Game 1: Capitals 3, Penguins 2

Rookie goaltender Simeon Varlamov rebounded from allowing a soft tying goal to making a highlight reel-worthy stick save, Tomas Fleischmann scored in the third period and the Capitals hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Verizon Center.

Alex Ovechkin and Dave Steckel also tallied for the Caps, and Nicklas Backstrom added two assists for a total of nine in the postseason.

We'll have more in a bit, so stay tuned.

Update: Check out a video of Varly's save below:

I'm stuck at a conference (and sneaking peaks at Caps Insider!), how was the broadcast?

Posted by: RedBirdie | May 2, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

Nice job today Erskine. All over Sid and Malkin

Posted by: bigschu8 | May 2, 2009 3:43 PM | Report abuse

broadcast? fair i guess. typical nbc

Posted by: NFeKPo | May 2, 2009 3:43 PM | Report abuse

Awesome game. I'll put it on Varlys shoulders. The pitts had better opportunities at the net.

Posted by: thusler | May 2, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

No matter what happens the rest of the playoffs, and I am optimistic, the fact that the Caps have found a young, improving, and very good starting goalie is the biggest story for this team. Nice work Varly!

Posted by: RepoMan1 | May 2, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

I will be honest. I was a bit afraid of Varlamov. The Rags did not really test him as good as a high-powered Pens offense is. Minus the second goal, which is excusable because even Kings give up weak goals (see second Bradley goal), he played an absolutely mind-blowing game.

Varlamov for President.

VARLY'S BETTER.

...and I couldn't watch it on TV because I am at work :-(

I agree about Erskine...he has been nothing short of phenomenal in the playoffs...he is such a hard worker; also, calm and damn effective. I wish he would get more recognition. Keep doing it, Erskine!

Posted by: gocaps2009 | May 2, 2009 3:48 PM | Report abuse

And also props to MAF. He played an outstanding game as well.

Forget about the name Cardiac Caps...how about Giveaway Caps.... 22-6?

As in last series' Game 7 they were lucky...very lucky...Varly 's high lite reel save was awesome.

Third line is working great!

Go Caps!

Pens fan:

"They just lost to a minor league goalie."

Dang! What a good minor league goalie he is!!

Posted by: rachel216 | May 2, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

Wasn't happy with everything I saw, but I'm sure happy with the final score :D

The NBC guys are right, as much as I hate to say it - the D needs to spend more time playing D and less time jumping into the play. It might have been okay against an offensively inept team like the Rags, but it's causing far too many odd-man breaks for the Pens.

Enough of that though. We've got a win to celebrate! GO CAPS!!! WOOOO!!!!!!!

Another game the Caps didn't deserve to win. The Penguins are taking Game 2 and taking this series in 6.

Posted by: SC87 | May 2, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Now, it is Crosby.

I gotta say, both Crosby and Ovie lived up to the hype. Tons of chances, posts, and a goal each.

Posted by: richmondphil | May 2, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Crosby is LOL. He just told two big lies.

Posted by: richmondphil | May 2, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

Another game the Caps didn't deserve to win. The Penguins are taking Game 2 and taking this series in 6.

Posted by: SC87

Hahahahhaha! And in what way did the Pens deserve that win? Hahahahaha, loser!!

Posted by: rachel216 | May 2, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin didn't live up to any hype. He gave the puck away which led to the Pens second goal. I could've scored his goal.

Posted by: SC87 | May 2, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Crosby was definetely trying to play down the save. Called it a "desperation save" and that he has had better stops on him before tons of time. He also said he didn't pre-celebrate, but the video does not lie Sidney.

Posted by: richmondphil | May 2, 2009 4:00 PM | Report abuse

@ SC87
That is what the good teams do. Even when they dont play at their best, they still find a way to win. If the Pens cant beat the Caps in a game like today, how can they win when the Caps play like they can?

Posted by: zosodave | May 2, 2009 4:04 PM | Report abuse

SC87: I get the feeling you're bitter. It's okay. Don't be jealous that Varly stymied your team.

What are you talking about? Ovie got a goal, rang a post, and Malkin? Did they leave him in Pittsburgh? Yeah, I think they forgot to bring him. SC87, how could your hero miss that WIDE open net that Varly made a good save on?? I would've lifted the puck and scored there easily.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 2, 2009 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SC87 | May 2, 2009 4:05 PM | Report abuse

That save is all luck. Crosby didn't shoot it hard enough and Varlamov was lucky to save that. Goalies make these saves all the time.

Posted by: SC87 | May 2, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Maybe 5, 6, or 7. Anybody's guess but I think the Caps will win. Even with Varly's softy [which may have been deflected], the Caps still found a way to get it done today.

Posted by: bigschu8 | May 2, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Funny nobody talks about that terrible rebound control on David steckel's goal. Why would we need to talk about Varly's softie? He obviously made enough dazzling saves to make us forget about us.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 2, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

is Crosby seriously trying to claim he wasn't celebrating? (granted, he probably had good reason to think he got that goal, but Varly ROBBED him. awesomeness)

Red Army prevails :)

Posted by: RedBirdie | May 2, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

The best thing out of this game for Varlamov is that he yielded a terrible goal, but came up huge after that, and the team got another goal for him. The Caps' team resiliency meter is at an all time high. Good things will come!

SC87: Well than you really are an idiot. You're name is Sidney Crosby 87, you come here after the Pens lost saying the Caps don't deserve to win. Are you stanleycup1907? lol.

That save is all luck. Crosby didn't shoot it hard enough and Varlamov was lucky to save that. Goalies make these saves all the time.

Posted by: SC87

Yup, it was all luck. ALL LUCK.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 2, 2009 4:10 PM | Report abuse

I still think it was deflected. Either way, Varly bounced back with a few huge saves after that. How many goalies would be able to forget about a soft goal and then shut the door the rest of the way. This kid is playing years beyond his age.

Tell me VTD what does that have to do with the Caps win today?

Posted by: akus2 | May 2, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

Great team effort. The Caps overcame the early jitters and got another excellent performance by Varlamov. (He really made up for that softie, didn't he?)

I was also impressed with the play of Steckel and friends on the penalty kill. That unit managed to kill off 5 power plays against Pittsburgh's juggernaut.

Pittsburgh really brought it today. They easily showed they were faster and more skilled than the Rangers--and that's an understatement.

Washington also did a lot of things well today. They received balanced scoring and made some excellent defensive plays when needed. Varlamov was the real difference maker.

Now, I'm going to play house inspector. I would like to see the Caps do a better job on face-offs. (Steckel did excel at that task.) I would also like to see them make better decisions in the neutral zone. There were too many giveaways.

If the Caps can continue to play at this level--and improve in the areas I described--I believe they can win this series.

In this series, it won't be a matter of who scores first; it'll be a matter of who scores last!

Posted by: rachel216 | May 2, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Varly gave up a softy, but he's 21 years old and he stole a goal from a "hokcey God" Crosby and that along makes all trolls like SC go nuts. He is the first star of the game.

Varly 1st star of the game.
Crosby 3rd? WTF? There were people on Pens team deserving it more. Crosby didn't score the best opportunity of the night and got 3rd star...

Posted by: Hazz | May 2, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Varly made a great save, but he is not the ONLY goalie to ever make one.

Unless some people are new to hockey........then in that case i understand.

Posted by: akus2 | May 2, 2009 4:42 PM | Report abuse

From Rotoworld.com

Simeon Varlamov stopped 34 of 36 shots in a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday.

It was Varlamov's first career game against the offensively gifted Pittsburgh Penguins and it came in the second round of the playoffs, but Varlamov still held his own. The rookie goaltender continues to impress with a 1.29 GAA and .950 save percentage in seven playoff starts. This series is being billed as Alexander Ovechkin versus Sidney Crosby, but it may prove to be Varlamov that's the difference.

Posted by: bigschu8 | May 2, 2009 4:43 PM | Report abuse

That save was retarded.

Posted by: richmondphil | May 2, 2009 4:44 PM | Report abuse

OK. I think we all understand what you're saying. But why don't you give some credit to Varlamov for the save? Instead, you're cutting it down and attempting to make it look pedestrian, which, in turn, makes you look like a hockey neophyte at worst and a whiner at best.

In defense of Rachel, it really doesn't matter how long you've been a fan for, what truly matters is your passion, your dedication and your understanding of the team and the game. With that said, often times those traits are honed over time

Thoughts from the game...what was up with the refs? Was it as bad on TV as it was live? I suppose I'm not mad at the calls against us but they weren't calling it even. Feds interference in the first came less than a minute or so after Bradley had to deal with a moving pick of about 4 seconds while trying to forecheck. I thought the call on Erskine late was mostly inadvertent contact and more of a dive as well but it was on the far side of the ice so I'll let it go.

Varly's save was tremendous, no it's not the only time it's ever been done, but probably the best of THIS playoff year so far. I'll trade that one for the soft one he let in, even up.

Flash played a heck of a lot better today, the goal besides. Semin and Backstrom did their thing today, combining to set up 2 pretty goals with 2 helper each. Great work by that duo. Semin's slap pass to Ovie for his goal was just sick, Fleury bit on it hard and so did all of us. Incredible hands.

We cannot give Crosby that much space though, his goal was a great shot, just cannot give a guy of his talents that much open space to get that shot off. We also allowed too many odd man rushes, but besides those few instances the D men played very solid.

Did have some obnoxious Pitt fans behind me heading down to the Metro telling me we were lucky because we were outshot by 10. I pointed out it would've been great if we had 7 more minutes of PP time like they had to which they had no real answer. It was a great game, pretty even for the most part, we had the secondary players show up. The Steckel/Bradley/Laich line continues to be extremely good. If they can be a consistent threat to score a couple goals for us it will be huge going forward.

I expect Game 2 to be just as close. Crosby had a great game I thought Malkin made some good plays but he wasn't doing much out there, credit Erskine for actually taking the body a few times on both their guns.

I asked when she started watching hockey because of the comment that no other goalie has made a save like that.

Anyone remember Nabokov save last year against Dallas?

It happens.

Posted by: akus2 | May 2, 2009 4:42 PM |

And no one has made a save like that in this year's playoffs

By the way a good decision by BB not to stick with Schultz. Even if he gets healthy. The defense is looking strong when Jeffry Schultz got his "pride hurt" injury :) Maybe he is going to improve in the future, but today he should be scratched.

Hey Rachel, I've been watching hockey for over 20 years but have only been a Caps fan for 2 years. So you have that over me. Did I jump on the Bandwagon? Maybe

I was a Winnipeg Jets fan for many years and it took me over 10 years to find a team to cheer for. Go Caps

Dave for President.

VARLY'S BETTER.

No transition to the Yotes?

GOOD JOB VARLY! AWESOME SAVE AGAINST CROSBY. THAT KEPT US IN THE GAME. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. BUT OF COURSE, CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WHOLE TEAM. THANK YOU FOR A FANTASTIC GAME AND GREAT WIN. GO CAPS!!!

yeah for the first season when we got all the radio broadcasts [Curt Keilback]from Phx. But not the same when you can't go to the games.

I think we've had this conversation before.

Exciting game. Go Caps!!

Penguins outplayed the Caps but they lost, and it is all that counts.

I love the Caps, I want them to win it all, but we are in for a tough series. The Penguins are a formidable team with some great players.

Best line for the Caps had to be the Steckel, Laich, Bradley.

Crosby is one hell of a player.

Varly probably wish he had one of those goals back, but he was outstanding in goal and actually saved the win.

Juice and Erskine have been playing very good defense.

PK was great.

Caps had too many give-aways, need to be more disciplined.

Thanks, Davethecapsfan, for some good comments on the game. I, too, thought the refs were uneven, but maybe I was prejudiced b/c I am a Caps fan.

Matt Bradley is such a quiet hero. Steckel did a great job today too. Backstrom and Semin just keep working it and getting it done, as well as the D---Erskine has been a stand out in terms of stepping up his game. Love Ovie's sense of humor being interviewed after the game, and Green had good comments too. Crosby downplayed the Caps talent as much as he could, although maybe he was telling the truth when he said he only looked like he was celebrating because he wanted to make sure they reviewed the "save". Yeah, right, nice try, Cindy.

Good win, even if we didn't play up to our potential. Varly save was one of the most incredible saves I've ever seen. That one is up there with Felix Potvin diving glove save back in the day.

Guys: Varly's win today has huge implications for us. It is one more iindication that we've got our number one goaltender, and with that missing piece in place we will go FAR...

Varly's first test, after his first NHL game, was: could he do it a second time? He passed this with flying colors.

The second test was: can he play playoff hockey? He got us to round 2.

The next test was: can he play against a team that is an offensive powerhouse and has two of the top players in the league? We got our answer today.

There are more tests ahead but it is looking like we have the makings of a great goalie on our team and look how far the best teams have gone with stellar goaltending.

Today the kid beat the veteran. No question about it. And "solving" Varly was key in Pens' strategy.

How big of a missing piece do you think goaltending was or would have been for us?

I forgot to give Juice some props too. He has been exceptional in the playoffs both in taking the body and with an active stick making some key poke checks at big times for us. I'm not going to sit here and say we have one of the best defensive units left in the playoffs, but we're a lot more solid than even I thought we would be. The ONLY issue is to stop giving up odd man rushes by pinching too much near center ice. Got caught too many times today.

Going forward though, Erskine and Jurcina have earned my respect and locked up 2 of the 6 roster spots on D along with Greenie obviously. Those 2 have stepped it up big time in the playoffs.

Not to put too much emphasis on it but we've won 4 in a row now too. Varly is holding up, I'm not quite at the point where I'm ready to say "this kid is the real deal" going forward...but I'm getting very close.

Me for Pres? I'd hate that job.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | May 2, 2009 5:29 PM | Report abuse

Pens were flying that 1st period and had me nervous. Battling back and turning aside so many powerplays, and taking the W for the 4th straight game has got to be a boost for our boys. It wasn't always pretty, but what can you say... the Pens brought a good game. On to game 2. Keep it up and let's go up on them by 2. How about Stecks, eh? And have any of you seen the playoffs stats? Not to put too much emphasis on just one aspect of the game, but it's great to see our boy, Semin taking the points lead from Malkin, and seeing Varly kicking butt in net.

Posted by: gonchpup | May 2, 2009 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and I almost forgot... our quiet Swede leading in assists.

Posted by: gonchpup | May 2, 2009 5:33 PM | Report abuse

Good win! But I can tell you one thing. The overall best in Washington was... GRIN! He shut out Malkin totally! He won all 1 on 1. He made smart passes starting attacks. I can tell you, he is just the best in our team.

And Varlamov also.

I'm back folks, but now as an impartial observer since the two teams in this series have knocked out my team in successive years, I have absolutely no rooting interest.

I did an experiment today, which was watching the game on NBC, without a rooting interest to see if there was any bias. Now I did this because I have always believed that NBC was biased against the Rangers because they have no real young, marketable players and always seem to be on NBC against the Pens, Flyers or Caps, who do. Anyway, my unbiased conclusion, was no bias shown by NBC. I know that idea may ruffle some feathers but the truth is that the only one who I could accuse of any real bias was McGuire (who I hate), who seemed to love every single thing about the Penguins all game (and even said "we need some fresh bodies on the ice" in the middle of Pittsburgh power play, something I found very irritating. I was disappointed that the announcers missed pretty apparent penalties on both sides, preferring to yammer it up about things I have no interest in. It doesn't mean the broadcast didn't suck, but it sucked pretty evenly.

Hello All!
Just got back. F Street was rockin', very cool!
The fact that the team has confidence in Varly even after the second goal speaks volumes. We did not go into any shell and kept on pressing hard. Don't know if I could have said that with Theo.

Anyway, great win and hope this propels us to the mountain top!

Sens fan??? Oh no, now I'm bummin'. There is nothing I could possibly say that would hurt his feelings, other than maybe season '06-'07. Yikes.

I dont understand what that has to do with todays game?

You won the game and you bring that up??

lol

Posted by: akus2

It's entirely relevant, dolt. Your crappy fans like to say Caps fans are bandwagoners, when the FACT point out that you pittsburgh fans are indeed the bandwagoners. Just like the pirates caps I saw today. That team has stunk for decades and yet now since they are playing .500 in *april* (lmao) you bandwagoners are "proudly" wearing the pirates caps.

You jokers are nothing more than unoriginal and living in the past.

Posted by: Chase4 | May 2, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov's save on Crosby's shot, where the puck had basically beaten him and was about to cross the goal line until he reached back and blocked it with his stick was insanne!!! Just, wow.

Posted by: alchartreux | May 2, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Chase 4, both teams are bandwagoners, but the Caps fans are worse. This "Rock the Red" stuff is not only a ripoff of other teams in the league but it is just lame. Take you siren and shove it.

Come on Caps fans, don't let these Pensyltuckens get you down, their just mad because they lost to a "minor league goalie" hahahaha
