Helmer Returns

It's a good thing Bryan Helmer stayed around (not that he had a car in which to drive himself home). Because it appears he's going to be recalled at some point today since Shaone Morrisonn (lower body injury) left practice early and will not be ready to play tomorrow against the NHL-leading Boston Bruins.

Some other quick notes from this morning's practice:

*The lines looked like this:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Gordon-Semin
Gordon was up there because Fedorov took a "mental health day"
Laich-Nylander-Fehr/Clark
Brashear-Steckel-Bradley

*Gordon (back spasms) has been cleared to play. But he likely won't return until Monday.

*Tom Poti says he'll wait until tomorrow before deciding whether he can play against Boston. But something is telling me that he won't be back until Monday -- and that might be optimisitic.

Asked if he might consider waiting until after the all-star break, Poti said, "That would be the smart thing to do," he said with a smile. "But tomorrow is a big game, No. 1 vs. No. 2."

*Jose Theodore just got another new mask. And no, I still don't have a camera. But trust me when I say this might be the best/most detailed mask in the league. It's all red with blue bars. It's got bald eagles on both temples and all of the monuments are represented in some form. It's also got the weagle on the front and back.

Theodore said it might be a while before he wears it.

*Tomorrow's a big game, obviously, and the Caps are approaching it as such.

"Our goal is to catch the teams that are ahead of us," Boudreau said. "Boston happens to be there now. We don't know if it's possible, but you have to have something to shoot for every night."
.
*I'm going to write a story about Boston for tomorrow's paper and the Bruins are about to go on the ice here at KCI.

Write the story on how Tim Thomas bailed them out again last night vs. the last place Islanders.

We are going to have to crash the net tomorrow. Thomas will eat up all those open shots that we love to throw at the net.

Wow, what an interesting few hours for Helmer. I can see it now, him calling home to his wife...

"Hey, sweety, I'll be home later this evening. I got sent down again."
"Aw, I'm sorry. I'm making a pot roast for dinner though."
"Oh! Pot roast! My favorite!"

(3 hours later)

"Hey, honey. Can you save the pot roast 'til Sunday? The Caps called me back up."

Poor guy.

Anyway... Tarik, if Gordon DOES play tomorrow, does Nylander get the scratch?? And what are the odds of Clark getting scratched again??

Posted by: dcox50 | January 16, 2009 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Aw, we almost got to see a Flash Gordon line!

I'm starting to develop a lot of sympathy for Helmer. That's a rough way to live.

I'm coming around to Theodore, also -- have to respect his optimism.

Re: Poti

Poti is from Mass. He is probably dying to get a Sat night game in that will be broadcast on NESN for friends and family. I hope he doesnt push it, but it's got to be killing him to have to sit tomorrow.

With all the money Tarik spends following the team around I'm sure they won't care if he goes and expenses a point-n-shoot camera.

What's the deal Tarik?? Not even a camera phone? You have a blog; there isn't an excuse to be this behind on the technological curve.

I like the +/- for forwards, not for d. Since you don't get a - for GA when on PK, you don't see the number of times that Schultz gets scored on in PK situations. It doesn't show up in that stat.

Greg S.: The league doesn't keep up with who is on the ice when a goal is scored on the PK, but the Caps do. BB would not continue to use him on the PK if he was the common demonitor for failed PK attempts.

Just a stupid pet peeve of mine, but there is only one Monument in DC, the rest are Memorials. What can I say, being a native Washingtonian, it's the little things that I like to be accurate. Like in movies when someone crosses K St. in Georgetown and the next shot they're standing in front of the White House - it makes me nuts.

I like the idea of making up quotes for Semin since he doesn't do interviews.

Semin: "I mean, a guy could be deadwood but just because he's really tall, the league decides to make him a star. Look at Chara. He's really tall. But I prefer the way Schultz is tall to the way Chara is tall.

President Bush: "I have looked into Chara's eyes and when I did, I felt fear in my own eyes."

Semin: "Why is Bush in the locker room?"

Ovechkin: "He needs a job. Didn't you hear?"

Semin: "You know, just because someone is President, the league loves to promote them. A person could be deadwood in this country and become President. It's not like Russia where you have to cut savvy, backroom deals."

Fedorov: "Really?"

Schultz: "Hey, Sasha, I heard you like my height."

Semin: "It's already being taken out of context. It was just an example."

Bush: "See you boys later. I gotta get the socks in the washer."

Posted by: Don-Ald | January 16, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Later that same day...

"Here, Sasha, I got your socks washed."
"What did you call me?"
"I called you Sasha. He-he."
"You may not call me Sasha. Only my family and teammates may do that."
"Okay. He-he. You can call me Bushie. Laura likes to call me Bushie."
Semin doesn't respond.
"By the way," Bush says, "what country do you come from anyway."
"I'm from - from France. Yeah, that's the ticket."
"He-he. That means you must be able to speak Canadian. All the people in France speak Canadian. I leaned that when I was President."
"Sure you did."

I'm in for 10, sombrero. I also want the post to feel crappy about it; they have a whole felt that could supply him with a camera. FYI for 150 that lens won't be fast enough nor the aperture wide enough to get many quality shots. Sisters are moving faster than one realizes.

If enough people pony up, maybe we can get something nicer.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | January 16, 2009 1:28 PM | Report abuse

There might actually be some kind of union thing that only allows "photographers" to take pictures that will be published. There might also be ruled prohibiting cameras from being taken into locker rooms. I really have to think the Post would have given Tarik a camera if they wanted him to have one. I'm wrong half the time though so this could easily be one of those times, but there has to be a reason why all reporters don't routinely carry cameras.

Posted by: tominfl1 | January 16, 2009 1:32 PM | Report abuse

No need to for a collection, if everyone who was fined by their posts pays their fine we should be able to not only buy a camera for TEB, but we could also spring for a new Chevy Malibu with dual overhead cam.

I love your enthusiasm sombreroguy, but buying a camera for a guy who probably could buy us all one and still not feel it in his wallet is not a good way of using your money wisely. Besides, as someone else said it, the Washington Post probably has it cover on his expenses. Anyway, you don't want to start a bad precedent, do you? What is next, buy him a first class ticket and having stay at the presidential suite of every hotel? I think he needs to be working a little bit harder to get some sympathy from some of us.

@Opita - No hard feelings, You're more than entitled to your opinion, but I have no problem chipping in $10. I also don't think the Post is going to pony up any time soon, seeing as how they have been cutting costs, buying people out and downsizing for years. They didn't even bother sending Tarik to cover the draft last June.

My opinion? I have gotten more than $10 worth of entertainment/info out of this blog. I'll refrain from buying one beer tomorrow at the game so that $10 is now accounted for, and I saved myself a few empty calories I definitely don't need post holidays.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | January 16, 2009 2:02 PM | Report abuse

@sombrero Guy
I am with opita on this. Why waste your money on this guy?

Why not establish a SombreroGuy fund to buy eagle's nest tickets (they still sell them for $10, don't they) for underprivileged children? You already have enough to get 7 tickets for new and future fans of the team — maybe you can get Ted to match your fund.

Posted by: x1232 | January 16, 2009 2:02 PM | Report abuse

@x1232 - Eagles nest seats are sold out for the rest of the season, the players already do a lot for needy kids (and if Kids are needy, I can think of better use of money than a hockey ticket) but there are other charities for that.

This isn't a charity, it's just the fans chipping in a little money that won't be missed, to help show appreciation for our tireless beat reporter, and to enhance the overall experience of the Caps Insider.

I don't think anyone is expecting 5 new photos every day, but sometimes there are funny/interesting things going on that a simple point and shoot photo would help explain. Theo's new mask being exhibit A

Posted by: SombreroGuy | January 16, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Why do others care what Sombrerro is doing? It's his choice and others to donate their money. If you don't want to then don't its that simple. The only reason not to do this is if Tarik posts saying he doesn't want or wouldn't use a camera. Until then Operation Camera Fund continues.

I guess i'll chime in.

Beat writer bust there butts and have nothing to show for it. Look around, and tell me how many teams have steady beat writers like the Caps do.

TEB does the best job in the NHL regarding a hockey team. There are very few in the NHL who have quality beat writers follow the respective teams.

Granted, I have not seen the Caps in person, (well, I did see Semin when he was in Portland) but for a group of 15+ contributors to put a pool of money together and buy a camera for a person, big deal.

Why don't you criticize me for living in Maine and enjoy the Caps? I should live in DC so I can see them EVERY night they play.

I think SombreroGuy has made himself pretty obvious, and if you feel your money is being 'stolen' than ask for proof of the camera before TEB gets it.

Anyways, have fun, and I hope the Caps beat the Bruins, I am playing against Thomas in my fantasy league. LOL

As far as photos go - the quality of your still photo has very little to do with the camera you're using unless you're doing specialized work such as long exposures or macro work. There are a few regulars on the blog with photography experience who might be able to give tips, though I'm an amateur hack at best.

Actually everyone, hold off on sending payments. I want to clarify that

A) This isn't going to get Tarik in trouble

and

B) Tarik isn't offended/irritated/annoyed by the whole idea.

Why are we buying a camera for TCBTEB, did he say he wants take pictures for us or something?

@kittypawz
Sorry for not seeing your reply yesterday regarding the optimistic belief that our high-flying ways will overcome our defensive shortcomings. I was having alligator issues at the time. (>)

Geee, it doesn't take much to please you guys. Mention one or two words about the Caps in the media and all of sudden you become a great person. Of course, the reverse is true, say something critical and you will beat up the guy straight to hell, stay there and beat him some more. LOL.

@007
I will ignore your dumb remark aimed at me but let me ask you. Are you and Tarik co-workers? friends? You seem to know his schedule better than his wife. By the way, replace the name of Tarik with mine and you will have described my daily routine. I do my own traveling schedule as I don't work for a big corporation like Tarik, I am sure the Washington Post has a travel service. I have that schedule because I make good money and I enjoy the work. I would quit in a New York's second if I didn't. I am sure Tarik does not complain as much as you do for him. But, of course, to you, this might be another dumb remark, so ignore it, and God Bless you.

Sombrero, I'm in - on one condition.

If Tarik rejects the camera, you donate your $10 to Caps Care. I'll do the same.

If you're willing to part with a ten spot to buy a camera for a beat writer, it shouldn't be hard to cough up ten bucks to help a kid suffering from cancer.

@austinsteve - Tarik has mentioned in posts that he has put in a request for a Camera with the post's editors, but to no avail. Its understandable, as his job is to write however a Camera would come in handy from time to time, for like photos of Theo's mask, Semin in the pink helmet, the hard hat etc.

Plus it seemed like a nice way to say "thanks for everything" since his updates give us all a wonderful way to waste time during the work day.

@ShariLeigh131.
You are right. Maybe I am not being fair as I really don't know what he is giving in terms of support and opportunities, but I do know something about reporting, and in my opinion I don't think he is at the level that he can be. But that is just an opinion on his reports, nothing personal on Tarik. For the life of me, I just have not seeing anything special about his reports, they are just sound bites or links to other articles.
In any case I will drop my commentary on the subject as I see that it irritates some people, and that is not my intention.

why don't you give Mike Wise crap for being a total idiot that knows nothing about hockey instead of picking on Tarik?

Posted by: mnmnt_snow | January 16, 2009 4:14 PM | Report abuse

@JohninMpls - Fair enough. I don't view this as an either/or thing since I've donated to Caps Care and Courage house at games already.

to be honest, the idea just popped in my head this morning, when Tarik mentioned he didn't have a camera. On my last birthday, a bunch of friends chipped in to surprise me something nice. It cost them little, but got me something I had been wanting to buy for a few months and just hadn't pulled the trigger on.

While most of us have never met Tarik in person (myself included), it just seemed like a nice way to say thanks and possibly enhance the Caps Insider experience for everyone.

Hopefully it didn't come across as us trying to assign Tarik even more responsibility. That wasn't the intention.

For some real news...from yesterday

Milan Lucic, who has yet to participate in a full-contact practice since suffering an undisclosed injury, is doubtful for the Bruins' next two games, the Boston Globe reports.
Spin: "I'm feeling much better," said Lucic. "Now I'm going in the gym and doing some things to try and get back to where I was. Right now, I'm heading in the right direction. I feel better every day. I wouldn't say I feel 100 percent yet." As a result, he still slots into the day-to-day category.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | January 16, 2009 4:37 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, Only intimidating if he cuts his hair. That mop he's had going on is not scary. However, it gets worse for said guy when you realize Erskine knows Alzner, who (as redlineblue said) is the epitome of good boyfriend material. Not only is he going to be terrified out of his mind, he's also going to be judged extremely harshly. Kid has no chance.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 16, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Opita, I'm not trying to start a fight with you over the internet. I'm just making a claim that I think calling out the guy who gives us more info on the Caps than any reporter, beat or otherwise, ever has seems dumb. He walks a thin line; we've all noticed that the players dont like the media, and he has to juggle all that, caps mngmt, obsessed fans and good journalism. You're entitled to your opinoin that he soesn't do much. I'm entitled to call BS.
We could go back to the days of a 10 line blurb on the last page of the sports section.

He just looks homeless with long hair, which I suppose could be scary to some people. The buzzed thing he had going on made him look intimidating. However, I don't think there's a happy medium, as evidenced above. He's got to go with one of the extremes.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 16, 2009 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Kessel still has mono, no? Having all those guys out certainly can't hurt the Caps. At least not directly. Is it Saturday night, yet?

Posted by: Steve_R | January 16, 2009 5:00 PM | Report abuse

I think its nice of you guys to pitch in and get Tarik a camera. The readers/fans are the ones who will benefit. I personally don't think beat writers are exactly rolling in the dough like Opita suggests -- considering how much newspapers are struggling economically.

On a side note, Corey Masisak does a pretty good job over at the Times, but he doesn't get the same love that TEB gets. Just throwing that out there.

Posted by: the_ocho | January 16, 2009 5:05 PM | Report abuse

*shudders* God that was an awful mug shot. I don't think I've had the "pleasure" of seeing Erskine with his locks truly a-flowin', so if that's what its like, then I concede. That's terrifying.
the_ocho, Exactly! I've gotten way more than ten bucks worth of info and who knows what pictorial gems Tarik will uncover with a camera!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 16, 2009 5:19 PM | Report abuse

@oo7
That is why I ignored your "dumb" remark. I took it as your opinion and nothing more. I don't understand the name calling when two people don't share the same way of thinking or looking at things.
I don't disagree that Tarik gives us more information about the Caps on the Washington Post media outlets than anyone else; having said that, I don't think that what we get is good enough, but the paper lacks of support for the NHL, the Caps, and its reporters appears to be a big problem, so maybe some of that could account for the two-bit reporting. I don't know, I just think that sound bytes and link to other articles is not great reporting. I get better reports from the Washington times and USA Today and other outlets. So I keep myself inform, so what is my problem? Nothing really, a big mouth with an opinion.
As for feeling sorry or bad for a guy who gets pay well to watch a game and socialize with sports people? Well, I just can't. I work too damn hard, as I am sure you and others do, to give a hoot about it.

@ mnmnt_snow
Who is Mike Wise? And why should I give him or anyone "WHO IS A TOTAL IDIOT ABOUT HOCKEY" any crap? There would be, to misquote Carl Sagan, "millions upon millions of " us receiving crap.

Look I understand the love most you have for Tarik, that is ok, but that does not mean you should give him much slack on doing his job.

Posted by: opita | January 16, 2009 5:24 PM | Report abuse

I do agree with opita that TEB has a pretty sweet job and don't have much sympathy for his 'demanding' schedule.

However, I do question the call for better reporting. What more do us fans really want or need to know about these players? I think the info we are given is adequate. Anything more is creepy. The players and the team deserve some privacy as well.

Posted by: the_ocho | January 16, 2009 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Opita-
Then we cordially agree to disagree. I think the guys pretty fair. When they sucked, he said so. We have to keep in mind that he's a beat writer not an op Ed writer. He's only allowed to say so much of what's on his mind. Out of curiosity, what would you like to see him write? Would it make the players alienate him? Because a reporter no one will talk to is useless.

Sorry for being rash with my earlier comment. No disrespect intended. But I think the guy works pretty hard considering the deadline and the blog updates mid game.

It's not the "beat writer" whose at fault with,in my humble opinion, the horrendous lack of respect the Capitals get in the sports section.....it is clearly the fault of the "sports editor",or whomever, decides the placement of stories on the front sports page.Recently, the Caps had a great home victory, and yes,the story was on page one(small and at the top,and two small stories about local basketball teams at the bottom),the rest of the page(minimum 75%),had a HUGE photo of someone catching a football, and the story was about 2 teams in the playoffs(obviously not the Deadskins). Why????? I think the answer is as clear as black and white.BTW,I called the Post to complain 5 TIMES this hockey season, leaving my name and #,asking the same question, implying the same reference to black/white,and ,of course,no response

Hockey, in general, is getting little coverage - USA Today only has about half a page (on a good day) and it's usually on the last or back page.

I think the lockout and the subsequent loss of exposure on ESPN had a lot to do with this - it's as if the sport is not viewed as "major."

Of course, this is only a U.S. thing (other than the major hockey cities) - it's the exact opposite in Canada. I go to Ottawa a lot on business and I'm in heaven - except for the whole "Sindy is a hockey god" thing.

Posted by: Z-Money | January 16, 2009 6:01 PM | Report abuse

Z-Money:
I agree that hockey is not considered a major sport in the U.S., except for fans in some U.S. NHL cities.

Newspapers consider the major sports to be NFL, college basketball and football, NBA basketball, and MLB hanging on as sort of a mid-major sport, followed by hockey.

The only thing I like about the NFL is I can watch it recorded via DVR, skip forward immediately after a play is finished and the QB is ready for the next snap. That's the only way it even approaches the NHL with its mostly uninterrupted action.

Posted by: rw-c | January 16, 2009 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Good baseball teams can draw 3million fans a year to their parks. I'd hardly call that, "mid major". Baseball players are the highest paid team sport athletes in America. Mid-major? Really? You may not enjoy it. Football may get better tv ratings, but baseball is THE American game.

OK, the mid-major comment went too far. But when I was a kid (centuries ago), baseball really was the national sport and the most popular. The Buffalo (baseball) Bisons drew over a million fans more than once in AAA. But I still thinks it ranks 4th nowadays, although it could still be above the NBA.
