Game 7: Penguins 6, Capitals 2

The Capitals' exhilarating and, at times, improbable postseason run came to an end tonight at Verizon Center in a 6-2 blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After rallying Monday night at Mellon Arena to force a Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series, the Caps returned home and opened the first period with a thud, falling behind by two goals scored just eight seconds apart. Coach Bruce Boudreau replaced goaltender Simeon Varlamov with Jose Theodore after Kris Letang made it 4-0 Pittsburgh in the second period, but Washington was unable to recover.

We'll have a wrap-up a bit later tonight and a look back at the Capitals' season tomorrow. In the meantime, tell us what you think:

Tarik had this one pretty easy-- he was probably able to do the game story 1/2 through the 2nd period...

Can't wait to find out what's up w/Green.

i thought it was quite amazing that the pens played penalty free hockey. not one.

I haven't had this feeling since 2001. I remember how much it sucks now. Until next season, with a year more experience under our belts for our young team.

Posted by: Raber | May 13, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Can we please quit complaining about penalties?

The season was definitely a step up - nobody thought we'd do so well this season and round 2 in the playoffs was just about right for a prediction at the start of the year. We were fortunate to get this far the way the team has been playing, as a team.

We suck - in this game. But the sun will come up for us & we will be back.
Congrats pinz but watch ur rearview mirror.

I'm really disappointed in tonight's game, but it's been a great season. Next season should be even better.

young teams get older but this team had a mix of veterans and youngsters that just got their butts kicked!!!!!!!!!absolutlely unacceptable effort for a game 7....this team needs some major changes

If anybody had any lingering hope for Theo, they should be hopeless now. He was his usual nervous, uneven self and this could have been the opportunity to show us that he was wrongly benched. He is history.

They are cheering the PENS and the heart of Crosby

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | May 13, 2009 9:29 PM

Nah, Ovechkin plays with his heart, Crosby plays with his vagina. Hey, you two have something in common after all!

Thanks for everything Tarik, Katie, Lindsay, Wise and Lacy. You kept us entertained and informed all season long.

I'm eager to read the epilogue. I know many guys played through pain and injury.

I'm also interested to read about team moves. The Caps are still building a Stanley Cup contender.

At any rate, pat yourselves on the back and get some rest. We'll need you back in force next October!

Definitely not a disappointing season, just wish the Caps could get the puck out of their own end. These are problems that Mcphee will address during the offseason, and with so much money coming off the books, I think the Caps can find some sort of steadying influence on the blue line. Commendable by the Caps to not lose control that third period and play with some honor. Also good to see some fans stay and show the Caps they appreciate what they accomplished this year. It's a bright future for our boys, and with good things happening in Hershey it only means better things for the franchise. GO CAPS!!!

It was a great season, but this game was really only a matter of time, there were hints of this all through the season. This last game leaves a bad taste in the mouth, especially since it's the Pens, what a time not to show up...

Oh well, we should be better next season, now I can concentrate on baseball...

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 13, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Better team won. Congrats to Pittsburgh.

I know that we don't have a great defense, but Pittsburgh doesn't either so I don't get how they made our offense look so terrible.

Guess how many periods we've outshot the Pens in out of 21 periods?

3 periods. 3 periods out of 21 periods that we've outshot them.

Even though the Caps lost, that was a great gesture by the fans to applaud the team. Being a Sens fan, I know how it feels to lose tough playoff series. Hang in there and support your team.

It was nice chatting with you all, even though I tried stirring the pot every now and then. Great coverage by the Post. Have a good one, everyone.

It's a bit of an empty feeling right now but future looks bright. We'll upgrade the D and get a Center and grinder and this team is right there.

Posted by: visionof75 | May 13, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Well, this game I did not see any blatant missed penalties this game as far at the Pens were concerned. Over the course of the series, yeah. I will say the first two penalties on us seemed to be a little weak although the crappy coverage by VS did not even replay either call.

It's hard to get calls when your D can't get the puck out of their zone for periods at a time!

I was not paying too much attention the 3rd period, but it seemed like Green finally got benched!!! A little too late, but absolutely necessary. Sometimes it's what have you done for me lately and Green was absolutely the worst player on either team this series to get regular playing mins (followed closely by Semin). He might as well had a Pens uni on. He was that bad!!!

Interesting that Locker & Joe B still think that goaltending is our Achilles hill because we lack an elite level veteran. I agree. We saw the limits of an inexperienced goaltender in the playoffs. The Pens aimed at solving him and succeeded at the most critical moment. The second goal set in motion our unravelling. No question in my mind. In game 6 Varly kept the deficit to 1 and we came back.

Now I am not saying I am disappointed in this season, but I tell you for dam* sure that I completely consider this Playoffs a failure. You do not make it to Game 7, and show up like that. An absolute joke, guys. I remain optimistic for so long, but the effort tonight was pitiful. Varlamov's glove is incredibly weak and shows why riding a rookie goaltender doesn't normally work out.

Quite a pitiful performance, and a complete embarrassment to themselves, BB, and us, the fans.

I look forward to an interesting off-season and hope to see us get our goaltending situation worked out as well as fix our blue line.

LETS GO CAPS!

A DISGUSTING, DISGRACEFUL, TOTALLY GUTLESS PERFORMANCE. I'm not surprised. too many wimps & wusps. The Flashs, Fedorovs, Kozlovs, and Potis. Just not very much DESIRE!! They didn't want it bad enough.
What's REALLY gonna tick me off is all of the "Apologists." you know the kind. "We had a GREAT season,' they'll say. "Something to "Build" on. Yeah, right. I've been hearing the same ole crap since the "74 - 75" season. That's THIRTY FIVE years SUCKERS.
I, along with a few others have said CONTINUALLY that gmgm is incapable of fielding a Stanley Cup winner. Too much glitz. Not enough testosterone. Too many Eric Fehrs, Flashs, and Kozlovs. But, George is the man who stood still AND DID NOTHING in March. His excuse being that he was unwilling to give up any of his prime "Prospects." I say, "Put Perrault, Borque, Laing, and Osala in the lineup. Get rid of the Schultzs, Flashs, Kozlovs, Fedorovs, Nylanders, and Fehrs. Gwet some guys that really WANT TO WIN. Not just skate atound and look pretty. Puckguru is going to go silent for quite a while now. I'm sick of these spineless, gutless, wimp LOSERS. Later........

P.S. Kudos to Tarik for this blog, and kudos to the Caps. All along, I've felt the Pens and Caps were the best 2 teams in the east. Lots to look forward to for both teams in the coming years.

I agree with everyone about what a fantastic season this has been. But I just can't get over the fact that the opportunity was there. We can all talk about how Pittsburgh has outplayed us through 6 games, but it was one game where the score was even and it was a best of one. It was there for the taking and if we played better we could've won.

Posted by: rachel216 | May 13, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Also, Crosby proves once again why he is the best center man playing the sport right now.

On the positive side, this was a good season for the Caps; just wished they didn't have to lose to the Penguins...AGAIN! But the team did better than expected and that's a good sign for next year.

LET'S GO WHOEVER PLAYS THE PENS NEXT!!!

Really hope it's the Blackhawks. Wonder how Bettman would feel about Toews and Kane hoisting a Stanley Cup before Golden Boy?

I appreciate what Varlamov did. He got us here. I am not blaming him at all. It was just the situation we were forced in...he did us proud, but like I said, it just proved why riding a rookie goal tender is usually not a good idea.

Storm rolled through my neck of the woods and took out the dish so I couldn't watch. I don't know whether to be furious for missing it, happy for missing it, or just plain ole depressed.

What to say? Sometimes you have to man (or woman) up and admit the other team got it done. No ref bashing tonight, no conspiracy theories, no nothing.

I'm trying to look at the bright side. I still feel like GMGM and Ted have given us a nucleus primed for a decade of exciting and important hockey games. This doesn't feel like the end of an era, just the end of a season. I don't want to think yet about what changes need to be made, but I'm still happy with the boys.

BTW, everybody PLEASE ignore any Pens fans that want to come on here and show lack of class. They will crawl back into their holes soon enough and go bother Bruins or Canes boards.

Why does everyone say we did better than expected??? We are the 2nd seed in the east and almost lost in the first round and did get outplayed most games in the second round. Yeah, we can score with the best of them and can get timely goals bc typically this team does not give up. But, I think the grind the Pens put on this team over the series finally broke them in game 7. Game 7 is not played in a vacuum. What happened before has an effect and the fore checking and grinding finally just broke the Caps back and Varly could not be the hero again.

The second goal was a little weak, but the other three were all on the D. Tap ins and blistering WIDE OPEN shots in perfect scoring positions on the ice. Can we clone Steckel and get about 2 more of him? That would help!!!

Can't hang this on Varlamov when:

a) Outshot almost 4-1 in the first period, FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT GAME.

b) Outshot something like 18 out of 21 regulation periods all series.

c) He outplayed MaF, hell, embarrassed him, for 6 straight games. If Caps can't win 4 of those despite that, so be it.

d) Pre-game showed the Crosby goal locations. Coming in, 6 of his 7 were within 5 feet of the crease. Someone should have hit the kid 4 games ago. Greenie was a -3 tonight.

My long final letter:

To my fellow BO (Before Ovie) Caps Fans- We are getting there. It has still been an impressive transformation considering where we were 2 years ago. Seriously. Tonight was an absolute embarrassment, no one will deny that. But we made it further in the playoffs than we have with this team. We took the next step. Last year we got out in the first round, this year the second. But in all three rounds this team has been in we made it to game 7, and proved that this team has the fight, they just need the experience to learn to keep up that fight. I'm confident they will learn. Round one last year, round two this year, I expect us to go further next year. With this experience, we will get there.

To the newer fans- First, unfortunately, welcome to the heartbreak the playoffs can issue (although you probably got it last year, not it has probably hit home that it happens a lot). Don't get too down though, look at the number of teams who don't even make it to the playoffs, and how many are left aft the second round. We are still among the elite. The playoffs are fickle, but hopefully you all love the team as much as we do and will stick around.

TO ALL OF THE FANS AT THE GAME: I became teary eyed twice. Once when they got up 4-0. The second was when you all got up with two minutes to go and cheered for our team. That meant more to me than anything. To know that the fans in VC were representing the rest of us, showing us that we love the regardless, meant so much to me. Thank you for being so classy and so supportive.

To those who voted that the whole season is now a failure because of the playoff season- you are either trolls or you don't know what you're talking about. If you are a Caps fan and voted that, look back at this amazing season, look at our team. I know when I look at them I still feel proud to be a Caps fan. I walked around NYC after we lost games (before we won the series), still wearing my Caps jersey. No loss or bad play could make me ashamed to be a Caps fan. If you don't feel pride being a Caps fan no matter what the scoreboard says, pick a different team. We will survive without you.

I love the Caps, and always will. We are on our way, improving every year. Unfortunately the deficits and mistakes that existed the whole playoff season finally caught up with us. But we will learn and we will get there. Keep the faith.

- Caps Fan for life.

PS- Hope the Pens gets demolished in the next round :)

@richmondphil

I know, I didn't clarify myself. I don't care if Carolina, Boston, Anaheim, Detroit, or Chicago beat the Pens, just as long as someone beats them. I would prefer the Blackhawks to win it all.

Great series, great season. Greenie will be back, stronger.

Crosby is fantastic. I have no qualm with officiating tonight. I do dislike Crosby complaining to officials after the highstick, asking for a double minor. He didn't even bleed. Either way, he played great.

Ovi deserves MVP because the Pens can win without Geno showing up. Caps win less with Ovi not showing up. Ovi therefore means more to his team, thus MVP.

It looked like Ovie was basically explaining the knee hit, looked like he did a side to side move like he was saying you went that way I went that way. There were several factors that contributed to this loss. Officiating was horrible and some key players did not perform. Those who refuse to see the one-sided officiating as a huge contributing factor have problems with reality and have issues dealing with authority figures. Green should've been scratched for the whole series. I don't understand why Bruce kept him in the lineup. Many goals against were scored while he simply stood and watched. Our only gratification I'll have now will be to watch the Pens get mauled by Carolina.

Anyone here that wants to have some perspective and not just throw their jersey on the floor and take a dump on it?

BB is our coach and I'm glad to have him. GMGM has built this team and I'm glad to have him. Just about everybody on this roster is a player I'm happy going into battle with. It was a stinker. Don't read more into it than that.

Posted by: JS26121820 | May 13, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

It was a great year...the team perhaps overachieved which lead to incredibly high expectations.

In the end, I think they just ran our of gas. I really think that the combination of so many games in so few days and the high number of penalties we took, we just wore out.

One last note...when I was in NY City in December I talked to manager at the NHL store. The store was full of Penguins and Red Wing stuff. There were very few items related to the caps besides a few Ovie Jersey's. When he found out I was a Caps fan he immediately talked about how great we had it as fans with an exciting young team (he was a life long Ranger fan he felt like they were in a real mess). But he said something interesting. He said he could not figure out why the league was pushing the Penguins so hard and not the Capitals. He felt it was almost a disservice to the league. I though about that a lot during this series. The significantly discrepant number of calls against us, the questionable long suspension of Brasher (and none for the Carolina player), the abuse our goalie took (in both rounds), etc. As a fan, I hope that the league will take a long look at what happened in this series and learn from it and work to making sure they support all teams as equally as possible.

There is a great team in Washington and I think as hard as tonight is, the Caps will be back!

Thanks for a great season!

Crosby deserved the #1 star, he was fantastic. (Maybe he can teach the Caps something, like crash the net, every goal he's scored has been right in front of the net.) But nonethless, he was the best player on either team for this entire series. The most consistent player and made an impact in all 7 games. I like his game a lot. If only he would quit whining, I think I'd like him.

Well, he's got until September to recover.

From the last post:

They're still young, people. Settle down. Nobody ever planned for this to be the year they would go all the way. They're better than they were last year, and that's what matters as long as they can keep the progression going. We have our goalie for the future and a solid offense - all we really need is a hard-nosed bastard who will teach these kids how to drive the net and one rock-solid blueliner. There are good years ahead, and cheers to a great season.

richmondphil- Look, I am devastated too, but I would be more impressed if you named a jersey of a player who didn't play on the Stanley Cup losing team. How about Bobby Gould, Dave Christian, or Bengt Gustaffson?

Posted by: Satts | May 13, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

That game was great the first 5 minutes, then it turned brown. I am happy that they did great stuff in the regular season, but they coasted into a post-season playing crap hockey and they left playing the same hockey. The hockey that propelled them to a 108 point season is not the hockey they played in the first 75% of the season.

There are many reasons why the Caps lost this series and none of them include "the refs". It is a shame that they put this kind of performance in for a game 7. It is downright disgraceful IMHO.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | May 13, 2009 10:11 PM | Report abuse

The Pens won because they have better role players and defensemen. The Caps just need to find a few of those and it shouldn't be too hard. I know this was an ugly loss but you people should SETTLE DOWN!!! I've been watching this team for 25 years and I've seen some tough losses. But this one isn't too tough because the better team won. The Caps need to find guys like Orpik, Scuderi and Gill of the Pens. If McPhee can't do then HE should be fired.

Posted by: joek443 | May 13, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Too bad it had to end this way. Was really impressed with the fans at the game tonight. Pens were the better team and deserved to win. They had a better game plan also, so that helps. I still like Bruce as a coach, but I think we might need a better defensive coach (as well as better defensive players). I also think Shero is better than McPhee, but I'm not for getting rid of McPhee.

Rock the Red!!! The Caps are dead!!!
I am here to simply rub it in your faces, your boys crapped the bed. Call me classless, tell me I am just kicking you while you are down and I will tell you I am acting just like your "leader" Ovechkin.

Truth of the matter is...Justice has been served, Ovechkin is not a leader. You saw a real leader on this ice tonight, #87. If you can't see the difference you are blind. Case in point, Crosby scores on the breakaway, does he show boat it up?? No, a fist pump and that is it. It's called class and being a true professional. Ovechkin will never learn that show boating it up and taking runs on people always will come back to bite you in the end.

Now you see why Sidney Crosby IS the best player in the world. 100% complete player.

You have been elimin8ted!!!! See ya LOSERS!!

Look, Crosby is great, but I really wish just one time he would quit complaining and just play the game.

No one else bugs the refs in that situation and gets a double minor out of it. There was no blood. He is the only player that can persuade the refs like that.

I just think its pathetic.

Congrats to the Pens, they played great. I love how Malkin plays the game. But with guys like Crosby, Kunitz, and Orpik, I just cant never for them.

We're on the same wavelength. I don't know about you guys but the loss to Philly last year hurt more than this does. That game stuck in my craw all year and I don't think I really got over it until we beat the Rags a couple weeks ago. It also hurt me a lot more when we were thoroughly outclassed by the Wings in '98. That was a HARSH smack of reality at the time.

This was the worst Caps game of the series. I'm disappointed how they played tonight but as they say you play as well as the opposing team allows you and to be honest the Pens controlled the game from the beginning. The Caps are still learning how to play in the playoffs and I hope the next season they will get to at least the conference finals. GO CAPS!

lol..some Caps fans in here are as soft as our D! Yeah, great season and mostly a great series, but it was not good enough and the Pens badly outplayed us at times this series.

So, yeah, were going to be around for a long time, but in case you have not noticed so will the Pens. Either learn and get better or go home again next year. McPhee has some work to do especially on the blue line. Green, don't know his story, but he was beyond bad and was more responsible with his chronic turnovers for this series loss than anyone!!!!

Hard to imagine that a team can come out in game 7 at home with that crowd and put up that performance. I coach 12 year old girls soccer and I wouldn't stand for that kind of effort from them let alone a bunch of guys making millions. Are the Penguins good? Sure. Were they better than they were the rest of the series? Can't see it. Was it Varly's fault? Hard to imagine that when we are playing in our house and we get outshot by 12 in the first period. Just doesn't fly with me. I have to wonder whether Green's shoulder was hurt because he just never looked like himself. Semin was simply awful the entire series (save game 6). Laich was a 20 goal guy all year and didn't do anything this series. Other than Ovie, Backstrom and Steckel (and Kozlov and Semin in 6) there was no offense. Erskine is the only real man-up defender they have. I like Poti, Pothier, etc., but they aren't cup quality defenders. I'd rather have seen Alzner and Sloan playing. Finally, I know they were down, but in the second and third period if I were a CAP I'd have been hitting anything moving in a Penguins jersey. Just didn't see enough of that for my liking. Wish BB had played Brashear. At least someone would have gotten a good old fashioned ass-kicking (preferably Semin)

Yes, it was an ugly loss but NO, it wasn't so tough because the better team won. The Caps losing to the Rangers in the playoffs in 1986 when they were more than 40 points better was a TOUGH loss. This team has a few holes to fill but the important thing is they have a very good group of young star players. The future is bright for this team so SETTLE DOWN!!!

I am a big Caps fan and am pleased with the season. Was it a success though as the Tarik question above asks? Did the San Jose Sharks think their season was good after winning the most points and then losing in round one? Fact is we played 14 playoff games and did not make it to the 3rd round. We screwed up bad in the playoffs with a sour taste from losing the first 2 games of round 1. Then taking all the penalties that killed us against the Pens. The bright spot is we were getting better - but be careful accepting that we are almost there. We are not - if we think we are then we may be the 2010 version of the Sharks. I know we will make the playoffs - but I want it all - still> Lets Go Caps.

This loss will sting, and it should. Hope the feeling sinks in with the core of this team. Can't even begin to comprehend what happened here tonight, but some guys need to take long looks in the mirror.

Green appeared to be playing with one arm this entire series. Will be interesting to see if there's any revelations on what his story was. And if he was really hurt, it begs the question as to whether he should have been out there at all.

That all said, I do think better days are ahead, but the mix has to change. More grinders up front (bye bye Nyls, Kozlov, etc) and nastiness on the blue line. Scuderi and Gill I believe are both UFA's, I think one of them would fit in nice here.

For me personally, I have to say the highlight was taking my 6-year old to his first two NHL games. NOTHING tops that in my book.

I tend to read more than post, but I enjoyed everyone's insights. To all the loyal fans and posters, have a great summer and look forward to 09-10!

One final point. Anyone saying, "we are learning how to play in the playoffs" is smoking something I'd like some of. There is only one way to play and that is with heart, guts, determination and balls. They did that in Game 6. To let down the hometown crowd in 7 with a piss poor performance was WAY more about them than about the Penguins.

ModestProposal-Agreed. This is a very young team. Everyone talks about how great the Pens and the Red Wings are but the Pens are mortgaging the future with rental players and the Red Wings are a much older, more mature team. Of course there needs to be changes, like a true 2nd line center and real defensive defenseman, but I truly believe this team could be the Red Wings of the future.

What this loss shows is that we don't have all the pieces in place as Ted sometimes says. We need to get tougher across the board. It starts with Defense. They better bring in a veteran defenseman that can help these young dmen mature properly. Too much room in our zone for the pens. This was all series long. Their offensive chances exceeded ours but Varly kept us in several games.

It's time to realize that the trade deadline is set up to not only unload salary but to help galvinize a winner. Shero knew it when he went out and picked up Billy Guerin and Chris Kunitz. Sure, last year Mcphee picked up Huet, Cooke and Federov and it sparked us for a huge end run. All said, a trade at the deadline for a Recchi, Guerin or Pauhlsson type would have helped our grit and solidified our team a bit more. It would also put a spark in guys like Fleischman and Fehr letting them know that they are not subject to the bench.

We had a great year and there are good things to come. Now the Architect of this team must fill in the holes that will elevate us to Penguins, Red Wings level

Do you know how bad the Wizards sucked this year? If the Wizards made it this far in the playoffs, I'd be ecstatic! I'm a Wiz fan, but I'm a Caps fan as well.

The Caps ain't losers that's for sure. This has been a very good season for them. If they can learn from this, maybe they can win the Stanley Cup next season.

Pitt out shot us by so much. The Caps need to get some players that can get some shots on goal. See ya next season.

Richmond Phil. Disagree on Laich. He worked hard -- yes. But as a 20 goal guy, he needed to provide secondary scoring. Too many pucks off his stick. Mishandles, etc. Agree that the 3rd line was the one that worked and created energy, but Brooks needs to be a scorer as well. Didn't happen. Still a great player -- just not his best in the post season.

Hey BernieWolfeFan, I think its called gamemanship and leadership. All your team does is show boat, show boat, and more show boating. The hat trick celebration was over the tope, hats kept coming on the ice. Crosby, fully realizing we were still in the game, wanted to get the game going again ASAP. Its not whining, it's being the captain of a team you freaking moron. You should talk about whining, that is all the caps did this whole series: ice conditions, penalties, back to back games, on and on... Your team deserved to lose, Ovechkin deserved to be one upped by Crosby, JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED. Your team choked, the "Most Valuable Primate" the Great Ape, #8 CHOKED!

There is so much to celebrate and look forward to. True Caps fans stand up and clap for their team. Bandwagoners whine and complain and throw beer bottles on the ice in a temper tantrum. I'm glad to be the former and I can't wait for next year. Go Caps!

How can this not be a disappointing season to Caps fans? You lost in the second round as a 2 seed. You lost to a team you had a 2-0 lead on. You lost with home ice advantage. You lost game seven at home. You lost with the number one goal scorer this year. If you are not disappointed then you really are demonmstrating a complete lack of knowledge regarding the great sport of hockey. But I could have figured that out after spending a game in your stands on Saturday night. At least you got Ovie, I guess.

Things we need to win the Cup..

- Jose needs to be sent on the first bus out of town.....not sure what I think of a Varly/Brent Johnson tandem for next year....Varly is the real deal but a whole season as the number 1 guy might be a stretch....
- 2 big D-men are needed....a big nasty, physical guy in the mold of Erskine and then a solid puck-mover with...
- a 3rd and 4th line that can produce some offense

I love the Caps and watch every game but let's face it, the Pens deserved to win the series.......

Don't forget this one boys....we'll see these guys again....don't forget about this one.....we've got something to prove next year..........Don't think the Pens will want to meet us the playoffs next year......

ditto schrute...

if you're a fan of this team for 25 years like I am, this really wasn't a tough loss because right now the Pens are better than the Caps. If it wasn't for Varly this series would have ended in 5 or 6 games. Losing to the Rangers in 1986 was brutal, this really wasn't. They just need to fill a few small holes, that's it.

You're obviously either an immature Pitt fan or just trying to pick a fight. Many will say that one of the youngest teams in the NHL being able to make the #2 seed is a great season in its own. Honestly, the way we played, Pitt could've taken the series in four games. I think the determination and edginess of this team kept them alive. Hey, Pitt beat a rookie goalie just called up from Hershey, and a couple of minor league players just called up as well. I like the prospects. I like next year. If we get to Round 3, I'll be pleased. Caps '09-'10!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oneal, your "Scott Stevens" joke isn't funny anymore. Can it.

Have I missed something, what curse of Scott Stevens?? LOL Stevens left because he wanted a fresh start after the rape allegations. I don't think it was about the money he got from the Blues.

Schrute:

You have not cornered the market on young players, the Hawks are on their way to the conference finals in a better conference and with a much younger team. The Pens are also going to a conference finals with a young team (again). So is Boston. The fact that your dumbass coach decided to play a rookie with 6 games under his belt (a move that may have gotten you past terrible New York) is not our fault. We beat him, and your over paid "veteran" Jose. The bottom line is you have a one man team. Ovie. Best shooter ever period. No joke. The joke is his supporting cast. Is federov young? What happened to Semin? He was good at running his mouth early this year but no goals in a 7 game series. Where did mike green go? Good luck with that and have fun bowing out next year early too.

The Hawks have very good young players and none of them are OV. I sure hope that you're not in crisis management. The Caps lost to the better team, that simple. It happens. They're a young team that needs a few small holes to fill. The nucleus is already there. I've been watching Caps hockey for 25 years and God knows I've seen some ungly/heartbeaking losses but you know what? this wasn't one of them and I am very optimistic about the future of this team. So should every other Caps fans.

Hey Caps_r_,

Were you there that night? I was, and there was no overt delay in the game. You are the "freaking moron" if you can't see that was typical Crysby. Being a captain my @$$. Oooh, ooooh, the hats, no not the hats. Geez...

rachael216...you are obviously a "hockey" fan, not just a Caps fan...and i am impressed...

This was a FANTASTIC series...with the 3 BEST players in the world... I really hope that the fans in the rest of the country will realize how valuable sidney crosby is to his team and the nhl. Like Ovie, he plays 100% every shift, every game. Crosby is the REAL deal, like it or not caps fans. The Caps have a bright future, much like the penguins.

This game could just as easily have gone the other way, some games just happen that way.

I was impressed with the fans at the arena cheering the team (which they should have), unlike some punks on here saying they sucked and to blow up the chemistry of the team.

Like I've said before on here, the Pens were just a little bit deaper and Stanley Cup ready.

Also, a side note, Boudreau got outcoached tonight, Scuderi, Gill, and Stahl's line were out against Ovie and Backs almost every shift, the caps should have avoided that at home.

GREAT season Caps, you will be back to contend again next year.

Go Pens.

not going to the net for one period is player's fault, not going to the net for the bulk of 2 playoff series is a coaching issue. too many long bombs. they were basically bank passes from the blue line to the opposing team using the oposition goalie as the board.

hopefully the cap will understand why the fans hate seeing the pens in the playoffs and not let them take it to 7 next year.
