Isles Limp Into D.C.

The Islanders won't have defenseman Andy Sutton tomorrow, either. He suffered a torn hamstring yesterday and will be out four to six weeks. Click here for the details.

The Isles, meantime, have recalled the other Fata brother, Drew.

With DiPie in net it doesnt matter. They had a good comeback against the Sharks yesterday. Lets hope the Caps can get the 2 points they desperately need.

So I've heard some rumors that the caps are looking at Satan and Hunter. Any updates on these or truth to these rumors?

Too bad Clymer won't be around to renew his acquanitances with the other Fata...

The Isles always play us hard. We are hurting on def too. Let's hope our O' can put up 4-5 goals. Ovie is due for a multi point game.

I listen to XM 204 hockey. They said on Sat night, 15% of the league was out injured or sick..Thats crazy.

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired defenseman Jaroslav Modry from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a third-round draft pick.
Is gmgm at the same meetings as the other NHL GM's, or is he shopping for suits in Florida?

Posted by: someone else who knows | February 19, 2008 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Modry is too old. We want none of that. I dont think the Caps are in a place to get rentals either.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 19, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

They can definitely afford rentals if it just takes picks to get them...

Posted by: Rage | February 19, 2008 4:38 PM | Report abuse

I continue to say and preach patience...i'd rather not get a rental even for a draft pick. The team is competing for a play off spot...that's where this team needs to be this year...i don't, nor should anyone else, expect this team to compete for the cup this year. If they make the playoffs...AWESOME!..if not, the team has taken a definite step forward this year...

What is it with me today? I seem to get the last post of the thread...

From a few moments ago...

Hey, guys! Remember all the chatter here about how much the AO deal was going to be $11 Million? We hit that one on the head, didn't we?

How much Green is shooting for, or what's on the table or not on the table is pure conjecture.

IMHO $4 Million sounds like a lot to me for his services.

Posted by: Greg S. | February 19, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

Last year, the Caps finished in 14th place with 28 wins and 70 points.

In 60 games this year, they are in 11th place with 28 wins and 62 points.

In the post-lockout NHL, it has taken 92 points to make the playoffs in the East. That's 30 points in 22 games. Put another way, it's about 15 wins. I'm not sure if this team can go 15 and 7 over the steach, but let's keep hope alive.

Posted by: Bob | February 19, 2008 5:09 PM | Report abuse

Thomas,

Satan has a no trade clause I think.

Posted by: Steve R | February 19, 2008 5:16 PM | Report abuse

Someone with 87-88 points in the East will get into the playoffs, mark my words. All the bubble teams are playing .500 hockey against each other, meaning points are spread out over like 6-8 teams right now. I think 87 or so points gets the #8 seed

Posted by: Sabah | February 19, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse

Modry might be old but he is a +2 on a bad team. So he is doing ok.. Philly needs help on the blue line right now...so its not that bad a pickup.

Tarik, Thefourthperiod.com has the following 3 players rumored to have interest by the Caps...

V.Prospal C Lightning
M.Satan W Islanders
B.Stuart D Kings

Whats your take compared to Fourthperiod's take on those players???

Posted by: ZackAttack | February 19, 2008 5:34 PM | Report abuse

My D Parings for 2mmrows game...
Green/Morrison
Poti/Jurcina
Schultz/Lepisto

scratch Big John/Trade Eminger/Pettinger!

Posted by: Zack Attack | February 19, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

Of those, Stuart might hold some weight.

The Isles are right back in a playoff hunt so they might not be looking to sell anything at this point. By the way the Lightning is playing right now, I wouldnt be too quick to give up Prospal, even though he is rumored to be unhappy.

Ok let me preface this statement by saying that I totally am addicted to your writing Tarik, you really are the only reliable MSM guy around here for us Caps fans. You are fantastic with your updates etc. I really do appreciate it, and I also repsect the fact that you are a "beat" writer not a sports columnist, your job is to report on events and facts not on opinion etc.

With that being said I was disappointed in todays article for your statement that Milan Jurcina has been "struggling". If you had written this statement a month and 1/2 ago I could see your point. But really I can say that especially when Morrison was injured he was the only guy who was stepping up on the blue line! I am not saying he isn't without flaws, but when you look at his recent performance in comparison to the rest of his friends back there I think "struggling" is a bit off basis. If anything I think you could argue that Mike Green for example has been struggling (except he looks like he is on the upswing again). I think it is safe to say that Jurcina is one of like 3 d-men we have that consistently play the body vs. the puck which is one of my biggest pet peeves for d-men more than any other position. How many times has Schultz been caught standing in front of the net watching the play instead of clearing out the bodies in front of the net. How many times has Green been beat by a forward because he tries to strip them of the puck vs. playing the forwards body off of the puck? Really I can say with certainty that Jurcina has not been struggling as of late, if anything Schultz should be sat he is an absolute liability back there. And if we learned anything from his play in both Boston and at the beginning of this season, he does much better when he is "not" scratched because it messes with his head! With that being said I have to say that Jurcina, Schultz, Green, and honestly even Morrison are all really really young and still have a lot to learn! I know I am rambling and maybe people with disagree with me but I really think that saying that Jurcina was scratched because he is "struggling" is a bit of a stretch and really not fair when you look at everybody else out there!

I'd also like to say again that I love your work Tarik, I just happen to disagree with your statement :)

As far as Tarik's reporting goes, he has to stick to the facts. he has to get reliable sources, and then double check them. Otherwise you would end up seeing a biopic about Tarik in your local theater within a couple years called "Shattered Glass 2: Even more shattered".

"I don't understand why everyone here wants another winger or centerman. We're stumbling over them as it is. Adding more to that slot wouldn't help matters at all.

D wins games and, more importantly playoffs. Goalies win cups. The only reason that Osgood and Hasek look so good is the D in front of them. Hasek's in his 40's and Osgood is 37? Having said that, one of their best D-men is 45..."

Those are the profound and accurate words of Greg S. from Monday's thread. I thought that they were worth repeating. The Caps could really use someone like Adam Foote or Brendan Witt.

What the hell is gmgm doing? If the team is really trying to make a run, he should make this happen.

Every year there is some excuse about why not to do this, or the Caps can't do that. I am tired of excuses. Time to man up!

I also have this question: is there a veteran defenseman in the league that wouldn't want to play here with the Young Guns? Sending headman passes to Ovie isn't attractive?

@Steve R
I know he does for a fact, but that's just what I've heard from thefourthperiod.com. They also said we were looking at Brad Stuart and Jackman I think. But I was just trying to find out what the possiblilties of us getting any of those players are?

Posted by: Thomas | February 19, 2008 6:30 PM | Report abuse

Satan only plays well in contract years. Since this is a contract year, I'd rent him for a low pick, but wouldn't want to sign him long term.

Trent Hunter is a very good hockey player, but not a 1st line scorer.

Posted by: Caps 423 | February 19, 2008 6:40 PM | Report abuse

I'm not for giving away the farm for a rental player UFA either however Teams are and will be making transactions for depth going into the playoffs ahead of the trade deadline. A third round pick for a Veteran D, I don't call that giving away the farm. Then again, we have a GM who passed on a #1 goaltender who, like BB, put his team on his back and has Phoenix in the playoff hunt as well. With Kolzig, Bryzgalov, and BB the division would be the Caps. Oh well, I'm sure gmgm has a plan together. I'm sure he has some kind of last minute trade deadline wizardry in the works. Maybe he has his eye on the Talent right now. Maybe he'll pull another rabbit out of his hat like Ivan Ciernik, Terry Yake, Ivan Majesky, Boyd Kane, Petr Sykora, Rico Fata, or other stellar pick ups like John Gruden (a great pick up), Bates Battaglia, Joey Tenute, Joe Murphy, Chris Hajt, Dean Melanson, Sergei Berezin, Tom Chorske, Josh Green, Jamie Huscroft, A. Salomonsson, Trevor Linden, Darcy Verot, Andrew Cassels, Chris Ferraro, Craig Johnson, Jason Marshall, Doug Doull (that one makes you drool). Who's going to be the next Joel Kwiatkowski, Benoit Hogue, Jim McKenzie, Colin Forbes, Garrett Stroshein, J-F Fortin, Jakub Cutta, Jakub Klepis, Mike Farrell, Brad Norton, Alex Henry, Jonas Johansson, Joe Motzko, Roman Tvrdon, or Chris Corrinet. Or,... Maybe he's in the market for another top notch, blue chip, steady blue liner like Dwayne Zinger, Jason Doig, Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre, Mathieu Biron, Nolan Yonkman, or Dmitri Mironov. I guess only time will tell.

I know it's been said before to let go of Bryzgalov and you're right. He's no Rastislav Stana, Corey Hirsch, Matt Yeats, or Maxime Ouellet.

@Puddin_semin,
The fact is Jurcina played terrible in the Panther's game. I wrote about prior the Tampa game. I called Fehr out too.(http://melvisdog.blogspot.com/2008/02/catscaps-recap-plus-melvisdog-live-from.html)

Milan stood around like he was wearing 20lb weights strapped to his skates. I'm not sure if its a nagging injury or confidence while Fehr ran around like his hair was on fire. Two of many different but very noticable problems in that game.

Posted by: melvisdog | February 19, 2008 6:45 PM | Report abuse

I agree Clarendon. Leonsis said it in the beginning of the year, "We aren't rebuilding anymore". There was only more piece that we needed to make that statement ring true, too bad it didnt come until Thanksgiving time, oddly enough.

BB has a .628 winning %. If he had started the season it would've translated to 102 points. Thats OTT, MTL and NJ territory folks.

Listen, we are all Cap fans here, win or lose. This city needs a play-off appearance for lots of reasons. Im sorry, but almost making the play-offs is NOT making the play-offs, anyway you slice it. Fringe fans, as lame as they are, fill in the empty seats and spend money, money needed to improve our team with players other than HB (no offense to the talented players in Hersey). We need to build momentum for next year, so instead of asking will this team make the play-offs, its what we will do in the play-offs.

Frankly, I'm tired of being in the shadow of the some of the teams in the East. Their fans annoy me. I'm tired of hearing about the Pens the Flyers... and they havent won the Cup recently.

Lets not mortgage the future, but if there is a move to be made to help this team make it in this year... F'ing make the deal. How exciting would it be to have the play-offs in DC?

Someone else who knows,

Wow, that is some ignoble list of talent that has passed through these parts. My spine is still shuddering.

But thank you for pointing out gmgm's purchases at Target when he should be shopping at Neiman Marcus at least occasionally.

I just saw Ted on TV talking about how he is happy for Ovie's accomplishments, but he is still concerned about the team winning the "right games" to make the playoffs. Does gmgm know about this? They are not going to get far without defense.

Thanks for the acknowledgment JSchon, and you more fully expressed the frustration I feel with management.

If what management says is true about the pipeline, it looks like that they have tons to trade with for a good blueliner now that should like to stick around -- not be a rental.

Posted by: Clarendon | February 19, 2008 7:13 PM | Report abuse

I would be all for adding a D-man. Defense does win cups, and ours is young. Still, the best way for young guys to develop is to let them play.

If the price is right, I'd be all for adding a solid second line C or RW. This team is sorely missing Nylander and Clark. I am not in favor of trading high (round 1 or 2) draft picks or promising prospects. The Caps have a lot of young talent but lets face it, we won't be able to keep EVERY single rising young gun in the organization, and the best way to offset that is to keep more young stars in the pipeline.

So like I said, if the price is right a deal could be worth it. Would you trade Pettinger and a 4th for Vinny Prospal even if our biggest need is a D-man? I would.

Would you trade Karl Alzner and a 1st round pick for Prospal? Absolutely not. When it comes to deadline trades, you should never make a blanket statement because you never know what deal might fall into your lap.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | February 19, 2008 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Last season, and yes I know it was last season, Toronto finished 9th with 91 pts. NYI got in w/92 pts so I'm thinkin' that we need at least 95. I say so because Carolina has 20 games left and I think they can do around another 30 pts...maybe. Anyway, it might sound tough but it is making the playoffs. Oh wait, it is 8 teams out of 15! Naaaa...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 19, 2008 7:40 PM | Report abuse

@ Sombero Guy

Well said, the Caps should trade if they don't have to sell the proverbial farm (high draft picks and blue-chip prospects) and the player can make the team better to get into the playoffs. Pettinger, Eminger, and high-round daft-picks for a solid blue-liner, a center, a right-wing sounds good. Alzner for a rental UFA, no way.

Posted by: JIM | February 19, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

What team is going to want petti or Emmy? We barely want them.

PATIENCE! stay the course. in a year, we'll own the division. in 2 the conference. in 3 the WORLD!

Flyers acquire Modry from Kings for pick

Posted by: Re Sign OLIE | February 19, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

@ Lee, some team may want a couple young players with potential that just don't fit in DC, but may fit in elsewhere. Clark never achieved as he could in Calgary, but in DC, he has shined (not this year, damn injury). Pettinger may do well somewhere else. Eminger has the tools to be very good, but he has soured on DC (and DC on him). Also a GM needs to be able to sell players. Sometimes a switch in venue, system really helps out a player. The Caps are not going to get Hossa for Eminger and Pettinger, but they may get a Clark.

Posted by: JIM | February 19, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

For this current team not to make the play-offs would be a huge disappointment. With some national spotlight put on OV and BB this year, not making the play-offs is not an option IMHO.

We have a ton of young players, there is going to be a point to where you cant sign them all.

What are we waiting on? To figure out who is good and who isnt? By then, trading partners have figured it out too. Isnt that what talent scouts are for?

Owning a sports franchise is a risky business. Sometimes you have to act and ask questions later, take a chance, at least calculated ones.

Again, I'm not saying trade prospects for rentals... but if you can get a solid NHL'er for some unproven guys and a draft pick... roll the dice.

I'm not so against adding a D-Man of any contract status at this point. I am of the camp that while Pothier has played better than could be expected, going from 4th d-man to 2nd, I think his career might be over. Shame. Now that he could be a fourth defenseman, he's got post concussion syndrome. It's his 5th concussion now?
Time to go. You'll be missed.

I hear ya man. Most of the Caps' defensemen have been inconsistent lately. But I stand behind my description of Jurcina's recent play. I think Milan's got a lot of potential. But like most young D-men, he's got to figure out how to bring it every night.

Posted by: Tarik | February 19, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

RE: sweaters, the league standard is currently dark at home, light on the road (although it used to be the opposite). That is, however, always subject to change (i.e. individual games may vary - case in point, the winter classic).

Posted by: Boo! | February 19, 2008 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Don't really care about Florida - I think they will stumble in the upcoming games. I am more worried about Carolina and Atlanta... If Carolina loses tonight - we are in good shape - well, we need to win tomorrow night - that is a must. And yes, Alex is due for another multipoint game.

Philly is losing too - I love it!

I think when we get Clark back - things will get better. Not sure if we need anyone else. Sure, it would be nice... but I think we are doing okay. Just wish they played every game like they lost the night before. We are 7-0-1 on the 2nd night of back to back games under BB. It's all mental, right?

Looking at TSN's page on free agency. The Caps are in really good shape compared to most other teams with so few UFA's and so few RFA's (Green and Morrison are must resigns, but the rest are expendible). This should give the Caps flexibility to shop for players at the trade deadline and this summer. A lot of other teams have a lot of UFA's they may want to trade fairly cheap to get something back, so a Pettinger, Eminger, and pick may buy someone of value.

Posted by: JIM | February 19, 2008 9:16 PM | Report abuse

The Caps need another forward who can finish and take some pressure off of Ovechkin. Semin, Kozlov, Pettinger, and Fleischmann combined barely make one competent player at this point. There's no excuse for at least one of those guys not to have at least 20 goals by now.

Kozlov came alive when he got on line one with OV. He needs to play with great players to have good numbers (like when he was with Bure in Florida). Also remember that Semin was still half-lame with that ankle injury for a good 10 games before he hit his stride.

Please use your influence to insist that the Post give the NHL standings by Conference rather than Division. At this time of year, as teams battle for playoff position, Conference standing is critical, more so than Division standing.

Also how about putting the home team Capitals in bold in the standings? 98% of Post readers are looking for the home team in the standings.

LOL!! Guess it is a good night to be a Hab (fan). They must all be on cloud 9! I'd love to have a game like that at the VC ... although I would rather not get down by 5 in the first place ... ;-)

Was watching the Wizards game earlier and during a break in the action, the announcer mentions that Ovie is in attendance. The camera switches over to Alex and at that exact moment, he leans over and lays a big ole kiss on his girl friend. Talk about timing. I guess they were showing it on the big screen at Verizon cause as soon as it was over, she looked up at the screen and appeared to realize she was on camera and smiled.

@Sombrero Guy
"So like I said, if the price is right a deal could be worth it. Would you trade Pettinger and a 4th for Vinny Prospal even if our biggest need is a D-man? I would."

Tampa might do that if Vinny was turning 45 tomorrow and was blind in one eye. Good lord.

@Sombrero Guy

Sorry about that, thought you meant Lecavalier :)

Posted by: Pete | February 19, 2008 11:29 PM | Report abuse

@ Pete Haha no worries

@ Boo - The Prospal comment towards Torts apparently has to do with Prospal getting bumped down a couple lines for a while. They were trying to get Richards going but then moved Prospal back up and he had a few points including the game winner. Apparently he and Torts haven't been seeing eye to eye, which is why a lot of people think he could get moved. I don't know if he is a clubhouse cancer type or if Torts is just a huge jerk

I'd trade for Prospal only to use him to trade for D. There's someone out there that needs a Prospal and will give up a D, though I've heard that D-men are very rare this year.

Sombrero Guy:
Very interesting! Thanks for the info. I will be curious to see what happens with him ...

What exactly are the "right games to win"?
Is there a wrong game to win?
Just an interesting use of words...

TL has lost money every year he has owned this team. He wants the play-offs, he knows the team needs the play-offs. Financially the play-offs would be a economic shoot in the arm for the franchise.

The crazy thing is that some people are content on standing pat, even at the expense of the play-offs.

This team isnt going to win the Stanley Cup, but it could make some noise and win the first round match-up. Who knows in the second round? I mean its not like we swept the Senators, oh wait...

Ovie is due tonight...Lets have some fun.

Let's have some fun, and let's have some wings!

Posted by: Super | February 20, 2008 7:46 AM | Report abuse

Ovie's been sick the last two games. Now he is well. I think he hits the 50 mark tonight!

It could be a long night for Dipietro and the boys...

Forget wings. Everyone gets a (some might say Stupid) Camo-hat tonight. That thing NEEDS to go on the ice.

Pettinger Hattrick would be wonderful, if just to get him some press so we can move him.

@JSchon and others discussing need to get into playoffs. I agree, getting into the playoffs is important even if (like me) you thing this team is not likely to go real deep (I do enjoy being wrong, you know). First, it would be fricking fun! Second, the organIzation would get a little extra revenue and third, getting OV and some of the other young guys some (non-AHL) playoff experience would be very valuable. If you watched the Penns hit the Ottawall last year, you know what I'm talking about. At least they won one (yeah, I'm talking to you Thrashers).

Tonight otta be a nice one.... HD too!

GO CAPS!

By the way...the Habs are terrible hosts! and it was a bitter joy seeing the Penns come back (I love NHL center ice!)

Tonight we should root for TB too... they are selling and wont be in the picture playoff wise and BUF is more of a threat.

So Ovie had the "flu" huh? have you seen this from this morning's paper? "Love is a many splendor thing!"

Malkin just overtook Ovie for the NHL points lead last night. So I think Ovie will be very motivated tonight to get it back. Plus, those Camo hat giveaways are just asking to be thrown on the ice. I found a really good trade deadline resource that list all the UFA's on all NHL teams.

I hope the Caps can resign Green soon. People around the league have been talking about what a great offensive defenseman he will become.

@Clarendon
Any chance I can catch the same flu OV has?

If anyone pulls a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, assist, and fight...My hat is going in.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 20, 2008 10:35 AM | Report abuse

I might even throw my hat in on Ovechkins 3rd shot on goal, or Kolzigs 3rd save.

Hunh, I guess the girl he was with when he came over here went back home. I know I remember Ovie being with another skinny Russian blond when he first showed up. Good for them.

1) @Lowell:
HockeyBuzz is Eklund. Its great for a laugh, but NOT a site to go for real hockey discussion. He charges a fee for any real 'gossip'. Its NOT worth the time, and certainly NOT for money!
