Godfrey Signs Entry Level Deal

The Capitals announced the signing of 19-year-old prospect Josh Godfrey, their 34th overall pick in June, to a three-year entry level contract. A swift-skating defenseman with a hard shot, Godfrey led all Ontario Hockey League defensemen with 24 goals last season. This season, he ranks third among defensemen in goals with seven through 18 games for Sault Ste. Marie.

I'm told his NHL salary will be as follows: $637,500 next season, $687,500 in 2009-10 and $687,500 in 2010-11.

Man that's a lot of money for a 19 year old.....I wish I was bigger, faster and could shoot a puck 102 mph.

It really won't make any difference who they sign. 3 goals in 10 minuets tonight. At least i didn' have to waste more then 30 minuets of my time tonight & thank goodness, the next game is mercifully blacked.

That's also more than an "entry level" contract. And, he must really be burning up the OHL to jump to NHL. There are so few kids this age that can make that kind of jump. Especially as a D-man.

Can he complete a pass? Can he get the puck into the zone without going off-side?

If so he's got a spot waiting for him on this team right now!

I've never called for Hanlon to be fired but If the Caps lose in Atlanta, they'll be last in the East. Tough to keep you job that way. And if he does go, will Ted let GMGM hire ANOTHER coach?

Tarik, anyone,

Can you explain how this entry level contract works? Godfrey isn't getting the money now, right? Once he plays for the Caps, the figures are his salary for the first three years? Does this deal give an indication that they are going to move him up to the big leagues sooner than later? I mean, is Alzner already signed too? I'm confused. :-)

Finally - our problems for this year should be now behind us with this crucial signing. McPhee saves the day! And just think, we've been all over him lately - he's on it people, clearly - this team has been extremely depleted of future talent and those holes have been exploited recently.

Posted by: McPhee-next coach | November 5, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Same old crap, only it only lasted about 5 minuets. At that point Jurcina thought that the ref was blind & completely wrapped his arm around Carolina player right in front of him. Just plain stupidity. after that, the Caps crapped out. At least I only wasted 10 minuets (game time) of my evening.

I wonder if he's got a shot at coming to DC... Lord knows we need the help.

Speaking of which, pathetic game.

I just hope Hanlon won't use tonight's game to say, "I told you so" to everyone with the Ovie-Nyls-Backs line: they certainly didn't get a whole lot of chance to shine.

I'm also looking forward to listening to the game tomorrow night, given that Vs. couldn't be bothered to do a local nicety and broadcast our game for us. But, to be honest, if they play the way they did tonight, i may not feel like watching anyway.

Fire Hanlon, NOW. This team is playing far below its potential, even with the injuries to Semin, Poti, and Clark. There are good coaches available: Quinn, Hartley, & esp. Burns. Give GMGM a pink slip, too. Did anyone notice that GMGM bypassed the Ducks coach, Randy Caryle, who was in the Caps system in Portland.

Should Olie have been pulled after he allowed the 4th puck get past him in the second period? Or after the 3rd in the first?

Can't we use some of that money on a veteran player that can SKATE and SCORE? Better yet, invest in a coach that knows what the heck he is doing. Not sure if you all heard the broadcast last night, but did you hear Joe Beninati repeat Glen Hanlon's quote about the team? It went something like this..."I'm not worried about the slumps, I just want our team to be at least 10 games over 500 at some point" How in the world are you going to get 10 games over 500 if you can't get out of your slumps?

A swift skating defenseman with a hard shot and a league leading 24 goals, huh? My question is: can he play defense? Can he stop opposing forwards? Or is he a 4th forward on the ice? It would be nice to have a defenseman that can play D well, maybe lay some big hits, cover a 2 on 1, clear the front of the net, hold a few forwards off the scoresheet. So far, we have a bunch of guys that can't.
And they can't seem to score much either. Two shutouts in two games. More puck moving defensemen please!!

Instead of worrying about trades, GMGM needs to find a new coach fast and one that can stop the bleeding fast. I know that Ted usually likes to protect his coaches but he needs to protect his investment in this team. Ovie, will eventually be gone if he does not hurry up and right the ship and that would be a darn shame. Why would he want to sign a new deal with the CAPS when he can go north and be treated like GOD. He will never breakthrough like that here in Redskins land and what reason does he have to stay if the team is a loser.

At least last year, we had until late December to enjoy Caps hockey. This year, the joy didn't even last a month. This is just so sad. After all the hype all summer, we are already out of it before November rolls around.

Atlanta fires it's coach, now they have the same record as us...so why do we still have our coach???

How's the draft picks next year? We might have a huge chance of getting first pick. Let's all forget this season already and focus on the draft. It's the only way to keep from killing oneself...
