Game 5: Capitals 4, Rangers 0

Matt Bradley tallied twice in the first period, rookie goaltender Simeon Varlamov stopped all 20 shots the Rangers sent his way and the Capitals survived to see Game 6 with a 4-0 victory tonight at Verizon Center.

The Rangers pulled goaltender Henrik Lundqvist for the third period after Alexander Semin and Alex Ovechkin both added goals in the second.

The Caps will travel back to Madison Square Garden for Game 6 on Sunday for a chance to even up this quarterfinal series at three apiece.

We'll have much more soon, so stay tuned.

Ply like that on Sunday boys, and we're back in business!!! 20 shots? jeez.

Granted, Henrik was shaky, but its easy to make him shaky: just crash the net and screen him. simple.

Who would've thunk it? Brads? Well all the pressure is on the Rangers now. They know they don't want to come back to DC for a game 7!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 24, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Rangers kind of rolled over tonight, especially after Bradley get that shortie. Just a fantastic effort all around. And you could see that two of the four goals came from really crashing the net. OV made a great decision to put his head down and score in close, where it's easier to beat Lundquist. And Semin is just having a fantastic series. Only thing I would've liked to see is a PP goal. But not much to criticize in a 4-0 win. (Speaking of the PP, BB has to get Flash off the first unit or the PP entirely. He's making awful decision with the puck. He hasn't added anything to the unit in five games. Put Laich on the first team.)

Posted by: oo7 | April 24, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

4 Games, 3 goals in those and 2 Shotouts! Varlamov is looking hot!
And awesome goal from Ovie.

P.S. That 2nd Bradley goal was the weakest of this series and Lundqvist was the one who let that in. Caps can beat "The King" because they have "Tsar-lamov" ))))))

It's a two game series and I feel good about our chances.

Posted by: Terptwin | April 24, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Flash reminds me of Sykora on the Pens.

He has had tons of chances, but just cannot buy a goal. Maybe he needs to sit a game for someone else, though Flash plays a good finesse game when he is on.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 24, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Not that I think it's a bad thing to crash the net or set screens. But he was shaky before any of that. A breakaway snipe and a soft goal early. I say it again, we have outplayed them, our way works just fine...they have had as much as possible go their way for them to have won 3 games in this series.

Flash and Fehr need to step it up. I liked Laich and Stecks tonight. Actually Fehr was better tonight now that I think about it. Great win tonight, no Henrik jinx, stop talking about it media, we were outscoring them even before this game.

Varly 3 GA in 4 games. Has stopped 95 of 98 shots. I know it's only against the Rangers but we have to win this series now. Who is going to want to play this team if we pull it off and have this kid in net? Sunday at 2, bring this series back home!

Looked like some idiot poured a beer on him. If true, I hate that that happened. Makes D.C. fans look like a bunch of classless jackals, which obviously true of the majority of them. But one person can help ruin a reputation. BB better be ready for retaliation from NY supporters on Sunday.

I thought our first PP unit has been Backs, Semin, Laich at the forwards and Green/Ovie on the point all along?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

I don't know, rangerfan. Bradley's first goal was a minibreakway that he took all the way to the net. OV's goal was definitely a result of crashing the net. Fehr took it to the net a couple of times, too. Bradley's second goal was lucky and Semin's was just a snipe.

Posted by: CDon | April 24, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Great game. Glad to see the Fonz get a beer bath. Rags will be squeezing their sticks to sawdust Sunday afternoon, especially after Backstrom sets up an early powerplay goal from Green as he pinches back door.

Looking forward to game 7 on Tuesday.

I thought I had been seeing OV, Semin, Backs, Green and Flash. I remember that in one game BB pulled Flash and inserted Laich and he pounded in a PP goal. But later that game, Flash was back out there.

Posted by: CDon | April 24, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Caps need to take their scoring chances and if they do, theres nothing Rangers can do about it, because they allow two times more chances than create.
I hope its a 7 game series.

Posted by: Hazz | April 24, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

I guess Caps smell blood now. Rags had zero REAL scoring chances today. Hats off to not only to Varly but to the whole defense. Well, Green is still not himself but the other guys very solid. Let's hope they bring this composure to MSG.

Posted by: fnralch | April 24, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Lets face it, Rangers flat didn't show up tonight and the Caps did. The first 2 goals were an indication of this. They will show up now at home for game 6. They know they don't want to come back here for game 7. We will see a much different team come Sunday. If we play like we did tonight though we will win no matter what they bring. This score wasn't even close to describing what happened on the ice.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 24, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Brads breakaway goal was scored by crashing the net. He was right in his face. Ovie also scored by crashing the net.

When I say crash the net, I don't necessarily mean just sending a 3rd or 4th liner in to run the goalie. I am talking about scoring goals by being right in his face. Not taking stupid wristers outside the slot.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 24, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Maybe I wasn't paying attention CDon...maybe one or the other had just come off a shift sometimes. I vastly prefer Laich on the 1st unit. 2 guys who can take draws and Laich in front of the net.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I can say this, and I would think most would agree. If the rangers powerplay was at 15 or 17 percent instead of closer to 10 and the pk and team d along with goaltending the rangers have had I dont think it goes to 6 games. I can say that the pp is the only real weak point for the rangers, with a pp they are a higher seed and have less pressure in every game

Posted by: rangerfan44 | April 24, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

CDon I'm with ya. There's nothing wrong with heckling the guy (in my mind) but pouring something on him is pretty classless. You might think a Philly or NY fan would do that, not in DC.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 24, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

@phil

I agree with you but Brads was the first true breakaway we've had in the series, so that's not something you can just say "crash the net" I mean he's in alone, it's a product of the play not a philosophy. Kinda similar thing with Ovie's goal...he got through all the bodies boxing him in at the blueline and had a clear lane. I have no idea how he always puts it home after he makes a couple of moves that instantly turns it into "#1 highlight if he scores".

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

@rangerfan

By the same token, if the Caps were operating at their normal 25 percent PP and scoring their normal three goals a game, this series would've ended in five for the Caps. These hypothetical games prove nothing, really.

Didn't OV crash the net when he scored? and Lundy was NOT shaky? Then how did we score 4 goals? Stop being a homer and let's be real. Lundy WAS shaky. I don't know what the heck you were watching.

Posted by: oo7 | April 24, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Lundy was only shaky on the Brads 2nd goal. The move Brads (yes I know, Brads?) put on that breakaway you aren't stopping, it was a great finish. Semin's goal was such a snipe no chance either. Ovie's goal...well...it was an Ovie goal. Sometimes it just has a mind of it's own and you aren't going to stop him on one of those plays.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 9:56 PM |

Exactly though. Like I said, I don't mean necessarily crashing the net in the traditional sense. Just taking the puck to the net, instead of taking wristers outside the slot. Flash's breakaway, he shot much farther out than Brads did. Brads was right in his face. That is how you get the puck through Lundy, not from wristers from outside the slot.

Instead of taking a wrister on the rush, how bout they lower the shoulder and drive to the net. Breakaways are a prime example of the scoring I am talking about. I guess I mean driving to the net, not the traditional sense of crashing the net.

2 goals scored by driving the net, 1 off a screen, the other a LOL of lundy.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 24, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

@hank

I've been saying that since Game 3. But hindsight is 20/20 and Varly never gets in the series at all WITHOUT that terrible game by Theo. So it is what it is...this series has had everything possible go their way to get it to where it's at. We are the better team, but we dug ourselves a hole. We're not out of it yet, it'll be ours to win if we can duplicate this performance Sunday afternoon and bring this series back home for Game 7.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

I forgot about Flash's mini breakaway...but, let's be honest. If he lifts it he scores. Flash is as snake-bitten as Fehr has been.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

hahaha, BB touching on Ovie being "shut down" with 6 points in 5 games. For the non math majors out there that's one less than Malkin's 7 in 5. I know Biron is on par with Lundy too...

Speaking of that I'm not looking forward to another NBC lovefest with Mike Richards tomorrow. I almost hope the Pens end it in Philly...I would laugh about it.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 24, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Flash has had chances and he's whiffed on most of them. Fehr has just looked bad. He's not generating anything, but I think he played his best game tonight, as he took advantage of his size and took it to the net a time or two.

Okay, I'm convinced you became a fan right before the series began. Stop being a homer and please be real. The Rangers are so inept on offense they shouldn't even be in the playoffs. That offense is a complete joke. But whatever, you can keep on thinking whatever you'd like. But if I was a Rags fan I would not even say that.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 24, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Flash shot it out a bit further back, hence why Lundy nabbed it. If he did lift it a bit more, it probably would have been a goal. But honestly, Flash was well outside the crease, Brads foot was in between Lundy's.

I just want to see them drive the net. It is how you score against guys like Lundy. I guarantee we won't see any goals like the 2nd one tonight on Sunday.

Thank you for a great series to both coaches and both teams.

dave, phil, it's crashing the net because they get within 5 feet rather than shooting wristers and slsoshots from 30 plus away. they take it to the net, they make henrik do more than block and catchabd that's the key. it's reaction up close. scrambling.

Yeah I don't expect any more softies of that nature the rest of the series. It'll help with our guys confidence though to shoot the puck. I don't mind any shots from any distance if someone is going to the net as you say looking for a rebound. Shots create more chances.

Varlamov/Pothier - 4 games, 3 GA

Rachel, I was definetely one of those strongly opposed to seeing Varlamov in Game 2.

I'll admit it, I was wrong. Varlamov has stood his ground tremendously. It does still create future goaltending debacles, but winning trumps any future concerns right now.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 24, 2009 10:22 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I'm with you Phil...although I wouldn't say I was opposed to Varlamov starting...I definitely told my brother excitedly when I saw it was him that "The kid is in". I did think that Theo deserved another chance to redeem himself.

Varly's play has answered all that noise. That's why BB has a Jack Adams award on the mantle already and is the head coach.

So I come home from screaming "VarLAmov" for 2.5 hours to read the Post online caption telling of "Mike Bradley"'s goal. The article refers also to "The Ovechkin"--which I kinda like, really.
Nick Freaking Backstrom, people. Three zones of smart, hard work, shift after shift after shift.

I wanted varly in after game 1. before the series started, I reasoned that he isn't seasoned enough, and I still think that's a reasonable consideration. let's be honest, the rags have missed a lot of chances, rebounds and empty nets. a more skilled offense that spends more time in the crease like Pitt and NJ and Boston won't make those mistakes over and over. But the caps are shoring up defensively and that will control things a lot more. the most important thing is he isn't letting in soft goals and has mafeonly a handful of glaring errors, and only one resulted in a goal.

I have been to both games at MSG and yes, I will be there on Sunday.

MSG is very loud and the Rangers will get a shot of energy. We need to hold tight for the first 5-10 minutes and play a solid defensive game. They have trouble scoring so let's keep it that way.

Play a good road game and take advantage of the chances we get by crashing the net.

It is obvious that when we bring our "A" game, we are extremely tough to beat.

Oh and by the way, Ovie is starting to score again. Uh-oh for the Rangers.

If you truly beleave that after the rangers shut down the caps in 3 games and did nothing on the PP that with a good PP they wouldn't have done better...well you don't know hockey. If the rangers pp was able to score maybe they get a goal in one of the two shutouts when it's 1-0 or 2-0 or maybe they mount a comback off of the pp and don't end up playng from behind the entire game. Same goes for the caps pp, if it could have beat the rangers pk when they had to have a goal maybe it's 3-2 caps or series over. Don't pretend the caps have been so dominate that the rangers getting a few extra goals wouldn't have changed anything.

CT. I expect game 6 to be the best so far for both teams. The caps have some confidence, lundqvist rarely has back to back poor games, and with torts as the rangers coach the rangers havnt had bad games back to back. I said it earlier, I'm not saying the rangers win, but I bet they don't lose giving up 3 or 4 goals.

You can play hypotheticals all night long, but the main fact is if both teams bring their "A" game, the Caps have more talent to win 9 out of 10 of those "A" games. The Caps have not brought their "A" game too much and it is not because of the way the Rangers have played them.

IMHO we have outplayed the Rangers in every game, but we have not played our "A" game which leaves the door open for the Rangers to win.

I do not see how the Caps will not bring their "A" game on Sunday. Not saying they will definitely win, but it should be fun to watch. I'll be there in Section 92 to enjoy.

I agree, it will be another 2-1 type game.

The trolls are here, believe me. They just don't have the guts to post at times like these. Can you imagine hanging out on another team's blog and trash talking because you've got nothing else better to do? Sad, pathetic.

About the water bottle incident: "Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau was unaware that the incident had occurred, and wondered what the delay was about. Did Boudreau ever have something like that happen to him during his minor league days? "I can't even remember. But I was in 'Slap Shot,'" he said."

LOL! Our coach is ridiculous.

I almost hope the Pens end it in Philly...I would laugh about it.

Dave: I say take it to Game 7, let the winner of the series be so worn out from the last game, that they are too tired to keep up the second round! Just a thought ;)

I think the series comes down to goaltending and biting chances. Except for two games the rangers have had better goaltending (helped alot by great team d) and they scored when they had good chances more than the caps. In those games the rangers lost they didn't show up defensivly and were not willing to go the extra mile to score. I hope both teams show up on Sunday, because evenif the rangers win I want to see a good game! I am a hockey fan afterall, also let's hope the refs call it fair and proper, no tickytac calls like some games have had and not putting the whistles away either. Both teams have been hurt this series by refs who seem to want to be noticed and to become the story.

Oh, and in his four starts, Varly still has not given up the total amount of goals Theo did in his one start. Wow!!!

I was never a Theo basher, I thought he played good enough. But as the slogan goes, "good is not good enough!" Cannot wait to see how Varly does as a full time starter next year (though I still think they will ease him into the spot, work load wise that is....he will start, but share his games maybe 60-40 or 70-30 percent at first, is what I am thinking).

@CDon

I'm with you on my opinion of the Pens. I'm rooting for Philthy also and hope the series goes to 7 games. The Penguins current cast of characters reminds me of my younger daughter's middle school rivals, what with all the trash talking going on. All the stuff going on between the Pens and Caps brought back those not so great memories.

I'm no Philthy fan by any stretch of the imagination either. I hope the winner of that series gets dumped in Round 2!

@BlondeCapsFan,

Also want the Pens/Philthy series to go to 7 games, with the winner to get dumped in Round 2.

@The_Stanley_Caps,
Unfortunately, IMHO that percentage will be unfairly skewed by the fact that Theo and his 4M a year salary will have to be justified. That is if JT is still here.

The business end of the situation dictates that we cannot have 4M a year sit out for any real duration, so I think Varly's playing time will be unfairly limited. That's reality I guess.

"also let's hope the refs call it fair and proper, no tickytac calls like some games have had and not putting the whistles away either. Both teams have been hurt this series by refs who seem to want to be noticed and to become the story."

Overall in this series, I really do not think the refs are doing that bad of a job. They have rarely left a real sour taste in my mouth the way it sometimes has been in the past (last years Caps/Flyers series for instance). I know you mentioned the hooking non-call on Fedorov that ended up with the Ovi goal, but there were plenty of non call both ways tonight (Laich was tripped up a whole bunch at one point, several times in one play even, and there was a pretty glaring missed trip/hook against Ovi). I like consistency, and I think the refs have been rather consistent in when they are going to make a call or not. The only time I thought they got a little whistle happy was in game three on the third (I think it was) call on Avery, but then again, Avery has earned that...no benefits of the doubts there.

In the end, yes, refs do makes some glaring mistakes, but hockey is the fastest sport in the world, its just part of the game. I have been watching other series, and I feel that in general the Caps/Rangers series seems to be getting some of the better officiating, more consistent. As easy as it is to blame officiating, I just think its rather pointless in the end. I think it is one of the tougher jobs in sports.

At the game, I didn;t see torts throw the water bottle from my angle, but it was incredible the sniping back & forth. Tortorella was out of control, the fans had pushed in the glass. Tortorella was giving the finger to the fans as one Caps fan was escorted off. And the most amazing thing was to see Ted leonsis jabbing his pointed finger at Tortorella, screaming at the top of his lungs.

What a game!

@fnralch

I noticed that Avery was benched -- for disciplinary reasons.

Will he go after Semin on Sunday, as you say? Or will Avery be benched again? Anyway, Semin is tougher than many people think. He'll show Avery and company, as he already has, by 4 playoff goals, so far. He's like my first born -- doesn't start fights, but finishes them.

Great game! I noticed the new lines, with Bradley, Gordon, and Steckel together. And Brash, Fehr, and Laich. Result: 2 goals by Bradley. Okay, one goal was a shortie on PK.

The PP seemed off. So BB juggled the PP units. We saw more energy but no PP goals. Green still looks off. Is he still sick? I swear, he was sick last month (and had missed a game with it). Get well, Green. Has Green just not been getting enough rest so he keeps getting sick?

Avery will probably be put in for Sunday. Rangers need him.

Oh and to add on just a little more...

That said, I do hope that refs are held accountable (somewhere down the line) for absolutely horrible calls or bad patterns in their calls.

Also, someone mentioned this a while ago, but as most of the Refs are North Americans, I think it would be pretty interesting to start getting more diverse/worldly reffing into the league. Refs who grew up watching/playing/officiating in different hockey systems. As many of the players and stars in today's game come from Europe and other parts of the world, it would be neat to see Officials representing those regions as well. Not sure exactly what kind of effect this will have on the NHL, but could open up how the games are being called a little bit....who knows.

GO CAPS!

add another vote option: it's up to the caps. go to the net= win.

this was pothier's worst night in the playoffs imo. he got spun around, avoided giving out hits in the defensive zone, looked as confused as if u had just dropped him on the ice from mars, etc.

Guys:

I posted on Boswell's piece on Varlamov that he had the 4th graf all wrong, that people weren't trying to pronounce it Var-la-MOV (with an emphasis on the third syllable; which, in a three-syllable word is very rare in English, even awkward) ... but rather VAR-la-mov.

If I'm right, and if more of us remind him of it, it might be caught in time for a second print edition.

We can do this if we bench the useless Flash and Fehr and bring up some Hershey folks.

The only difference between this so called putrid performance and how they played in the games they won was goaltending. For once Henrik didn't stand on his head and we see the result.

Rangers are the worst team to qualify for the playoffs in the East. They can't make 2 passes in a row. They pretty much suck as a team. Crappy team with a great goalie is all they are. A gift by Theo and 2 steals by Henrik account for their 3 wins.

Also, we all knew Tortorella was a pleasant fellow. The guy looks like a serial killer ready to strangle someone at any given moment. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when he was telling Avery that he won't play.
