Let the trash talk begin: Plekanec vs. Theodore

Well, that didn't take long.

Canadiens leading scorer Tomas Plekanec was quoted in today's editions of La Presse as saying:

"It's not as though we were up against Brodeur or Miller. They don't have a dominant goalie. And when you look at the season, you realize that this matchup of goalies is useful for our team. I think you could say that our goalies have been better than theirs."

As you might imagine, Caps Coach Bruce Boudreau and Jose Theodore had something to say about that.

Asked about Plekanec's comments, Theodore shot back: "Tomas who? Jagr? Oh, Plekanec, okay. I thought you meant Jagr."

"They are two of the best goalies in the league," he added. "They got the edge. Halak [and] Price are two solid goalies. I'm just lucky to be part of a good team. That's pretty much it."

Boudreau said: "No they're not, they're facing Jose. I'll take Jose's record the last 23 games over those two guys."

And to think Game 1 is still two days away.

how do the nhl playoffs work? is the second round matchup set like a bracket or do they re-seed it each round?

Wow, sore losers already. :P

follybeach:

They reseed each round. It's not a bracket.

Posted by: chevychase10 | April 13, 2010 1:37 PM | Report abuse

@follybeach

They are re-seeded in the 2nd round so if there aren't any upsets it would be the Penguins.

The NHL playoffs are a bracket format.

Shut him down and the Habs don't win a game.

That should shut him up...sweep the Frenchies.

ESPN:

Boudreau said Backstrom, who did not take part in the morning skate, was injured during Sunday's regular-season finale against the Boston Bruins but would not specifically say what was ailing the star forward.

Backstrom

Theodore

"He's not feeling well and is questionable for Thursday," Boudreau said.

When asked if Backstrom was suffering from food poisoning Boudreau said he didn't know.

"He's questionable. He's sick," the coach said.

Sorry, I'm an idiot. I was thinking "not bracket, unlike most sports" and somehow typed "bracket."

Posted by: Section104 | April 13, 2010 1:42 PM | Report abuse

They are re-seeded not bracketed. The NBA is bracketed.

Posted by: Gambrills4 | April 13, 2010 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Your time is coming Plekanec...very soon. The Caps will teach you the meaning of respect in a couple days.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 13, 2010 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Stay cool Caps! Just beat them on the ice, don't respond to this crap!

Posted by: kcbrichmond | April 13, 2010 1:47 PM | Report abuse

I having been paying attention to the Habs that much this year but is Peice still the same headcase he was last year? I remember watching games where he would let in a softie and the rest of the game he would go to crap. An I think it was even worse up at the Bell Centre, they would get on him bad up there.

Posted by: ludeman95 | April 13, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

That should say haven't.

Posted by: ludeman95 | April 13, 2010 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Section104 is wrong, chevychase10 is right. The NHL re-seeds after each round. They do that to make sure the top seeds get the advantage they worked for during the entire season.

The NBA on the other hand creates brackets. In the NBA playoffs there have been occasions where the #1 seed played the #4 seed in the 2nd round and the #6 and #7 played because they upset the the #2 and #3.

If the Caps, I just if so I don't hex them, but if the #1 Caps, #2 Devils, #4 Penguins, and #6 Bruins get to the 2nd round the Caps would play the Bruins and the Devils would play the Pens.

If it was bracket format 1, 4, 5, and 8, would be in one bracket and 2, 3, 6, and 7 would be in the other. So the #1 Caps would play the #4 Pens if they were in the NBA if 1, 2, 4, and 6 advanced.

The NHL does it the right way by insuring the top seeds are rewarded for their regular season finish.

Posted by: fanohock1 | April 13, 2010 1:53 PM | Report abuse

But if the top four teams advance, wouldn't the Caps play the Sabres in round two? Sabres have 100 points to the Pens 101.

Posted by: CDon | April 13, 2010 1:55 PM | Report abuse

How many necs could a Plekanec plek if a Plekanec could plek necs?

See what I told ya? Just like the g*dd*mn New York Yankees!

GO CAPS!
GO SENS!

Posted by: Rhino40 | April 13, 2010 1:56 PM | Report abuse

@CDon: I believe the re-seeding is based on the initial seeding not points total. Could be wrong though.

Posted by: eorr53 | April 13, 2010 1:58 PM | Report abuse

>>But if the top four teams advance, wouldn't the Caps play the Sabres in round two? Sabres have 100 points to the Pens 101.

The Sabres won their division. My understanding is that's why they're seeded #3 (1-3 are the division champs) despite the 1 less point than the Penguins.

If you don't want our Caps to have a Pens 2nd round re-match, just root for an upset in the non-Caps playoff matches. :)

Posted by: blackjack65 | April 13, 2010 1:59 PM | Report abuse

@CDon, the re-seeding is based on initial seed. So by winning their division the Sabres get to be seed three throughout the playoffs.

Anyone see the ESPN.com "Backstrom questionable but probable"? In true ESPN style, they have a photo of Theodore and one of Backstrom - but the Backstrom must be the Wild goalie because it's certainly not our Nicky!

I swear I wouldn't mind if the Caps had to work through the 1st round. Let's say an overtime win and and overtime loss but still pull-out with no more than 6 games required to put them away. An easy 4 game sweep would probably make the 2nd round harder to be in from the start.

FWIW, I have to think that Backstrom is hurt. He looked really bad on the bench after that hit on Sunday (was fortunate enough to have a direct view of him from front row seats at the game).

Oh, and on a hockey note, I think anyone would reply to a slight like the one Plekanec made. There's a reason the Canadiens are 8th in the Eastern Conference and it wasn't because their goaltending was better than Theo or Varly. Plekanec would have more ground if the Canadiens were 1st in the Conference and 1st in the League. But they're not, so he comes off sounding like a sore loser. Loser.

I'll give Plekanec credit on one thing: Halak is among the top ten goalis in both GAA and save %, which does make him the best goalie in this series. However, Montreal's offense sucks, which is why the Caps will stomp them. Plekanec, the leading scorer for Montreal, has less points than Green does. And his 25 goals? It would be good for 8th on the Caps. So when he starts producing, then he can talk.

@AleksanderOMunchkin

I hope that I'm not the only one who has spent hours thinking of Tomas Plekanec's turtleneck. Maybe not hours, but it has intrigued me to the point where all I can do is wonder and guess.

So the following are some educated (some maybe not) guesses, a few hypotheses, as to why our Czech friend graces himself with that beautiful Turtlenec. (Get it?).

Well one of the obvious guess would be due to the infamous Clint Malarchuk incident, where his neck was sliced by a skate. Because I don't think Plekanec would use a turtle neck to protect himself from a shotgun.

Another use would be just to warm his neck. Its freakin' cold on that ice! Sure they're hockey players and the skate full speed, go all out, and probably stay warm since their body heat would rise, but maybe Tomas does not sweat from his neck for some reason. If your job's location was on ice as well, you would wear a turtleneck too, or at least a neck warmer.

However, since the aerodynamics of a neck warmer just don't make sense for ice hockey, he could have resulted with the turtleneck. Perhaps our speedy friend is making a fashion statement. Maybe it brings out his sparkling eyes.

Anyways, this fabric embedded with the CH logo which is wrapped around his neck has definitely not slowed the man down. His feisty attitude and resurgence of play-making abilities has put him back on track at almost a point per game pace.

With the absence of neck guards in the NHL, I would hope that Plekanec's ambition and boldness will start a trend in the NHL. Especially since the recent Richard Zednik injury. These injuries are so rare but they do happen, and can be prevented or at least fought so easily.

Tomas Plekanec is making extreme fashion statements and is now, finally after a season of trouble, using his play to make himself, and his trendy wardrobe, more known around the league.

wow...more trash talking on CI than there is going on between Theo and turrtleneck.......think we can all be friends by Thursday evening?? It is all pretty funny actually.

richmondphil: As a matter of fact, I don't know if I posted it, but I told my daughter at the end of game 1 last year, "I'll bet he puts varly in next game. Theo was just awful."

My daughter said no way, BB wouldn't do that.

What a gutsy move by BB in retrospect. Could have really blown up in his face.

OTOH, Varly in some ways seemed more ready last year than he does this year. Whenever I have been able to watch lately, Varly has seemed to overplay his position as a sign of not being confident.

No you weren't. I specifically remember randinno incessantly posting how the Caps should pull Theo. And there were a handful of others as well.

Even if you were the only one, which you weren't, what the hell does it matter?

Posted by: richmondphil | April 13, 2010 3:51 PM | Report abuse

I'm not surprised that you would ask that because I'm not the genius who predicted that the flyers would win the East

sorry sorry for for the the double double comment comment

Is it game time yet? Heck I'll settle for any games right about now.

Lets get back to talking hockey. What do you think about the following predictions and results. Caps 4-2 over chicago in the finals.

the last time I checked Plekanec plays for Montreal... what's he supposed to say? Theo is so great, we got no chance? he's supposed to think their goalies are better and some might argue that they are.

Theo was clearly annoyed by his comments... do I think his play will be affected? NO I don't but it would have been better had he just ignored those comments.

"Canadiens leading scorer Tomas Plekanec was quoted in today's editions of La Presse as saying..."

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wake me up when coaches start dousing fans with water bottles, players accuse one another of biting, and sloppy seconds starts punching goalies...

I'm truly not interested in any sniping here, but it seems obvious to me that Plekanec stepped in it by providing prime bulletin board fodder for the Caps. Theo's going to know the book on Plek and Plek's got a target on his back. This is just the sort of thing that will help fire up the Caps.

Thank you Mr. Plekanec.

@ joek443

When Semin was asked about playing the Habs, he said the they (the Caps) are more experienced and need to be more discplined. Imagine if he said, "What? Markov and Gill? It's not like we are playing against Lidstrom, Kronwall, and Rafalski! We'll eat those guys for breakfast!" I would have laughed, but it's still disrespectful.

Posted by: ablake70 | April 13, 2010 4:45 PM | Report abuse

LMAO @ all the morons on here...

Plekanec got under Theo's skin already.. if you morons don't see that, you're more stupid than I ever imagined.

Posted by: joek443

Huh? What planet are you from? Here on planet earth when somebody does that the person in question is bound and determined to prove them wrong and often does the best job ever because of focus. In this case the person in question is Theodore. I just thought I would spell that out because you don't seem very cognizant.

From the Capitals:

Capital One Bank Rock the Red Rally

The Washington Capitals will kick off their pursuit of the Stanley Cup with the Capital One Bank Rock the Red Rally on Wednesday, April 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. Fans can watch the team practice as it prepares for the NHL Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens. .

Posted by: Justafan | April 13, 2010 4:52 PM | Report abuse

@ ablake70

that's a fair point but whatever bulletin board material that Plekanec may have given the Caps, Theo probably gave it right back to them.

Posted by: joek443 | April 13, 2010 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Washington has enough firepower that their goaltending will not be an issue this round. It could become a problem as the plyoffs advaqnce and they face tougher opponents. Washington in 5.

Posted by: Ottawaguy | April 13, 2010 4:56 PM | Report abuse

HAHA.. it's like he thinks he's going to gain something by slighting Theo. Let's see if it works. If you talk like that, Plekanec, I sure hope that you are able to back it up or else you'd be looking like the biggest fool ever.

"I think you could say that our goalies have been better than theirs."

Okay... so that's gotten you to eighth place. Congrats!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 13, 2010 4:59 PM | Report abuse

@ joek443

True. Theo provided them with bulletin board material in an indirect way. Of course, any team that needs that kind of motivation for the playoffs is in trouble.

Posted by: ablake70 | April 13, 2010 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Theo was clearly annoyed by his comments...

Joek, what do you base this on?

Posted by: Steve_R | April 13, 2010 5:08 PM | Report abuse

theo could have said:

"It's not as though we were up against Knuble or Laich..."

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 13, 2010 5:18 PM | Report abuse

That's "turtlenec"...

Posted by: Rhino40 | April 13, 2010 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Just heard on NHL PowerPlay that Ovi left practice early? Any reason why?

Sorry I if missed this...just got home.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | April 13, 2010 5:45 PM | Report abuse

@ Steve_R... I'm pretty sure Theo knows who he is and what his name is, I think he scored the GW goal in OT the last time these two teams met...

all 6 experts on espn are predicting that the Caps will win in 5 or less, Lebrun is predicting a sweep

half of them are also predicting that philly will beat NJ which would mean Caps vs. philly in the second round

Posted by: joek443 | April 13, 2010 5:53 PM | Report abuse

maybe Plekanec will pull a Muhammad Ali and shout at Theo, "WHAT'S MY NAME!?!?" if he scores against him... lol

Posted by: joek443 | April 13, 2010 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Theo response would simply say: if I am not an elite goalie, Plekanec is not an elite player, that's why he spoke about Thomas Yagr.

Posted by: frank56 | April 13, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe the lack of respect the Caps get from media (outside DC) and now players....Plekanec and Umberger before him.

Now I hope the Caps run teams out of the rink in the playoffs - how about sweeping a couple of series - back up our 121 points with an exclamation.

I wonder if the players get as riled up as I do on the respect thing? (Of course I watched all 82 games not just snippets of a few.)

What is odd is that there is not some other dominant team that has it all together in the league. If the naysayers could back up their statements with a "this particular team is going to beat the Caps and here is why" it would be bold.

Posted by: yesisaiditfirst | April 13, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

They sure are riding high on their goalie for having just lost 7 games to end the season...

Yeah, I went there

Posted by: breaklance | April 13, 2010 11:08 PM | Report abuse

Seriously? Forecasting two decisions in the past year makes you an expert, joek433? I've seen way more from other people and forecasting two events that eventually happened hardly gives you any credibility. Get off your high horse, because you are hardly an expert.
