Four Hours and Counting

Bonjour from Montreal, Caps fans. I just arrived a little while ago and went straight into a Professional Hockey Writers' Association meeting at the media hotel. So I'm playing catch up at the moment.

Anyway, I just wanted to post a quick note letting everyone know that I'll be at Bell Centre tonight and will be blogging all the Caps' news that goes down, live from draft floor. I hope to be up and running around 6 or so, soon after a quick chat with Bruce Boudreau.

Pronger trade talks are heating up at this moment. Everyone ready for the 2 significant trades we will make tonight..

So, what's your prediction, Tarik? Will the Caps pull off some moves tonight?

Unless we get Pronger for cheap, he's on the tail end of his career and I'd hate to give up the farm for him. They wanted Carlson, Alzner and a 1st over the trade deadline. If they dropped the request to just Alzner and a 1st then it may be worth it.

The trade I'd love to see would involve Semin. He's someone we could get a lot back for. A quality young center and either a rugged RW or young rugged defenseman. It would mean a revamping of our 2nd line (but thats ok) and it elevate Flash's importance to this team.

as much as i love semin, i think you're right that he would make great trade bait. there are tons of teams out there that, unlike us, lack scorers. we have plenty of firepower even without semin, so we might be able to put the final touches on a great caps team with a big trade for some grit on the blue line or up front

Any team trading for Semin has to make sure there are other Russians on it. Otherwise he will be heading to the KHL after this year. So GM's have to be careful about dealing for him.

I'd be really shocked if Semin goes anywhere. And you're a donk if you'd trade a 1st round and Alzner for Pronger. That's a big chunk of our future.

Why trade our future defensive corp(s) for a one year rental? Doesn't make any sense...But they can have Schultz though

Posted by: RITdude | June 26, 2009 3:41 PM | Report abuse

tell them thiazzi! most defencemen dont mature till they are 25 or 26 years old.

Please - we're not talking about trading a top 5 or top 10 pick. We're talking about a late 1st round pick in a draft which isn't that deep. Trading our #24 pick is like trading a 2nd rounder in a good draft.
So trading the 1st shouldn't be a big deal to a team already stockpiled with prospects. This is exactly when you would want to trade picks.

Regarding Alzner - he's not Carlson. And frankly, in 2 yrs maybe Josh Godfrey passes Alzner. So you have to give something up for Pronger. If you can deal Alzner (who by no means is in the same category as a Luke Schenn prospect), I say deal him. Carlson is a better prospect than Alzner, and he slipped to the bottom of the 1st round last year. If Alzner entered the draft last season, he couldve slipped down to late 1st round or even 2nd round. We just happened to get him in a poor draft year for defensemen, and a poor draft year in general.

#24 pick is worthless/Carlson is a better prospect (picked #27)

Posted by: thiazzi | June 26, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

I can't see Semin going anywhere, he's young and gifted, & will get even better.

Posted by: Max231 | June 26, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

he's not contradicting himself. Last year's draft depth much better than this years and the year Alzner was drafted. That is his point. Carlson is the better of the two, eventhough i know most of you love Alzner. If we can get Pronger using him as bait its worth it in my opinion.

They need a 2nd line Center as well so Nylander could be thrown in there. Salaries than match, they get two players they need and we get what we need.

Posted by: ThePat | June 26, 2009 4:01 PM | Report abuse

I'd rather have Alzner for 15 years over Pronger for 2ish.

Posted by: thiazzi | June 26, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

I'm all for Pronger...if they take Nylnader or Theodore and some other D man other than Alzner, Green or Carlson. I would trade them Fleischman and a pick for Pronger.

I think Flash has topped out and isn't going to be more than a 15 to 20 goal scorer. He disappeared after January and in the playoffs. How long are we gonna wait on this guy? We got young guys that play better then he does.

Anaheim wants to trade Giguere to free up some sal cap space if the caps send nylander theodore and schultz both teams could afford it. anaheim likes big defensemen and they could probably trade pronger to toronto for kaberle and alexei ponikerovsky

"Anaheim wants to trade Giguere to free up some sal cap space if the caps send nylander theodore and schultz both teams could afford it."

Giguire's cap hit is $6M. Theo + Nylander is $9.375M. Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

I don't think Semin would play anywhere else (but maybe New York or Chicago). Keep him, sign him, we can find a supporting cast. No teams can be all that good with the cap in any event. Maybe we can make a play for Hudler. Would like Mikko Koivu or Jokinen, also.

It makes no sense to trade for anyone old - the season is too long. Wait until March to get someone like that, when you know who's healthy and who's still got legs, etc.

Our best trade chip is Neuvirth. Package him with a pick for Savard. Sign Knuble, dump Theo and Nyls for a ham sandwich and improve the D at the deadline.
