Johnson Injured

Goalie Brent Johnson did not return for the start of the second period after appearing to tweak his leg while making a save in the final seconds of the first. I have not received an update on his condition, but I hope to get one after the game.

Johnson appeared to get hurt when he extended his left leg to stop (I believe it was Ryan Bayda) on the doorstep. He immediately came up lame but finished out the period.

The timing, obviously, couldn't be worse for Johnson or the Capitals considering the way things have been going lately.

Ovie!!!!
Was it a sweet goal or a tap in?!!
Can't wait to see the highlight

So does this mean I have to miss the 1st period from now on for Ovie to score a goal that matters?

Am I the only one holding my breath?

Posted by: Boo- | November 12, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

No, Boo. I am not happy. This is not cool. Not cool at all.

Posted by: kittypawz | November 12, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Not fair to Johnny AT ALL. He's playing so well, the timing here couldn't be worse.

Sigh.

I just hope it's precautionary. Hope hope hope. Let us know. Tarik.

Also, Ovi's goal wa a sweet one. He had the goalie beaten cold. Leighton didn't have a chance.

Juice is a stain.

Posted by: _jordan | November 12, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Somehow I ended up back on the previous post! Ugh ... anyway, from the previous:

Does anyone know what's in the box that Juice wants so badly?

I'm thinkin' that Lav will pull the keeper if we score again ...

Bring it on boys!

Posted by: Boo- | November 12, 2008 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Come on Semin! you must get a hat trick :)

Well, I missed the first period because I was in graduate class.

Some period I missed! Go Caps!

Juice is trying to get cut or something. You can't naturally be that bad

Posted by: Leeguru | November 12, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

We need to finish what we started.....go get em in the third! We need a solid 20 minutes and button this one up!!!

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | November 12, 2008 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I am really bummed for Johnny. I hope he is healthy. I also hope this can help Jose get on track...he looked great in the 2nd.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 12, 2008 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Hey Juice's last penalty was worth it. The refs let Stahl ice and kick Theodore who was down for a while. Stahl is having a pity party for himself and took it out on Jose. The refs didn't make a call on Johnson getting whacked and then Jose, so I'm glad Juice knocked that punk into the glass and then onto the ice. The refs have to call that stuff or players will take matters into their own hands.

I got to think if Johnny was badly hurt he would be getting treatment, or X-Rays.

I hope it is just precation. Anyone have a medical background to make us feel better about him being on the bench?

Posted by: SA-Town | November 12, 2008 8:44 PM | Report abuse

I am not certain , but i think Brent got hurt earlier, when the Canes were on the power play. He was looking uncomfortable.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | November 12, 2008 8:44 PM | Report abuse

What's more upsetting than the fact that they let players murder goalies now is the fact that they just let it happen, and if a defenseman retaliates, he gets the penalty. Not only does the forward know he can get the goalie off edge, the forward knows if anyone does anything to him his team gets a power play.

It's that kind of crap that makes me miss the days of clutch grab, self policed hockey.

From prior thread:

The Caps are taking far too many penalties, but I'm glad to see the way the PKers are agressive instead of laying back like they have been.

Nice stickhandling by Brashear behing the Canes' goal. Amazing cycling going on in the Canes' zone.

The Caps don't need more goals tonight but I hope they keep the offensive pressure on.

Come on Semin, only four ponts?
Let's see that hat trick!

I agree. The 3rd penalty against Juice was worth it. don't let them take liberties.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | November 12, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Johnson looks like he is still on the bench in his gear so if that is the case, it is precautionary. They wouldn't have him out there if he wasn't able to go back in. He would be in the back getting worked on or iced.

Posted by: CapsSkins | November 12, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

all 4 goals result from the first line. ovie 1goal 1assist backie 3assists green 1goal 1assist semin the star with 2goals and 2assists. ovies goal a slapper from semin, semins goal a swet slapshot on a sharp angle at the side of the net. semins other goal a hard slapper from a nice feed from ovie that slipped by canes goalie. greens goal a classic green PP goal. slapshot from point with laich screening the goalie.

theo has been great in goal. had a HUGe save on staal on the PK. Johnny was awesome too. our PK is looking sharp. Jurcina is very undisciplined this game. we look great!

AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH ERSKINEEEEE, hes driving me crazy/insane

Posted by: rachel216 | November 12, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else not getting sound on the FiOS feed of the game?

Posted by: ThomasJefferson | November 12, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Johnson went into the game with a tweak? Those last couple PK opps in the first he seemed a little slower than normal laterally.

Of course, this comes from my years of experience watching medical shows.

I'm certain Papa Panzer has been coaching Poti on the slapshot.

@rachel

erskine has been significantly better in the past 2 games. he's playing smart, not taking penalties, and keeping odd man rushes from deveolping. he's doing great compared to usual

Posted by: capsfan387 | November 12, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

i think the caps are doing too much... trying to make extra passes...just shoot it!

Well this is a HUGE win for so many reasons. Back in #1, a win on the road, all the big boys are performing, Jose looks good ... yup, this is a great win. Let's hope it continues at home on Friday!

Posted by: Boo- | November 12, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Boo-. I agree. That was absolutely fantastic. The only quibble I've got with their play at all tonight is the penalties. WAY too many.

Posted by: kittypawz | November 12, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Great game tonight. Contrary to what the announcers were saying BJ got hurt when he gave up the goal. He slid across and jammed his skate into the post and it caused his knee to jam. He was a little slow and cautious the rest of the period after that. At least thats my opinion.

That first line was dominant and other than taking too many penalties it was about as good an effort as there could have been.

Posted by: ThePat | November 12, 2008 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Boo -- proud to be an honorary member.

Great 60 minute performance by the Caps!

And now we know how to avoid Jose's early goals against: don't put him in until the second period!

Sloan made a couple of poor outlet passes, but overall I like him.

To the Green bashers: You should have heard the Carolina announcers:

"Great skater."
"Will be a perennial all-star."
"A special player."
"Will one day win the Norris Trophy."

And to the JT bashers:

Maybe BB knew what he was doing to make JT sit and sit and sit and then you throw him in. I recall Ranford tweaking a groin opening night 1997 and Olie goes in and never looks back.

This team still needs a veteran Stay-at-Home like Joe Reekie. Maybe we can package Kozlov and Jurcina for "Reekie" and something and then put Fehr in the lineup.

Posted by: tominfl1 | November 12, 2008 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I thought it was sort of odd that the Carolina announcers kept harping on Semin not learning English, they said it every other time he touched the puck.. but whatever.

Posted by: amorris525 | November 12, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

that's because they are jealous that Semin will will the mvp and say thanks in Russian

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 12, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Who cares what the Carolina announcers say about Green. Sometimes he's good, sometimes he's atrocious. The last time these two teams played the Canes announcers were calling Ovechkin's hits a tad on the dirty side. Should we believe them for that too? Hope we see Fehr in there. Kozloaf was invisible tonight.

Posted by: cstanton1 | November 12, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

sorry if this has already been said, but is anyone else having problems trying to vote for the all stars? i cant get past the birthday page.... wtf do i have to enter my birthday for? who cares?!

Posted by: BlondeCapsFan | November 12, 2008 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov invisible? That would explain how you didn't see him cycling by himself time and again.

Posted by: Steve_R | November 12, 2008 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Koz was definetly not invisible tonight. He was in total conrtol several times on the boards with the "cycle" going. Kudos to JT.....awesume job! Who got the hard hat tonight??

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | November 12, 2008 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Warning to the rest of the league: Ovie is BACK!!! (his goal was vintage Ovie!)

MVP, this year's model: Semin!!
(he nearly has as many assists as Cindy "Secondary Assist Leader" Crosby.

And I agree: those comments about Semin's English were nitpicking. He's 24 and his focus is hockey - not trying to become bilingual. Gaining fluency in a second language can be very difficult for some and requires a full-time effort. Somehow I don't think those announcers appreciate that.

Posted by: CAP-lanta | November 12, 2008 11:16 PM | Report abuse

I hate Theodore, I just hope Johnsons injury is nothing that will keep him out long term.

Posted by: crazylegdesigns | November 13, 2008 10:10 AM | Report abuse

Kozlov was not invisible, he cycled the puck strongly, had 4 shots on net and made a couple very nice passes to set up his line mates for what should have been goals.

Jurcina doesn't deserve the hate. He's one of the few D-men we have that takes the body regularly, and unlike Sloan and Erskine, Juice can skate it or pass it out of the zone with success. Erskine's an icing machine and Sloan panics more often than not with the puck.

Semin's a beast! And he does speak a little english, I've seen him more than once chatting with his non-Russian teammates. Hate to see Johnny go down, but great to see Jose play strongly in relief.

Best game of the year. Nice to see Backstrum break out as he hasn't had a goal in 20 games going back to last season. When I picked Brent up for my fantasy team he only had a 5% ownership rate. Now it is up to 17%. I'll bet it will be much higher soon as more people see how well he's doing. Is that 5 games in a row with 2 or fewer goals? You'll win a lot of games at that rate. Are the Caps working on some kind of marketing gig involving the two Alex's?
