Game 3: Penguins 3, Capitals 2 (OT)

Kris Letang scored 11:23 into overtime to lift the Penguins to a 3-2 victory over the Capitals at Mellon Arena.

Nicklas Backstrom's goal with less than two minutes to go forced an extra period for the Caps, who had managed to hang around despite being badly outshot by Pittsburgh, 42-23, and taking far too many penalties.

Washington's commanding two-games-to-none lead in this Eastern Conference semifinal series has now been cut to one.

We'll have much, much more later, so stay tuned.

Caps stunk it up tonight except for Varlamov, who played like Superman. Shake it off and let's win game 4!

Posted by: ArlingtonHokie | May 6, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Pens have been outplaying the Caps this series so a break was bound to go their way at some point. And it happened tonight. This loss has to shake something up in the Caps or they could lose control of this thing quickly.

Posted by: CDon | May 6, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

I'm PISSED. No, letang did not score, morrisonn did. I wish the Pens beat Varly cleanly, I hate that they won on a deflection, that's so cheap.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 6, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Well, we are the underdogs in this series. We should be down 2-1 instead of up 2-1. Way to go team, keep it up for the next game. Varly you are our next Kolzig. Crosby, still think it's good to be playing the Caps?

See you next game.

Mo is the new Johansson.

Posted by: oo7 | May 6, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Day-ammm It!

No, I have not given up on our team by any stretch of the imagination. They played bad for the most part today

I think it will be --- Caps in 5 games.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 6, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

I'm pretty sure we won't see the same kind of effort (or lack of effort) we did in this game in game 4. If we do, it's going to be tied 2-2.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 6, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Caps lead 2-1 in this thing but have been mostly outplayed by the Pens. I'm still waiting to see them play well and as a team. It's gotta happen soon, or the Pens could start ripping off a few games in a row.

Posted by: CDon | May 6, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Anybody worried yet? Total pathetic performance. Have the Caps played a total all around good game yet, except for game 6 in NY? Morrison and Pothier looked tired. They had no business being in this game, how many more ten bell saves did would Varly have had to make.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | May 6, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

that shot hit the post and went in... Well, except for varly, the caps deserved to lose. They did not forcheck at all and were playing defence almost the entire time..

Posted by: wowkanut | May 6, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

Sorry to say it, but this cutesie puck-posession BS just doesn't cut it against an aggressively forechecking team in the playoffs. It works during the regular season, but giving the puck away about 30 or 40 times during a game is a recipe for disaster. Especially when you give it away numerous times below the hash marks in your own end. When a team sends 3 forecheckers below the circles, you make them pay with outlets, or chips if need be, not circling around below the goal line.

Better wake up.

Posted by: drewsie | May 6, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

I HATE the Pens. While I think the Caps will probably pull out this series, if by some chance they don't, I will root for the team that plays Pitt, whether it's Boston or Carolina.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 6, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

don't rip on Calle, he was a quality defenseman. I would love to have him in his prime this series.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 10:20 PM | Report abuse

I thought Caps in five, but I'm not so sure this thing isn't gonna be tied 2-2 coming home. If the Pens play like they did tonight in game 4, then it will be tied.

We didn't see much of Crosby in this game but a lot of Malkin. Knock both their dicks in the dirt the next game boys.

How did we make MATT COOK look like Wayne Gretzky?

Posted by: lightshow | May 6, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

Rangers got off to a 2-0 lead behind a hot goaltender despite playing poorly.

It sounds so familiar, it's scary.

Malkin played like the Hart finalist he is. Caps didn't have the balanced lines they've boasted for the past seven games.

Posted by: JohninMpls | May 6, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

So the penguins had 14 mins of PP time, refs ignoring their antics, the capitals playing like crap, and it STILL took them nearly 80 minutes to win. GG there is your freebie, caps in 5

Posted by: trunkenmath | May 6, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

Varly is really good at following the puck, so I don't understand why Morrisonn would try to deflect it and change the direction. Pretty good chance that if Mo doesn't touch the puck, Varly's got it. I bet PPs in game 4 will be PIT-8, WSH-3, something like that.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 6, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Caps were pretty much doubled up in shots and played almost the entire game in their own defensive zone. I saw no adjustments or shifts in attitude from period to period. It looked like mentally they weren't into the game. OV couldn't keep the puck on his stick, Backs was weak with it, Semin was absent, D-men couldn't clear the zone. Only Varly played well. I don't know what these guys get as playoff bonuses, but every player on that team should be giving their cut to Varly.

Posted by: CDon | May 6, 2009 10:24 PM | Report abuse

The Pens were lucky to win it. The winning goal was a deflection off one of our players, pretty much unstoppable. Next game, don't let it get to that.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 6, 2009 10:24 PM | Report abuse

No rachel216, if the Caps play like they did tonight, it will be 2-2. Although honestly, our guys seem to play better with their backs against the wall, so bring it on! Caps win on Friday.

Expect PIT to come out with the same effort, it's up to the Caps to see if they will play better. They were really bad in the offensive zone tonight. Green was a non factor once again. Semin needs to step up. So does Viktor... and Nylander, but that's a lot to ask for from Nylander.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 6, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

@JohninMpls

Those were my thoughts, too. This thing is eerily similar to the Rangers series. The team that's been playing better gets in an early 2-0 hole then starts chipping away. There are some not so friendly similarities. Pens are playing much, much better hockey, yet still find themselves down 2-1.

Posted by: CDon | May 6, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Fleischmann is playing scared. I know he has 2 goals but good grief, lets show some courage and start battling for the pucks and skating a little bit harder. He is being knocked off the puck like a 12 year old girl.

Stay positive Caps fans. We are the underdogs remember? We are doing much better than expected already.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 6, 2009 10:26 PM | Report abuse

Caps just have to play smarter and better positionally against Malkin. They can't skate hard at him, then hook him off the puck. They need to try to body him, but it seemed like they were pursuing him too aggressively and then letting him slip by and circle around. Crosby was neutralized and essentially a non-factor. But because of that, it seemed like they took their attention off of Malkin.

Posted by: CDon | May 6, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Bettman's message to the Refs was extend this series as much as you can. We played our butts off, especially Varly, Feds, Brooks, and Steckel.

The loss hurts, but we are on the right side of the Series tilt. The Caps weren't going to shut them out. After all, at this point last series the Caps were down.

Posted by: gtydings | May 6, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Caps didn't play bad as much as the Pens just played a lot better. Sucks to say but at least Varly played great and we kept it close. Fleury with 21 saves. Way to few shots on goal by the Caps.

Posted by: ejohnsto | May 6, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Eh, we are still up 2-1 in the series and the Pens needed overtime to beat us in a game where it just didn't look like we even showed up. We are at our best when we are skating and going wide with speed. We haven't forced their D to have to turn and keep up with us and we havent really battled in the corners in the O zone. Ther is no reason we shouldn't be able to draw at least 4 power plays a game when we skate. Pitt will take penalties if you give them the chance too

Posted by: UMWHockey | May 6, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

I agree about Fleischman, you can almost guarantee he'll cough up the puck in the corners.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 6, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

When your goalie is putting a heroic performance in the net I would think the team would feed of this. Did Gary Betmann instructed Caps to lose this and Varly couldn't understand the message and was the only player to show up. Yes Malkin was a Beast no denying. But we made the rest of their guys like COOK, KUNITZ, GUERIN look like second coming of Messier, Gretzky.

Posted by: lightshow | May 6, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

I agree - caps didn't play well, and they need to play more physical. It's insane that OV is our toughest guy.

Also - could someone give Sloan a passing tutorial??

Six consecutive power plays for the Pens didn't help much either, until we finally get a call (which the announcers thought was going against us) and we score.

Give us two more pp's and we take the W.

Oh well - at least it comes back to DC now for game 5!

Posted by: Jaymagz | May 6, 2009 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Can someone point me to a site where I can see the number of powerplays per team in this series?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | May 6, 2009 10:30 PM | Report abuse

oh I'm positive alright, positive that whoever that d-bag announcer was(don't care right now) that if he had the chance to go down and perform a sexual act on Malkin, he would have. That's what I'm positive about!

Posted by: ludeman95 | May 6, 2009 10:30 PM | Report abuse

It always seems like the Caps send one or two guys to forecheck and drop everyone else back, which allows the Pens to exit the zone cleanly and then break through neutral. At least that's what happened tonight. Meanwhile, Pens send three guys to forecheck because they know the Caps D-men are prone to giveaways and bad decisions.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 6, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Just want to let you guys know, I still love all of you. I had to go away for a while to vent for numerous reasons, but I am back and filled with positive energy.

+Varlamov proved once again why he is the #1. He deserved to win this game, he played his heart out. Can't do anything about a deflection, and hell, he even got a huge chunk of it.
+Ovie played a great game...but only about half the time. Instead of turning the switch on and off, how about find a good medium and just play a solid game. Turn it up when needed.

-Good 5-10 minutes in the 1st, and then it disappeared. I grant some of this to having to kill incessant penalties, some of them being questionable. (Varlamov's slash anyone?) Still, we had spurts of even strength between them, and we never turned it on. We played a good first 10 and a good last 10...sort of a shame.
-Guys trying to do too much instead of making the simple clear. It's really not that hard to clear a puck, not over the glass. Start doing it, and quit being pushed off the puck.
-Lack of Erskine is hurting us again. Geurin was free to screen Varlamov on Malkin's goal. I reitterate; We miss our Sexy Lumberjack.

LETS GO CAPS.

Posted by: richmondphil | May 6, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

As much as I love Pothier. He had a really tough game. Maybe fatigue in the 3rd period started to set in from constant pressure by their forwards. Morrison Was solid through first half of the game but same thing struggled down the stretch.

Posted by: lightshow | May 6, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Look, Malkin was a beast tonight. We got outplayed for long stretches. We got out-shot badly. 7 to 2 in PP chances had something to do with that. It didn't completely explain their controlling the run of play for most of the night, but it was a big reason for it. The officiating was pretty bad. It is what it is. We knew they were going to come out guns blazing back home. Can't dwell on it, still up 2-1. Win Friday and we have total control again.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | May 6, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

don't rip on Calle, he was a quality defenseman. I would love to have him in his prime this series.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 10:20 PM

Hey, I loved Calle too, and he was quality, but only in the regular season, because he was a playoff jinx. How many pucks went off his skate, or stick, or shoulder... too many to count, because I'm lazy.

Posted by: oo7 | May 6, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I still feel good about this...2-1 Caps, with the pressure still on Pittsburgh. I thought there was a discrepancy in the amount of calls each team got. Six consecutive pp's is a bit much, but I guess when you're being outplayed that badly and are stuck in your zone bad things tend to happen. I still believe the Caps will split and bring this thing 3-1 back to DC. You don't beat good teams 4-0.

Posted by: reesem37 | May 6, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

And I also like how he says."Oh the Penguins have been working on their faceoffs, when the puck is dropped, Guiren holds up a player so Malkin can go free at the puck if won" Seriously?

Posted by: ludeman95 | May 6, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

This game's over folks, we took 'em to overtime and they got a lucky deflection. It's onto the next game where we take our pound of flesh.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 6, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Caps had lazy legs and lazy sticks. They really didn't seem to be going after the puck very hard. The fact that the Pens had spells of the same saved us along with Varly. The only way I thought we would win this one would be to steal it away. The Pens really deserved this one. The Caps have to be painfully aware that they were outplayed; I think they'll be fine for Game 4. Obviously they can't just wait for the third period to turn it on.

You have to play hard to get calls... we didn't play hard at all, not even in OT... we had their confidence shaking, noted by the bump on Backstrom at the end of period 3... you could see it... Now they better start playing their game & if Green is hurt, he should be on the bench, cause he is either SCARED or HURT.

Posted by: tony325 | May 6, 2009 10:37 PM | Report abuse

And who lost that last faceoff to Crosby?

If it is Steckel, he gets a ride...anyone else better be doing tons of faceoff drills.

Whoever that deflected off...BLOCK IT OR GET OUT OF THE WAY.

observations:

1) apparently whining works, pens certainly got enough PP chances tonight. love seeing them chatting up the refs.
2) it was role reversal night- we played like the pens in the past two games ie very strong in the first 10 and then fading as the game wears on
3) their checking wore us out really quickly
4) Varly was unbelievable
5) Sloan looked good
6) Green looked better (at least from a couple huge opportunities right in front to the goal, he deflected a lot of shots)
7) Poti def looked hurt after taking two shots to the leg/ankle, surprised Feds came back out too
8) we couldnt keep the puck, it was basically only a matter of time till the scored and won.
9) we cannot be outshot again. it catches up to you, just ask the rangers.
10) caps need a NON-OPTIONAL practice tomorrow to work out the kinks in their game v. Pens
11) Pens still haven't beat us in regulation this entire season.

I forgot who said the Caps were the underdogs, but they weren't, they were -107 favorites at the beginning of the series. Even -120 at one point.

Posted by: SC87 | May 6, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

I agree that the caps took too many penalties, but still those refs were some trash and I very rarely blame the refs after games. That call they made on Varly got me so pissed I was about to blow up half the league. That was barely a slash and if you're in front of the net slashes are gonna happen they're part of the game. In other words one game after Kunitz tried to decapitate our goalie, and neither the league nor the refs bothered to take action, our goalie gets penalized for a very meager attempt to defend himself.

Email vs. and tell them that

Posted by: ludeman95 | May 6, 2009 10:40 PM | Report abuse

As a whole, the team didnt win the battles, that simple. They also kept trying to pass thorugh clogged passing lanes again, like agaisnt NY and every other team they lost to this year. They dont drive the net, they dont generate traffic, and that leads to losses.

Nylander did nothing and the caps would have been better served bringing up a big body; see: hit discrepancy.

Flash gets pushed around too easy. He's on the PP for deflections but gets moved too easily. I know a lot of folk like him, but come on. Lets call a spade a spade, and he aint digging nothing but a hole.

Phils right, the loss of Erskine showed tonight. You know what else showed? Teh Caps play the puck too often and not the body. They keep poking at the puck Malkin is controlling WITH HIS F-ING HEAD DOWN. Hit that mofo! WTF? WHen the Caps play soft, they lose. Bet.

Posted by: oo7 | May 6, 2009 10:40 PM | Report abuse

The Penguins really turned it on in the 2nd. Caps were lucky to still be close enough to tie it at end of 3rd. Varlamov must be worn out, he kept the team in this game, when they didn't deserve to be. I was a little surprised that BB didn't come up with some sort of adjustments during the intermissions to slow up the charging Pens. Man, even after playing poorly and taking way too many penalties, the Caps were still in a position to pull this thing out and go up 3-0. Anyway, I'm a little nervous now...Penguins seem to have found something, and Malkin has shown up.

The Penguins were the more disciplined team tonight. If you think the Penguins won because they got 14 pp minutes then you are just a homer.

Posted by: SC87 | May 6, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

We are the underdogs because of history, and many people called the Pens.

Posted by: richmondphil | May 6, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Well some people on here have the class to admit when we got our rear ends kicked because we got out-hustled and out-played, I get sick of the whiners that seem to need to blame the officials. The officials didn't help the Pens outwork us on the forecheck all night long. We had two goals -- one, a freak goal 2 minutes in, the other a gift on a PP given to us with 2 minutes to go. We got the call at the end of the game, so we don't have anything to complain about. Without that gift of a call and the freakish bounce early on, it's a shut-out against us. So get some class, quit whining, and hope the Caps get off their collective buts before the penguins take charge of the series.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 6, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Rather than dress Nylander for the 4th line the team would be better with 7 defensemen. Even if Erskine comes back for gm 4 they could use the extra D man to keep everyone fresh for the next night and then we will not have to see Morrisonn skating at 2 mph for the last 20 minutes.

Pens 0
Refs 1

Obviously pays to complain about officiating. Hope we return the favor.

I don't mind if they make calls against us, but make it both ways.

And yes, being on the PK for 14 minutes does have an effect. Your top guys aren't on the ice and those that are will wear down.

Atrocious.

Quite simply the best game Varlamov has played in the NHL. And yet he gets no payoff for it. He'll probably make me eat those words and outdo himself again the way this kid is playing.

Caps owe him an apology after tonight. This game could easily have been 7-2 Pens. I'm not kidding or exaggerating when I say that.

they lost because of 1) giveaways 2) lost battles and 3) not driving the net/generating traffic. When they do the opposite, they win. Simple as that.

I only hope that Varlamov isn't a fluke, like Boucher or something. I don't think he's anything but legit.

Don't let Bylsma know about it, he'll hurry up and call Uncle Gary

Why not

CTCapsPhan,

I'm sorry I mangled your name, too many Donalds (really special and nice drink) tonight.

Caps were outplayed by a wide margin but Varly almost stole it. Pens played with passion and got a result. Game 4 is huge. We play them even and we win with superior goaltending. The boys need to give Varly some support, he almost stole another one. It's time for Semin to show up. Not fun watching your team get handled like that. Sorry for the ramble, but I'm frustrated. Where's the urgency???

why is it that when we touch their golden boys we get called for penalties but they can decapitate varle and stick butt fed in the chest and nothing happens?

Posted by: zisme | May 6, 2009 11:03 PM | Report abuse

Very sad loss for Varly. After rallying back the whole game.. just a tough way to lose after he played his heart out. Really impressive plays.

Knew it wouldn't be a sweep but I, along with others, started getting cocky... liked the idea of 3-0, but now we are more desperate, and we tend to play better in the frame of mind...

I won't even be able to watch the game, have plans I can't get out of. Maybe it's better that way for my nerves. Will however be tracking the score on my phone...

Beddy bye time for me boys and girls. Remember, we the underdogs in this series, will be there for game four to whittle away at Sid the kid and his cohorts. It's not like playing the Flyers buddy!

Varly, got hung out to dry by his own teammates.

Good Lord, give the kid some help.
Pit had way to many shots.

When you go public about officiating, things change. And here I thought that the coaches and players werent allowed to say anything. Tortalinni did it last series and Bylsma this one.

Awful performance up and down the bench (apart from Varlamov). I want to see the Caps team that tore the Pens a new you-know-what during the regular season, specifically that first Sunday home game. There is no excuse why the Pens should be outplaying and outhitting us- we are the better team. We are NOT the underdogs in this series, despite what some people might think.

Give me a break people. We got outplayed. End of story. Quit the pathetic whining about the officiating. We were lucky to even be in this game. One lucky goal. One gift PP at the end of regulation.

"Rangers got off to a 2-0 lead behind a hot goaltender despite playing poorly.

It sounds so familiar, it's scary.

There is a big difference, when the Capitals finally won against the Rangers, they won "Big" as in 4-0. Here, the teams are basically equal, except that the Capitals are currently more injured or depleted than the Penguins (Players out or recently injured for the Capitals: Brashear, Erskine, Fehr, Schultz, and now Fedorov), and despite it all it still took the Penguins OT to win in their own building! I am not too concerned about the loss only because it was still anyone's game all the way to the end despite the lopsided shots on goal numbers. What the Capitals need to do is understand that they in fact did not crumble in the Pen's stadium with the Pens basically playing desperate to stay alive for the series. Basically the Penguins must play their best in order to beat the Capitals by one and in OT! The funny thing is that the Capitals have not played a complete game yet!

@Dan_comet

I agree, we got outplayed but the Pens themselves had some lucky goals too.

There first goal was supposed to be a pass but it went right back to Fedotenko and he put it in. He was lucky it went back to him. The other 2 goals were off deflections, not all luck, but some.

And on the first goal, people are seeming to forget that Fleury dropped his stick or he could have played the puck. And then when it hit off the boards he could have played it again. So some of it was luck, but not all.

If the Pens can barely beat us when we play bad and they play thier best, you have to believe we will take this series.
