Kozlov Out (Update)

Viktor Kozlov did not return for the start of the second period. I have inquired about his status and will provide an update when I hear something,

Also, I caught up with GM George McPhee between periods and he said that Brent Johnson could need surgery on his hip. At this point, it's up to Johnson whether he will continue to play through the injury.

Update:A team official said the injury to Kozlov is a groin tweak. He may return.

come on boys kill this off, 3-1 is fine...3-2 is not

Posted by: _stevo | February 3, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Talking about stupid penalties, why did Steckel do that while on the PK in the offensive zone? Non-sense.

Posted by: mauree | February 3, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

How obnoxious is that rink PA announcer??

Posted by: tess2201 | February 3, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

This color announcer (I realize is a NJ one) but come one...he is talking about "our boys" and "us"...come on. If Joe B is doing that, forgive me.

RE: VS color announcer - he is NOT the Devils' color guy - I believe he is the Boston Bruins' announcer. The Devils team is Doc Emerick for play by play and Glenn "Chico" Resch who does color - and this is definitely NOT Chico.

Posted by: DevilsCapsGal | February 3, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

sorry there he is

Posted by: bestpilotonearth | February 3, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Anyone--
Didn't VS last year do a bunch of double-headers? You know, east game early followed by a western game. Doesn't seem like they're doing that this season. Wonder why. I like watching west games once in a while (and I don't have Center Ice so that's not an option).

Posted by: tess2201 | February 3, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

DevilsCapsGal:
He sounds like he is from Boston.

Thanks for correcting me. Shoulda picked up the BOS accent.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | February 3, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

nice one Capt Kirk :)

I liked this period a lot. Fast pace, good game, not many chances for NY. And most important: the Caps hassled all 20 minutes.
Hope they'll keep it up in the third.

Posted by: mauree | February 3, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Have Joe B or Andy Brickley even mentioned that Kozlov has been out? If so, I missed it.

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | February 3, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Capt_Kirk_in_AZ:
Arh, arh, arh! :-P

mauree:
You're right NY had NOOOOO chances that period ... by NJ had a goal. ;-)

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 3, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Joe B. said something like "it looks like the Caps bench is short" and then they said something about Steckel going off limping from taking a shot to the leg, but they didn't say Kozlov. I figured it out after a while though.

This would be bad if he is out for any amount of time. I think the top line is much better when he is on it.

Posted by: WVPhil | February 3, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Yeah they said about 5 mins into the period that the caps bench was shorthanded, I dont think they said who thou

groin tweak for koz...do we risk his return in the 3rd and doing more than tweak?

update: groin tweak, may return

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I heard him say that the bench was short but he didn't say it was Kozlov. I guess it's too much to ask of him.

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | February 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

no we have neough problems with groin injuries this year, just keep him out

Posted by: _stevo | February 3, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

I think we can hear everything because one of the refs is leaving his mic on. alot of that talk is either the refs yelling about no off sides or players talking to the refs about something.

or there is just a mic there near the bench/ice

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 3, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

On my book, the first star on this game is going to JOE B!!! I know he hasn't been perfect, and I am always on his case, but darn he is doing a decent imitation of a play-by-play man - AND THAT my friends is extraordinary for that man.
The colorman is not bad neither. Jesus. no talk outside hockey by this two guys tonight.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | February 3, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Good win, Nylander shooting who would've thought it? Theodore quietly looking very solid. 70 points already I love it!

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 3, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Great game Caps.
Now lets break them up!!! LOL.

Posted by: opita1 | February 3, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Two points, and two important ones at that!

...and a chance for us to see Ovie's 200th goal at VC on Thursday. :)

As others have mentioned, for those with Center Ice, the Penguins are indeed losing to the Habs, 3-1 with 15:15 remaining.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 3, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

WooT! EXCELLENT WIN! :-) 70 points, and three ahead of the Devils. This is great, and I am psyched!

Posted by: irockthered | February 3, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Cool. We've been getting the points that we need so far.

Nice to see Stecks getting some ink from Engbloom.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 3, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Huge win, beating the team most think is playing the best hockey right now, just after taking to the defending cup champs and who many think will repeat, and just before that takin it to OT with the first place team in the league (and really out playing that team but for two fluky-ish goals)

Now just start taking to the bottom feeders (LA thur) and the SE (Fla on Sat) and this team may be able to make up some ground on Boston, though it will take a lot to catch them.

Posted by: QuintenD | February 3, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

And HOLY COW! Theo at .941 on the night? WOW! I am suitably impressed! :-)

Posted by: irockthered | February 3, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

This was a great game. Even Schultz played well :p

Posted by: mauree | February 3, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

and MaF gave up a shorty too, see Theo's no the only one, haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 3, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Come on Boo, come into the light and admit Theo played well :D

Posted by: mauree | February 3, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

that haha is towards MaF, if anybodys wondering

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 3, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Actually, Fla is only one point behind Carolina and Anderson is 3rd in save % so they will not be easy if we are not focused. If we call it in on Sat, it could be a major downer.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 3, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Whew! I'm breathless just from watching!

I can't remember the last time I've seen a game played pedal to the metal for 60 minutes.

Great game by the Caps, except for Steckel's penalty. You don't ever want to take a penalty in the offensive zone, but taking one while down a man. I'm sure Steckel realizes it and that he also heard about it between periods. Until that penalty Stecks and Gordo were doing a marvelous PK job of pressuring the Devils.

Joe B

YEAH!

Posted by: NatyBG | February 3, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

mauree:
LOL!! :-P I can admit it when Jose plays well! I know he is capable of it, I'm just not convinced of his ability to play that way consistently. But let's not go there now - let's just bask in the glory of another big win! GO CAPS GO!!!

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 3, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

it's a great time to be a Caps fan!

Joe! Where you been hidin'? The girls were lookin' for ya!! ;-)

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 3, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

The most amazing part to me is the fact that Bill McCreary was one of the zebras, and the penalties were still evenly called, and fairly low. ;-)

Posted by: irockthered | February 3, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

All this talk before the game about the Devils 8 game winning streak and we went into thier barn and manhandled them, what a win!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 3, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

What I saw of the game was great! Way to go, Nyls!
Somebody really awesome just sold me a set of tickets to the Pittsburgh game on the 22nd! Yay! Hockey in person! Add in Hockey n Heels and I'm officially inhumanly stoked about that weekend!

6 of those 8 Devils wins were against non-playoff teams if the playoffs started today. We see what happens when they play an elite team.

Boo:
I've stayed away after the comments back and forth got too negative for a while in the past week or so.

I won't mention any names, but if anyone dares say Green is not great on defense, he can expect a close to expletive laden response.

I wanted to stay out of the line of fire.

Hey, it's nice to be missed.

Is my Booprobation up yet?

Posted by: rw-c | February 3, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

jmu_capsgirl: Hurray! Hopefully that will be a good game, because it will probably be on NBC. I hope they don't change the start time any earlier...

In other news, FSN Pittsburgh makes me throw up a little bit when I watch it. If there are any other Center Ice subscribers here, you probably already understand what I'm talking about. :P

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | February 3, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I found myself chanting "Norris, Norris, Norris" when Green slam dunked his goal. My son was looking at me funny.

GregAnnapolis, I know! Especially since Directv decided they're not going to give me NBC. I had to go to a friends party to watch the super bowl.
I refuse to cheer for the downfall of the Pens, but I am cheering mightily for the success of any team playing them.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | February 3, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Boo:
I'm not the one making that response!

After the last three games, I'm not complaining about anyone, not even Steckel for that penalty. He just got a little too aggressive during that otherwise excellent high pressure PK.

I should save the DVR to show anyone who thinks the NFL (play for five seconds, then 30 seconds before next play) is a better game than the NHL.

Posted by: rw-c | February 3, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

also since GMGM said it's up to Johnny to decide whether or not he wants surgery on the hip, we need Theo's solid play to get them going

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 3, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

meant keep them going, not get

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 3, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

The Pens announcers are garbage. Biased as hell too...that's one thing I've always liked about Joe B is he tries to be as objective as possible when doing games.

Not much to complain about the last few efforts from our boys. It's time to stop worrying about where Canes and Panthers are and just keep winning games, put some distance between us and anyone but Boston. I don't know if you can overcome the lead they have, but let them duke it out with whichever team gets hot enough to get the #8 seed then deal with Mon/Philly/NJ whoever ends up in the 4 or 5 seed.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 3, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

BTW, I am a little disappointed in my fellow Americans for not taking exception when UKDave said, "You Americans and your made up words. Why can't you just respect the language we gave you?" First of all, he was referring to a word that GMGM used (Hello?!? Canadian!). Secondly, Mr. "Ye Olde English is My First Language" makes up Daveisms all of the time. Lastly, what's up with Brits and their extraneous vowels (colour?), juxtaposed letters (theatre?) and Zs replaces with Ss (appetiser?). Dave, Dave, Dave ... when will you ever learn?

Oh, yeah. Dave, dude, you've got to clean up your language arts act. All those S's in place of Z's. Not gonna fly here. Same for the U's. Completely eradicate them from your knowledge base. :D

OK everyone, I got bored and created the Caps Season Series chart. You wouldn't believe how annoying the infamous "third point" (for OT loss) makes that task.

Anyway, I don't really have any analysis to go along with it, so I'll just give the address: http://kurly.net:666/CapsStats.txt

Hopefully someone finds it useful. If you find anything incorrect in it, please let me know. (And don't worry, I'm *NOT* going to re-post this silly thing in every thread. I hate that just as much as you.)

Rangers lose tonight 2-1 in a shootout with Atlanta. Too bad they tied the game in the last minute of regulation to get a point. They are now 7 points back of the Caps.

Greg:
Nice chart - thanks for sharing!

Carolina trying to be nice to the Canucks, apparently. Canucks up 2-0 after the first. What I've seen of the game is not particularly exciting.

Nylander upping his trade value is a veryt good thing.

Move him now McPhee :)

With Clark now out for the season and Nylander playing better, the Caps should keep him and then bring up Alzner for the Playoffs. Nylander can be a very dangerous player when he is on and he is now!

Another great game tonight. Dominated a very good NJ team for large parts of the game.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what Boudreau has done with the lines recently. Gives us great balance with 3 good offensive lines.

I didn't comment on this before and it will sound harsh, but I was kinda happy to read that Clark will have surgery and is out for the season. I'm sorry, but he was taking up a valuable roster spot and tying up money under the cap. Fehr is a much more effective player.

If Johnson opts for surgery this will surely mean that Varlamov will become Theodore's backup once he recovers from his own injury. To me that's also good news. If Theo hits a slump it's Varlamov time, baby!

Anyhoo, I'm in a great mood. Was a very fun game to watch.

BTW, during last night's NHL on the Fly Dave Reid called Mike Green the NHL defenseman with the biggest upside. Right on. Trade cstanton1 to the Flyers blog!

can't wait for all the haters to jump on the nylander bandwagon....same as jose, fehr

Once again , Caps beat the 'Leet...

--Way to grind Fehr & Laich--work hard and you WILL be rewarded
--Brashear was working really hard tonight=good on the forecheck
--Based on Greg's chart, the only East teams against which we don't (yet) have at least .500 record are PHI and FLA...Bring it On!!
--Way to go Nyls!...Trade? not in a million years!
--Caps win = delight
--Penguins loss = bonus Sch├Ądenfreude
--Green to win Norris Trophy?...I said it first!!!!

FEAR THE WEAGLE! CAPS ALL THE WAY!

OOPS...that's > .500 by POINTS vs. PHI.

If Brent Johnson is out with the hip injury, we could be seeing the advent of Simeon Varlamov in Washington a year ahead of schedule.

Posted by: leopard09 | February 4, 2009 10:32 AM | Report abuse

Wouldn't a long-term Johnson injury set up a crucial decision for GMGM?

Obviously, Jose will carry the bulk of the work in the playoffs. But what if he gets hurt? Are they ready to put what is looking like a real chance to advance deep in the playoffs on the shoulders of Varlamov or Neuvirth?

Also, will they be able to give Jose some time off down the stretch in the regular season to make sure he's not dog tired? There might not be much to play for at the end of the regular season and that may be helpful.

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a veteran backup goaltender.

I found myself chanting "Norris, Norris, Norris" when Green slam dunked his goal. My son was looking at me funny.

Posted by: meagle | February 3, 2009 9:47 PM

Thats probably because your son understands that winning a Norris trophy has at least a little something to do with how you play in your own end :)

I can't argue with Dave from the UK. After 8 years of Bushisms, I'm not quick to be judging anyone else about butchering the English language. =/
