Mike Green out against Penguins

By Katie Carrera

Coach Bruce Boudreau said defenseman Mike Green will miss a fifth straight game tonight as he will not play in the Capitals' road-trip conclusion in Pittsburgh. Green was struck by a puck near his right ear on Feb. 6 in the most recent meeting against the Penguins and has appeared in only one of the six games since.

Green is on the ice for the morning skate at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, though, and Boudreau said he would go through the regular, tough scratches skate. Boudreau reiterated that Green is continuing to get better but with three days off before Washington's next game following the tilt against the Penguins, the team has decided to play it safe with the defenseman's health.

"He's actually fine. We're overly cautious and you hear a lot of coaches saying this about a lot of different players....These things are being so rampant and people are missing so many games, you just want to make sure that you're fully recovered. We've got three days off before the next game so it doesn't make sense to play him today when you have three more days off. Let's make 100 percent sure that when he's ready Friday against the Rangers, he's ready."

Smart, we can win without him - let's get him completely healthy and rested too. Looking forward to tonight.

Matt252: It is easy to be cordial and bond when the team is winning. The Pens were in the midst of a long winning streak. In contrast the Capitals were in the midst of their worst stretch under BB. The last episode had even the mild mannered Crosby dropping F bombs. Bylsma wasn't looking too relaxed either.

There have been two outdoor games that a handshake did not take place at the end. The Sabres vs Pens and Pens vs Caps. There is a common denominator.

For those that don't know Crosby, the ultimate Captain of the Pens, also skated off without shaking hands when the Senators eliminated the Pens in the 1st round of the 2006-07 playoffs.

I will be at tonight's game--Sec 116. Who else will be there?

Staal's playing, according to the Pens web site.

Should there be any retribution on Cooke for his knee-on-knee on Ovey?

GO CAPS!

Souray cleared waivers

Posted by: ThePat | February 21, 2011 12:02 PM

OK, what happens to him now? The speculation was EDM was waiving him becuase they had an interested party. Instead sems they were just fishing. So is he back on Oilers now or still assigned to Hershey?

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 21, 2011 12:30 PM | Report abuse

The Isles sure knew how to send a loud and clear message to the Pens after the Pens apparently laughed at and mocked them in their previous game.

Will the Caps try to send a similar message after Cooke's knee could've forever altered Ovi's career? Will DJK get a jersey tonight, or will we see a 4th line of Bradley-Steckel-Gordon to strike fear in the Pens? My money is on the latter.....

@tominsocal

he might have to clear waivers again to go back to Hershey but maybe he doesnt. Regardless he'll be able to play for them by this weekend.

"So, Caps fans, are you growing impatient for a deal?"

I don't think "impatient" is the right word Katie. They can make a few deals from the rumors out there, none of which that will help this team.

I still think they need defense. If they are still going to go with the goalies that we have they can't leave them out on an island like they do.

As the Caps will tell you the playoffs are different, defense is king.

Yeah, because the Penguin Scum were laughing at and mocking the Caps after taking a 3-0 beatdown on Super Bowl Sunday with the crowd chanting "Let's Go Packers!"...

Seriously dude, you think before you post your garbage on here???

@ThePat

Are we trying to acquire Paul Stasny?

Posted by: underpants2 | February 21, 2011 12:55 PM | Report abuse

Winter Classic, Super Bowl Sunday...combined 6-1 in both games...Pittsburgh will be angry...Matt Cooke might carry a blade.

@vermontcaps

Cooke never tussles with fighters anyways so having DJK would do nothing to intimidate or stop Cooke. Cooke refuses to fight people.

I will not be on here until after the trade deadline(I might get limited time through this Thursday). I know many on here will miss my fantastic analysis such as cstanton and tmac2yao(said with great sarcasm).

Hopefully the Caps make a few good moves and improve the team. I'm looking forward to see who they will be putting on the ice on March 1.

i dont care who does it, but matt cooke must die tonight.

@underpants

Trying sure, but there are a lot of guys we are trying to get. Like I mentioned earlier the price right now is high for pretty much everyone. So McPhee will need to ante up. To get Stastny I think it would have to be a straight up swap for Semin. They have enough young talent that I dont think prospects would get it done. The Avs GM was on NHLLive and said he doesnt plan on doing anything more until after their game on Tuesday night.

Like I said a couple of weeks ago, the Caps plan all along was to get back from this roadtrip before making a move.

Posted by: capsfansince74 | February 21, 2011 1:07 PM

I wonder if that would be a 10-minute penalty?

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 21, 2011 1:10 PM | Report abuse

It is very stupid by some of you to think that if we won two weeks ago on Sunday and might win today, then we are better than the Pens. Without Crybaby and Shrek, Pens are totally lost. Like imagine we lost Backstrom and Ovie for couple months, and our best players are Laich and Johansson.

Hendricks will take Cooke..not D.J King.

Is Paul Stastny playing center or wing?

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | February 21, 2011 1:24 PM | Report abuse

stastny is a center.. eklund is blogging again about semin rumors. i guess this semin stuff just does not go away.

GMGM had better do something in the near future.....Boston and Atlanta GM's certainly aren't sitting idly by, they are making aggressive moves to improve their teams.

I have a feeling that something may be in the works with the Panthers though....they have pieces and nothing has been heard from them thus far.

@sgm3

Cooke gamely fought Thornton after he concussed Savard last year, so Cooke will in fact fight a "fighter" when the situation dictates it

@capsnut

Do I think before I post my garbage?? You obviously didn't read that I was referecing the Feb. 6th game, not Jan. 1st. Clearly, it is you who has no understanding of the carry-over affect cheap shots have on teams that play AS A TEAM. The Bruins and Isles have both shown they don't let things go unaddressed, but the Caps just seem to let bygones be bygones

Posted by: vermontcaps | February 21, 2011 1:31 PM | Report abuse

BTW,

Can those ask a Cap posts be any more useless??

Posted by: PhilR | February 21, 2011 1:32 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal...it would be a Match penalty which is recorded as 10 minutes for stat purposes...so it would be 5 minutes for the match and 10 minutes for the game misconduct, plus 10 to 20 in the penitentary

Posted by: boomer44 | February 21, 2011 1:45 PM | Report abuse

It took 4 years to trade Kaberle from the Laffs. Semin is a new kaberle about being traded. Whats a point trading Semin for Stasny? If I remember correctly, GMGMcFail said that he is looking 2nd line center for Semin. It doesn't make sense to me

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | February 21, 2011 2:31 PM | Report abuse

you guys sound pretty scairt considering pens are missing 9 reulars including Crosby and Malkin. The caps should win by 3 or 4 goals.
