Game 4: Penguins 5, Capitals 3

Simeon Varlamov had perhaps his first off-night of the playoffs, allowing goals from five different Penguins in a 5-3 loss at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena, the first game in this Eastern Conference semifinal series that was decided by more than one goal.

The Penguins have evened up the series, 2-2, as the teams head back to Washington for a crucial Game 5 tomorrow night.

We'll have more soon, so stay tuned.

im so mad i dont know what to do with myself... pittsburgh fans need to go home to their shanties

Posted by: BondraMan | May 8, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Through four games, Caps haven't outplayed the Pens in one of them yet. I can't see this series going in the Caps favor after two stinkers in Pittsburgh. If Game 3 didn't teach them what they needed to do, not sure what will.

But again, it's about concentration with this team. Whether it's overskating a puck, making a bad pass, not keeping the puck on your stick, not clearing the zone or showcasing a faulty glove, it's all concentration. Right now, the Caps don't have a mental edge. The Pens do, and that's been the difference.

As for tonight, the forwards offered no support defensively and Varly let in two or three cheapies. Offensively, Caps really aren't crashing the net much. Again. Clark did for his goal, but the other two came from slappers above the dots. The questions rises again: Who is going to do the dirty work?

I'd say it can only get better, but I'm not sure if that's true.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

It seems everytime the Pens are in their offensive zone they're a threat to score. Every shot they take is a shot that almost goes in. I am worried about tomorrow cause our defense tonight was just atrocious.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

That one hurt. What can be done about our Norris nominee?

Posted by: uncatim | May 8, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

The defense has been atrocious through this entire series.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

After watching these playoffs, if Green gets the Norris, there should be a recount.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

They need to sit mike green, I don't care whether he is healthy or not, cause he is horrible. He was responsible for 2 crobsy goals in game 2, he was responsible for multiple goals in game 3, and now today he manages to outdue himself and pinch in and get caught multiple times for multiple goals leaving varlamov out to dry. YOU ARE HORRIBLE GREEN

I don't even know where to start...

I'm not as concerned with the loss - all that happened is the series is tied and we still have home ice. What really pisses me off is the lack of heart right now. They can't clear the puck to save their lives and are getting outworked in every one on one scenario.

Grow some sack and come out firing tomorrow because if you keep playing like a@@ you're goig to get beat.

Yes, Pens have gotten better, Caps have stayed the same. I have doubts about this series that I did not have before.

Posted by: ejohnsto | May 8, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Caps are done. This team has no killer instinct and little leadership. Plus, why is Mike Green playing? He has to be the most overrated player in the NHL. His defense is barely good enough for the AHL

Posted by: epwolff | May 8, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

yeah and it does kill me to say cause i love mike green but he is just not getting it done. he's a step slow behind everyone and he isn't helping out varly. he seems to be just sleep walking, or sleep skating. And Kozlov is just a slow skater.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

The Caps need to upgrade their "D" in the off season, which should start after the next 2 games. You cant win with defense as poor as they have. Mike Green has been hiding, has not scored, and has been to many times in the offensive zone and given the Pens odd man breaks. Just a joke of a team in my book. The Caps dont deserve to win this series.

Posted by: awireless1976 | May 8, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

It seems the penguins have 6 skaters to our 5. Kozlov and Semin are going to have to pick up some of the offensive slack. I hate to look back at the caps playoff failures, but I this isn't going in the right direction. They lose tomorrow, it is over.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | May 8, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

@Moose

You wrote: "What really pisses me off is the lack of heart right now." It's true, and that's why you should be concerned with the loss and the rest of the series, regardless of home ice.

This series is eerily similar to the Rangers set. Caps out play Rangers, find themselves down 2-0. But Caps eventually win because you could tell they were outplaying NY. In this one, Pens outplay the Caps but find themselves down 2-0. Pens have NO TROUBLE tying it at 2.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Caps are still going to win this series. And the next one.

Posted by: uncatim | May 8, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

I don't blame Varly, he was bound to have an off game, I blame the total lack of defense in front of him and the absolute lack of effort. The Caps need to shape up and actually show up to win. The Pens have been playing to win, the Caps seem like they've just been out there for a free skate. Its unacceptable and they need to turn it around tomorrow or else this series and the season is over. I hope Bruce whips them all into shape tonight, send them to bed without their dinner, what ever it takes. They need to learn to play with effort because the last two games have been unacceptable, and the first two games were mostly lucky that we won. Come on guys, man up, shape up, and come to win tomorrow night or else there will probably never be a cup in your future.

Posted by: jonsnoek | May 8, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

LOL what happened to all of your Caps in 5 predictions?

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

This is why GMGM had to make a move at the deadline to add some grit. Whoever asked who was going to do the dirty work is absolutely right. We are woefully lacking that kind of player who is crucial to playoff success.

Posted by: Irreverent_inDC | May 8, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

i'd hazard a guess that every one of you who's saying the caps are done are recent converts to the tribe. this series isn't over by a long shot. the NHL has what it wants, a series guaranteed to get at least 6 games. if ANYTHING, we should be getting most of the calls tomorrow, because you know gary wants this going to 7 and well if we were to lose, you can flush that dream down the toilet. step off the ledge, redskins turned caps fans.

Posted by: capsfansteve | May 8, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Yea this is part of the problem, I can think of some players to grow some, Flash, Kozlov, and Semin.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | May 8, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

they need to show a sense of urgency. seemed they were too comfy with a 2-0 series lead.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Aside from Green, where has Semin gone? He has been a horribly bad this entire series. He usually destroys Fleury. Except for Ovie, the stars have been sleepwalking.

Posted by: ejohnsto | May 8, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

The series is tied 2-2, we still have home ice and people are talking about acquiring a defenseman in the off-season - are you kidding me?

Yeah they played horrible but saying the caps are done right now is unbelievable.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

the back to back games was the worst hing that could've happened for the Caps. Pittsburgh has ALL the momentum and are playing again in under 24 hours. They will keep the momentum and win again.

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Erskine: Injured
Poti: Skating on a bum groin
Green: Injured

That leaves you with Mo, Jurcina and Pothier. Who knows what they're nursing. The D is battered, and that means you're already behind the 8-ball.

The difference tonight was that Varlamov was very very shaky. Tomorrow will say a lot.

The Caps deficiencies have begun to show. Considerably.

Posted by: oo7 | May 8, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

SC87: Hey, great game by you guys. (Don't try and say you're a Sens fan, we all know you're a Pens fan.) You guys played two great games in Pittsburgh. I thought Caps in 5 but obviously that's not gonna happen. It's anyone's game now.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 8, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Semin is nursing an injury as well.

Posted by: oo7 | May 8, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Ovie was sleepwalking tonight as well. He was a non-factor the entire 60 minutes. Except for his dirty knee on knee that is.

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I disagree with the comment saying everyone is new bandwagoners if they are worried. Granted this series is not over by any means, but longtime fans have experienced this over and over again with the Caps, especially against the Pens. It feels like the 90s all over again.

Posted by: Satts | May 8, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully the ineptness of our defense against the Pittsburgh forecheck will finally convince GMGM to get serious about upgrading it. And it's not like we need an earth-shatteringly good defense. Pittsburgh's defense isn't exactly elite, but they seem able to move the puck out of their zone without looking like they're trying to solve a complex physics problem.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

hey sc87: first off, stick to the Pens boards because you're a fool. Secondly, no doubt you'd never admit it, but when it was 4-3 I'm sure your weren't so bold. After all, Pittsburgh fans wrote the definition for "fair weather fans".

Posted by: epwolff | May 8, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Woah there I never called Caps in 5, I am a caps fan and I called pens in 6, the Caps are not a good enough team to beat the pens, they got lucky in games 1 and 2, let's get back to Green though, I HATE HIS FREAKING NO ENERGY SLOW A$$ MOVES IN THE ZONE IF YOU WANT TO BE A FORWARD BE A FORWARD, IF NOT LEARN HOW TO PLAY D.

And I hope whatever's going on in Varly's head goes away quickly. It doesn't look bright right now.
As for the Bears, their horrid first period goals against were justified, as I've learned. Neuvy got hit in the collarbone during pregame warmups. Bears'll be most likely seeing Cheeser in net tomorrow night.

I dont think the knee on knee was dirty, but knowing how the NHL loves Cindy, any chance at a suspension?

Posted by: CheyenneWY | May 8, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

@oo7

I really don't think injuries explain everything. I think it's concentration and mental toughness, two things the Caps haven't shown. An injury doesn't cause you to pinch in when you shouldn't. It doesn't force you to make a failed cutesy pass in an attempt to clear the zone. There's really more to it than that. I will not blame injuries or officiating for any problems the Caps have in this series. This is all on them. Individually, they nee to man up and take responsibility.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

I agree with CDON injuries is a very easy way to say that people aren't playing at the top of their game, bottomline, people are hurt, so what, the rest of the league is hurt, its the freaking playoffs, don't give me excuses.

Posted by: Hazz | May 8, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

@SC87
Get real. You and anyone else that wants to debate the hit head on - I'm game. Again Gonchar IF Gonchar took that hit flush it's fine but he tried to sidestep out of the way and the legs met. It's not like Ovechkin was way off the edge and stuck his leg out. Open your eyes homer.

I guess this back to back is the best thing since Boudreau ENJOYS GIVING THE TEAM DAYS OFF. There was no excuse to not be out on the ice even for a limited practice. They should've been working on their breakout of the zone with pressure on them. But nooooo - let's sit around our hotel room and not focus at all. To win the Cup - you eat sleep and breathe the game right now.

But they came out and again did not have anything as an answer for trying to break out. I'm throwing Boudreau under the bus right now. He's being outcoached. I don't like the grinder with the skill guys either. We'll see what this series holds but right now Boudreau needs to have this team around the ice.

Let's see what Game 5 holds. Should be a good one. Let's Go Caps.

oh i forgot to mention MIKE GREEN IS OVERRATED

Posted by: chokeitup | May 8, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

I don't think it should be a suspension anymore for Ovie (should've been a major) but if it was a suspendable act I don't think they would have the guts to do it because they would lose their whole Crosby vs. Ovechkin storyline, and maybe lose ratings from the common fan.

ya, i can't blame varly. it's justifiable to be tired after carrying the team on his shoulders. i don't think the team should have gotten the day off, though. that never worked any time gabby tried it this year. the team needed a new set of instructions to adapt.

Varlomov SUCKS, peewee shot from the point and it goes in.

Posted by: Cheef | May 8, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

i'm definitely not a fair weather fan. but after countless series lost to the pens, it just hurts to think about the possibility of losing another one. i'd like to stay optimistic and think that we're gonna come out firing on all cylinders tomorrow night, but this year's team has shown no effort at all. so many times i saw guys just standing around and watching a pens skating by to the puck. that's just unacceptable.

also, i feel like varly's head wasn't into this game, he seemed "off". the last 3 games he's pretty much bailed our team out. he can't do it all alone. one person cannot win a game. he needs a lot of help from our D and he's not getting it.

Posted by: jogabonito | May 8, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I think Varly can get past this. He can be a little overaggressive at times, and that has burned him. His glove has been REAL spotty. And he let in three cheapies tonight. But with all that said, he's been the guy who got the Caps out of the first round and the guy who is directly responsible for the Caps having even two wins in this series. But I think if he gives up a cheap one or two tomorrow, BB will pull him.

And I agree with a couple of other folks on here: BB needed to have his guys on the ice yesterday. I'm tired of all these off days he hands out. At some point, he's going to need to put them on the ice, make them skate and hold them accountable. It's time to stop coddling. This is the postseason.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin and Gonchar episode looked like a 4 min major for Ovie, but it's not suspension worthy and Pens fans get a taste of their own medicine, when NHL did nothing about Kunitz dirty play. Ovie didn't look at Gonchar when he checked his knee and Gonchar wasn't looking at Ovie. Sh*t happens.

Those far outweigh the one bad goal for me when it comes to evaluating this guy as the goalie of the future. No wonder you're an armchair fan with no hockey knowledge. LOL Keep posting. I'm amused.

I totally agree. They have lost their edge--their sense of energy, swagger, hunger, confidence, whatever the heart is. It pisses me of and embarrasses me. The Pens were scared at the start of game 4 and it felt SO GOOD. Now they have the mental edge.

I still think we win the series, as only the Caps know how to win when they come back at the last moment. I don't like this to be the pattern and ONLY show up when this is their last chance.

I say win game 5, lose game 6 and win game 7. If we lose at home today the odds will be against us and we will be worthy of them.

if anyone wants to see a team play with heart and intensity, just tune to the Canes/Bruins game.

I hate to say it but the canes have maybe half the offensive skill the caps have but they work hard, play sound defense and have tons of grit.

The caps need to learn they have to work much harder to win games in the playoffs. Unfortunately, they only have about 19 hours to do it.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

What does anyone honestly see to make you think the Caps will win this series?

Posted by: epwolff | May 8, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Oh, look who came out. It's Cheef. Cheef MORON. Go back to your hole in the ground where you belong. :-p

Varlamov is a superb goalie. He's TIRED. I would be, too. And he had to have one off night. He's been running with an angel on his crossbar since day one. It was bound to happen. I think we have no choice but to put Theodore in net tomorrow night and see what he can do, because Varly just plain looked beat out there. Beat as in EXHAUSTED.

And the Baby Penguins also beat the Bears, 6-3. Jeez. Parallels.

I don't know what's up with Green. I think giving his stick to the Hall of Fame stole away the mojo, though. He's one Cap who usually goes 10-12 games on the same stick, and the commentators were saying he's not liking the ones he's using right now... it's no excuse for being out of position, but if he wasn't out of position, he wouldn't be Green.

This series isn't over yet. We have a best of three now, with home ice advantage.

And we are not alone.

* Ducks vs. Red Wings - Tied at 2-2
* Canucks vs. Blackhawks - Tied at 2-2
* Capitals vs. Penguins - Tied at 2-2

Right now, Carolina vs. Boston is the ONLY series that is going 3-1 in the Hurricanes' favor.

We're in for an exciting post-season, and that's all I'm gonna say about it. This. Ain't. OVER!

this is the first time i have come on here and seen people bashing the caps. First, Greene is playing OK but not horrible, he is not overrated, and if he was scoring and playing well, you would not be saying this. Yes, the last two games have been horrible, i think the reffing is iffy, but not causing the losses. Odd man rushes are hurting us, gave up a goal on one. Powerplay is not scoring, and Penalty kill is on the ice too much. Varly finally looked human, which was bound to happen, i am hoping he goes back to pregame4 Varly and put tonight behind him. any who, there is 3 games left and 2 are in Washington, win tomorrow and we control our own destiny. Lose tomorrow and we may be in trouble considering we get NO calls in Pitt.

Posted by: mattzerby | May 8, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Varly has let in a number of soft goals since his first, also made some big ones.

You won't win without consistency.

You're right, if Green were scoring and playing well no one would be criticizing him for not scoring and not playing well. But since he isn't scoring and he definitely isn't defending well, people are rightly criticizing him. See how that works?

@TESS Yes. Sell your tickets. Your negativity is not needed in the building. Just be sure to sell to Caps fans.

Learn how to be realistic, what have i said here that isn't true, Mike Green has cost us the series so far, with a kid in a wheelchair and a stick instead of him, we would be up 3-1.

Secondly, I am a Caps fan, but you can't honetsly tell me you think we have owned this series? Which game did we outplay them? Game 1 for 2 period we weren't available. For game 2 for 50 minutes we didn't show up it took a gift from Ovie to save us, and even then we didn't show up. You shoudl announce for Comcast and join the rest of the homers and refuse to call it as it is. Be realistic.

I know it's what everybody does in the NHL playoffs, but if the roughly half of the Caps team that are playing like they are seriously injured actually ARE injured, the Caps management are doing a disservice by hiding those injuries. Right now, it just looks like a team that doesn't give a &*#!, except for a minute or two after they luck into scoring a goal. I can handle watching the team play hard but lose anyway, but right now, I wonder why I spent all year watching this team.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Cheef: I seriously can't believe you're ragging on Varly. We wouldn't even be playing had he not stepped in. He had a bad game, his defense also let him down. All goalies have games where they just don't have it, and tonight he just didn't have it.

It was mentioned earlier but the key to the rest of the series is score second.

Posted by: 555Mass | May 8, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

rachel216- good point. Carolina kind of laid in the weeds all season while Bos/NJ/Wash led the way. Now we'll probably watch them go all the way again...

As far as the Caps: this does not look good. They aren't playing well, are being outshot, and probably should have lost one of the first 2 games. We could be looking at 3-1 tonight instead of 2-2. Tomorrow night has a very scary feel to it, if the Caps don't show up to play, this could get ugly quick.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | May 8, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

I guess the other positive I see is that the Caps definitely CAN score on Fleury. He's not that intimidating of a netminder. Heck, Caps put up 18 goals against him during the season's four-game set. So slipping a couple behind him is not the problem. Issue is, if the Caps can't clear their defensive zone, then they have no opportunity to score. It has to start from the back, and if they're breaking down on the blueline, then nothing can be generated.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

CDon- I'm not making excuses. I'm just throwing in some perspective. Half the blue line is considerably banged up. That's pretty significant.

As for the forwards, does anyone here actually think Kozlov is suddenly going to be a playoff performer? Same old, same old. Semin is nursing an injury which is why he's been MIA. The Caps went from a team with 3 and half lines of 4th line players, to the current version. They were a great regular season team, but are missing some key elements to compete consistently in the post season.

I dont think they're done at all, but they have to do more than what they're doing, obviously. Tough to do when half your blue line is banged up and your goalie has a bad night.

Knee on Gonchar is not even close to being intentional. Ovie led with his shoulders, watch the replay and pay attention.

Also 2 on 1 when Crosby Scored. Boudreau has already said in his postgame. They instructed Green to GO( meaning pinch in and carry the puck in the offensive zone) 2nd Goal When Green tried to dump the puck but Guerin kept it in. Morrison was out of position and should have been where Crosby was on the pass from Kunitz. LEARN THE GAME!

Posted by: lightshow | May 8, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Fleury bobbled alot of pucks tonight, we just could not generate enough shots.

Varly gave up one bad goal. The other he was screened, it happens. The rest he was hung out to dry by the defense

Posted by: CheyenneWY | May 8, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

RedBirdie: I don't need to know what the injuries are. But it would be handy to know if, say, Green is playing like...he's playing...because he's not 100%.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

We have been psychologically scarred by our miserable playoff history. The fact is, if we win at home tomorrow (even if we steal it), we have all the momentum and only need to win one out of the next two. How many times have we looked in great position, then dropped Game 5 and went on to lose the series? It is still there for the taking, but this team needs to wake up and start skating and hitting.

Posted by: Satts | May 8, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

Pressure, generate traffic, drive the net=draw penalties, make the weak Fleury scramble, use puckhandling skills to score dirty goals. Thats the key to success. Take it to the bank.

I think its fairly obvious that something is wrong with Green. Probably Ovie, too. Feds probably cracked a rib. I'm sure they are all walking wounded. Gordon partially tore his hamstring last year and I had no idea, you really couldn't tell from watching him.

Posted by: RedBirdie | May 8, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

@lightshow

I had the same thought when Crosby scored on that 2-on-1. It seemed like Green was instructed to pinch, so I was perplexed when MO jumped in, too, leaving no defensive backbone for the team. That was really on him. He needed to stay put.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

4 lines required in the post season, Caps can't keep it up, they're out of gas.

Guys can't play 25 minutes back to back nights, Pens have managed ice time far better, look for the Pens to have a better jump tomorrow night.

If Fleury is steady, game over.

I sit here and just think "Unlike Pittsbugh, GMGM doesn't have a buy a team from the playoff every year." A minor victory, I know. But one that will carry the Caps far in the future.

Posted by: RedBirdie | May 8, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Yes I understand if Green is scoring people will not bash him, but when he is they will. That was not really my point, it seems there aer people in this forum that want to focus on the negatives instead of being a little more positive. Yes, i agree with who keeps saying we have not really outplayed the Pens yet. They have been flying, but we are a strong enough team to grab a win tomorrow. I don't think Theo should go in, but BB might make the change, could be good or bad knowing how theo plays it will be known on the first couple shots if he is in, if it was a good or bad move.

But we will see, Caps need to show maturity and bounce back, tomorrow I think makes or breaks the series.

Yeah, he had the GW goal because of a defensive breakdown. Good for him. But he was largely neutralized, certainly not the factor he was in the first two games. Just like last night. And he shouldn't have been first star. It should've been the grit guys who really made a difference tonight for the Pens. Crosby has four points in the last two games, OV has three points in the last two. Not much difference there.

I hope the players get a clue, but I think they are almost done. They are pretty much clueless on the ice and it is the same crap that they are doing now that they did back when they had that bad stretch.

I am sure they will sit there and say we need to do this and we need to do that. things like getting dirty goals or getting in front of MAF. they talk about it, but they do it for one game and don't do it again the next few games. they would rather have 4 people out along the boards and someone in the high slot.

I think they should pass more on the PP. Pretty hockey wins Stanley Cups and the more you pass, the more you will dazzle the other side and confuse them.......NOT.

But hey, in their minds, I think they are happy they got to the next round. They accomplished more this year than they did last year......

If I never have to listen to McLean again it will be too soon. So thankful TSN has the Olympics next year and not the Mother Corp (CBC's nickname up here since some foolish Canadians seem to equate them to all things mom and apple pie...I equate them to excrement).

I agree again with Moose: "I hate to say it but the canes have maybe half the offensive skill the caps have but they work hard, play sound defense and have tons of grit."

I was just thinking that if we win the series and have to face Carolina we are done for. Carolina has been consistently hot since--what--March? They seem unstoppable. The Caps have had difficulty to muster the will and determination to win since March. They have improved but to some degree carried the level of heartless play into the playoffs.

Let me count the ways:

--For the last 6-8 weeks of the season the Caps were routinely beat by lesser teams--"not playing their game"

--During the Rangers series they got into a 3-1 hole and narrowly won the series by finally deciding the "play their game" in the last 3 games.

--In the Pens series we had a lead in spite of everyone admitting that they were outplayed and outshot. It finally caught up with them and they started backliding--losing their advantage. So once again, they are not really "playing their game" to their ability.

So when are they going to play the game they are capable of? What does it take for them to click? There is still some basic ingredient missing from this team if it is so difficult to pull it all together. That's what it looks like to me anyway.

Posted by: caraveli | May 8, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

They need to Let Green to start playing the way he played in the regular season and not worry about being so Cautious. Our 2nd goal was a perfect example. He pinches in and creates a goal. We need him to be Mike Green again and not try to be someone he is not which is stay at home D.

Green playing more offense might not be a horrible idea, but the problem isn't our offense. Any time the Pens want momentum, they turn up their forecheck, and the puck gets stuck in our end for minutes at a time. Short of replacing our entire defense mid-playoffs (which might be tricky this far beyond the trading deadline), not sure how to combat that problem.

Bottom line now is lets see what this team is made of mentally. If they want feel sorry for themselves or give in, their toast. If they want to win the best of 3 series, they have to play mentally and physically tough. Something they lacked to do throughout the playoffs "CONSISTENTLY".

As I said before, put Aucoin in the line-up. The guy hustles, he consistent and he leaves it all on the ice. Honestly, you can't say that for 1 out of 3 guys currently on the bench.

Take the likes of Flash out of the line-up, reduce Green's & Kozlov's minutes and put some energy in this lineup.

Suck it up, tough it out and do the best you can! That's all we ask!

Corrections:

I meand by finally deciding to play their game instead of "the "play their game;" and backsliding instead of backliding.

I am sure you wouldn't have been able to sleep until I made these corrections

Love all the Caps fans celebrating over an injury. Can't beat the Pens straight up, huh?

Posted by: dan_comet | May 8, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Ice time management favors pens big time, Boudreau screwed up with that, look at the box score.

Posted by: Cheef | May 8, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Momentum will be bigger than Gonchar being out. The Penguins should be up 3-1 or even 4-0 right now. That's how much they've been outplaying the Caps.

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I wish we still had Gonchar, He was an offensive deefenseman who did not forget that he had to still play D.

Although, I do remember him being stripped by a Pen when he was bringing the pcuk out of the zone and it cost us the series.

Dan_comet - maybe tell Gonchar if he skates again to not stick his legs out to avoid a check. In a tough game to watch it made me chuckle watching him hobble off the ice.

Gonchar should have braced himself instead of try to sidestep the hit.

And Ovie shouldn't have aimed for his knee.

I have tickets to tomorrow's game. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME WHY I SHOULD BE EXCITED

Posted by: mwalk1 | May 8, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Not sure that Gonchar has been that much of a factor in this series. He scored a relatively soft goal tonight, but played weak defense on Ovie's third goal in game 2 (which turned out to be the game winner). It's been Malkin and Crosby dictating play on the Pens' power play, not Gonchar, and with the Caps' lethargic forecheck, the Penguins haven't had to rely on Gonchar to get the puck up the ice. I would be surprised if we notice any difference in the rest of the series with Gonchar gone.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Not cool laughing at an injury. It looke like he tried to make a move on Ovie and thats how they hit

Anyone think (other than the obvious caps haters) that Ovie went at his knee?

Posted by: CheyenneWY | May 8, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

NHL's new rule: no broken bones, no suspension. Stop asking for a suspension!

Posted by: Irreverent_inDC | May 8, 2009 10:41 PM | Report abuse

OV didn't aim for his knee. If I'm OV, and my game is about power and strength in my lower body and getting good acceleration and smooth skating, I'm not intentionally going knee to knee with someone.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 10:41 PM | Report abuse

SC87,

Crosby wasn't very good on Wed, but Malkin was and was one of the main reasons why you guys one. I disagree, Ovi was one of the only players that was trying out there. And for you and Cheef who think that Ovi intentionally kneed Gonchar--the only reason it was a knee-to-knee hit was because Gonchar tried to jump out of the way because he was afraid of being hit by Ovi.

And your love of Crosby is so obvious--he's a good player, but the fact that the Pens have two good players makes it a lot harder to stop one of them. Ovi is having to do it by himself since Semin isn't showing up.

Posted by: dfe1 | May 8, 2009 10:41 PM | Report abuse

@ CheyenneWY - if he did, no big deal in my mind. The NHL set the tone by not not suspending Kunitz for his cross check on Varlamov earlier. If you want to look at it from that angle, Ovie was just giving a little payback to the Pens. Chippy play begets chippy play

mwalk1: Be very excited. Hockey in May is a gift that we haven't had for a long time.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 10:42 PM | Report abuse

mwalk1,

How about for starters. We are it the 2nd round for the first time in 10 years. And series is at 2-2.

Men people are acting like we just finished 15th in the eastern conference or down 3-0 in the series. Get a Grip and be a true fan. There are ups and downs. Thats how playoff HOCKEY WORKS. One moment we feel on top of the world at 2-0. The next not so much. Thats Playoff hockey for you.

I am worried there are too many Fairweather Redskins fans here.

Posted by: lightshow | May 8, 2009 10:43 PM | Report abuse

I don't think we would even remember that hit btw Ovie and Gonchar if Gonchar weren't injured, except maybe that Gonchar looked kinda silly spinning through the air. Ovie tries to hit everybody; Gonchar tried to avoid it; it almost worked, but not quite. Not sure there's much else to it, except that Gonchar got really unlucky.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

Dan_Comet, give me a break. Ovi's hit wasn't intentional. If Gonchar didn't try to duck out of the way, it would have been a normal hit. I don't want to see any player get hurt, so I'm not happy to see Gonchar injured. But take a look at the play--Gonchar is afraid to get hit, tries to get out of the way, leaves his knee vunerable. And as someone else said, why would a player try to take out someone else's knee when his own could get just as injured?

Posted by: dfe1 | May 8, 2009 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Semin isn't showing up because he can't. Like I said, he is not an elite player, he is extremely soft and doesn't have heart and/or determination.

"That wasn't a cheap shot, and OV is not a thug. Pay attention to the game. But quite frankly, it's hard to listen to people complain about that when Kunitz cross checked Varly two games a go. Give me a break."

Big difference. The goaltender didn't suffer a potentially playoffs-ending injury.

Caps fans taking delight in Gonchar's injury is truly classless.

This Green stuff has to stop.

This is the playoffs, he is going to stay back, you cant expect him to be scoring goals.

He made a really nice play which lead to the Clark goal, no one is talking about that.

They were down, he and the team started to gamble and they paid for it. Benching Green will solve NOTHING.

The Pens just want it more. Until we play harder, we arent going to win. Plain and Simple.

Caps are just getting out worked. Pens are a more physical team. Semin, Greem, Flash need to play like it's the playoffs. The "D" allows Cindy to stand in front of the net and score at will. Come on Caps....anyone but Crosby allowed to stand in front. I've only seen Crosby hit about 3-4 times this whole series..the result..what 5-6 goals??? Please let's pick up the forechecking!!!
Go Caps tomorrow night!!!!

So an injury determines how dirty it was? You are an idiot.

Kunitz's cross check was dirty. But you morons fail to see that Ovy didn't target goocher's knee, like POS kinitz did to varly's neck.
