Semyon Varlamov first goaltender off the ice

By Katie Carrera

The every-other-game rotation between goaltenders for the Capitals appears set to continue as Semyon Varlamov was the first netminder off the ice this morning, meaning he will likely get the start against the Florida Panthers tonight. Varlamov is 4-1 since returning from a groin injury and has stopped 140 of the 148 shots he has faced during that span.

Based on the scratches skate it looks like Matt Bradley and D.J. King will be the odd forwards out for the Capitals, meaning the top-two lines should be the same as Monday's tilt against Toronto. Eric Fehr, who was a healthy scratch against the Maple Leafs, will be back in the mix on a line with Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera.

Also, Matt Hendricks told me he is good to go despite needing to leave practice early yesterday because of a bruise from blocking a shot.

More to come in a bit.

All anyone needs to know about BB's FAVORITISM and inability to cultivateTEAM SPIRIT is on display w/tonight's lineup. How in the world can BB not give DJK the VERY NEXT GAME AFTER HE STOOD UP FOR OUR CAPTAIN AND GOT HIS A@@ HANDED TO HIM BY ONE THE TOUGHEST FIGHTERS IN THE LEAGUE???
Yes, capsfans, the caste system is firmly entrenched.....

I'm going to repost something from last night that i think is very relevant to this matter....i'll be back

I like giving Bradley a rest. He doesn't need to play 82 games and giving him, and his bruised body, a night off here and there is a good thing.

@vermontcaps

completely agree

I would give hendricks a rest if he had to leave practice early and get DJK into some kind of game routine

we ARE all LOOKING forward TO your RETURN

Watching the Penguins play now, BOY ARE WE IN HUGE TROUBLE!! Aside from their 10-game winning strack and the jackwagon having twice as many goals, and more assists and fights, than our captain, THEY'VE ASSEMBLED ONE MEAN TEAM: Godard, Engelland, Rupp, Asham, Orpic, Adams, Cooke, Talbot, Lovejoy. THEY'RE TIED FOR LEAGUE LEAD IN FIGHTS!

Us? Fans here bemoan the fact Erskine is in the line-up, think DJK is a bust and shouldn't lace them up...why the effen not? Are they too beneath the chosen ones?? Too many here revere the likes of Chimera, Bradley, Hendricks (sorry, no offense but..). The three have been invisible (as many more) and why is that?

Topping it off, many here seem to think the balance of the season hinges on ****55's return...UNBELIEVABLE!! This is all on BB, and though it might not bother some of you, IT'LL SURE BOTHER ME SEEING THE PENS BEAT US AND PUSH US ALL OVER THE ICE! (I'll leave Philly and Boston out for now)

And to think people were so worried about the prospects of facing ATLANTA....

WOW!! Orr wanted retribution for when Engelland tko-d him last time...what a fight, Engelland wins again! ARE WE READY, CAPS FANS??

instead of playing Ersk and DJK regularly and letting them feel like an important/integral part of the team, BB has decided that they're only good against tough teams. We're a SOFT/PASSIVE TEAM THAT PRETENDS TO BE TOUGH ONLY WHEN BB THROWS ERSK AND DJK TO THE WOLVES.

we need to compete in all aspects of the game, and no way we can hang w/the Pens.....BB MUST GO BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!

I am proud of you. You actually did a post without mentioning Scultz. Congtrats.

Congrats. you actually did a post without mentioning Scultz. Was that hard for you?

@vermontcaps Wow. Would your username be better as "VermontALLCaps"? Think you're shouting enough there?

We get that you don't like Coach.

We get that you don't like Schultz.

We get that you think the Caps should return to 1970s style hockey.

Get over it and start looking at what this team CAN do and do well.

but to be fair - he did say he was going to re-post and would be back. the repost does contain:
"many here seem to think the balance of the season hinges on ****55's return"
so while he may not have typed it - he was thinking of it.

@vermontcaps

I tend to agree with everything you've said in the above post. I'll give BB until the halfway point to get this team together, but that's it.

Since GOONS don't tend to play in the PLAYOFFS, and FIGHTS are a lot rarer, I am not sure the advantage of playing DJ MORE often NOW. Wait a minute, do you happen to be his AGENT?

does this mean that if things haven't changed at the halfway point - you'll type in all caps too? :D

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 9, 2010 11:42 AM | Report abuse

No, he had ****55 in the copy/paste.

We need to invent a new category for vermontcaps. He definitely displays indications of goat's blood consumption, but his pleading style for BB to toss aside favorites and insert instead those v-caps deems worthy is reminiscent of the southern blues that came out of the 50s.

It's almost as if Willie Dixon wrote those posts, the lyrics, and vermontcaps changed the words to take out "she done me wrong" to "BB done Erskine wrong" and things like "there's a red house over yonder and that's where my baby stays" to "there's BB's doghouse over yonder and that's where my Johnny stays."

Next up if anyone's interested I can translate Led Zeppelin's "Lemon Song" to how vermontcaps would do it.

:)

it does appear that BB has his favorites

****55 = dork55 = schultz - it's all the same

52 is definitely a BB golden boy

vermont may not be far off. would you donks argue that the Pens are a 70's style team?? they have brutes and finesse.

Posted by: doughless | December 9, 2010 12:03 PM | Report abuse

Two years ago, we were flying high, Erskine was a regular, players played for each other and BB and we pushed the Pens to game #7 in round 2 (I won't mention how Erskine doctor-shopped to get clearance to finish the season, then played courageously on a broken foot and was our best dman in the playoffs.) How was Ersk rewarded for his INSPIRATIONAL play and leading by quiet example? Last year, the chosen ones started to arrive, Corvo came on board and the team banished Ersk to the press box (AND NO, HE WASN'T TERRIBLE LAST YEAR! I SCREAMED FOR HIS PRESENCE EVERY GAME HE WASN'T IN, some of you might remember.) We know what happened last spring, and THE EXACT SAME SCENARIO IS PLAYING OUT BEFORE OUR EYES, only now the chosen ones have been w/us since the start of the year.

It's hard to get pumped up about tonight's game seeing DJK dissed in a big way (i'm sure BB is waiting until we play the Pens...now do people see why DJK has not looked good? Jeezum, the Pens were playing Godard w/Crosby last night on occasion and DJK is a chump to BB)

go caps, i'll be keeping my fingers crossed!

Haha @tominsocal, I don't think anyone needs to hear about "the juice running down DJK's leg"!!!!!

Posted by: eorr | December 9, 2010 12:15 PM | Report abuse

I really don't think you can blame ANY of the players for what is happening this year. Yes, it appears BB tried to input a new defensive scheme but it is not being executed because some of these guys need discipline which BB apparently can not or will not provide. Like I said yesterday either bring in a grizzled vet who will call these players out and hold them accountable for their actions on the ice or fire an assistant and bring in a guy that will crack the whip.

Even that strategy will only go so far though, BB has got to make an example of one of the stars by sitting their butts if they do not do as they are instructed. It really would not hurt to see Ovie/Backs/Semin/Green get sat in the pressbox for a game to make a point to the rest of the team that if you underperform/freelance your but will sit no matter who you are.

what is happening this year?
we're near the top of the league in most statistical categories (and POINTS...as in playoffs)
we just lost our best defensive defenseman
and we're awesome...

i THANK the players and boudreau

as sgm3 and some others love to say: check the stats. i assume you are just punching vermont's buttons.

cotelloer,

Man, that must be some seriously spiked koolaid you are drinking there, all I can say is WOW!

Posted by: PhilR | December 9, 2010 12:22 PM | Report abuse

@PhilR

I agree some of making the players more disciplined falls on BB. But at the same time some players will never play with the discipline required. So no one really knows which one of those things it is, but its obviously one of them.

Posted by: lylewimbledon | December 9, 2010 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Listen,
theyre (leonsis, gmgm, boudreau) putting a product out every season for the past few years (and for the next 7-8, at least) that I will go out of my way to watch and love and totally spend reckless amounts of money on (car/house/student loan payments be darned!) and theyll break through one of these times...is it this year? no reason why not off the top of my head...

in any case, having a team i WANT to watch that is run well in this area (as opposed to skins, soon-not-to-be-named-wiz, and nats) is just so awesome i could never begin to complain about them
