Gordon Sidelined Tonight

Fourth-line center Boyd Gordon (sore back) won't suit up tonight against the Sharks, Coach Bruce Boudreau said. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Keith Aucoin, who was called up earlier today just in case.

Aucoin will center the third line, while David Steckel will drop to the fourth line.

Boudreau is hoping Aucoin can spark the third line and that Steckel might get the fourth line going offensively. The bottom six, as you've probably noticed, has not been very productive thus far. In fact, with Gordon out, the six forwards on the third and fourth lines have combined for exactly four points (a goal and three assists).

"They've got to bear down," Boudreau said. "I think they are capable of scoring. They just have to think that they're not just out there to check. It's why we don't have an enforcer. We want to roll four lines that can play. We believe once they start scoring -- even if it's chipping in one goal a game between the six of them -- will be the difference between a win and loss on most nights."

So maybe an end of regulation not on the PK?

Posted by: Chad8 | October 15, 2009 5:27 PM | Report abuse

some are still over looking the problem...the defense. the offense, whether it is highly skewed to the first two lines, is clicking. the defense is out of position, struggling to clear the zone for long periods, and taking penalties (greener).

bb needs to focus on fixing the d-men first...i guess bob woods has not clicked yet as the new asst. coach (focusing on defense)...

good luck tonight...toguh task ahead. GO CAPS!!!

That would be good.

I'm glad Gordon is sitting tonight, for a couple of reasons. One, I'd rather he was healthy, if his back is indeed troubling him, and two, the late-game penalties are KILLING us!

Posted by: irockthered | October 15, 2009 5:30 PM | Report abuse

I almost feel sorry for some of the players.

Boudreau is flirting with disaster.

The Caps are a 2 line team, nice job "coach"

Half an hour until I head out of here and make my way to the Verizon Center... hopefully the Caps will get it together tonight! I want to see a win!

It's a flat out joke right now that they won't let nyls play

Posted by: ThePat | October 15, 2009 5:43 PM | Report abuse

1 Goal a game between the 6 of them would equal to 13.7 goals on average per player for the season from our bottom six players. That's wishful thinking. If that were to happen we would not lose many games.

Believe me I would love to see that happen. But Bradley, Steckel, Gordon, Laing, Clark all have to average between 13-14 goals for the season that is a little too unrealistic.

I think its a bit more realistic to expect 2 out of 3 games which would put at average about 9 goals per player.

Posted by: lightshow | October 15, 2009 5:44 PM | Report abuse

ThePat,

I agree. It's ridiculous that they won't even give him a shot. It might be what a line needs or, on the other hand, it may prove that Nyls isn't as able or prepared to play under this system as he thinks/says he is. However, he deserves a chance. To me, it's a complete waste of resources. The Caps are not making themselves look good by punishing him because he won't play in Russia or elsewhere. Who can blame Nyls?

Nice backcheck Fehr! Way to skate back like you mean it. Gotta love that guy. What a great feeling it is when you're a step behind a guy and he gets a pass and skates right in to score. What's our record with Fehr in the lineup? Oh yeah, nevermind.

Posted by: pokerfaceI208 | October 15, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

They have to be frustrated, I know I am. With all that PP time, you MUST close that period with AT LEAST A LEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IF NOT A FRICKIN 2 GOAL LEAD!!!!

ALL YOUR SKILL GUYS ON THE ICE....FOR LIKE....THE ENTIRE PERIOD!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 15, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

I ain't being a Debby Downer after only one period, but I have some real concerns because the Caps didn't capitalize on their PP chances, and you know the Sharks will get theirs in the next two periods. I guess it's the Caps PK that concerns me from here on in this contest. Not sure what's ailing this PP unit. I think a lot of it is that these shots from the point aren't going on net.

Credit MUST be given to Knuble, primary assist on both ovie goals.

Brendan Morrison is doing nothing but picking up points and making his presence felt wherever BB puts him.

Dont call it a comeback...?

Too bad that JT got injured but what happens if you back-up goaly gets injured before the end of the game?

Posted by: CapsSkins | October 15, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Most teams have a guy designated as the "third" goalie. He'll go get dressed quick, fast, and in a hurry while the rest of the team plays 6 on 5...

Any one watching CSN see that 9 year olds goal?

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | October 15, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Our 3rd string goalie is Brett Leonhardt. Everybody knows that!! He's workin' tonight, we're good.

Ok, so who was complaining about changing ovies linemates?

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | October 15, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

I think gm just told nyls to put on the goalie equipment just in case.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | October 15, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

I like how the Caps aren't taking DUMB penalties and letting the refs easily balance the number of penalties, as expected after that first period.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 15, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Alan may looks like Spock. WTF fehr, no doubt. You know they are looking to even it up.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | October 15, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Varly just dropped another glove shot... At least our D cleared it this time!

Posted by: rovingbandit | October 15, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

I can breathe again! Wait, how long is Theo out?

I sure hope the kid is up to snuff...

Posted by: rovingbandit | October 15, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Was Fehr on the ice after that goal against?

Oh, and boy, did the caps need that...great game!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 15, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Trade Semin, we suck in goal and defensively.

Shocker how a 60 minute effort cures a lot of ills. Going out so short and sweet, only bad element to this game is Theo getting hurt, although Varly was solid in defense and his glove looked ok. Hope Ovie see's how he scored our 3rd goal and him and Knubs pull a role reversal...it'll work a lot. Speaking of that goal, very smart play by Bmo on it to not make the obvious drop pass to Ovie that everyone thought was coming and get it to Knubs in open space.

Semin was a monster tonight drawing penalties early and starting us off. The line combos seemed to work although truthfully when everyone gives that effort it probably won't matter what the combos are. Brads chipping in again to seal it, need guys like Steckel to get going but can't complain with this effort.

Looked like a mirror image of the opener in Boston, identical 4-1 scores as well.

I haven't checked but are Ovie's stats through 7 games 7 goals, 7 assists, +7?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | October 15, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Now that's the kind of defensive effort the Caps are capable of. If we see that every night, they're going to be a dominant team. Forwards got back and played well positionally on the defensive end. Defensemen did a much better job of moving the puck through and out of the zone. Just a complete effort all around tonight. This the Caps team that needs to show up every night.

Posted by: CDon | October 15, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

"Trade Semin, we suck in goal and defensively."

Yea agreed. that goal he got was totally stupid and not necessary. and all those shots jose and varly stopped totally didnt matter in the grand scheme of our winning.

lets just scrap the entire "DC hockey team" idea.

Posted by: mrszilla | October 15, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I think Alan May has found himself a home as an analyst for this team.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 15, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

The really good news is....

I CAN WATCH NHL ON THE FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have tried to avoid them during the loosing streak. Its just really tough for me to watch when the Caps are sucking as they have been. But hey, all that is moot for tonight!!!

GO CAPS!!!
