Game 7: Capitals 2, Rangers 1

Sergei Fedorov scored with 4 minutes 59 seconds to go and the Capitals completed an improbable rally back from a three-games-to-one deficit, beating the New York Rangers, 2-1, in Game 7 at Verizon Center.

With tonight's win, the Caps advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 1998.

Update: The Carolina Hurricanes just scored twice in a 48-second span to rally past the New Jersey Devils, which means the Caps will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the next round.

Update No. 2: Check out Simeon Varlamov's birthday present from his teammates.

We'll have much more soon, so stay tuned.

When Avery got hurt, it sickened me, and I can tell you I haven't felt that bad since Fidel Castro had his heart attack.

Posted by: tominfl1 | April 28, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

At the request of internet posters and comments in chats, boxing scoring was used and the Caps actually lost by a unanimous decision, 26-25.

Posted by: sitruc | April 28, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Unbelievable!!! Fedorov!!! 39 years old! Winning goal and takes out Avery for good measure. Wow, that was nerve wrecking! The Rangers definitely played their best game of the series... Oh, and a word about Varly. Outstanding!!! That's the kind of goaltending that wins series. Nerves of steel. Wow!!! Congrats everybody!!!

Now let's see who we'll play next.

Posted by: ranndino | April 28, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Varly is so freakin' good. If it were not for him, it would've been over early. I love Varly.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 28, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Didn't Al Koken predict that Federov would decide the game?

Posted by: MKadyman | April 28, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Such a fantastic feeling! I'll be up all night. Our team really justified our faith in them. And Federov proved his value as the experienced, senior player. What about Varly? Who thinks we would have won today if Theo was in goal?

I couldn't relax until the third period when we spent the majority of time either in their defensive zone or the neutral zone. At that point I thought it was just a matter of time. You have to give the Rangers credit for a heck of a game.

Sergei put that shot into about nine square inches - phenomenal.

We have made progress, let's go further.

Can't believe it! I was starting to worry that this baby was going into OT and we might find ourselves in the same situation as last year.

7 Deadly Zins, in honor of a seven-game series.

To pokerface: I like best the Tuaca in what I call Tuaca-rita, lime and Cuervo and ice and the Tuaca in place of the Cointreau.

Let Varly now have his birthday party.

Clarkie really put some good energy. He plays Game 1 for sure! The 15-16-17 line!

Jurcina really turned it up. And the Devs announcers said some Devs fans were watching and when Feds scored they started mock chanting the Rags fans "Rangers score chant."

Poor Avery. Hope he's not hurt.

Posted by: tominfl1 | April 28, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

First in line (to eat crow)!

Yummmmmmmmm. I love crow!!

Thanks CAPS for showing me that you can play with grit and determination. Few teams even when they have more talent can actually win three-in-a-row once they are down 3-1 in a series. At least our nerves should be much better early in the next series now that we have a series win under are belt.

The bar gets raised higher with our next round opponent.

I'm also eatting crow. I did not believe when it was 3-1 and now we have comeback and yes, crow tastes delicious! So happy I was wrong.

Varly is so mature for a 21 year old. More mature than Avery. Avery did play a great game but he complained way too much to the referees.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 28, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

So ranger fans,
is reality finally sinking in? That maybe an ok defense in front of a stellar goalie is enough to squeak into the playoffs but doesn't win playoff series? That's why the series are best of 7; cream rises to the top.
Have a nice summer

So Caps Fans,
way to keep the faith. Onward to round 2. Lets go caps!

Having the better players makes all the difference. And the Caps have the better players this year. They have lost some 3-1 leads over the years, but it was usually when they had no business being up 3-1. Same with the Rangers this year.

Caps have a lot of talent. Wish they were playing the Devils next, but Pittsburgh should be fun. Maybe they will be a little beaten up from having played the Flyers.

Caps - Pens.

Greatest match-up since it was Earps vs Clantons, Tombstone, AZ, Oct 1881.

In case you weren't there, Earps took em in a sweep with Doc Holiday leading the power-play.

Gary... Gary... are you okay? You're not dreaming... Washington is playing Pittsburgh in the playoffs. No, Doc Brown didn't create a flux capacitor. This *is* 2009 and Ovechkin is a Cap and Crosby is a Penguin. Gary Bettman? Hello? He passed out again.

Posted by: Matt23185 | April 28, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

There is one bad thing to playing the Pens though, they're still stuck in the early 90's and still think they're winning Cups left and right. There's only 1 thing worse than a Ranger fan and it's a Pens fan. Have I ever told you how much I HATE the Pens and everything from Pittsburgh! Steelers suck too by the way! The Pirates too and whatever basketball team you think you're gonna get in future. I'll start the chant now "Go back to Pennsyltucky"!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 28, 2009 10:21 PM | Report abuse

The whole facing devils vs. the pens debate is going to start and I'd like throw out the first salvo by saying, I don't mind the caps v. pens match-up.

The Caps play better against teams that don't have stiffling defense. Offense vs. offence and Fleury vs. Varlamov. I like our chances on both fronts. Our D has to step up big.

GO Caps.... I'm gonna love beating the PENS... but please tell me the Green is going to start playing better. Short of Game 6 he has looked awful. For most of the first two periods tonight he looked completely lost and almost had a devastating give away in the third. I think Gabbie plays him too many minutes. [by the way don't get me wrong, I love him, but he's looked lost this series]

I like the Gould vs Mario thing and the winner gets a pizza delivered between periods.

Can we have Jaromir Jagr drop the puck for Game 1?

No, I didn't think so.

Can we get Jagr to bet in Vegas and let us know the odds? Much better chance.

I really think the Caps will KILL THEM.

Last year the step was making the playoffs. This year it was winning a round. Now, the Caps have the killer mentality and the confidence. They got past the real obstacle. Just winning a round.

The Caps have more raw talent than any team left in the playoffs. The only question is can they overcome themselves. That is always a question with a young team until they do it.

MVP for the series? Well I know Feds scored the most important goal but we wouldn't have gotten here if it weren't for Varly. In my mind Varly gets the MVP for the series, hands down.

Caps - Pens.

Greatest match-up since it was Earps vs Clantons, Tombstone, AZ, Oct 1881.

In case you weren't there, Earps took em in a sweep with Doc Holiday leading the power-play.

This is shaping up well for us I think, if we can focus and handle our business.

We are in for a fight against the Pens, our second such fight in the playoffs. I disregard the regular season stats that show us as the clear favorites.

The Bruins dominated the first round, and they are facing a team in the Canes who they truly dominated in the regular season. So maybe a second series sweep?

When we win that a battle tested caps team vs. an untested Bruins team?

I like it!

Bradley was effective for 1 game. Don't get me wrong, he plays his role well but if it weren't for his 2 goals you wouldn't have put him up there. With the exception of 1 game Varly didn't give up more than 2 goals in a game and shut them out twice. If Theo is in net we've already hit the golf course, if Brads is gone we still win 2-0. No offense but I said MVP of series not game 5. He certainly wins MVP for game 5.

Well I wanted Carolina to beat NJ in order to stick it to NJ fans who are flying on "cloud 7" and it happened.
As for Caps win than its amazing that Fedorov, who missed the shot from Ovie pass in last PO series (game 7 OT against Philly) on empty angle actually scored the series winner today againste Rangers.
Now its time to bring Pitts down from "cloud 7" :)

TSN reporting the Canes and the "B's" play on friday.....

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | April 28, 2009 10:43 PM | Report abuse

God had a hand in Semin's goal tonight.

God had a hand in Carolina's stunning 48 second come back win.

What does this all mean? There's a greater force out there that wants Pens vs. Caps.

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

My thoughts:

They're the deeper team today. Too tired to go through it right now.

BUT,

With Varly in net, we have a shot.

OV needs to:
- Hit Malkin like he was doing prior to their kiss and make up
- Stop trying to beat 3+ guys and turning puck over. Instead, dump n chance or just or wait for other wingers.

If OV can do that, it should elevate his game and our team's efforts in general.

Mike Green needs to:
- Crawl out of hole he's been in for 6 of 7 games this series.

If the above things can happen, we can do it.

Pittsburg doesn't play the kind of team defense game that NYR do. They will play open style, which we've excelled in and got to where we are by playing htis style.

GO CAPS!!

I want the Pens more than anything. What is this stuff with some Caps fans fearing the Penguins? What is this fear? Fleury? He's not as good as Lundqvist. Crosby? You can't be serious. He is a person to be contained, not a person to be feared. Malkin? He is a very good player, but he's too much by himself on that team. Gonchar? Stay off the PK and he is neutralized. Guerin? He's shot his wad.

The Penguins are ducks on the pond and the Caps have the shotgun. I will be shocked if more than a 5-game series.

I am already planning for game 6 victory at home vs Boston in the Eastern Finals.

Bring on Detroit.

Here is what I read in the Pens' blog:

"Varly=toast"

And they think that we are the easiest of the possible opponents in the draw:

"I don't think this will be an easy series by any means, but I think we got the best draw of the four potential 2nd round foes. NJ may have been a close second though. Would anyone really have wanted Carolina even though we would have had home ice? They have been just as hot as the Pens, and are clearly a charmed team right now.. I'd rather face them or Boston in the conference finals and have a potential epic series."

This quote will make victory sweeter. I didn't know they thought so highly of themselves. They must have blotted our wins against them from their memory.

Not being favored to win the series may be the best thing that could have happened to us.

I was at the game. What was up with the first period? That was awful. Varly won them that game. Caps looked like they didn't want to win. The 3rd period and the excitement made up for it in the end, which was an experience in itself. Seriously though, I hope they don't play like that against Pittsburgh. Man, that was a painful game to be at. Talk about beingon the edge of ones seat. I finally got a parachute! Actaully, og to the shirt and someone else got the parachute, but we traded. I've got shirts, but no parachutes.

Fedorov, that makes me feel so good. BUT, I credit Bradley with the game winner, despite who shot it. Funny enough, when he passed, and I said great pass bradley out loud, I thought of jmu wearing his shirt (thanks chicka!). That means I've been on this blog too long. Of course, I'm wearing my Semin shirt again, and I had a mojito at Zengo. So Mojito's here on out, .

Not a pretty game, but an awesome outcome. Bring on the Pens. (Carolina did it, eh? I'd say I prefer a mortal Brodeur, but really I prefer a second round).

So fing happy.

It is an interesting circumstance that our farm teams are also playing each other with an almost identical schedule for the first four games.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 29, 2009 12:00 AM | Report abuse

Here's a story.

The team had a young star who was the face of the franchise, he wore #8, and was born under the sign of Virgo.

He had a friend on the team who was the team's other main star, who was a Pisces, was slightly older, and absolutely hated to talk to the press.

The team had nearly made a late season improbable comeback that fell just short.

Am I talking about the Caps? Believe it or not, the answer is No. I am talking about the Baltimore Orioles of 1982 who were 3 games behind in the regular season vs the 1st place team Milwaukee Brewers) and had a 4 game series. They won the first 3 but lost the last game. The next year was better -- they were World Champions. #8 for that team was Cal Ripken. His Piscean friend, the other team star, who hated talking to the press, was Eddie Murray.

Yes, there are parallels between the Caps and the Orioles of the last generation. Ovi is like Ripken and Semin is like Murray. One difference. Ovi and Semin are closer in age than Ripken and Murray. The Caps have many more young stars. The Orioles of that era were mostly veteran, if memory serves me correctly. So, I think the Caps' long team prospects are likely better than those of the Orioles of that era.

So, I kept playing my "America's Greatest Hits" CD at work which includes the song "You Can Do Magic" to honor the Caps who in some ways remind me of the Orioles of the early 80's.

I was at the game also. Caps played poor in 1st period. Only two shots on goal but one shot went in the net and we were tied.

Oddly enough, I took that to be a good omen since I can remember too many Caps games where the Caps would be leading in shots while the other team would have barely any shots but get the 2nd or 3rd shot in the net to take a 1-0 lead.

Second helping: I thought Erskine was terrible last year and thought GMGM was crazy to resign him this year. WRONG AGAIN! What a great series by John, and a monster game again tonight!

Varly is the real deal. He was so solid out there tonight. He was the coolest one on the team in periods 1 and 2, when the Caps were running around looking very tight and a little out of it. The Rangers didn't get too many shots--thanks to great D--but Varly was a very steady presence and made the few big saves that he needed to make. Gave them the chance to win, which is just what you want from your goalie.

A lot of guys stepped it WAY up in the last few games: Gordo, Steckle, Poti, and (who would have thought it) Kozlov. His goal in game 6 was awesome, especially crashing the goal, which is so unlike him.

A $4M shot by Feds tonight. Everyone thought he was going to pass to Ovi, and he hit a very small open spot with a bullet. I thought all along that he and Green needed to get back from their ailments earlier in the series, and they both made key contributions in the last two games. If Feds was saving one, this was the time to come through.

My wife and I were at the game 7 against the Flyers in 1988. That was still the most exciting hockey game I've ever been to. This game was the most nerve-racking one. But it was also the loudest experience I have ever had. The last 5 minutes was just unbelievable. It literally hurt your ears it was so loud.

So thoughts on the next round: I figured we had better odds against NJ, but the Pens will be a lot more fun. It should be a very exciting, and close series, and it will be great to see Ovi get his chance to compete against Crosby and Malkin in the playoffs--finally. Win or lose, everything after this is gravy, from my perspective.

P.S. Still waiting for Flash to contribute. He didn't play badly in this series, but he one of the few that was a little disappointing. Maybe the Pittsburg series will be a style of hockey more suitable for his game. Maybe this will be his chance to make some contributions for the team.

CapsFan75 -- Actually my handle has nothing to do with me. When I registered for the Post several years ago I put myself down as a 103 year old female software executive making > $500K/yr named Sonyask. Perhaps next year I'll change my identity to the more accurate 51 year old rabid male Caps fan, but for now the mojo's workin and we're in round 2.

And I'd like to thank Voros for flipping me a puck over the net during warm ups. Did you know the Rangers were trying to hit fans before the game? They clocked one female Caps fan in the head. Now I've got my lucky puck, though.

A big THANK YOU to Coach Bruce Boudreau for having the ba**s to give a young rookie goaltender his chance and not worry about the criticism from the neihsayers. Thankfully, it worked out perfectly!!

Bradley made the amazing backhanded outlet on the boards to spring Fedorov for the GWG.

Bradley played great today, as well.
