Carlson, Fleischmann among tonight's scratches

Here are some notes from today's morning skate:

-- The Caps forwards have made the shift to white jerseys in the morning skate, but based on who took part in the usual scratches practice, it looks like Matt Bradley, Boyd Gordon, David Steckel, Jason Chimera and Tomas Fleischmann, along with defensemen John Carlson and Brian Fahey, won't be dressing against the Blue Jackets tonight at Verizon Center.

-- The team is continuing to take every precaution with any preseason injuries, Coach Bruce Boudreau said this morning. Varlamov is expected to skate on Monday, while Carlson, who did not practice the past two days, has a bruise. "The doctor said [Carlson] could play if he wanted to," Boudreau said, "but we said forget it; there's no point."

"We're being overly cautious with everything," Boudreau stressed. "[Fleischmann] practicing the last two days he could have played today, but it's preseason. You see so many things [happen]. Varly's history is he's gotten hurt in preseason and it's taken him a month and a half to get back. We don't want that situation to be the same."

-- Michal Neuvirth said he expects to play the whole game against the Blue Jackets.

-- Steve Pinizzotto is the latest to be assigned to Hershey. The Capitals are now down to 28 players in Washington with 17 forwards, eight defensemen and three goalies.

-- Check out the Blue Jackets' projected lineup for the game via the Columbus Dispatch's Puck Rakers blog. Columbus is another team readying to make a trip overseas as the Blue Jackets will open the regular season in Stockholm against the San Jose Sharks.

at least Pinner lasted this long.

He can probably play in the nhl this yr, he has that ability. But with our logjam and the fact he's one of the players who doesn't have to clear waivers (hopefully right?), he's a logical choice to get sent down.

This is a good article about burying players with bloated contracts in the minors.

http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/feed/2010-09/bad-contracts

An interesting note is that players like Redden sent to the minors do not have to pay escrow. So Redden will see an extra $1 million this year while playing in the minors.

Just waiting for the conspiracy theorists to start up with the Flash-isn't-playing-so-that-means-he's-getting-traded talk.

Since I'm too pessimistic to believe a trade is imminent, and too realistic to believe that getting scratched is meaningful, I need you guys to buoy my spirits. Rev up the talk.

fahey is a decent two way dman, a tad undersized for a dman but will compete. Mark French likes him a lot because of that. He offers some veteran stability and can move the puck but he doesn't mind getting his nose dirty.

Do they still not open the doors until six? That has always seemed weird to me, seems the doors should be open two hours prior to give people time to hit concessions/shop/restroom prior to warm-ups which I refuse to miss.

THink about this...with King and Hendricks (more skill than bradley)...

I don't see the value of Bradley, and Gordon...

Remember George said the kids are outplaying the vets...

of the 875 votes on the previous toughness poll, 2% said they didn't like the Caps grittier team. If my math skills are correct, that's like 17 fans who said that.

i wonder if they didn't like it because they thought we're turning into some goon team, or they voted no because they wanted to see an even grittier team.

i am merely a humble ambassador of the game.

"Does anyone think that Bradley maybe on his way out?"

he's expendable. And probably a tad too expensive for what he adds to a team. But he's a good soldier for now and he's been the only real consistent grit for the Caps since day 1 (excluding Ovy). He outlasted Clymer and Sutherby. I like Brads and instead of seeing him shipped out I'd like to see Pinnizotto get recalled a few times this yr and give Brads a few nights off.

Fahey played the other night in Boston. I watched the feed. I thought he played okay. He was paired with Sloan, so I was mostly noticing how bad Sloan was.

Posted by: hkyfan20110 | October 1, 2010 1:28 PM | Report abuse

They need to get down to 25...so that should be easy...

1 goalie is gone.

now two more:

Fahey
Boyd Gordon to IR (he is better on that roster)

So now we can keep them all...at least for the first 10 games till we find consistency.

And if we dump Fleishman, all is well (with Sloan next in line to go)

Couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a playful joke about Cstanton's character inconsistency: he's known on the boards as a take-no-@#*$, hard-nosed Grinch, yet he openly admitted that he watched a TV show about 6 whining girls. This guy has a soft spot!

Posted by: struggler | October 1, 2010 1:34 PM | Report abuse

a moment of respect for yet another nhl warrior hanging up his gloves, err i mean skates. To play the way he played despite his size was quite an accomplishment. And even though he got tagged as just a dirty player, DT took as much as he gave out. And he was a great player in the WHL but probably fell in the draft because of his size.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=335903

Tucker was a "love him, or hate him" type player, but as he looks back, he has few regrets, even though at times he knows he straddled the line.

"Obviously things happen that you regret, but I left it all out there."

old school Philly fans probably hated him more than anyone else. Makes me chuckle.

i wouldn't call it a soft spot. But you do a lot of things for girls that you wouldn't ordinarily do... Which is why I'm currently listening to Simon and Garfunkel's "Flowers never bend in the rainfall". And why I've watched Steel Magnolias 2 times.

Phil,

You're going to be impressed when you see MaJo on the ice. The kid super fluid and quick. Fun to watch.

DJK is actually not a bad skater at all for what he is. He obv likes to hit, but he brings a lot more than Brashear did. And not a knock on Brash- but more so kudos to Dwayne J. King.

Haven't seen Hendricks, but most def looking forward to it from what I've read in the last few days.

“You know what I like about him?” said Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock – Crosby’s Team Canada coach – of Ovechkin. “He’s authentic, he’s real and he loves hockey – and he plays it hard.”

that's what they should say about every hockey player in the NHL. In retrospect I still wouldn't trade Crosby and Malkin for Ovechkin. He makes watching this team bearable on most nights.

Unless they advertise earlier door times for special occasions, 6 it is.

The Rocket is an awesome pregame spot, short jump across the street to the phone booth. You get a nice mix of Caps fans there, booze are fairly priced (for DC), not overly crowded like the Turtle/Bar Louie/RFD tend to get.

Speaking of which...under 3 hours til Rocket Bar....wooo wooo.

it depends less on King and more on the Hendricks and other types who are likely to see more time. IF they can squeeze a spot on this team.

Maybe over the course of the yr the roster will take a very different look. Should be an interesting year.

but i agree, if the only addition is King and he doesn't get much ice time the upgrade in toughness is minimal to none, esp considering our D is even softer than it was last yr with Mo gone.

Rocket is pretty awesome. It's your basic bar (3 bars actually), but has pool tables, dart boards, shuffleboard, big buck hunter, and smells stale. It's not a restaurant though, but it does let you bring food in. It's awesome for pregaming, but I might opt for somewhere else if you've got the little ones with you. Not even sure they'll let you in actually. They're a bit fickle. Sans kids- highly recommended.

Posted by: casser | October 1, 2010 3:19 PM

@casser:

FTR, this is not intended as an "expert" answer--only an educated guess based on observation. In othe words, just my opinion.

I think the answer is probably yes.

Skill and fast reflexes and reach and athleticism are all important qualities for an NHL goaltender to have.

That said, poise, focus and situational awareness are of equal importance, IMO. A goaltender has to be able to stay cool no matter how much he is harrassed in the crease, and must always remain focused on the puck while still being fully aware of what is going on around him. A goaltnder who has these qualities can thus position himsel;f better, and not be so reliant on making the "ten-bell" save.

In short, Varly is the more exciting goaltender, to be sure. But IMHO he must both a) stay on top of his game and b) stay healthy enough to be able to play his game in the first place, in order to retain the #1 spot.

If Varly fails to do either of these things, then yesthe door is wide open for Neuvy to become #1. And the Caps should be OK either way so long as they play responsibly in their own end.

no way buddy, i've never been THAT whipped. and I watched Magnolias with 2 different ones. The first one was excusable. I owed her big-time. I showed up at her parent's house for dinner slightly high and made an ___ of myself. That was their first impression of me. Not too favorable. And they were strict southern baptists.

The 2nd time, I have no excuse for. I think my girl dozed off and I still kept watching it. I've seen worse.

I have thought that the goalies were going to split fairly close to 50/50 until the playoffs were unless Neuvirth is vastly outplaying Varly, Varly will start in the playoffs because of his NHL playoff past (10-9 2.49 GAA 91.5 SV%).

maybe MP85 should take a page out of Dino's playbook. he would have a job, for sure on the big team. they don't play a lot of hockey like that anymore.

beer time! have a good one, all.

Nice, Boyle punked his a** and semin didn't do squat.
------

more like his teammates didn't help him out. Semin got slewfooted down. He was trying to punch Boyle from a seated position. I just like the hit and see no reason except passivity for why he doesn't use his strength and frame and speed to put more guys down like that. Same way Datsyuk does.

and to cap off his illustrious HOF career, one of the last brawls Dino got into. Against a young rookie named.....Sheldon Souray! And of course Daneyko who was in the middle of ever scuffle around the Devils net it seems.
