Green Sticking With No. 52

I'm not really sure how this rumor got started, but defenseman Mike Green will not be changing his number next season. He will continue to wear No. 52, according to a team official.

As for the Sergei Fedorov matter, I'm still doing some reporting. I hope to have more details in tomorrow's paper.

Good job!

Green wore 5 in Hershey, I believe, which he obviously can't wear in Washington since it is retired (Langway).

I have never been a big fan of retiring numbers. A good idea would be to retire the JERSEY and hang THAT in the rafters. That way other guys won't have to wear numbers like 84 or 61 (c:

The next three JERSEYs that should go up are 3 (Stevens), 11 (Gartner) and 12 (Bondra)

Not a sermon, just a thought (c:

Sport-Express: Fedorov told his agent that he wanted to play for Caps only, so all other offers were not even seriously considered. He also said that he might be back to KHL/Russia next year, but right now he is looking forward for playing in Washington. "The guys and team chemistry is incredible", he said.

BTW, Tarik, he said that reported initial offer of 2 mil was incorrect.

Posted by: Simon says | July 15, 2008 2:07 PM | Report abuse

Guy played his best hockey that led to a huge pay increase, yet people actually believed a player would consider changing his number.

This is another example of a market that knows nothing about hockey.

Posted by: Chief | July 15, 2008 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

the rumor got started by someone who visited kettler's pro shop and supposedly someone there told him not to by a Green Jeresy because he was "rumored to be chaning numbers" they then posted thsi on the caps message board

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY98 | July 15, 2008 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Ahhhh!

Don't buy the GREEN jersey, buy another one. (one we can't sell) LOL

Posted by: CantMissKid | July 15, 2008 2:22 PM | Report abuse

Chief, once again, you seem to post something odd about nothing you know absolutely nothing about.

When I was getting ready to buy my mom a Green tee at Kettler, the pro shop worker said that he would hold off on that because rumor has it (Green is looking to change his number). So, yes Chief, a guy that works at a hockey pro shop that has direct relations with the Caps... stops me from buying a $25 tee, then yes, I believe him.

Posted by: 828 | July 15, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, rumor got started by people who work at the KCI pro shop. One of the guys in there told multiple people he was possibly switching and to hold off purchasing stuff.

@Tarik

The Caps used to have pre-season double headers with their AHL affiliate when they were in Portland and Baltimore. The games used to be held in the AHL site.

Any word/reason they don't/haven't continued this with Hershey? It's a chance to get a good look at both teams, plus Hershey is a nice place to visit (c:

@ 828 - I was in the stands watching the scrimmage and part of the Q&A before heaing to Rock Bottom. I was rocking the red Caps tee and red sandals!

Posted by: Jill | July 15, 2008 2:39 PM | Report abuse

So I come to the blog to ask,

Which jersey should I buy?

I'm going to get a new red jersey. I've got a white Clark jersey; but I want a red one and I have a bday coming around.

My past jersies have included:
Hunter (original red jersey)
Kono (in black)
Clark (in white)
(as well as the original white, the eagle white; and eagle blue)

Any thoughts on who I should get? I want it for a player who will be around for a while.

Ovie is too 'easy'
Semin - frustrates the hell out of me
Green - my brother has this one already
Backstrom - ?
Alzner - still un proven; but the more I read I like the kid.

Thoughts?

We might have passed each other over at Rock Bottom. JSchon and I were sitting at the tables on the left as soon as you walked in the door. We were there until about 3:45 or so... I was wearing a "Semin Rocks" shirt... no no, I wasn't wearing that... but, I was looking around for ya.

Go Skins Go - Get a Laich Jersey... he is a solid pick. Backstrom too... Stay away from the one year deal guys - that's my advice. What about Varlamov(sp?)

That totally wasn't Chief - he is not that arrogant.

Personally, I couldn't care less about Fedorov being sued unless it has some detrimental effect on his ability on the ice. Why is that a "sports section" topic? Shouldn't that be in the "business section"? Actually, it's his personal life, so I'm not sure it even belongs in any newspaper section.

Other than that, great job Tarik!

I'm glad to hear that Green won't change his number. Changing the number would have been a catastrophe. I think it would have perturbed fans that currently wear #52 as well as revenue would have been lost for unsold merchandise with the old number.

Alzner can wear #27, which he wears for the Hitmen.

Chief --

Gonchar switched from 55 to 4 and back to 55.

Eminger switched from 8 to 44.

Sutherby switched from 46 to 16.

Kolzig originally wore number 35 and then switched to 37.

When Juneau was in Ottawa, he switched from number 28 to 39.

Ray Bourque switched from number 7 to 77.

I think your comment is another example of a human being that knows nothing about anything. Players change numbers all the time.

Posted by: Ray | July 15, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

I am also in the market for a new red jersey. Have an old red Hunter and a new white Ovechkin.

I am still debating between Green, Backstrom, and Laich. Was also thinking about a Bradley - but my husband may get that one so I want to be different.

Now that the rumor about Green changing numbers is cleared up, I am leaning towards that one. I am still convinced that Laich will be sporting an A sooner rather than later - so may wait until they come out with a blue third jersey to get a Laich one. (And before folks go all crazy...no I have not heard anything about a third jersey. Just think it will be on the horizon if interest in Caps continues).

George Bush started as #41 but then he was #43.

We have Juneau #90 original white; Hunter #32 in blue; Bondra #12 in blue that he autographed at a preseason game in Lakeland, FL when he ws sitting up in the stands; Oates #77 black; and Ovechkin in red. I like the Hunter the best in a way because he was so good for so long.

Best part about drafting Gustafsson is that we can all break out our Bengt Gustafsson jersey-tshirts that they used to give out at the Caps Center in the 80's.

@ defense, I agree on Fehr. I've still got high hopes, as long as he can stay healthy. Unfortunately that two way contract might keep him down in Hershey for a bit. Hopefully not, anybody who can score 52(I think) goals in one season in the WHL is one to look forward to. If he can stay injury free, I see him turning into a solid power forward. People criticized him for playing soft in Hershey, but I thought he played tough in front of the net and has a deadly quick release. He could stand to put on about 10 more lbs on that frame.

JSchon, thanks for the circus job. Knife thrower is pretty apt for all the knife crime in the UK at the moment. Not that I'm to blame for any of that I might add!

Boo, you must have missed my recent posts, I've been back for a few weeks now.

All, how common is it for people to have their own names on the backs of shirts? It happens over here with soccer shirts but mainly its just for kids. Funny when you see it and think "I didn't know we had signed that guy!" Just wondered if anyone did it in the States.

I'm thinking of getting a Laich or Backstrom home shirt. Does anyone know if the Caps ship overseas?

Dave, one personalized jersey that I saw last season that stuck with me was a Caps red #87 with the name PENS SUCK on the back.

Can't go wrong with either 21 or 19. I'd guess yes on international shipping, but don't know for sure.

I really have to believe that the Caps will win the Cup within the next 2 years because of McPhee and Sluggo's departure! McPhee is a genius! Sluggo is...well...Sluggo!

Dave, according to the shop.nhl.com website, the UK is one of the countries they'll ship to. Have no idea what that shipping charge is, though.

Plenty of non-player names on jerseys. It is uncommon, but not so rare that you think "wth?"

I too, was told that Green was going to change his number. I remember it well:

It was... a Tuesday. The weather was warm, and Chinatown was packed with Red clad fanatics of the city's home team, the Capitals. For this Tuesday, there was a hockey game. Game 7, the game of games.

I had previously stated that if the Capitals could turn the series around and push the Flyers to a seventh game, I would, no matter what, acquire tickets, and then proceed to purchase a jersey of the proper color: red.

The evening started at Kettler Iceplex, I browsed their inventory; insubstantial! I desired a Semin or Green jersey. They had Laich, which was good, but the size... improper!

We proceeded to the DC metro orange line, and transferred to the red to land ourselves in Chinatown. After picking up our tickets at the stub hub location conveniently placed in the vicinity of the arena. I entered the arena, and immediately bolted for the jersey sales boutique.

Upon arrival I checked prices, these jerseys ran an expensive premium. My search for Semin in red was fruitless and frustrating. As I comment to my (at the time) girlfriend, "perhaps I should rather select a Green," a man burst through the horizon and stated "Nay sir, Green shalt be changing his number for thee next season!" The crisis was averted by this noble sir, a red Ovechkin was rocked, but the team was defeated by their foe in overtime. A devastating defeat with help from the dastardly referees.

The Ovechkin jersey will be rocked again, as it should be, with high hopes for 09-10. Let's GO CAPS!

Also, any player should be able to change his number at any time. No big deal.

@Jschon, I want to be the fire juggler at the circus.

Dave,
There was another guy that I saw in section 105 that had a white 87 jersey with the name "Crosby Sucks" on it. Saw it at several games. Always good for a chuckle. Personally, I wouldn't put my name on a jersey. I still go with the original Hunter red jersey. I may have to upgrade this year though. Just don't know who to get.

Posted by: Mark | July 16, 2008 10:07 AM | Report abuse

I have a personalized jersey but you have to have a cool name to do so....FONS!!!

I figure that I will be with the team longer than any of the persons on the ice so I would rather represent myself.

So we are 1.2 million over the cap not inlcuding Schultz or Morrison. Someone is going to get moved someway somehow. Tarik thoughts?

Posted by: bagasome | July 16, 2008 10:25 AM | Report abuse

trade brashear for a scarecrow

Posted by: Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

We shouldn't be 1.2 million over the cap once we get the long term injury exception for Pothier. His 2.5 million cap number won't count against us.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 16, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

technically I should say that we are allowed to exceed the cap by 2.5 million if Pothier is given a long term injury exception.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 16, 2008 10:29 AM | Report abuse

bagasome,

Pothier going LTIR does what to the numbers? Should drop us to 1.3 below?

Posted by: Steve R | July 16, 2008 10:32 AM | Report abuse

I know Caps Insider regulars are getting sick of this kind of post for me but....

Assuming the following 22 players are on the roster (in order from highest to lowest cap hit)
Ovechkin, Green, Nylander, Semin, Theodore, Fedorov, Poti, Clark, Kozlov, Pothier, Backstrom, Laich, Alzner, Brashear, Bradley, Jurcina, Johnson, Schultz, Fehr, Flash, Gordon, Steckel, Erskine,

and including Clymers Buyout of 250K

And assuming the caps are given a long term injury exception for Pothier's 2.5 million cap hit, allowing them to exceed the cap by 2.5 million for as long as he is out

that leaves the Caps with $1,018,899 to sign Mo.

If you start Fehr in Hershey, the Caps have $1,753,899 to sign Mo, and would only have a 22 man roster to start the season.

If you start Alzner in Hershey, the caps have $2,693,899 to sign Mo and will carry a 22 man roster to start.

And the reason Alzner's cap number is so high, is the cap number is a combination of salary and all possible bonuses.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 16, 2008 10:59 AM | Report abuse

It makes my head hurt reading the CBA, but I think the Caps technically need to be under the cap with Pothier, then the LTIR kicks in, and then you can add salary equal to Pothier's cap number.

Now in reality it might just be a big shell game, but that's the way it looks like Article 50.10 is written.

@ Sombrero Guy

That poor dead horse just wants to be buried!

However your figures are useful, as it seems inevitable that someone will bring up the cap number in every post.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 11:03 AM | Report abuse

@tallbear

If so, I think they could just do paper transfers of Alzner and Fehr, "sending" them to Hershey to get under the cap.

I'm not sure if Pothier can be deemed a LTI during training camp or if they have to wait until the seasons starts.

@Corndog

haha yes, thankfully I have that whole thing typed up in an e-mail so I can just copy and paste whenever the question is asked.

Sombrero:
I thought bonuses had to be factored into the cap this season since we don't have a CBA for next season?

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 11:20 AM | Report abuse

@Boo! - Bonuses always have to be factored in, the difference is that in previous years teams could exceed the Cap to pay bonuses by a small percentage, provided they were under the cap by the same amount (or more) the next season to compensate.

Since the NHLPA has not yet re-upped the CBA, the "bonus cushion" is not in place for this season, so we're looking at a hard cap of $56.7 million.

The exception to that 56.7 million is the Long Term Injury scenario, in which case teams can exceed the cap by the long term injured player's cap number, but must get back under the cap when/if that player is ready to return.

a few schedule tidbits are scheduled to be released any minute now.

Tidbits or Morsels?
Kondracke?

Tidbits...

Wrong!

Posted by: JSchon | July 16, 2008 11:34 AM | Report abuse

Perhaps we should just trade that Ovechkin fellow, he takes up so much of the cap!

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 11:51 AM | Report abuse

Tarik,

You mean aside from the Winter Classic being Wings vs Hawks at Wrigley Field and the Coyotes vs Flames preseason matchup in Winnipeg?

How many other tidbits can there be? Just release the dang thing already!

@ Jordan

There's adult 3v3 at Ballston which im sure isn't as exciting to watch as the Caps, but is fun to play.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 12:10 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm playing pickup there today after work. That'll cheer me up a little hopefully.

Jordan,

Enjoy

If you need more encouragement, it's for a good cause and there will be a silent auction featuring some fairly impressive merchandise.

Here is confirmation of the Winter Classic between Wings and Hawks.

Gotta think the next one after that could well include Ovechkin. Maybe Caps at NYR.

Hopefully the tidbit has something to do with the schedule. I will be out of the country until Oct 6th.

Anyone think Im safe for the banner to go up?

@HolyOlie,

Thanks, I'll check that out if I don't have anything else going on (most likely won't, never do).

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 12:25 PM | Report abuse

@Boo!

haha yes, I am but a lowly entrepreneur with enough free time on my hands to read up on CBA FAQ's http://www.nhlscap.com/cap_faq.htm and maintain a Caps salary cap work sheet.

Besides, I don't think i could handle working for the NHL if I had to be around Count Bettman. He creeps me out.
