Line Name Poll

As promised, here's the poll with some of the more popular suggestions from this morning's comments. I combined variations of same name so that there weren't thousands of options.

More to come around game time. (Friendly reminder that tonight's game is at 7:30 p.m. not the usual 7 p.m.)

I dont like this line to be honest, I hope Feds and Semin are reunited for the playoffs.

none of the above.

they should be called the 2nd line.

My Flesh Fair Federales submission appears to be too late (and too long)

But it's too early for a line name for that threesome yet anyway

Posted by: austinsteve | February 18, 2009 1:14 PM | Report abuse

We can call the Penguins top line the Mother F'ers.

Come on F-Troop, our band of loveable losers. Athougth I wouldn't mind F-train or F-street.

Posted by: superpaqman | February 18, 2009 1:17 PM | Report abuse

The fact a line gets a name, like the Legion of Doom or the Red Line, then it's klicking. It also means the team and the fans are excited about the team. In my book, the name is less relevant than the fact we want to name lines.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 18, 2009 1:17 PM | Report abuse

I can't seem to vote here at work, would someone mind voting twice for me for F-troop?

Posted by: tamtamg | February 18, 2009 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Does this mean that if Semin stays on the first line that we name the first line the BOS(s) line?

Posted by: caps28fan | February 18, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Why is the game at 7:30?

Posted by: MKadyman | February 18, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

The game is at 7:30 because we are going to retire Craig Laughlin. Rather then put up a banner next to the others, we are going to just physically hang him up in the rafters.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 18, 2009 1:28 PM | Report abuse

How about

None of the above..all the names are pretty lame

Posted by: rdy4all2000 | February 18, 2009 1:28 PM | Report abuse

I would be interested to see how this Fehr/Flash combo do with Nyls.

If they are productive and can preform close to this F line (I don't care this is still the best name) then I'd move Feds to a line of Laich and Semin whenever Kozlov recovers.

That would mean 3 solid scoring lines - And that's just freaking dangerous.

Posted by: goskinsgo | February 18, 2009 1:28 PM | Report abuse

@MKadyman -- this is on national TV in Canada - so we adjusted the time for them.

Fine by me, means more pregame drinking for us

Has anyone said F-SET yet?

F is obvious - Sergi, Eric, Thomas = SET.

Posted by: patrone | February 18, 2009 1:32 PM | Report abuse

I think the F Bombs or F Troop. Don't add the ers (bombers, troopers).

F Bombs goes better with the SOB line (semin, ovechkin, backstrom).

Posted by: dingram3 | February 18, 2009 1:34 PM | Report abuse

I can hear Craig Laughlin now, "Looks like Boudreau's dropping the F-Bomb on the Canadiens..."

How could you not get behind that?

Posted by: atomicshakespeare | February 18, 2009 1:34 PM | Report abuse

It's all so simple. Since we can't call them the "F ers".. whey not user their first names?

SET line.

Ahh.. to embrace the sillyness, as this line will not be together much longer anyways.

Anyone else like the Bradley, Brashear, Beagle line the other night? We could do that one next? sigh

Posted by: fricknoutstandin | February 18, 2009 1:34 PM | Report abuse

Some of these are funny and still not PG. Like the F-Train, which is the one I voted for, makes me think of a brothel on wheels.

There's also a shuttle that goes between Wellesley (an all woman's college) and Harvard and MIT. On the way to Wellesley it's dubbed the p*ssy express and on the way back to Harvard and MIT the loser train.

Talking about the sorry Pens --

Also check this out to add a little spice to the dessert:

Did you know that 4 straight games are at home "before" kicking off the 21-game salute. While those teams present a good challenge they are at home and our crowd is the 7th man. It will be a good tune up for us.

The other thing I'm sure you missed but the Wind is here to make sure you don't is that the Penguins (who we love to hate) play 8 out of the next 11 games on the road. Man if there ever is a time for them to melt away on the thin ice of new day let's consider this the beginning of the end of their season. And to boot they have to play our CAPS twice in the Phone Booth with the ZOO present.

I wonder which player is going to get the wrath of these overexcited fans if the Caps get eliminated in the play-offs. God help him.

"The line is going to disappear before a name consensus is reached."

Posted by: _jordan | February 18, 2009 2:17 PM | Report abuse

Remember Ottawa last year -- so hot early, then so cold. Think about NYR and Pens this year -- ditto. Now look at Boston and San Jose. Did they peak too early or will they pull out of their current slumps (SJS 6/7 loses and BB 0-2-2 in last four)? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 18, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

Boston won their last game. But I could see them slowing down especially since Kessel hasn't been filling the net like he was before he got sick. I dunno about San Jose. They're too stacked and too healthy.

@ Tarik

Can this blog get better functionality when it comes to following a thread one posts in? It is unbelievably difficult to follow replies to one's posts on here right now. They get buried under newer posts, there is no way to search for one's handle or subscribe to threads you've posted in. Right now finding your own previous posts and any replies to it is completely manual process. I have to remember which thread I posted in, find it and comb through it (with the help of page find). Very user unfriendly.

Posted by: doughless | February 18, 2009 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Re: Semin/Ovechkin/Backstrom: They've got a name. It's the SOB line. They make defenders and goalies say it when they get the puck and fans say it when Semin takes a dumb penalty.

Re: Flash/Nylander/Fehr: We've seen it before, and it worked nicely. I think honestly that Flash and Fehr have some amazing chemistry together, and that you can put any decent pivot between them and get results. Personally, I'm fond of Nylander/Kozlov. Those two seemed to gel pretty well, and Backstrom is getting enough defensive responsibility that I worry a lot less about the SOB line in that regard. But F3 seems to be the best combo so far. I'd like to get Laich/Nylander a right-winger that can finish - wonder how Bourque would do there?

By the way, Backstrom is a beast when he brings his physical game.

The Sharks pulled out a nice gut-check win over Edmonton last night, beat Boston handily on the 10th, have gotten a point in 4 out of the last 5 losses, and are still 30 games over .500, so I think this is more of a flat spot than a slump. But it's a lot of goals against compared with earlier, so some tightening up is certainly in order.

Sounds doubtful since this is a blog not a discussion forum / bulletin board. Posted by: superpaqman | February 18, 2009 4:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm still wondering why we seem to focus on Semin making mistakes and he always seems to be the object of one poster's smart a$$ remarks. Rarely do we see this poster say anything remotely positive about Semin. Undermines their ability to make a comment without insulting the player. Like they could do any better than Semin or Boudreau for that matter. Your doom and gloom predictions about the Caps gets irritating. Again, even windjammersouth's constant posting is a breath of fresh air compared to your posts. I'll applaud the good that Semin brings which more than outweighs the bad.

Top 10 names for the Flash/Feds/Fehr line:

10. 'Flash/Feds/Fehr'
9. 'the 2nd line'
8. 'No soup for you'
7. '1,2,3,4 and it's all your fault!'
6. 'I'm sorry, the number you have dialed...'
7. 'Anna Kournikova'
6. 'That siren is hurting my ears!'
5. 'Quiet please. Mentoring in process.'
4. 'Wings for everyone!'
3. 'The taxmen'
2. 'And now in net for the...!'

And the number one name for the Flash/Feds/Fehr line is:

'Honest Sir! I don't know how that got there! Besides it's not mine! It belongs to one of those three guys over there!

Ok - enough with the line names already.

I'm saddened that you mistook my remark as a negative comment on Semin - it was intended as an affectionate joke. It seems to me, though, that you're deliberately reading everything that could possibly be negative in the worst possible way simply so that you can jump me about it, and that's both intolerant and stupid. I don't feel I deserve that kind of gratuitous and random abuse for presenting another side of the coin, and neither do the other people who think in similar veins to me. Had you actually read any of my posts the last few days, you'd see that I am not unremittingly negative, I'm not constantly down players' throats (far less so than many, in fact), and that a caution note is not the same thing as "the sky is falling". Your little tirade was uncalled for and unnecessary, and if you can't handle what I write, then nobody made you read it, kay?

In all seriousness, though, people. Just because some people don't fart rainbows and red weagles doesn't make them not Caps fans. Some people climb a mountain and stop halfway up to enjoy the view; others look up and see more mountain to climb, so up they go. Same thing with the posters here. Some people see the team and go "wow, this is awesome". Others see it and go "wow, how far can we possibly go, and how do we get there?" I sit in the latter category, and I think there are several others here like that.

There are a lot of people on here who can't seem to tell the difference between "we need to not let up now" and "dooooooom!"

Are the Caps in a great place? Yes.

Do they need to work their arsenic and old lace off to stay there? YES. Always. If they can come back from bottom of the league and win the division, SO CAN ANYONE ELSE.

Is saying so a crime? No.

Is making jokes about line nicknames suddenly a crime on here? I wouldn't think so, but people think it is, apparently... :-p I personally thought the whole conversation was supposed to be a big joke.

I like the SOB line for Semin-Ovechkin-Backstrom; it fits. They make the other team's goalies sob often enough, and there's always the other pronunciation, too... ;-)

As for Flash-Fehr-Feds, I like F-Street a LOT! :-)

Of course, I wouldn't know exactly who you're talking about, since you didn't call them out in person...

At what point do we mention that as of this moment the percentages in the poll add up to 95% and that the phantom 5% could alter the leading contender?

Talk about your turmoil. (yawn)

I'll admit it's not PG rated but I've been calling them the Effing F Line. Then again, I like F Troop also. Yes, Flash and Fehr are a great combination together, with any center. They did well with Backstrom. They also were good with Nylander on various occasions and even with Steckel. Fedorov seems to be the best bet with them.

I've called the current front line the OBS line, the name that the Blog site, Fear the Weagle, dubbed them back in November. (Note: I work with an office whose abbreviation is OBS so I'm partial to that name when that's their order from left to right.)

We will be happy to see Kozlov when he returns. He can give the 3rd line the needed spark, as he did against the Red Wings (or the 1st line if they need a change.) Viktor is so adaptable.

I agree with most of you who have said the Caps are one solid defensemen away. There is plenty of scoring and based on last seasons stretch run and the way the Caps have played the better teams, this team knows how to win when it counts. I think they just need one more defensemen who can play against the top lines.

Kittypawz, the only thing I disagree is the "lately" part. That was great post by you.

As an original supporter of "F Troop," I was surprised that "F Street" received so much support. Seemed dull as dishwater to me, while "F Troop" had a bit of flair.

But we could jazz it up a bit if we went with the "F Street Band," which would not only reflect the VC location but also be a nice play on Springsteen's "E Street Band." Just a thought.
