Has ANYONE here said they like the Twitter chat?

...more importantly...

DOES ANYONE AT WAPO CARE?

GO CAPS!

No one likes it and no one cares. I say we organize a time where no one comments on this thread, get everyone to use the lineup thread until a postgame thread is created, that would send a message.

The game appears to be blacked out where I am in Fla. Also, atdhe.net just shows a test screen. Somebody pretty powerful around here.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 7:11 PM | Report abuse

Game is on VS.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

@wtf- If anyone at WAPO cared(or had a clue) they wouldn't have wasted their and everyone's time with the farewell piece on Wilbon.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 9, 2010 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Nice PP for WTF just couldn't get it in but created several good chances. Still too much standing around on our PP. We need movement so that they lose track of someone and they get open. Standing around is not going to do anything.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:19 PM | Report abuse

The worst part about this stupid twitter #$#) is that 2 of the 4 things I see everytime I refresh are from the Toronto game.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

VS is blocked out where I am in Fla. Have it now on atdhe.net.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Nice give n go there.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 9, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Did Varly make a second save on that 2-1 when he was spinning???

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Yeah he did make 2 saves on that one. I guess it is good to be both lucky and good.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

Got to get one on this PP because you know it is going to start going the other way soon.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Really HAVE to score now.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

They deserve to lose this game.

...there, I said it!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 7:35 PM | Report abuse

They deserve to lose this game.

...there, I said it!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

I couldn't care much less that they didn't score. That happens sometimes, esp. early in a game.

This is the way they have to play hockey. They came out hard and have been outworking Florida in all 3 zones. You draw more penalties when you play that way.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Oh boy, another hot goalie. Oh boy.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

TWICE!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

This has been one of the 2 or 3 best periods of hockey this season for the Caps despite not scoring.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I agree with tmac (that feels weird to type). That being said they need to start finishing.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

I think I've seen this movie before...

Posted by: joek443 | December 9, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse

No finish again whatsoever. Making the other goalie look great again. PP is a complete joke for all that talent. BB doesn't even put his best center and playmaker out first on the 5on3. Shows how much he's lost it out there, just like the rest of his players.

This team's in a complete chicken with its head cut off status right now.

Posted by: BigGameSid | December 9, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

How sad is it that fans are booing when the Caps are playing about as good as they have all season?

People sometimes care about nothing other than the scoreboard.

You can be playing poorly and be up a couple of goals but in the long run, playing the right way and developing the right habits is what should matter most.

Terrific period of hockey. That was clinical despite not scoring.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Sorry ass Caps. All those PPs and nothing to show. They should lose this game based on that period.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | December 9, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

A good period

NOTHING to show for it.

...damn shame.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

They are taking awful shots. Nobody is in front getting rebounds. Yeah they had a lot of zone time, whoopty doooooooooooooo

Posted by: LloydChristmas | December 9, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps play the next 40 min of the game anywhere near that level and lose, I can live with that.

At this juncture of the season, I am far more concerned with just about everything other than finishing on their chances.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have got to have some of the most pessimistic fans in the NHL. Other teams have lost 3 straight, like Detroit, and you won't see their message boards as negative as this one is.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Yea, those 2-on-1 shorthanded chances need to be cut down big time. We've given up an abundance of those in recent weeks and have gotten lucky or bailed out by our goalie for the most part.

Still, there are game where you can't score easily, can't capitalize on your PPs, etc... and you need to be able to win a low-scoring tight game.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Nice play, good positioning by 8 in the d-zone. That's nice to see.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 8:10 PM | Report abuse

What I'm looking to see is if the Caps can keep things tight defensively after not being able to score on their numerous chances.

I'd be ecstatic if they can win a 1-0 or 2-1 game.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

power play 0 for 5...what a joke

Posted by: wendel2 | December 9, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

After blowing 5 straight PP's.

They better be ready to kill 5 straight...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

OMG

Their PP numbers are absolutely terrible.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

This is getting ridiculous.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

We might set a record tonight for most time on the PP in a single game.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, but whats the 0 for ? record on the PP?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Hard work their by WTF to get that puck to Senor Changa.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 9, 2010 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Other than a couple of breakdowns late in our PPs, we've given Florida nothing. Talk about the ice being tilted.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 9, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse

I was looking for the stats to see our teams shooting % compaired to the league average but I can't find it. Anyone have any ideas. I have already checked NHL, ESPN, and hockey-reference.

@Ice

How many championships, playoff series wins, and Cup finals Wings fans have had to "endure" over the years compared to Caps fans?

The Caps are starting to look more and more like the East version of the San Jose Sharks. Congratulations?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Even OV doesn't play physical anymore. This guy is the biggest choke artist in the game today. Playing like a sieve both ends of the rink. What a pretender. He sure is earning his paycheck 30 games into the season eh? 10mil for this pile of sht every night and failure in the playoffs a certainty.

When are you folks going to start calling him out? The players aren't. The coach isn't. Mgt and ownership won't.

GO CAPS

**CHOKE**

Varlamov ought to find a team that supports his extraordinary talent.

Posted by: tjconnor | December 9, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

i think the caps could follow 30 Rock on NBC's thursday night line up because they are frickin' hilarious. I'm certainly cracking up. It's really has gotten to the point where I have to laugh because it's just so ridiculous.

If we make it to the play-offs, whoever we'll play in the first round will be very happy.

Posted by: natresgroup | December 9, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

That's how you score in this type of game. I don't see the Caps doing that.
---------------------------------

That's because the Caps have too many "skill" players who think they're above that sort of stuff. They do it occasionally but not every game.

That's something that's not gonna change till they ship out one or more of those floaters. I don't believe it's something they can learn to do.

Sounds simple enough, just crash the net but it's like having great speed... either you have it or you don't. They need a Gartner for Ciccarelli 2.0.

Posted by: joek443 | December 9, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Well if this keeps up much longer then maybe they will ship someone out. Let's see what happens in the third, I predict Fla will go into a shell and rely on defense & Vokun.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

BGS please go away, you have no idea what you are talking about. Ovechkin not playing physical? He is still 4th in the NHL in hits. He is also 3rd in the NHL in points.

You are nothing more than a troll please go back to you bridge, there are some kids about to cross you need to scare.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Fehr had 5 shots on goal after 8 minutes. If he scores, even only once, this is a very different game. Fehr has no upsides when not scoring.

Posted by: atybat | December 9, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

If we make the playoffs natresgroup? This is what I mean about pessimistic Caps fans. We have played a few poor games, we are still 2nd in the East. Feel what you want about how we may do in the playoffs but saying if we make the playoffs after a few poor games shows that you are willing to jump off the bandwagon as soon as things look bad.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

BB is gonna need a pretty BIG, cup holder. What a jinx. That commercial is over 2 years old. That commercial pisses me off..

Posted by: LloydChristmas | December 9, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

They are just not very dominant this year. Either they will fall on their face this year and not make the playoffs or they will make a gut check postseason run like Pittsburgh did in 2009. What is worse is that they are going to be 0-4 with Hannan in the line up. Is he bad luck or what? Is that why Colorado was so willing to make that trade?

Posted by: JohnWWW | December 9, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wendel2 | December 9, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

It is amazing that many of the same people who were saying last year during the win streak that is didn't matter are the same ones saying this current 0-3-1 streach is a sign we are going to be a laughing stock. 4 bad games in the playoffs, big deal, 4 bad games in December, not a big deal. Don't forget in the first two periods the Caps played very good hockey, they just didn't score. It happens so times. Just like there are times when the Caps are totally outplayed and win. It goes each way but if they play every game 3 periods like they did the first two periods they will be tough to beat in the regular season and the playoffs.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

The Caps look like they have quit for the night. There are two points I agree with BGS. One being that Crosby at this very moment is the best hockey player in The NHL. The second is that Wings fans are more patient because of their rich winning hostory. However you all might remember in the 90's the fans in Detroit wanted to fire Yserman from Capitan and fire everything and anything that moved on those teams.

Posted by: pkme | December 9, 2010 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: festus75 | December 9, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

wendel2 Most of that TOI is because of the PP time. Since he has more PP TOI then ES TOI.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

@icehummer... oh and silly me thought it was because he stays out too long as per his self serving work ethic

Posted by: wendel2 | December 9, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I know in The NHL that any team can beat any other team. That being said losing twice in one week to subpar teams is something else. BB at this rate will not make it out of December.

Posted by: pkme | December 9, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

One thing is for sure, you can't compare Crosby and OV this year. At this point they aren't even in the same league (yet they are:)). I'm tired of the argument. This year, so far, Crosby is better.

Let Crosby win the Rocket, MVP, and all the other hardware that's available. So be it. It hasn't mattered in the least for the Caps when OV has won it. It makes no difference in the post season.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | December 9, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Guys, it is not hot goalie! Last week it was Pavelec, now it is Vokoun, then in May it will be another "hot goalie excuse", and we will see usual picture of failining dump and chase hockey. So two nights ago we lost to 27th team in the league, and tonight are loosing to the 26th. Fire BB, before it is too late!!!!

That just makes me want to go on a Chad Dukes rant. If you don't want to support the team. Get out stop calling yourself a fan. I can understand not wanting to spend hard earned money or not wanting to sit in the upper deck when you can see better on TV but if you are giving up FREE good seats for a game bacause you thought we might lose please give all of your Caps items to a real fan who just can't afford anything. This isn't like not taking free Redskins tickets where they have been horrible for years. The Caps have made the playoffs the last several years and while they have not been very sucessful there they have been very successful and are the most successful team in the area by a wide margin. Even guys like cstanton and tmac who often critize the team you can tell they do it because they wish they would do better and they think they know how to do that better then those who are currently in charge. If you are only going to support a team when they are winning you are the definition of a bandwagon fan and you are worse then the troll who only come here when we have a bad game to rub it in. Please go away and don't come back.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I thought the Caps did a lot of good things tonight. If they play the way they did for the majority of this game, they'll win much more often than they lose.

Having said that, they had a few soft moments in front their net and paid for it.

Posted by: pkme | December 9, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

After that first period it was gradually downhill for the Caps. It's like, well we can't beat the goalie so what's the point? If they had played the second and third like they played the first they probably would have won. The team has no guts.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Since Bruce said this morning that players will be scratched based on merit, maybe he needs to scratch Ovie and Backstrom for a game.

I know the Caps should have converted on at least 1 PP with Ovie and Green playing just about all 16 minutes of PP time. But maybe, just maybe, they didn't convert on a single PP BECAUSE Ovie and Green were playing just about all 16 minutes of PP time.

Oh yes we lost two games to bad teams in a row the coach needs to be fired the team is horribe this never happens to a good team and great players don't go cold like Ovechkin has. Wait the Pens were 8-8-2 before their current winning streak and Crobsy only had 12 goals and 16 assists? They lost at home to Toronto and had to so to OT against the Islanders in back to back games at home after losing their first two in a new building? All teams have up and downs. We are in a down right now. The Pens are in a up after starting on a down. Everyone needs to stop overreacting to every game.

@icehammer...

yeah, i said if.. because that's how i feel, let me have my thoughts. and i'm not a bandwagon fan. i've been going to games since i was 4 years old back in the first year the caps were in the league. i've never once stopped being a fan of the caps. so go F yourself for calling me a bandwagon fan without knowing me.

if you can be happy that this team has looked like crap then so be it. that's your opinion, don't tell others how to think.

if some of us want to be pessimistic, let us be angry, if you don't like it, move on and read the next post.

why don't the people that are ok with our team looking like crap start your own board where you can all hold hands and hug and be happy. i have a little more passion for my team and yes, i expect better from the top on down.

again icehammer97 the worst thing you can say is i'm a bandwagon fan and you don't even know me, that really p*sses me off.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

I guess what I meant to say is they seem not to have the will to win at the moment. If it doesn't come easy then they're not willing to put the work in to get it done. It seems as though it's just not that important to them.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 9, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

This is strange. Varly was fine, the defense played well. The offensive skill has evaporated. The offense consists of a player going one-on-one and having his shot blocked by the defender. Passes, when attempted, are not on target. Even carrying the puck is a challenge at times. Did you see Fehr's shot from the wing that went 10 feet over the goal? Not a deflection, just shot almost straight up! No presence in front of the opposing goalie to force the goalie to re-focus.

I have said this last week and I mean it!

Bruce Boudreau has got to go! He can't coach! Period. You can call out the players all you want but week in and week out this team has done nothing but underachieve and to me that's a product of coaching! Caps can't win with BB behind the bench! I have believed that for two years and nothing has changed. The coach has to set the tone for the team and get his players in the right position to make plays and he isn't doing any of that! HE can't make up his mind what lines he wants on the ice from game to game and thinks going into the third is a good time to mix it up. Just a terrible job. And as for Ovie...he is lazy and fat! I don't think Ovie is even aware of how bad he looks on the ice right now!

Oh...and I have to hear from those fans out there who hate reading negative stuff and say.."it's early don't worry about it they will be okay come the playoffs.". This team is in total disarray and in danger of becoming average.

BB must go!

Posted by: ekbinion68 | December 9, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

okay, don't need to overreact. but i'm pretty sure you could dig up a bunch of comments before the montreal series where there was a lot of "overreaction" as you would call it. seemed to become a reality after game 7.

Go Caps Go! Who cares how they play in the regular season anymore? This team has had the same ending result every postseason, no matter how well they've played during the regular season. Didn't the Flyers just make the playoffs on the final game of the season, and went to the cup finals? I'm pretty sure that the 08-09 Pens weren't even in the top 8 seeds in the month of February, and won the Stanley Cup? Cry me a river, this team spoiled us last season. I'd rather the Caps find their struggles now, than late in the season like we do every year.

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | December 9, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

@Ice

Oh yea, there's nothing wrong with OV. He's still doing okay in terms of stats vs the rest of the league. Pretty soon you'll be comparing him to average 1st/2nd line players. He's getting paid 9mil, 10mil per top salary in the league to be as good as most of the good players in the league?

Do you even watch the games with any objectivity whatsoever? OV is a pile of sht right now there's 20 players in this league that unbiased fans would take ahead of him if you value a player's overall game. That's how far off he's dropped right now.

Where's the responsibility and accountability? What a failure. He's sucked since Mother Russia lost in the Olympics, that's the only thing that matters to him.

Oh and I forgot to add, the WASH media is afraid to call him out too. Blind sheep nation.

Posted by: BigGameSid | December 9, 2010 9:53 PM | Report abuse

It's obvious that the players don't respect or fear BB. This is a young group of players and they need a firm hand. If I was a young millionaire player and saw the bird calls and Hadeed commercial, then had BB come to practice and start yelling at me, I would certainly laugh at him inside... What I think we are seeing is a situation where GMGM told BB that he had to develop a tighter defensive system and BB can't do it because that is not his way (just read his book). You can't learn to coach defensive systems in the NHL.
I believe that GMGM will have very short patience with BB, especially after he has provided him with all the elements to win. Time to bring the Hunters ouot of the OHL.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS AND BRUTAL OBSERVATIONS:
Wow talk about looking like a pile of crap - that's exactly what the Caps are right now. A bad fart in the schedule extending over a series of games. Who knows how long it lasts.

FIRST @BIGGAMESID- shut up. Seriously you're babbling posts about Crosby vs. Ovie blah blah blah. Sid's on fire good for him. Ovie is in a funk and not good. Have a little class and make REAL observations rather than come on here and bash. Ovie hit the post and had 3 or 4 big hits I can remember. He can always be better for sure but get off the constant bashing. It's old news like you.

LAICH AND FEHR - some of you will jump on me for adding Laich but if there's a way these two can be gone through trades for at least somewhat better upgrades - DO IT. Most of Laich's points show up on the powerplay. 5-on-5 he tries to lean into a guy and get to the net and we all see how easy he is pushed off the puck. Sure he's a good quote but I'd rather see a guy driving to the net. Fehr - LOL I've said enough on him.

THIS TEAM FULL OF SHOOTERS: Because of that it almost seems like they forget how to stickhandle a puck around people. At times they look good but tonight - hell they couldn't even make solid passes. Everything was in the skates.

KILLER INSTINCT: This weakness is rearing its ugly head again. You knew with all those PP chances gone and nothing to show for what was going to happen. This team BETTER GET DOWN AND CRASH THE NET AND START KNOCKING PEOPLE OVER TO GET PUCKS. They got outworked by the WORST team in their crap division.

FIRE BOB WOODS: This defensive mind coach that Boudreau brought up is just not cutting it. It seems like this team forgets where it has to be in the defensive zone. WHERE THE HELL WAS THE D-MAN THAT WAS TO BE STANDING ON TOP OF THE CREASE TO CLEAR THAT SHOT OFF THE CROSSBAR OUT ON THE SECOND GOAL. Instead an easy empty netter.

NO MORE BULLS**T MAINTENANCE FOR ANYONE BOUDREAU: The stars that are nowhere to be found just might find it a little more help to their game if they actually showed up for these optional practices rather than take a maintenance day. Just showing up from game to game isn't going to make you better.

BOUDREAU - MOVE OVIE TO THE RIGHT WING: I don't know if Boudreau is just dumb but Ovie lit it up in that game against Carolina on RW. Your star is struggling - do anything, something to get him going again.

PUTTING IT IN PERSPECTIVE: You don't lose to Atlanta, Toronto and Florida all in a row but maybe it's a point like this in a season where things can turn around. Look how dominant the Caps were against the league - especially their division last year. Where did that get them in the end? Maybe it's adversity like this they need now to help them going down the stretch later in the season. REMEMBER PEOPLE - it's a long season. This year was not going to be a cakewalk again.

IT'S BEEN A FRUSTRATING NIGHT.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS.

Good for the fans to boo that bunch of trash off the ice tonight.

That's the only bright spot in the game.

The only way out of decades of failure is with the fans raising expectations and voicing their displeasure.

com'on you know we just ran into another "hot" goalie. lol
Stanley Cup winning teams find a way to "cool off" hot goalies. I don't understand BB and his ever changing line combos. The team plays a game or two really well and he still sees the need on next game to shake the lines all up..I just don't get it. I remember last year Knuble and a few others made comments about how it would be nice to play some games with the same line combos for a while so you can get some rhythm going.
His coaching style is getting really stale and I think he is losing the team slowly but surely.

Posted by: festus75 | December 9, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan in the second yes, in the third yes until they gave up the 2nd goal then they fell apart. They were out working the Panthers in the corners and were in the offensive zone a vast majority of the game and with their play forced the refs to call even more penalities on the Panthers dispite the calls being 5-0 in the first. You know the calls are going to all be on the Caps but they still draw a few including a short 5-3. I think the PP needs to move but 5 on 5 we dominated that game for the first 40 minutes except for the 5 seconds at the end of the second.

@natresgroup your statment was basicly. I didn't want to go, for free, because I thought we might lose. In other words. I don't want to go cheer for my team because we might lose. Please tell me how that isn't only supporting a team when they are winning which is what it means when you are called a bandwagon fan. Like I said there are kids who never got to go to a game because they cannot afford it. Those are the kids that would like to go and see the team win but would be happier then the kid in the Ovechkin jersey ad just to go to a game. You however decide not to go because the team is playing bad the last week. You are not going because the team is not winning. That is being a bandwagon fan and I may not know you but by your actions you show the kind of fan you are. If this team does make it far in the playoffs don't go to any of the games, they might lose.

"Good for the fans to boo that bunch of trash off the ice tonight."

Booing is the only cheer most fans at the Caps games know. What happens if the Caps win two or three games in a row? Will everybody start placing their name on the Stanley Cup? That's what I've seen on here every time the Caps go on a winning streak, and then the opposite happens when a losing streak begins.

Ice, To my mind they didn't dominate like they did in the first. This led to increased confidence for Fla and the result we all saw. That first goal was crucial.

Good for the fans for booing the team because after this string of performance and the way they got OUTWORKED by the worst team in their division - they deserved to boooooo. I wish I'd been standing right over top of their tunnel going to the locker room. I wouldn't be yelling obscenities. I'd be yelling at where their heart is at. Posted by: icehammer97 | December 9, 2010 10:14 PM | Report abuse

I don't think it is reasonable to look at the Caps and say this is just a little slump and assume that everything will automatically turn around. The season is more than a third over, and some conclusions can be drawn. Overall, the team has played OK but not great. I would not have said this before, but I think the biggest problem is at the offensive end. The goaltending has been OK, the defense is adequate with the addition of Hannan. But offensively, three of the Big Four are having off years. Only Semin has been performing up to (and often above) his expected level. Ovi is just not right, for whatever reason. Green is playing better defensively, he is carrying the puck well, but he is not contributing anywhere near his normal level on the offensive end. Backstrom has been OK, but not as crisp as we have come to expect with the puck. This team is going nowhere with three of their best offensive players having off years.

Just a guess but it looks like the opposing coaches have been studying The Caps weaknesses. Interesting. Also where is the Dino or Dale on this team. They look scared to go to the net. Every goal must be a masterpiece. A piece of crap goal counts the same. We also seem to suck at hitting. Another trade is needed. We need more grit and someone who loves to annoy goalies and and park himself in front of the net all the time. A big mean and nasty center who actually can score and pay the price.

Posted by: natresgroup | December 9, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse

@ FloridaCapsFan. You aren't going to get too many periods where you outshoot a team 18-6 and are in the zone almost the entire period. That being said we still we in the offensice zone most of the period and were outshooting them and they had more penalities called dispite the first period until the 5 on 3 which is where the momentum changed in my mind. Yes we killed it but it was the first time pretty much the entire game were the play was constantly in our zone and that is what gave them confidence to do it 5 on 5. That is where the game went from being in their zone a vast majority of the game and made it so they actually had some zone time. They didn't score on the PP but they built on that and got the goal. In the third we were close to even other then on the scoreboard until we didn't score on the one PP we had in that period. In my mind that is when the team shut down and it was no longer a game it was just how long until we officially lost.

Wilson never did fun things. You are kidding right. Oh Alan May said BB is the best coach The Capitals have ever had. May I have never disagreed with you more. The Murray brothers were pretty good. Wilson got the Caps to the CUp, right? Even if Detroit did smoke them. Terry Murray got the Caps to the conference finals I believe in 1990. What the heck are you talking about. Brian at least got past the first round many times, I am trying to remember the talent level of those teams. Maybe as teams they played better. I like BB but do not at this point proclaim him the best coach The Capitals have had.

Posted by: pkme | December 9, 2010 10:27 PM | Report abuse

I am a long time die hard Caps fan, and I agree with everything BGS posted tonight.

Yes, the Pens slumped the year they won the Cup, but they made it to the finals the previous year. They knew they had it in them to succeed. This Caps team has nothing but a history of failure to fall back on.

And yes, this is Ovie's team, and 12 goals through this point in the season ain't cuttin it. He is paid to score, not pass. Yes the opposing D clamps down on him, but don't you think the try to do the same to Sid? How's it workin agaist him?

Sid works his a** off. Ovie parties his a** off. What a joke he is becoming.

And yes, the DC media, especially our local hockey broadcasters barely say a bad word about him. I would love to hear Alan May talk about Ovie to Logger off mike.

@PKME - what series were you watching in the '98 Finals with the Caps/Wings. Yes yes they swept the Caps but the first 3 games were decided by a goal. Trust me the serious might've been 4-0 but it's not exactly like Detroit beat the Caps 8-0 every game. Give a little more credit.

@Mikewashkevich - nice post. I think Ovie still feels he has to glide at times and I wish some people would start to call him out a little more. Overall player - Sid is far better than Ovie. Crosby has skill - Ovie has skill but it seems they set him up to shoot more. Boudreau needs to bring Ovie down off the point and put him in a winger position and put Carlson and Green back on the points. Setup the one timers from the points like with Gonchar. Both have cannons and should let it go and let Ovie and others crash the net for rebounds. Stars have to find a way to step it up. Ovie is MIA.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | December 9, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

I still can not believe that Alan May proclaimed BB the best coach the Caps have had. I place him at this point number 4. If the Caps do better in the playoffs than Brian Murray than he goes to 3. If he gets the Caps to the Cup finals then as a Capital coach he would go to tied for number 1 with Wilson. If the Caps win the CUP then he would be number 1 by himself. He must have an issue with The Murrays or Wilson.

Posted by: pkme | December 9, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

pkme, What I'm talking about is I seem to remember RW doing fun things with the team when he thought they were too tight (so I think you're wrong there). I am merely suggesting BB might try the same. I never mentioned the Murray brothers. I know RW got them to the SC (after all the top seeds got knocked out in the first round). I never proclaimed BB to be the best coach the Caps have had. I don't know enough about ice-hockey to make proclamations about individual players or coaches.

This is what makes me scratch my head whenever someone says on here that they will be just fine no matter how bad things look right now.

Based on what, their recent history of playoff success??

No what happens during the season doesn't really matter once the playoffs begin. However this team has NEVER shown under BB that they can put together a string of 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 or 3-2 type wins at any time.

Mike

You are correct. I did watch those games. It was the most excited I have ever been about a Washington team. My only point is May proclaiming BB the best coach of all time seems way off the mark at this time. He needs to go deeper in the playoffs than the Murrays and Wilson to even make that point. At this point it is not even close. Two first round losses and a 2nd round loss for BB. I just looked up those guys records and how they did in the playoffs and all of those gentlemen have done more. The Caps were comparable to an NFL team going 15-1 last year in the regular season. What happened to Marty in San Diego when they lost their first playoff game. Regardless the Caps were outcoached in Montreal. Oh the hot goalie arguement. Yes we have all heard this for a very long time. I have changed my mind from earlier this year and think they should give BB the whole year to prove himself. If the Caps fail again in the playoffs then obviously he would have to go.

Because many won’t finish reading my post, I want to get this out early. Not that I need any validation, but those who read my post about the Pens game last night and watched the Versus telecast, I’ve gotta ask you: did Engblom and McCarty rip me off? Their 1st intermission look at the Pens was MY POST EXACTLY. Funny how I was ridiculed by some here.

As for the game itself, the team was defeated even before taking the ice. When the coach of the team comes out and talks about playing people based on merit, AND THEN SITS DJK THE GAME AFTER STICKING UP FOR OUR CAPTAIN AND GETTING HIS A@@ HANDED TO HIM BY ONE OF THE TOUGHEST FIGHTERS IN THE LEAGUE, how does anyone in the locker room take him seriously? Thanks for nothing DJK, go get’em Steckel !?!?

The pp was awful. 0-8 with two 5-3, and the best chance to score was Florida’s 2-1 when Varly made those sick saves. Why wasn’t anyone creating any traffic in front of Vokoun? DOES ANYONE REMEMBER BILLY SMITH WHACKING AWAY AT OUR GUYS’ ANKLES? Where’d that kind of hockey go?

The worst players on the ice? Carlson and Alzner BY FAR!! They were on for 2 of 3 scores against, with Alzner totally schooled by Frolik on the first goal in the dying seconds of the period. Remember Poti’s lack of heart defensively a couple weeks ago? Well sgm3, where was Alzner’s heart then? Alzner looked so God-awful that he made ****55 look good, causing me to almost wish for him. Carlson/Alzner hat ZERO HITS and 2 blocked shots COMBINED. Ahh, the golden chosen ones….

The good news? WELCOME BACK FROM EXILE JOHNNY E!! Hard-nosed, steady/responsible defensive play all game; he also made two nice pinches, one getting a shot (looked like a bull in a china shop, loved it) and the other starting the Caps most dominant shift of the 2nd pd. THE FINAL GAME STATS IN HITS/BLOCKED SHOTS? Erskine 7 hits, 3 blocked shots….the rest of the entire backline combined? 8 hits, 8 blocked shots…not bad money’s worth for THE LOWEST DMAN ON BB’S PECKING POLE.

I can just hear BB yelling now, “Hurry up and get well, ****55…..Erskine is producing as usual and I need you to play you w/Green, and Alzner has to play w/Carlson, and Poti has to play w/Hannan because we traded for him and he has to be in the lineup. That’s just the way it is. But stay sharp Ersk and DJK, and be ready when I think a team will try to bully us.”

BB MUST GO!!!

It really doesn't matter if you are a bandwagoner, goat's blood drinker, Kool aid drinker, or season ticket holder for 35 years. The Caps just did not play well at all tonight and have been spiraling in this direction for a couple of weeks. I hope it is a slump and come out of it soon. Hpwever, those of us who go to many games and have done so for awhile are getting a bad feeling about things.

Just a thought, not a sermon.

P.S. BigGameSid and Slurpeesarecool: you remind me of some parents I know that like to point out how great their children are doing in school or sports when you reveal how your child is struggling in one or the other, just to make you feel even worse. You really are bad people.

Why Dineen? I loved him as a player. He is an AHL coach in Potland. Interesting choice over two Cup winning coaches. Why? Regardless they should give BB the whole year unless The Capitals go on a 14 game losing streak.

And for all the people saying these are meaningless games in December....please wake up. This team is playing like complete crap and their not just going to flip a switch and be the best team in the NHL. They show absolutely no and NO HEART. How about you throw a couple checks or get into a fight when your getting embarrassed by the worst team in your division. BB is hypocritical ASS. Start by benching Ovi until he decides to start earning his check. These guys are soft just like the coach.

spot on except getting rid of BB. Did you actually almost give Schultz a compliment? Carlson and Alzner lying down while all of the forwards for Flordia standing up. Not their best game but remember they are kids at this point. We can cut them a little slack. Erskine also made I believe two nice shots as well. There is one area that you are correct is the physical or lack of physical play by the Caps.

Posted by: pkme | December 9, 2010 11:31 PM | Report abuse

I know I said I was gone for tonight but after reading all this negativity about BB I felt I should do a little research that others seem to not want to do. I am not saying he is the best but think about this when raking him. He has the best winning % in Caps history. I can hear what all of you are thinking the playoffs are all that matters. OK then think about this. Only 6 Caps coaches have made the playoffs so he should be in the top 6 by that standard. Bruce Cassidy was 2-4 so he should be 6th. Jim Schoenfeld was 10-14 (41.7%) better but still 5th best for the Caps. Who's next? Bryan Murray with a record of 24-29 (45.3%), then brother Terry at 18-21 (46.2%). Second all time is Bruce at 13-15 (46.4%) not far behind Wilson who was 15-17 (46.9%). So yes, Wilson had the one run to the finals but after that he never won another playoff series winning a total of 3 playoff games including a 4-1 loss as the 2 seed to Pittsburgh in 2000 and a 4-2 series loss as the 3 seed to Pittsburgh again. Terry Murray took over a team that was a playoff team and took them to the ECF his first year where they got swept then was worse every year after going to the second round his second year and then back to back first round exits before missing the playoffs his last year. His brother Bryan had strong regular season teams but never got past the second round. So if you are looking at just one season it would be Wilson, Terry, Boudreau, and Bryan and if you go with straight winning % in the playoffs it is Wilson, Boudreau, Terry and Bryan. So I am not sure how Boudreau gets ranks 4th. I would put him in a tie for 2nd right now slightly behind Wilson and tied with Terry Murray. The difference is that Boudreau still has time to change his ranking while the others are all gone.

I hope he benches two of the top six guys based on merit. By the way, I can't wait to see this on 24/7 :(

@festus

lol - I was thinking the same thing: we trade Flash and we lose three in a row!

Ovie is not himself - I don't believe the guy is partying his ass off during the season, but perhaps arbytus will know better than I do. Still, he's just not the same guy. One wonders if there isn't a hidden injury.

He and Crosby have been the best two players in the game these past four years. Suddenly, Crosby has leapt past him. One can hope that his competitive fire will get ignited by this...

As for the Caps. We all can see there is a huge hole at center. No one's fault. We'll need to stay in reasonably shape until the deadline and I'm sure a deal will happen then. The irony is that the good drafting has put the caps in a kind of awkward position. They can't offer a centerman a long term deal because they have too many top prospects at that position. The casualty of that is this season, so far.

@pkme

Dineen has serious hockey coaching pedigree. By all accounts a great / adaptive coach - not one dimensional like BB or John Anderson. He is 600+ with the pathetic Sabres talent. He will be a GREAT NHL coach...his time is coming with Arniel and Boucher spoken for. He could be the AHL coach we should have had and did not have with Boudreau.

AND -- I have saying this since Day #1 of the season: SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH OVECHKIN!! That little Ovechkin - Crosby debate? That debate is so over. Crosby is now in the Gretzky-sphere. My 8 year old son tells last week "She scored again and has more than Stamkos". Well I trained him well...but Ovechkin's name cannot be in the same conversation as Crosby anymore, irrespective of points/standings. It is no contest. One guy works his ass off over the summer to broaden his game. The other makes a freaking DVD proclaiming him the GREAT and partying on boats and cars (we have seen the pics). Anyone notice how often he can't control the puck...it hops off his stick...or he fires and it is a whiff...how many times did that happend before?? I really think something has materially changed with him. AND -- all this talk of him becoming a playmaker...except for that great set-up to Semin, and the EN pass to Backstrom, all his assists are secondaries for the most part. I just hope he does not do a Cheechoo on us!!!

I can be swayed but not a one of those teams had the supposed depth of this team. Those Caps teams were much more physical. I also said we should let BB finish the season and if the Caps lose in the first round again then he would have to go. Not one person on this board knows more than BB about hockey and coaching. He is the boss and the buck stops with him.

Dineen is interesting. I like his penalty minutes as a player. Strangely he would be the kind of player the Caps need but at Center. And he could score goals for real and playmake. As a coach I see he has a fantastic record.

"If the power play isn't working, then change it. Move Ovechkin off the point, do something."

YESSSS!!!! Best post on here today!

Here is the reality check on BB and the Caps:

No overreaction on losing to 3 rotten team. Answer this honestly: How many thought we were winning well? Except for that shutout in Carolina, and the game in St. Louis -- the Caps have not played a 60 minute game this season.

So -- would you rather squeak out the the last 3 games as wins and close your eyes and bask in the 21-6-2 record, OR face the reality: to (fully) quote RJ Umberger (boy - what a solid assessment in hindsight): “They play the wrong way. They want to be moving all the time. They float around in their zone, looking for breakaways and odd-man rushes. A good defensive team is going to beat them (in the playoffs). If you eliminate your turnovers and keep them off the power play, they’re going to get frustrated because they’re in their zone a lot.”

DJK doesn't know how to skate, enough. case closed! He got his ass beaten,as usual, and Ovie is trying his best to show that he is a captain of this team and supports other players, lame move in my opinion. Please don't mention DJK ever again, he is worthless

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | December 9, 2010 11:21 PM | Report abuse

the nhl isn't figure skating, and he's an infinitely better skater than Huggybear ever was....you obviously no nothing about him, only what BB has denied you from seeing...fighting and intimidation is just as important as "long reach", "positional play," "good first pass", "good speed", etc...ONLY A TOOL WOULDN'T WANT HIM IN THE LINEUP AGAINST THE PENS, but he can't play the mighty Panthers?

beforeitstoolate, it's passed you by already....

Vermon

Where is the angry hockey we were promised by Ted? Maybe they need to go GNC and get some muscle builder.

Slurpeesarecool: you remind me of some parents I know that like to point out how great their children are doing in school or sports when you reveal how your child is struggling in one or the other, just to make you feel even worse. You really are bad people.

At least my Canadiens know something about playing as a damn team. Wusses like you are why I left the Caps fanbase. An embarrassment to those who have a brain and don't buy into their own fluffed up mythos.

How many times have a Canadian based team won a Cup in twenty years. Just an educated guess but most CUP winners rgardless had Americans, Fins, Slovaks, Czek, Russians, Swedes and of course Canadians. It is more diverse than the eighties.

Posted by: pkme | December 10, 2010 1:27 AM | Report abuse

Interesting little fact.

Red Wings have over 16 non Canadians playing for them on their current roster.

Penquins have 17 Canadians playing on there roster.

Capitals have 14 players from Canada on their roster. How is this not a majority.

Blackhawks have 15 Canadians on their roster.

Look at the Red Wing teams that won Cups in 2000s and they were highly diverse. Lots of Europeons and Americans

Posted by: pkme | December 10, 2010 2:03 AM | Report abuse

The Canadians have ten non Canadians on their team.

BB thoughts:

- Said ALL the star players were lousy last night (everyone else is out of step?)

- Line and position changes (strategy or desperation?)

- Misuse of star power? (think Ovechkin-Semin vs. Crosby-Malkin)

- Set plays? - Recovery from slumps comes from doing what you do best - not by trying something different

- Discipline? - not just practices, but how players are to play

- Repetition without follow through (How many times will we hear about the need to take a beating in front of the net to make dirty goals - and then watch the other team do it better than us?)

- After a missed shot, Craig Laughlin said he used to shoot glove high BUT (rare comment by Locker) BB believes in just shooting at net. (...and who succeeded at playing NHL?)

All-in-all, very disappointing. Hoped last year's playoff fiasco and McPhee's wise mix of experience and star power would produce mature Caps team. Now, it's getting embarrassing to watch (I'm in California now, so can only imagine what attending fans are feeling - boos understandable).

And yet to come: The Pens and HBO 24/7's inside look.

Here's hoping for a Winter Classic miracle on ice...
