Laich suffers injury to face (updated)

I did not see how exactly Brooks Laich was hurt moments ago, but he came off the ice in obvious pain, covering his left eye/side of his face. He walked into an area that is off limits to media, called for head athletic trainer Greg Smith and then dropped to his knees.

Coach Bruce Boudreau, several teammates and the training staff rushed to his side and got him back up to his feet.

That's all I know right now. I'll have an update as soon as more information is available.

Update:Laich was hurt when a shot by John Carlson hit the crossbar and deflected into his cheekbone area as the players messed around after practice. Early indications are that the injury is not critical. I'm sure Boudreau will address it soon.

Update:Boudreau indicated that Laich, who is one of the team's toughest players and has not missed a game since the 2006-07 season, has a cut under his left eye and is going to the hospital to get checked out.

"He got hit by a puck off the crossbar and post," Boudreau said. "He's going to [the hospital] to get sutchered up. I'm sure because it's in the face, they'll do all the precautionary stuff, do the X-ray and do whatever they have to do."

When Boudreau was told that Carlson took the shot, he cracked, "He'll be playing for Hershey this weekend."

Carlson was one of the players who checked on Laich moments after the winger left the ice. The rookie D-man obvisouly felt really bad.

I hope to have another update later.

A good reason not to be screwing around after practice.

@ ihockett01

Funny and a good observation!

Once we clinch 1st seed, all players should live in a bubble/jail cell until playoffs.....

we cant afford contact with the outside world...too risky.

Send Carlson back to Hershey.

Brooks don't skate with his face. I bet that mother hurt but no biggie: He'll mask up if he has to, take a shot of whiskey, and play. Don't mess with appendages - faces?

Posted by: saintex | March 23, 2010 12:19 PM | Report abuse

rub some dirt on it and get back out there

Oh no! Not the dreaded upper body injury.

he does seem to quake in fear an awful lot!

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 23, 2010 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Not the FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE! And yeah, if he can skate, he's going to play. Heal quickly, Brooksie!

Wear a freeaking faceshield/visor already. Keep your teeth and let the plexiglass take the impact (yeah, not all shots, but enough to matter). Doesn't seem to bother OV, Backs, and Semin -- much less Green.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | March 23, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Haha. Take it easy boys, you still have playoffs to play.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 23, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

Nooooo....not the face - Laich is soooo McDreamy......

Seriously - I hope it is not a significant injury and that it doesn't impact his playing time.....

Is it Wednesday yet?

Not the face!!! Women everywhere will weep!

Posted by: mrszilla | March 23, 2010 12:47 PM | Report abuse

And from last thread, quit worrying about a team offering contracts to Backstrom.

He is going to resign.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 23, 2010 12:49 PM | Report abuse

Hope that Brook's injury is of the minor variety and he'll be back soon....don't need to risk him playing tomorrow with an injury that could be worse if he takes an inadvertent high stick. How many more hours until Wednesday?

LOL @ spelling of "sutchered" ... yet more proof that all it takes to be a blogger is an inability to spell.

Carlson needs to get the death penalty.

Backstrom on NHL Live.

This woman is not weeping... I thing Brooks is dead sexy and his "battle wound" and possibly resulting scar could not take away from that. Poss. even make him better looking...

That being said, I hope he's ok and can play tomorrow.

Laich is one of the best looking Caps players!...at least he was :)

Posted by: capscoach | March 23, 2010 1:16 PM | Report abuse

amberlynne said it best! My first reaction after reading that was "NOOOOO NOT HIS FACE!!!!!!!" At least his eyes are still beautiful.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 23, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Thank you, snowboarder, for catching the misspelling of sutured.

Posted by: OvechkinFan92801 | March 23, 2010 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Sorry to hear about Brooksie, but the scar will make him look more like a legit hockey player and not a prettyboy Calvin Klein underwear model.

By the way, is it Wednesday yet???

Upon hearing about the injury news, Colin Campbell and Bettman are going to suspend John Carlson. They are waiting to see how long Laich is going to be out to see how severe the suspension should be.

Our boys are certainly taking the "hits" to the face. Last weekend, Semin gets cut above the lip in both Friday's game and in Sunday's game. And now Laich gets hit by a puck in practice.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | March 23, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

@Tarik:"sutchered up"? Methinks you might want to run that one past a spell-check. ;) I suspect the word you're looking for is "sutured", synonym: stitched.
