Guerin to Pittsburgh

Bill Guerin finally has a new team. The Isles captain has been acquired by the Pens for a conditional pick (third rounder at best), according to reports.

I've been checking with my sources about Derek Morris and I'm hearing that the Flyers and Rangers are making a hard push for the veteran defenseman. No mention of the Caps. But that doesn't mean they are not involved.

Waaaaambulance is coming!

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 2:07 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Guerin can take over the "C" from Crosby...he'd be a better captain than Sid anyways...maybe 87 is the "TBA"?

Posted by: R617 | March 4, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Hey, what's this talk about Pothier receiving medical clearance?

Posted by: Section117 | March 4, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Most of Pensblog was hoping they weren't going for Guerin. Probably change their tune now hahaha

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 4, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

If the Rags are hunting for Morris we're pretty much screwed because those idiots will overpay for anybody.

Posted by: ModestProposal | March 4, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

TBA is apparently a conditional draft pick.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 4, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

A conditional? Are the Isles just giving people away?

Posted by: Ovechwin | March 4, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Rangers and Habs have done nothing. Those are two teams that wont sit quietly.

Ian Laperriere from Colorado could be a good fit for us.

Posted by: SA-Town | March 4, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Guerin goes to Pitt for a conditional draft pick...pretty much a giveaway by the Islanders.

Posted by: dcox50 | March 4, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Someone wrote some where that Morris only wanted to be traded to 3 teams... Boston, NJ, and the Caps... I don't see Boston going after him as well. Who knows, maybe that leaves the Caps left.

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know of a link to listen to Vogel and Stretch that isn't Live 365? Work has that blocked, and I can't get the video working.

Bummer about Guerin - I know it wasn't likely but I was kind of hoping for him. :)

Posted by: terpsgirl02 | March 4, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Ovechwin, I think that's the idea. lol. Gotta make room for another 15 year deal with somebody!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 4, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Ummmm hello...we still need defense and grit? GMGM?

Posted by: lylewimbledon | March 4, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

I still don't think Morris can come in w/o:

1) One of the 50 caps under NHL contract moving in the deal.

2) Roughly $2M of regular cap space (read that as Morrisonn) moving off.

in case you dont read it mauree:

I dont know mauree, I cant predict the future. I do know that we are almost done with our rebuild and I would like to see us finish it out.

The pens rebuilt around the same time we did. I guess theirs can be said to have started a year after ours. They gave up quite a bit last year to make a strong bid to the Cup. Now look at their situation this year. I would rather have us basically guarantee a PO spot for the next 10-15 years, rather then try a bunch of fill and dump runs.

The reality is is that our back is too far up against the cap, and the people who can relieve it, no other teams want. We also have 50 players signed, which is the max so that means we cant even just pick someone up. Given our cap situation, our lack of blue liners, and our lack of a playoff tested goalie, i dont see how anyone can expect a Cup this year.

Even if i wanted to trade half our prospects to solidify a Cup run, we cant. We dont have the Cap or roster space, and the people we want to give no other teams want. Thats the reality of our deadline situation.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 4, 2009 2:11 PM

the pens gave a 5th rd conditional pick for geurin (basically a 3rd rd). What a rental steal for the pens....

Our blueliners will never grant a SC. Not this year, not ever. So unless the "magic plan" involves trading some of them for a good D, then what? Do you really think we'll be able to win a cup with Erskine, Jurcina, Schultz and Morrison in the lineup.

Since we have that opportunity now, why not go for it? *shakes head*

Posted by: mauree | March 4, 2009 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Looks like GMGM didn't lie to us this year.

Posted by: superpaqman | March 4, 2009 2:20 PM | Report abuse

117 - Did you hear something about Pothier? That would almost be like trading for a new guy.

Posted by: waitingsince75 | March 4, 2009 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Not this year, not ever. - How can you say that... do you know that for a fact? You are saying there is no chance?

THIS JUST IN
TSN is reporting via the "Grapes" vine that Washington has just signed Andrey Alexandrovich Silnov (Russian: Андрей Александрович Сильнов, born 9 September 1984) is a Russian high jumper and reigning Olympic champion. Born in Shakhty, Rostov Oblast, he is 1.98 m (6 ft 6 in) and weighs 83 kg (183 lbs).

He won the gold medal at the 2006 European Championships with a jump of 2.36 metres, improving the old championship record which was set by Steinar Hoen with 2.35 m in 1994. A week after the European Championships Silnov jumped 2.37 metres in Monaco. This was the world leading jump in 2006 by a comfortable margin.[1]

BB says "I dont know if he can skate but who cares hes Russian and he can JUMP! "

Apparently it was said on the above mentioned stream with Vogs.

Posted by: Section117 | March 4, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

@828

no, that's just my opinion. What's yours? You think we can with a SC with those on our blue line?

Chris Neil to the Panthers

Posted by: PhilR | March 4, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Sweet! Finally somebody who can jump up when pucks are about to deflect off their skates instead of directing them past the goalie!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 4, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

that logic is counter-intuitive mauree.

Why would someone who doesn't expect a Cup this year think we will win with our current blue line? The person (you) who wants a Cup now wants to win with our current blue line, not me. Why would you assume our current blue line is the same we will have 5 years from now?

Mo will be gone after this year. Erskine was a mistake, but his contract ends the same time our rebuild is over (im guessing when one of our goalies is ready is when we can say were "done.") and will be gone too. Schultz and Jurcina are both prospects, and unless you magically somehow have better scout knowledge than the collective knowledge of the Capitals organization I'm going to put faith in the Caps management.

As I have already said, we have 50 roster spots. That is the max. The players we want to give, no teams want. So you tell me what you expect GMGM to do when he cant even untie his hands.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 4, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Wow. That would be cool. Especially if we pick a guy up today (Morris?, DeVries?).

Green-Poti
Pothier-new guy
Mo/Schultz/Alzner/Erskine/Juice/Kronwall

That third d set could be the new marketing campaign for the Caps. The "Pick 'em" plan

Posted by: waitingsince75 | March 4, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

mauree, I don't see why not. The young guys get up for big games - would you say that's not true? They are young... remember when you were young... you liked to do things that people said you couldn't do. So, in a way, I have hope from all of that. I don't care if we lose 2 games in a row or lose to Colorado. We have beat'n the good teams and have been able to hang with the elite teams. So, anything is possible.

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

StanleyCup1907, that's a lot of research to do for someone who doesn't even like the Caps. If I had the time you spent doing that research for other teams sports blogs... heck, I would probably be jobless and fat.

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

morris for morrison ,machensney, and a conditional3rd (7th). Lets make it happen, with this pickup, we could make a run at the eastern conference this year. I think our blue line really has to wait until carlson is ready--maybe 2010-11. then we will be able to compete with the best of them-and we will have three offensive dmen and three-four stay at homers

Posted by: pshak56 | March 4, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

I'll be there is a standing offer of Morrisonn for Morris, that Phoenix takes if they don't get a better offer. It makes so much sense because the players could just swap jerseys and the equipment mgr would just need slightly adjust the name on the back.

@richmondphil

fair enough. I don't think the SC is the goal for this year. But we WILL have to change a lot of our bluliners sooner or later. Every tradeline we have good opportunities to do so. No, obviously I don't have GMGM knowledge but allow me to be a sofa GM/Coach and criticize his positions that some players cannot be traded, so we watch other teams get stronger.

I've actually never seen Pothier play. I took a break from the caps during the rebuild and he was hurt before last years amazing playoff run.

How good is he? Similar to the Pens getting Gonchar back? Or is he just another Erskine or Jurcina type? Third line D who might play 5 minutes a period...

He isnt a Gonchar, but he isnt a Erskine/Jurcina. He just plays a good defensive game and can move the puck around. when healthy, he is a 2nd pair d man.

Pothier was steady. He wasn't really top pair though. Once Poti was signed to take some of the extra shifts, he played better. I suppose every one of our D guys are the same, limit their minutes and they're fine.

Capitals coach Bruce B. and GMGM have Caps goaltenders kill whole defense, and make offense bury the bodies as punishment for the sorry, unprofessional effort put for the past 2 games.

Also, Sidney Crosby is unconsolable, crying in the corner with the Penguins trade for Bill Guerin. "I'm the only one who get's to wear the letter "C" on my shirt!" he was quoted as saying, before retiring to the corner with his teddy bear.

Morris is just steady, nothing great. He's not going to be anything more than a very small piece to this puzzle. If we get him, we'll have to outbid the Rangers/Flyers. Means we'll really overpay just to make a "splash"

Frankly everyone bags on Mo but Derek Morris isn't an upgrade on Morrisonn even. He's not big and he can get forced into making turnovers but he plays a decent two way game and throws a hit once in a while. Poor man's Keith Ballard.

Posted by: maven1918 | March 4, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

let's not get carried away - Caps can still go deep with this team, depending on goaltending. Nuevirth not ready - that's why the loss on Tuesday. You can't give up five goals on 19 shots and win in the NHL. A 2 goal lead does two things: makes it hard to score and makes it easy to give up odd man rushes. That game was misleading.

There is really not much he can do.

Tied by who? Himself? because he got himself into this mess with his stupid contracts to Nylander and Erskine not to mention Bradley

We have the max players under contract allowed. We need to move someone to get someone. Also McPhee has been very protective of draft picks in recent years, so I don't think he will part with them so quickly.

Caps better hope not to face Philly again. Carcillo and company will just bash us into submission. You saw how well we did against Carolina finishing every check on us, we wilted under the pressure. We needed some of that Carcillo presence. He'll fit nicely into that lineup. Hopefully the Bruins and Flyers somehow meet and the Bs take them out. I have higher hopes facing Boston than I do Philthy

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 4, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

evidence indicates that there was a discussion between him and the management team on his NTC.

If he thinks that he could be on the move, he's discussed waiving the NTC and has probably done so.

Having said that, this has been a pretty quiet day. 10 or 11 trades involving about 20 players?

Carcillo clears a little cap space for the Flyers to make another move, possibly (Morris? Bouwmeester?). They might try to flip Carcillo in the next few minutes.

And if that flip doesn't pan out, we get someone who is more or less Upshall. Not sure why Homer added a 2nd rounder there, though.

Posted by: DC_Flyer | March 4, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Are you REALLY shocked that no moves were made? Seriously...this couldn't have been a major surprise to anyone whose been around this team for many many years...

Posted by: R617 | March 4, 2009 2:59 PM | Report abuse

If there are no deals, it will be interesting to see how transparent McPhee and Leonsis are about what was tried, what wasn't, without giving away confidential information between the various GMs in the league.

The team can't be shooting for a Cup this year - because it isn't good enough and wasn't improved.

Boston improved. Pittsburgh improved (more from Kunitz than Guerin - who has 3 G in his last 24 playoff games). Philly - not sure. New Jersey improved a bit.

The Caps aren't out of it, but they're farther behind the pack heading to the homestretch than they were before, and that's not a time to be losing ground in the race.

steveo, im talking about nyls in particular. Its his contract that kills our cap space and its his contract that probably could not be moved. Why the hell is a team going to pick up an almost 5 mil/yr hit for next year on a guy who hasnt done anything at all this year?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 4, 2009 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Riley Cote wont play anymore with Carcillo there. Cote plays about 2 1/2 minutes a game anyway. They dump Upshalls salary, and make an upgrade from Cote to Carcillo.

Brash will crush Carcillo.

They way this team has been playing last two weeks, compare to last 10 gms for Flyers, Pens and Devils have been playing.

Posted by: 555Mass | March 4, 2009 3:00 PM | Report abuse

To Mauree:

Carcillo is like Sean Avery and Ian LaPerriere. someone mentioned Hartnell too. He has some skill, but his main attributes are he is an in your face player who hits everything, can fight very well for his size, and he's mean as hell. Ask Bears fans, Carcillo was their public enemy #1 when he plaeyd for the Baby Pens. He's young, and has a lot of promise as a 2nd or 3rd line checking winger who really brings it.

Nylander's contract and recent poor play are the #'s 1 & 2 reasons why nothing happened today. Not saying that GMGM DIDN'T talk to anyone, but with those two HUGE hinderences, it does not surprise me he had no takers, even if Nylander DID waive his NMC for someone...

Wiazards fan here. I have posted on this blog 2 or 3 times the past year or so. Although I must admit I do read it often, based on the fact that my beloved Wiz suck. I enjoy coming here every so often and offering my 2 cents (for what it’s worth).

I appears that the overall population of Caps fans I read here are a bunch of whiners like there boy Crosby. There are a few levelheaded fans, but the majority seem as if they are about to board the Titanic. Let me say this, I am a long time DC resident, and the you people have a GREAT team. Your team is currently in a battle for 2 place in the ENTIRE Eastern Conference, yet I still feel the general consensus is that they are not that good. I can’t even remember the last time the Wiz were seeded this high, this late in the season. Get your heads outta you’re a$$e4, seriously. You people are comical. The Caps play 2 bad games and now all of a sudden they need to do this, need to do that, should have done that, the list goes on and on. It’s beyond ridiculous. I can guarantee you the Capitals are one of the most feared teams in the playoffs, simply based on pure talent. You people act like they are fighting for the 8th seed or something. The Caps are good, very good. Say what you want about Theodore, but he is a former Calder winner, and a former Hart winner, the guy knows how to play the game.

Case in point, recognize a great thing when you have it. Recognize a good team and enjoy the ride.

Lets face it, the Caps like their finesse lineup and they think having one or two guys like Brashear or Bradley makes up for the rest of the powderpuffs. Our best hitter on D is Kronwall who can't even replace Schultz.

Once again he refuses the address the D. Its really comical at this point. No toughness, No D, and sketchy goaltending.

All those teams had cap issues but worked around it. The Caps couldn't do anything most likely due to McPhee's stupid moves in the past.

Ugghh...I HATE McPhee! Complete failure of a GM.

@alee06

They have the cap room to bring up Alzner now if they wanted. That is unless Pothier is back.

Btw Carcillo isn't a GOON. He's a d_ck, but not a goon. Goons are guys like Brashear. Guys who play limited shifts in a game and who can't play anything but 5 on 5. Carcillo plays the PK, the PP, even strength. He's more effective because he gets under the skin of skill players and tough guys alike. How often does Brashear lay hits on skill players or get under their skin and draw penalties? He's so slow he can barely hit anyone. He's good for one thing only, to fight the other team's tough guy. Very one dimensional. Carcillo will get 18-20 shifts per game and play in all situations and drive the opposition nuts with his hitting and his chatter.

That's just plain false. McPhee built the team we have now. OUR SECOND PLACE TEAM IN THE EASTERN CONFERENCE. Sure, everyone thinks the Caps might have needed a more defensive d-man but you could say this team is good enough to get something done as it is.

Posted by: alee06 | March 4, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Yea who would the Caps had given up if they had gone after Morris. A bunch of young prospects? Believe me, no team in the NHL will be looking forward to facing the Caps; Sorry, you can think all you want about the recent struggles of this team, but no coach in the NHL looks forward or thinks he will have an easy time against Ovechkin, Semin, Green, and Backstrom in the play-offs.

@maven

No I don't work for the caps, I just have faith in what GMGM has been doing long term. You can't plot out every move and see every piece fit perfectly in professional sports and especially not in the NHL in this new cap era. I'm not sure if anyone has figured out "the strategy" yet to be a long term threat to hoist the Cup every single year save for Detroit's Jedi mind tricks to get big names to take less money to stay there.

They committed to Theo for 2 years when they gave him that deal, who would you want to upgrade to after Backstrom inked his new deal? Our D is young and not the best in the NHL but you don't need to have the best of everything to do well and go deep in the playoffs. I would never have given up that much for Morris like NYR did, and who knows what Fla was asking for JayBo?

Nyl's contract, having 50 guys signed, a couple of rumored guys who people thought would move inking new deals all could have nixed a deal we were thinking about making. I have faith in the plan, trying to get lucky and sacrifice long term flexibility for a snatch and grab job isn't optimal in my opinion.

@Vegasfan
Oh I didn't know that, thanks for that one. I read an article (probably like months old now that I think about it...) that said he may not have gotten the call because of cap issues. Makes me wonder why we picked up Kronwall instead of calling Alzner up.

I don't see anyone on the move that would have been a great fit in DC. I'd rather see no movement rather than movement just to please the fans.

I agree with 828 to all these bandwagoners...maybe 2008-2009 wasn't a good time to become a Caps fan. Maybe next year?

Many of us thought GMGM should be fired years ago.

Once again he refuses the address the D. Its really comical at this point. No toughness, No D, and sketchy goaltending.

All those teams had cap issues but worked around it. The Caps couldn't do anything most likely due to McPhee's stupid moves in the past.

McPhee will find some excuse, trust me. His fans here will swallow it up and be happy. Thats life in capsland these days. No one's willing to admit that other teams also have cap issues and they're able to still move players.

no bandwagoners here unless you're talking about yourselves. Most of my friends and I have been caps fans for 20 years plus so bite it. We probably know more about the Caps than you'd ever know in your lifetime. We watched Lou play, do you even know who that is?

Caps announce Nylander's contract extension. Just kidding.

@phil, I the rangers had to trade some guys for Cap reasons after the Antropov and Avery.

@cj658, Yes, the team is good, but I think the consensus is that they are not SC good yet. (I'm not sure anyone in the East is, but we'll see how NYR, Flyers and Boston improve (or not) after the trades.) Hence the complaining.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | March 4, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

@ cstanton1

I hope you get fired from this board so we don't have to be subjected to your asinine comments.

McPhee is a very good GM and did great at the deadline last year. There weren't many deals today at all. Very disappointing day in terms of trades. Mindless idiots like you just want us to make a deal for the sake of making a deal. That's how stupid deals get made.

Also, everyone is whining how Nylander hasn't been dealt. Other GMs aren't on crack. Why would they want him? It's not like McPhee can magically convince them to take a very under performing player with a huge contract. You need to look at thing realistically, not like a hysterical 14-year old girl who's all emotion over logic.

Plus, it's not over yet. Often deals are announced hours after the deadline. Still hoping we could get a goalie. Maybe Clemmenson whom NJ promised to trade.

Now let's really look at the deals in the East:

Boston got Montador, bottom 6 D and Recchi who's older than your mom.

Montreal didn't do crap.

Philly got Carcillo for Upshall. Big whoop. One jackass for another.

I do like Rangers getting Antropov. He has great size and skill. A change of scenery might work well for him. It's tough to stay motivated on a crap team.

Rangers getting Morris is good too although they gave up a lot, but that's probably because they had to dump contracts to fit Antropov and Morris under the cap.

Pitt improved the most, unfortunately for us. Getting Kunitz a bit earlier and now adding Guerin.

They say more trades are yet to be announced, hoping the Caps, if they made a move, stuck to the plan and kept it small...

Posted by: alee06 | March 4, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

I'll make one last comment for the day...when we were down 3-1 last year (with something like 16 rookies to the playoffs no less) to Philly in the 1st round I read and heard all that talk of us being soft, too many European guys who didn't want to pay the price, and lots of questions whether guys like Semin and Backstrom would be playoff producers.

We didn't win the series but those questions got a bit of an answer.

Concerns are valid, but sudden panic seems a little misplaced at 40-20-5, the fastest this team has ever gotten to 40 wins. See how it finishes.

@ cstanton1 and other McPhee haters

I wonder who's been the Caps GM during the last reconstruction process resulting in what is considered by everyone in hockey as being one of the best teams in the NHL right now. Last time I checked that person was McPhee. Not only do we have a great team, but our minor league system is flush with great prospects. In fact, according to NHL on the Fly (probably idiots compared to such an amazing hockey man as you) the Caps and the Bruins have the deepest system right now. By any measure, to people who are actually knowledgeable and have a brain McPhee has done a great job.

P.S. I also love it how you constantly praise other morons on this board who spout emotional nonsense as ones who make sense. You guys should all hang together. Combined you just might reach a 3 digit IQ.

Well, I beg to differ. In sports, it is a BRAND NEW season once the playoffs start. Period. Do you think all the Cardinal fans thought their team had what it takes to go the the Super Bowl. I know the analysts and so called “brains” sure didn’t think so. Point is, you can’t typically judge a team in the playoffs, based on a few rough games in the regular season. The Caps HAVE the talent to win the East and go to the finals, and any level headed fan knows that. Even with a subpar D and average goaltending, based on the rest of the conference, they can easily win the East. The Caps problem is NOT talent or system. It is heart, determination, discipline. ie, “will to win”, “playing harder than the other guy”. It’s also a matter of playing SMART (dumb penalties). Come payoffs, one would think all that would change. Look at the Caps this year, they seem to get up for the BIG games, and fall asleep for the lousy teams. Taking care of Boston, Detroit, NJ, etc. That should be a good omen come playoffs. To all you morons who were begging for a trade, that Caps problems have NOTHING to do with personnel. It is simply what I mentioned above, and all of you know that.

You don't have to prove yourself to cstanton1 - he is Mr. Negative... no matter what happens, he will be pissed. Congrats on your 20 years as a Caps fan... the way you comment and act, you probably don't have any hair. I am just confused as to why you can't see that this is the best team in your 20 years of watching the Caps... did you used to watch them, then stopped, and then they became good again and you started to watch them again. I don't remember you posting last year... It's your negative comments that make you look dumb, not your knowledge.

@ Davethecapsfan

Thank you for being the voice of reason. The hysterical little girls on here are really getting to me.

Can you imagine what would be getting posted on here if we went down 8-0 to say Tampa? Yeah, Detroit is a POS team now, right? And they didn't make any moves either. Ken Holland should get fired.

Posted by: ranndino | March 4, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

The Capitals have not been 'bullied' at any point this season. So bringing in grit and toughness is kind of silly. The most damage done to the Caps have been by the Caps (puck over the glass in the D zone anyone?). Guerin, Morris, etc are not the answer to undisciplined play or taking off the 2nd or 3rd period. Anyone watching this team knows that when it plays within it's system and disciplined they can beat any team in the league.

As I've mentioned many time before cstanton1 posts only when the Caps have a bad game or two. During the long winning streak and Green's NHL record he was nowhere to be found. Pathetic, unhappy, negative cockroach who crawls out only to spew garbage about the team he's supposedly a fan of.
