PM | Report abuse

The fatigue will really be setting in now for FLA. Time to jump on them over the next several min.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 6, 2011 6:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 6, 2011 6:20 PM | Report abuse

That was all on Hendricks, did you see the havoc he was causing in the crease?

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks should get credit for the goal.

Posted by: zmega | March 6, 2011 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else catch that look of pure joy on Gordon's face after he scored his second goal of the season? Yeah!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 6, 2011 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 6, 2011 5:59 PM

And Gordo scores on the rebound.

First, zmega predicts Backie; then, nostrathomas predicts a rebound as key to success; then, tmac says Panthers should be getting tired.

Perhaps the crystal ball is being passed around?

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 6:23 PM | Report abuse

PP goal would REALLY be great. Please.

Posted by: pkme | March 6, 2011 6:34 PM | Report abuse

we just can seem to get into a rhythm. all season, same story.

prime reason for low confidence by any and all.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 6, 2011 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Did anybody else notice how that whole last few minutes unfolded?

It started with us icing the puck on a play where we had more than ample time and space to get the puck into the FLA zone cleanly.

Alzner tried to hit a stick in the neutral zone but somehow missed badly. Icing.

After that, FLA pinned us in our own for a good stretch before we took the penalty.

The PK is coming up big but we should've been able to put up at least another goal in that period.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 6, 2011 6:39 PM | Report abuse

A lotta people knock Boyd Gordon. He's OK. Now that Steckel is gone, Gordon at $800K isn't bad for your 12th/13th forward. He scored a goal there and then made a nice pokecheck at the end of the period. His PK work has also been good of late.

wtf

I think they have looked decent the last few games. Much better the last three.

Posted by: pkme | March 6, 2011 6:40 PM | Report abuse

tominsocal,

The reason that BGordon gets knocked is he can not stay healthy and a 4th line center should be throwing some check out there which he never does. They can do much better in the off season at 4th line center, it was time to part ways with that guy last spring.

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 6:45 PM | Report abuse

The longer you let a tired team stay in the game the more confidence they will gain, look for the Panthers to make a surge in the third if the Caps do not score an early one.

Posted by: PhilR | March 6, 2011 6:49 PM | Report abuse

As the SOG indicates, we are getting beat in our zone. If Neuvy was not standing on his head, we would be down 3-1. Hope BB is reading them the riot act now about getting to the puck first in our end.

Semin showed up finally.

Reminiscient of Ovechkin's game the other day where he played poorly then came through in the clutch.

Should've put this one away earlier though.

On the Fla second goal, I thought the Fla player took a dive for the first penalty. Then Wideman with a bonehead play and it was 5 on 3.

The Caps didn't look so good to me tonight. Especially when you consider Fla was on the 2nd leg of a back-to-back. As for the newcomers, I thought Arnott was so-so, Wideman had a bad game and was Sturm playing tonight?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 6, 2011 7:39 PM | Report abuse

The Tampa game should be a great one I hope. Does anyone want the Devils make the playoffs? I kind of would like that I think.

Posted by: lasthe | March 6, 2011 7:34 PM

If you're talking to me, yes. And I still do.

Not sure what I said that would indicate otherwise.

Recognizing a good play does not = don't want to trade him to fill greater needs up the middle.

I've also said numerous times that Semin is an extremely gifted player. I just see greater needs on this team. If we didn't already have a $10 mil per wing, it would be a different story.

No offense but many on here are darksiders like you are. I can be negative but you might be the most critcal. Not saying you are wrong on most things. In fact many of your opinions most of this year have been accurate more times than not. Time will tell. If The Caps stink up the joint in the Playoffs then BB will be gone. As far as Semin one does wonder if he wants to play in The NHL long term. He might want to play in Russia after his contract expires.

Nice win but still, obvious gaps we need to resolve if we are going deep post season. Giving up too many second and third shots, defense needs to clear better.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | March 6, 2011 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Gordon with a game high 4 BS (no other player had more than 2) and what would've probably been the game-winning goal if not for the late penalties. Hendricks made that goal possible.

We outshotblocked the Panthers 16-13. We seem to winning in that area more often recently, probably mostly due to Hannan and Alzner recently as well.

Bradley with a game high 5 hits.

We outhit the Panthers 29-18.

Only 2 giveaways according to the scorekeeper. 12 for the Panthers, including 5 by Weiss.

6 SOG for Backstrom and he won 11 of 17 faceoffs.

We got outshot in the game and heavily in the 1st pd.

Glad for the win - I noticed that among the top teams in the league it has really bunched up. Even Vancouver has 16 losses - the caps have 20 - the best in East is 19 losses by Philly...this is the best time of year to get on a roll.

The Caps did just try and sit on that lead in the 3rd period which is OK if they draw penalties and not take them. The Caps are lucky to have good PK this year.

Still want some more penalties caused against our opponents.

Did you see the comments by Guy Boucher, Lightning coach after last night. He was not disappointed in his teams play on Sat night but he was "shocked" they weren't prepared.

With 4 games between now and next Sunday - Washington can slay many evil dragons all at once...

If Fehr is ready to come back he should be taking Chimera's slot without a doubt. Let hands of stone start eating nachos and Esskays in the press box.

Posted by: PhilR

Agree completely with this.

----------------------

Can someone tell me what the heck Erskine was doing when he got that tripping penalty? That was an absolutely horrible play that looked to be made out of panic. Erskine has no composure whatsoever and panics. When he panics it often leads to trouble. As each game goes by Erskine is proving himself to be more and more of a liability. I can't wait for Green to get back.

The Wideman slash was not a good penalty to take either, but those slashing calls are often only called if the stick breaks. If the Florida player's stick does not break it isn't penalty. It wasn't a good penalty to take, but it wasn't due to stupidity or panic. Just a little to hard of a stick check and the stick broke.

One thing I really like about Wideman's play was his ability to make accurate passes in the neutral zone to get the puck up the ice. Especially in 5-on-5 situations. The Caps, as a team, have struggles mightily with that this season(which, IMO, has been the biggest reason for some of their struggles, inaccurate passing). Having Wideman back there will help cure that some.

Carolina or Buffalo.

But I'm not particularly concerned about it because you have to be able to beat anybody. Personally, I wouldn't mind Montreal either because there would be no chance of the Caps taking them lightly this year.

I want to play the Habs in the playoffs. I thought the Caps were the better team last year, and I think the Caps are better this year. And I think the Caps would be highly motivated to play the Habs. Of all the possible playoff opponents, I would put the Habs at the top of my preferred list.

BB is a buffoon and should be canned at once, but I'm resigned to the fact we'll be stuck w/him through the end of this year.

@sgm

Rock Star panic? Ha, too funny! Looked pretty clear that he caught an edge on the bad Fla. ice and stumbled, and then made the smart play by taking away any pass to the crease. A bad call by the refs, as it looked like the bottom of the Fla players skate grazed Erskine's shoelace, and he sold it with a dive. I think Locker might've chimed-in similar sentiments.

And give it up for Johnny E. being the glue of the backline again, playing his 4th straight game w/a different partner. Tomorrow, it'll be 5 consecutive games with a different partner.

Keep on rockin', Rock Star, but it's time to kick some ass!!

The Flyers have been outscored 12-1 in their last 5 periods. Their work ethic was atrocious over that period. They were absent today. Maybe they were out drinking too late last night. The best work they showed was when Mike Richards got beat up by Dubinksy. It was a pathetic showing over this weekend by the Flyers.

You're a goof !

Flyers went to the finals. They have the "elbow room" to lay an egg.

We lost another game 7 at home to an 8th seed, because we didn't hustle in game 5 at home.

The Flyers played like rabid dogs for a month last year. I hate them, but I admire them. Let's see what our boys do in the play offs. Arnott is a great addition because he dilutes the Euro-wimp factor on this team, and he has HOISTED !!!!!!!!!

This man knows the physical and mental effort required to lift the bowl. Hopefully he becomes "de facto Captain" during the play offs.

It takes some big stones to criticize the Flyers after what they did last year.(probably more ignorance than stones ! And,yet another caps fan who didn't watch beyond our exit !)

Semin doesn't score that in the play offs. How many goals for the Begonia in the last 14 play off games ? Needed one goal against the Habs from him, and didn't get it.

Locker's comment was a classic ? I wonder if Semin's P.J.s have Begonias on them ?

Get real, Vokoun stops that shot !

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | March 6, 2011 8:44 PM | Report abuse

@sgm3 and others, I presume,

I was reading the game day thread on one of the Flyers Blog, Broad Street hockey, and the comments were sounding an awful lot like the comments Caps fans were saying in December. Some were almost rooting for the Flyers to get clobbered even worse than they were so they could get their heads out of their A****. And they were talking about how the Flyers seemed to have no heart. A few were even worried about whether the Flyers could even hold onto their playoff home field advantage.

Notable Parallels between current Flyers and the Caps of December:

1) Losing streak
2) Team is battling the flu
3) Got clobbered 7-0 by Rangers
4) Their captain gets into fight with Brandon Dubinsky in attempt to energize team
5) Fans complaining team has no heart

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 6, 2011 8:45 PM | Report abuse

The two teams I do not want the Caps to play early, maybe not at all, are the Rags and Flyers. The Rags have really got the Caps number this year, and the Flyers have looked dominant.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | March 6, 2011 8:49 PM | Report abuse

@hess

Look buddy we pay the salaries. It's fairly easy to see when some one isn't playing "all out" in hockey due to the speed and physicality. The caps don't work hard !!!!!!!!

Hopefully you keep adding guys like Hendricks and Arnott and we push aside the guys who are only playing for a check.

Long time fans want to hoist the big ugly punch bowl, and are saavy enough to know when guys are dogging it.

Torts has the Rags kicking ass because he knows what it takes to win a Cup !!!!!!!

If the Caps don't start playing with the mentality of the Pens, Rags, B's, etc, we will not win the Cup. That's why we are so critical. Hawks and Flyer kicked the tar out of each other last year. Bodies were flying everywhere. We lost to a "back up" Slovak with bad hair !

They constantly visit the finals. We make excuses while they play on for weeks !

I don't EVER want to play the Flyers in the play offs. Only guys like Hunter can punch out the Flyers in the playoffs, and we don't have a Hunter !

That town will not let them play like cr@p in the play offs, our town gives the Caps a pass every year !!!!!

Posted by: joek443

There is no doubt that Halak played amazing the last three games of that series. It isn't a theory, it is a fact. But a goalie, like any other player is a part of a team. One of Montreal's most important players played great. That was a big part of their winning. Just like when a pitcher in baseball plays great. There others guys played well too, but there is no denying Halak played great that series just like Halak played great against the Pens as well.

There were more factors to the loss as well(we have gone over them to death), but there is no denying that Halak playing amazing was a huge factor.

"STOP THE FLYERS NONSENSE !!!!!!

Another way to look at that is that they constantly lose in the finals. Just saying.

Also, the Flyers have been in the finals twice over the past 20 years. I'm not sure that is the definition of "constant".

We had little traffic in front of Halak, because we don't play play off hockey here. End of story - watched us beat the best ever - Hasak - with constant traffic.

Sgm3, I would not be a goat's blooder if I had my team in the finals as much as the Flyers. At least I would know that my organization is constantly trolling for "play off guys". Which is true about the Flyers, Pens and Wings.

We constantly field teams that find ways to collapse when it matters. After the 2 Bobby Clark cups the Flyers went to the finals in 76, 80, 85, 87, 97, and 2010. That's bad ass !! They lost to Bowman's Habs, Bossy, Wayne, Feds, and Toews.

I would have a great attitude if that was my club's loss history, because eventually they punch down the door and Hoist !!!

So go ahead down play the Flyers. But you are a fool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (for you steve)

Dump GMGM, and run this club like the Flyers, Pens , and Wings are managed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The relevance of all the cup appearances the Flyers made from before 1990 to what they are now is exactly equal to the relevance all the Super Bowl appearances the Redskins had from 1981-1992 in how they play now. It is irrelevant.

Over the last 20 years the Flyers have won TWO more SC finals games than the Caps. They have been to ONE more SC finals, and each team has won ZERO of them.

When you mention the success of the Pens and Red Wings, I say absolutely. When you mention the so called recent success of the Flyers, I say "hold on".

This doesn't say anything about the teams this year though. The Flyers have a very good team and could go far this year. I also think the Caps could go far as well. There has never been more parity in the NHL as there is right now, which should make for a wide open NHL playoffs where any team could win any series, just like last year. It should make more entertaining TV.
