Gordon Injured

As you probably saw in the update on my previous post, Boyd Gordon is listed in the lineup but did not take a shift in the first period. I just talked to GM George McPhee and he confirmed that Gordon suffered an injury in warm-ups. McPhee also said he would provide a more detailed update after the game.

Just when we thought it was okay to breathe easy. Warm-ups? Really??

Is there no end to our injuries?

Posted by: cbs75 | January 9, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

JMU,
Thanks for the heads up matey. I would have been chatting away to myself all night over there.

Bad news for El Fatty.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Is it just me, or are the refs a little quick with their whistles tonight?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Semin's gonna score. I feel it in my Zamboni.

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

good job drawing the penalty.

we need to score on this one.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 9, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

grr.. this Mason kid is really freakin good...

Posted by: dmwechs1 | January 9, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Brooks needs to plant his ask in front of Mason. This is just ridiculous.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Sweet. 5 on 3.

Do it now!!!

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

ok... 5 on 3... maybe we can sneak one by him...

Posted by: dmwechs1 | January 9, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Big chance now - get some traffic in front of Mason the Robot!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

grr that was a very sloppy 5-3... no puck mvt at all

Posted by: dmwechs1 | January 9, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Ovie with two terrible passes to Semin on that 5-3. Handcuffed him twice.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Sure could have used Nyls on that 5-3.

Posted by: atybat | January 9, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

I'm so glad my neighbors aren't back yet. I think I've yelled about 8 times already.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Its about time we went shorthanded, it might be the only way we score against this guy!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 9, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Damn. If the Caps go down 0-2 against this Mason kid, it might be over.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 9, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

A shorty would be sporty.

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

uh oh

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

....

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

*&%$@£$"!!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

D'oh!!! Caps are just getting outworked out there. Laich, Clark, someone(!) needs to get real traffic in front of Mason.

Posted by: geauxcaps | January 9, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

and we had just started the "LETS GO CAPS!"...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 9, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Emotional let down from Philly and looking ahead to Montreal. Columbus just doesn't get the blood rushing, eh?

Posted by: geauxcaps | January 9, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

sigh...

Posted by: richmondphil | January 9, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Bruce really doesn't want to coach at the ASG?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Need to start the 3rd w/an early fight to spark this team. Columbus has plenty off goons on ice to accommodate.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 9, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

heres hoping to a 3rd period mason breakdown and one of those amazing 3rd period caps comeback.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 9, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

I would feel better if we lost to a better team, and not a team inspired by...GOD KNOWS WHAT...with a goalie that looks like he could dominate us for his career!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 9, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Is CBJ a bunch of blind squirrels or what?

I say this one goes to OT and Ovie puts his stamp on it.

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

2nd period was pretty unbearable to watch. Yeah, Caps got shots, but I didn't see much traffic. And, we're getting outworked. Compared to Columbus' intensity, it just doesn't look like Caps are all that hungry for the win.

Posted by: elicea | January 9, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Hands up who's glad Mason plays in the Central and not South East?

*raise hand*

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Can we rent Tomas Holmstrom for the third period? He'd get Mason off his game in no time!

Posted by: geauxcaps | January 9, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

*raises hand, too*
Maybe its just where I sit when I'm at the VC, but I never see as many kids at the games than I do when I watch the games on CSN. Do the CSN camera guys hunt them out, or am I not paying attention?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Alex! Geez.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

I have no idea why that was called on ovechkin. that was ridiculous

Posted by: oo7 | January 9, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

I wonder what a possession player like Nylander would do in this situation...

Posted by: Section117 | January 9, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Arrrggh, that was the chance!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

It's over! There is no way the Caps will ever score against this Mason guy! 2 goals is way too much to overcome against him considering he has allowed "0" so far against the Caps. He may win the game, but I will give Mason the Jim Carey Curse RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

Posted by: JohnWWW | January 9, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Bad news bears

Posted by: MFab12 | January 9, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Still not giving up completely, but it just seems like it may not be our night, tonight.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Semin has been a bit selfish on a few plays in the past few games? I've seen him holding onto the puck way too long, trying to attain a better shooting lane, when he should have passed the puck instead.

Posted by: elicea | January 9, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

that was just retarded.
im done with this game.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 9, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

This goalie has made a deal with the dehbowl!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 9, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

I just ABHOR the idea of this guy having two shutouts against us in our BREAKTHROUGH season...thats like...bad

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 9, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

I've got some good news though. I just saved a bunch....okay, sorry. Speaking of bears, Hershey up 5-1 on Houston with 11 and change left. Varlamov with 20 saves thus far. Goals by Osala, Giroux, Gordon, Joudrey, & Bouchard. Lots of fighting majors, Varly with a delay of game penalty in the 1st.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Its time to go ALL OUT!!! Whats the diff between 2-0 or 12-0, get a guy in front and go all out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 crossbars.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 9, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

@jmu_capsgirl

brutal. jinxed. the chemistry fizzled. I'm surprised bbopted to do that at home.

Posted by: oo7 | January 9, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

If Mason keeps playing like this he could win the Calder and the Vezina...he stole this game for them.

Posted by: reesem37 | January 9, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

LOUD NOISES!! I'm confused. Why are you yelling? Yeah, she's at the game, most of the people who comment here are.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

too many passed that just missed the tape and had to be settled down - gave the CBJ D time to adjust.
on to montreal to start a new streak

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 9, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Seems Caps packed up early for tomorrow. Just didn't seem like they wanted the win all that much. Oh well. As much as I don't like it, they were due for a lost. Props to Columbus. They played really well, and, basically, outworked Caps, tonight... I bet Mason wishes he played Caps 82 times per season. He seems to know something about our team.

Posted by: elicea | January 9, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Can we trade Theo for Mason? C'mon Columbus... we'll be your friend...

Posted by: TheSkyIsntFalling | January 9, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Steckel's miss and three or more posts gave Mason the shutout. Columbus's offense had quick, accurate passes. They had good team defense. Their D swarmed the puck; it seemed there were three Blue Jackets around whatever Caps' player had the puck the entire game.

Then the Caps finished with stupid penalties.

Time for the Caps to start another winning streak.

Joe B

Posted by: rw-c | January 9, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Mason played phenomenal. Probably one of the key reasons why we couldn't score. Defensively, I thought the Caps played terribly. Jose Three or More needs to stop flopping around on the ice, get off his knees, and learn how to move post to post. Yes he played great against Philly but he is never consistent. I'm tired of BB giving him chance after chance to prove himself as a #1 goalie. When is Johnny going to have a chance? (other than the 7-1 game in philly, johnny has played very consistent)

The caps looked very out of sync tonight and couldn't connect passes. I also don't understand why BB would scratch fehr when he has been playing so well recently. No, he is not scoring points but he has been playing very aggressive and going hard to the goal. Eventually, he'll start getting the points

Posted by: ILikeLaich | January 9, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I suppose now I can make a joke about how Boyd Gordon is obviously the heart, soul, and backbone of this team.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Two bad games in a row..... VERY lucky to beat the Flyers. Is this the beginning of the end?

Posted by: waldmant | January 9, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

"Is this the beginning of the end?"
Dude, go somewhere. It could be much worse.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

bruce, dont try to explain it in the Press Conf. he is the next official "CAPS KILLER"

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 9, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

hey jmu did you go to highschool in virginia?

Posted by: reesem37 | January 9, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

that's not a joke, jmu o_O

Posted by: honed | January 9, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Now what would make you think that?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

I was just curious cause I went to high school in northern VA and knew some kids that went to JMU.

Posted by: reesem37 | January 9, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Oh, yeah, I went to HS south of Richmond. JMU is about 48% Jersey kids, 50% VA kids, and 2% that you wonder how in the heck they ended up in Harrisonburg.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Yea...I hear ya. That's a pretty fun school to party at; lot's of house parties there it seems, I don't think greek life is that huge there.

Posted by: reesem37 | January 9, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

I said it before, and I'll say it again. IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!! you'd think a man of Bruce Boudreau's acumen and experience would know that. apparently not.
For the life of me, I still can't fogure out bb's fascination with Tomas Fleischman(sp). He's physically weak, by NHL standards. Certainly not an overwhelming shot by any means. Completely unaggresive with absolutely no "Edge" to his game. Basically he's an undersized finesse player. Wow! That's exactly what the Caps need, another finesse player, huh?
There's NO WAY flash is an upgrade over Eric Fehr. Simply no way.
The real point is that winning is a habit. you find a combination that works, YOU STICK WITH IT! That is, of course, unless you are attempting to reinvent the wheel, or something. Me thinks THAT was bb's problem today. Basically, he fell victim to doing the same thing he's accused several victims of the team of doing. BEING TOO CUTE!! Stop it, Bruce. Stop being "Cute." you ride a winning combination until the wheel fall off the cart. That's "Winning Strategy 101," Bruce. Obviously you've failed to read it.

Posted by: Puckguru | January 9, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Yep, not a whole lot of bars and clubs. All apartment & house parties. Greek isn't huge. They're here, but most of the frat "houses" are on the other side of campus as the upperclassmen apartment area. A bunch of the frats just have apartments that stay within the brotherhood. Most of the sororities are still on campus. Not my crowd, really.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Obviously, with all his decades of playing and coaching, we need Puckguru to replace Coach B and we'd better do it NOW!

Sheesh.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Greg, how long before Cheef shows up?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Caps will play better tomorrow night, they always seem to get beat by the weaker teams but show up against the good ones. Oh well, can't win em' all, 19-2-1 at home is pretty good if you ask me at this point. Boudreau will light a fire under them for tomorrow night. Peace...I'm out.

Posted by: reesem37 | January 9, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

LOL @ jmu's humor tonight, especially the "loud noises" comment. I'll have to remember that one next time someone inundates me with their CAPS LOCK key.

Glad I didn't go to the game tonight. Oh right. I'm in Tennessee and didn't have a choice. :)

Hopefully UK Dave didn't stay up to catch this disaster.

Posted by: Cerealman | January 9, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, I have to confess to having killed more of that bottle of wine than I meant to. (All of it :-P) And I think the "Loud Noises" thing is a Steve Carrell thing. Maybe "40 year old virgin?"
honed, I wasn't ignoring your comment, but having spent the past month with my parents, I was trying to decide if I was being scolded for telling that guy to go suck on a lemon, or something about my Gordo comment.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

Mason is phenomenal, that's all. He frustrated and embarrassed an offensive powerhouse -- with 12 shots from Ovechkin alone. And he is the most consistent goalie in the NHL (other than at the very beginning of the season). But this should not immediately make us doubt the Caps.

@ ILikeLaich

How can you blame Theodore and think that Johnson is the answer? Theo had a save percentage of over 90% in the last 5 games (last one was over 97%). I am pretty sure that Johnson has never had a consistent high performance streak like this. He was in goal during our last game against Columbus when we were also shut out.

Let's face it, the boys just didn't get the job done against Mason tonight. He got the win for CBJ. Hats off to him.

Posted by: caraveli | January 9, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

jmu_capsgirl

Hmm...maybe tonight around midnight when no one is around to rebut.

It was a nice ride of 7 games.

I'm waiting for the JT bashers to come out. Not sure how he could have done anything better. Deflection, rebound, and screened. They'll say he should have anticipated the deflection, should have put the rebound in the corner, and had his xray glasses on so he could see through the guys in front of him.

Caps played mostly well. Refs bite. 2 bad calls on AO, one on Green. But we did have a few breakdowns.

And no one wanted to be in front of Mason. A kid that hot, you have to have a Philly mentality in front. Crash and bang. Get him off his game.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

New post. Gordo out with back spasms (again).

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

"Loud Noises" comes from Anchorman -- when the group is in the news director's office, loudly confronting him about hiring a woman.

And obviously, if I would read more carefully, I'd realize UK Dave was party to this (early morning) disaster.

At least there's a game tomorrow night. Without Mason in goal.

Posted by: Cerealman | January 9, 2009 10:31 PM | Report abuse

Ah yes, I remember now. Wrong comedian.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Sadly, there are some on this board that simply refuse to "Get it." WINNING IS 95% MENTAL. If you do it long enough, it becomes a habit. A reflex, if you will. You come to the rink KNOWING you're going to win. Not winning, never enters your mind. You and your boys are going to win. It's as simple as that.
But, when some genius decides to change a winning combination, that IMMEDIATELY throws everything out of sync. You lose that swagger. That special "Something" that's brought you so much success. You may not be able to quite put your finger on it, but YOU KNOW something ain't kosher. Things just don't "Feel" right. It throws you off. And, BOOM!! The magic is gone. It disappears. Things which had come so easily, become near impossible to achieve. Soon, you start to press. Which only compounds your frustration, and makes things worse. THAT'S THE WAY IT GOES.
Obviously, there are some on this board unfamiliar with this phenomenon. This basic truth. That's understandable. Even forgivable. But, when you've coached professionally for 30 something years, it's NOT FORGIVABLE to make blunders as basic as that. Really. It can't be any more basic than this. "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, FOR christ's sake, DON'T FIX IT. P e r i o d !!!

Posted by: Puckguru | January 9, 2009 11:53 PM | Report abuse

@Puckguru
I think I trust Bruce's decisions over your observations. Flash has 12 goals, and has a very good shot. He has clicked well with the team/linemates prior to his illness. You always put in your top line-up.
