Green, Morrisonn practicing

Mike Green (black eye, facial laceration) and Shaone Morrisonn (undisclosed) are on the ice here at GM Place and appear to be participating fully in practice, which could mean both defensemen will be available to play Friday against the Canucks.

Coach Bruce Boudreau was unsure after last night's 6-1 win in Denver whether either would skate today.

I'm scrambling a bit after another long day of travel, but I'll have an update later.

I know Frolov is a pretty good hockey player. But did I read somewhere that Frolov was a bit- "bleck" in terms of his attitude? I couldn't think of a good word to use.

I could be dead wrong however- as I can't even remember if/where I read it.

Just saw you replied on other thread. Sorry for the double post.

Also (and I know it has been posted a thousand times before) but does anyone know of the website that shows streaming NHL games? Channelsurf.net or something like that? I really want to watch the Pens/Flyers game tonight. It should be entertaining on so many levels.

Same here, I've had the Center Ice Package from day one and love the rival games. Pens vs. Flyers is the toughest on me. I have a hatred for the Flyers from the 80's-early 90's and hatred of the Pens since Mario and Co. took over and cleaned the Caps clock in the post season. That is compounded by my hatred of Cindy Crybaby (the guy has talent galore, but the whinning...).

As a former player and decent human I can't watch and hope for an injury to anyone. The games can no longer end in a tie, what is a Caps fan to do?!?!?!?

i usually just hope for a similar result as when two people run into each other and knock each other unconscious

Ordinarily, I follow the rule of thumb "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". Granted, that logic does seem to break down when it's PHI vs. PIT. Nevertheless, I will root for Philthy on this one, because for Caps fans there is only one real Enemy, and that Enemy is Pittsburgh.

i find the easiest way to resolve this type of internal conflict - is to wish defeat on the team you want to lose the most. as we all know they both can't lose. that way you don't actually have to root for a team that you hate to win .

I will never consider the NHL to be a fully legitimate professional sports league as long as it tolerates goonage like last night. Aside from a substantial suspension for Koci (I haven't heard anything from the league yet), the Avs should not be able to fill his roster spot during the suspension and the team owners should pay a significant financial penalty. Repeat offenses should receive escalating penalties.

Fighting, particularly the goon vs. goon variety, has no logical connection to the sport of hockey. It would make as much sense to take a 5 minute break mid-game, bring out a table, and play ping-pong on the rink. The goonage is just to pander to the thuggish element such as Flyer fans.

Having said that, the question for the Caps is whether they should disarm unilaterally. We can't just look at last night and the Flyer's game and say that the disarmament strategy works. All costs and benefits must be considered. Are our skill players going to lose playing time as a result of cheap shots, play with reduced effectiveness due to injuries, and suffer longterm adverse health impacts? Do we want Ovi retaliating and, as a result, getting injured or suspended?

Until the league steps into the 21st century, I think the team has to consider getting an enforcer. I think that there is a deterrent effect, making teams think twice before they cheap shot. Maybe the enforcer has to target the other team's skill players, rather than just fighting their goon, if the league is not going to police this situation.

I gotta go with Philly too. In fact, I turned the game on last night partly to see who I'd find myself rooting for, and I can't believe how much more I hate the Pens now (although I'm a long way from even liking the Flyers). Love the bad sushi idea!

On getting an enforcer.

In some ways, it would be good to have someone to prevent people from taking runs at our guys.

On the other hand, it's also not very cost effective in these days of salary caps to have an player who doesn't bring anything else to the table, besides the ability to fight.

Even before the playoffs last year, Brash seemed to be playing his way off the team. He got injured in that fight against Nashville and we didn't see him for a long time. I think the suspension for the hit to Blair Betts was the last straw. (I think his age worked against him for being resigned.)

As an enforcer, Brash was actually a loved guy on the Caps, by both the players and many of the fans.

An enforcer just wouldn't fit too well on our lines, as they are currently constructed.

@ CapsFan75 and Capt_Kirk_In_AZ:

Thank you so much for your uses of the "Sarcasmé" ("Ø") symbol in some of your recent posts.

Some of you may recall that I originally proposed it a week or two ago, as a way to convey sarcasm in the printed word, independent of context.

Just so I don't come of sounding like a #$@%^&!!?! Disney Lawyer (please God, no!), let me be absolutely clear:

All on this Blog are hereby granted permission--indeed, are encouraged--to freely use this symbol whenever it is appropriate to do so.

For those who don't yet know: the "Sarcasmé" is generated by typing 0216 while holding down the "Alt" key, and should be used at the beginning and end of a word, sentence, or paragraph which would be spoken sarcastically if read aloud.

Please bear in mind that the above kesytroke combo is for Windows machines/OS's only; kittypawz (I think) gave out the Mac keystroke combo for the "Ø" symbol. It is described in the Windows Character Map as "Latin Capital O with Stroke".

Anyhoo, thanks again, folks...seeing one of my ideas go "viral" gives me warm, fuzzy feelings...almost as good as a big Caps win!

Oscar Company CO is Lt Jim Kelley of SI (a double Doofus due to backtracking and sounding even dumber the second time around). He reports to Lt Col LarryDavid of 1st Battalion, who in turn reports to Brigade CO Col Cheef.

And, if we must have an enforcer, I vote that we go all in and sign Ogie Oglethorpe. That is, if his papers are in order and the Canadians will allow him across the border. I'm sure BB will support Oglethorpe since they played together.

One more thought, for now, as clearly I never run out of things to say. Really.

These long road trips are he!! on family dinner planning. I mean, I prefer to "rock the white" the whole time the club is on the road. We had crab cakes on Monday, turkey yesterday and pork tenderloin medallions tonight.

Now, mind you, I'm not complaining. But, a fellow does like to rock the red some in there too. The way I see it, the Caps are staying all day in Vancouver tomorrow, so that nakes it kinda like home, plus ShaMo and Alzner are from there anyhow. So, tomorrow, I'm sneaking in a steak and rocking the red. By jingo, that strip steak, and the bottle of red wine, will be dee-licious. But, rest assured, I'll be back to rocking the white for Friday and Saturday. There's probably still some of last weekend's turkey and, if not, those farm-raised shrimps have been so cheap that I've got like 7 2-lb bags in the freezer.

So, if you must have beef during the road trip, tomorrow is the day.

Posted by: MReilly9 | December 16, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

There's a simple way to take care of these types of cheapshots as well as kneeing and headshots.

--Intentional blow to the head is an automatic 10 minute penalty.
--Boarding is an automatic 8 minute penalty.
--Kneeing someone is an automatic 6 minute penalty.

In addition, to make sure that penalties aren't taken when a game is lost (as in the Colorado game), or near the end, each of these penalties will result in an extra 5-minutes tacked on to the beginning of the offending team's next game.

Forget suspensions, once you have powerplays that range from 6 to 10 minutes (like the Philly game) as well as a 5 minute penalty the following game, these cheapshots and plays that can potentially impair a player for life will be gone within a single season--they will be surgically removed from the game for good. Colorado could probably care less if Cochi gets suspended, but how would the feel if the team had to play through an 8-minute penalty kill in their game against Washington as well as a 5-minute penalty to start their next game.

That would get results immediately. It may seem extreme at first, but this bandaid needs to be ripped off once and for all.

Pete.

@horace1

Well said--very well said. Even within the existing rules, the Caps can make the other team pay for its transgressions by scoring. I really don't like goon-dom. I like the hard hits and the other physical aspects as much as the speed, finesse, and sheer energy. But I hate the fights. Honestly, I could have gone without Erskine fighting too. Then we would have had an extended power play and embarrassed the Avs even further.

Overall I like the Avs team--not of course even close to how I feel about my beloved Caps--but Koci not at all. The blaming of Green out there is really quite incredible. Ovi's boarding in the shoulder makes him dirtier than Genghis Kkan and Koci's hit was nothing, just a little love tap to a poor d-man admiring his pass behind the net. Oh and for those of a more serious mind I'm being sarcastic--can't remember how to make the little round symbols.

@tominlfl1
Glad to hear that the idiots out there on other non-Caps sites (not all are idiots of course) belong of course to the Kelley brigade. How could I have forgotten the Kelley brigade--fired off a few snarky emails to him as well.

@Rhino40

And some more players to the Hall of Shame (for players hated by Caps' fans). I've probably named most of them in previous posts but here goes:

David Backes of the StL Blues -- for his injury causing hit to Alex Semin on Dec 18 last year (where inexplicably NO penalty was called)

Tim Gleason of Carolina -- generally giving Caps players a hard time since last year. He was chippy with Semin last year. And he made a hit of Nicky B (which is why Ovi made his infamous hit on him)

Brooks Orpik of Pittsburgh (or should I call him Orprick) -- He slashed Semin multiple times in the playoffs, causing the thumb injury (and possibly a wrist injury too) and even slashed him in the face.

Sidney Crosby -- good player but what a whiner. (Complained about all the hats they threw for the hat trick on Ovi last playoff series)

Chris Kunitz (or should I say Goonits) -- who kept making runs on Varly in the playoffs

And the goonie trio of Koci, Duco, and Carcillo.

As as for Brind'Amour,

Ce n'est pas l'amour pour Brind'Amour dans la terre des Washington Capitales.

Well, when Brind'Amour retires, they should call him Brind No More.

That is true too (on Cooke)

And that's also true of Orpik. Orpik called Ovi a dirty player after the injury to Gonch. And complained about his dirtiness after the suspension.

MReilly9: As for wine recommendation for Friday night...first, the Caps are on the road, which means white wine...second, they are in Vancouver, a cosmopolitan city just north of Washington state (operative hint, Washington state)...now, and this is getting like a game show, "Let's go to the wine cellar, Tommy, and see what they've won!"

I have two bottles in there of 2008 Chateau St. Michelle Chardonnay. That would be the Columbia Valley and as close to Vancouver as you can get. So, let's go with it. I bought this wine from ABC Liqours for $8.99/bottle + a $4 rebate for buying 2 bottles. I've had it at tastings but never a full bottle. I think it's a decent value for under $10 (not quite, though, like Brendan Morrison is a great value at $1.5M). To match with a light chardonnay, let me recommend a shrimp casserole with butter and maybe a thin topping of swiss cheese (cooked in oven until cheese gets a little bit of burnt crust). You can serve this with rice and string beans w/butter. The butter, the cheese, the shrimp, the chardonnay, the Caps on the road in a beautiful city, a win we hope, and you will nod off early Sat morning around 12:45 am a fully stuffed and happy hockey fan.

At least that's my plan.

We don't need an enforcer, the league needs to stamp out cheap shots. If a player goes for a career-ender then they should be punished more severely than a few games off and a little bit of salary.

Glad to see Green is ok. I had flashbacks of last season and his injury. I hope the hit does not bother him mentally and he can stay in the groove that he has been in of late.

Well now I understand why Ø is being used .I can read a bit of Norsk and it was confusing. Rhino, sorry bud but I think you are a bit late to the party for this one. ¡(alt+0161) has been picked up for awhile from some African language and ⌠⌡or ∫(alt+244, alt+255 or ∫ for single line) is the integral symbol from calculus which has also been used for it. If you have to put a mark around what you wrote for others to know that it is sarcastic or ironic, then you should probably rewrite your statement.

What news about Koci? How long does the league have until a suspension is handed out - or isn't? Anyone know?

usually suspensions are handed out the next day, but i think there have been a couple that get assigned 2 days after...just looked up their schedule and they dont play until saturday so it doesnt seem like it would be that weird to hear tomorrow... i hope!!

Thanks, capsyounguns.

I actually don't mind fighting (if it's fair, none of that sucker-punch stuff). It's the cheapshots that need to be erased. It's just dumb for the NHL to let their marquee players to have shorter careers because of the types of plays that everyone hates anyways.

I forgot to add that if they implemented my penalty rules, penalty killing units would begin to absolutely despise the players on their team that do this cheap stuff. Organizational culture would change REALLY quick.

I just thought, also, for the Canucks game, those of you who like Pacific Northwest salmon, that would also be a really good choice for geographic proximity.

I can't say how to cook, I'm not a big fan of salmon except when it's smoked.

Here is your site btw on food/wine pairing:

http://www.foodandwinepairing.org/wine_pairing_board.html

Salmon is a heavy tasting fish. I didn't check it in the pairing, but I might go for a nutty white like from Alsace (SE France). I had one recently, Paul Blanck Pinot Gris, 2007, from Alsace, a bit pricey at $12.99, but a nice wine. The tasting guide should give you several choices for salmon, if that's the route you take. If pork, very clearly a California sauvigon blanc like Simi (on sale now $8.99 at ABC) is wonderful. Kim Crawford ($12.99/New Zealand) is also a fantastic choice for pork.

You know, I should have my own tv show. Nobody would watch, but I'd be insufferably pleased with myself. Remember, whatever you don't choose for Friday can work for Saturday in Edmonton.

Cheers.

Can you imagine a tv show where the host sent people to the Doofus Brigade?

tom- i think if you somehow these superstitions into like a free food delivery package for caps fans we would all be very interested! im usually too busy to put together real meals like that on a regular basis, you could send us all hockey-kosher foods for game night. oh and i get a lifetime discount on this service for coming up with it!

A catering service based on sports teams isn't a bad idea, not if you have a town like DC with all four + soccer.

Of course, not everyone is as superstitious as I am (I wouldn't allow carrots to be eaten while playing the Flyers and it worked, 8-2).

Now, how many do this - do you put the tv volume on certain levels? For instance, when Caps play, I refuse to put tv volume on an odd number. Heaven forbid the tv could be on 13!!! Even 11 is bad. My favorite volume is Peter Bondra (12), but I'll also take Kelly Miller/Matt Bradley (10). 8 isn't loud enough - sorry, Ovi. Flash and Fehr are OK but then I might get yelled at for being too loud. And I can't bark back at mrstominfl1 because she cooks the food. You can't bite the hand that feeds. If I ever spat with her, the Caps lose. The hockey gods are unforgiving on that one. One cross word or sarcastic comment out of me and the penalty is swift and sure.

"You know, that dinner could have been better."

Announcer: "And the Rangers score!"

I've learned. God knows, the hard way.
