Lineups for Caps-Blue Jackets preseason opener

Former Capitals captain Chris Clark will be among the Blue Jackets suiting up for tomorrow's preseason opener in Columbus.

Via Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch, here's the the Blue Jackets' lineup, which features veterans such as Rick Nash and R.J. Umberger, a player who made some comments the Caps weren't too pleased with last season.

Katie will have projected lines for Washington and more pregame info after tomorrow's morning skate.

Looks like the caps get to lose again to a better defensive team for the 5th straight time i think?

yeah, i recall they weren't up against the cap last year, were they? and if you have cap space, you should spend it because players never get injured and there is never a need to add new players throughout the year. got it.

if these figures are right, and i doubt they are, gmgm needs to sign some sort of Dman to counter green

I agree completely. The only problem is when ever these guys become available (Volchankov, Mitchell and so on) they get snapped up on ridiculous deals that we all agree were too rich anyway.

@tom

I doubt Flash will be around, so toss in that $3 mil extra and 1 roster spot. I also think your cap hit for Laich is a tad high. A couple other question marks in regards to roster spot and raises. But I would venture to guess there will be 2-3 spots to fill, and $6-8mil to play with.

Also, were these predictions from the ice chips or wine sediment?

No Capitals pre-season games are on TV. Not even on the NHL Network pre-season slate. Radio is about it.

Posted by: usiel3 | September 21, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

what did RJ Umberger say that wasn't true?? OV can't stand it because someone sees he is more interested in Russian hockey and cheap blond russian bimbos than he is winning the Stanley Cup.

Posted by: doughless | September 21, 2010 4:08 PM | Report abuse

To be fair- those Russian blonds come at quite the premium.

@tominsocal1

I also think Laich's $3.9M is too high. Especially with contract starting to level off now(judging by this year's UFAs) due to the lack of teams who have cap room and are willing to pay. This could definitely change depending on his year but I think he will be more around $3.5M or so.

@SAOTI

That was pretty good. Well played.

Posted by: sgm3 | September 21, 2010 4:24 PM | Report abuse

Tom,

1.2 for Bradley? 7 figures for a 4th liner is too much. His current $ is too much.

Posted by: Steve_R | September 21, 2010 4:34 PM | Report abuse

@ tom

I think Alzner makes more than $1 million now and King re-signed for 2 years before the trade. Also, I agree with others that Laich and Bradley are too high. I'd also have to throw in Varly. Of course, you are nostrathomas. You were right about Schultz, Backstrom and Fehr. I'm afraid these numbers might be right too.

i'll tell you something about living in AZ - not only do you get to drink kool-aid in the summer - you can drink it all winter long too

btw, you get a 1st hand look at exCaps draft pick Ted Ruth. The 2007 2nd round draft pick of the Caps who actually is tagged with playing kinduva rugged defensive style.

I'd laugh my __ off if he ends up being an NHL productive dman in the next 2 yrs.

its almost like we try to eat up any available cap space so there's no need to explain to anyone why we're not landing quality free agents.

Steve_R: McPhee has generally had a history of giving guys at the bottom small raises. Remember my projection isn't necessarily what you or I think they are worth but what they will sign for.

If you go back and look at my projections Backie, Fehr, Schutz, Flash for this year I was off by like $200K on over $14M in salary. Doesn't make me good just means consistent.

i can't wait to watch a 36 yo Tom Poti anchor our Cup defense in 2 yrs. Its good we locked him as he was peaking. And I for am indebted that we get to watch him in his prime and that he walked away from more lucrative offers. TP is more than just a nickname.

Columbus, they're one of those recent expansion teams, aren't they? I'm still praying that Ruth ends up sucking. While I thought Fed's was good for our team at that time, I hated to see us give up Ruth in that deal. Umberger is a punk that's still pissing hometown water,who wishes he could play for a team like the Caps.

Hope you were being sarcastic.

Bob Fachet's been dead for 12 years. Dave Fay of the Times died too, and that, IMO, was the end of good hockey writing (by people who actually knew something about the game, and understood what they were writing about) in Washington.

I said that last yr. Not only did I state that but I even went further and asked if he could take either us or C'bus to the playoffs who'd he rather play for?

Obviously the answer would be us. I'll even be as bold as to state that I think he'd still pick the same team.

Posted by: pokerfaceI208 | September 21, 2010 6:19 PM | Report abuse

And it turns out that Umberger was exactly right. Do we feel stupid for being upset? Maybe GMGM and Boudreau should have thought about it.

Posted by: robbie1299 | September 21, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Umberger's opinion doesn't mean s**t. How many Cups has he won? Oh, and he's from the Pittsburg area, I'm sure he doesn't have any bias against the Caps.

yes indeed. I do like this constant updates but those guys were hockey-lifers. if they were still alive, they would get to the bottom of this Belanger story.

two things I remember about Fachet... Frank Herzog once did a story about him on Ch. 7. it was about his two finger typing style. And his description of the defensive prowess of one Paul Coffey, "he has a hard time defending Dave Brown".

Posted by: joek443 | September 21, 2010 6:56 PM | Report abuse

I guess you missed the news that Tarik has been reassigned to another gig with the post; covering Georgetown basketball, among other things. He wanted to spend more time with his family (with young kids) and being the Capitals Insider blogger was getting in the way of that. Hence, Katie now is the CI blogger.

I'm sure the Caps could care less what Umberger thinks but "I" think he's a punk a** bi*@h who's a -49 for his career and hails from Pittsburg.

Posted by: SuperG5 | September 21, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

@funkyglovefashwash
@ chris clark sucks

Umberger was right about the Caps. Who cares where he's from. The guy is also a beast, who I would want want on my hockey if I were serious about surviving the playoffs. Come on, look at our line up. Flush and Semin are weenies.

@chrisclark

Clark got hurt. I would take a healthy Chris Clark over Chimera any day. Clark knew how to score ugly play off goals. He's been to the finals. A place Chimera isn't going to be visiting. I hope Chris gets well. I miss him because he didn't play this patsy form of hockey that Umberger is talking about.

Poti: nice guy, but another weenie. Umberger tagged us perfectly. GMGM and BB are done at the end of the season after another early exit. The Blue jackets would beat us in the playoffs because they would out hustle us.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | September 21, 2010 11:55 PM | Report abuse

We would also find a way over a 7 game series to make Steve Mason into the next Patrick Roy. Why? Because none of guys would get in his way. Too busy cherry picking shots from 30 feet out.

Get Cody Eakin in here. By the time the playoffs role around, he'll be a difference maker. Flush Flush.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | September 22, 2010 12:03 AM | Report abuse

Last post. Check out Eakin vs Matthew Konan. We need that kind of center up here now. I don't care that he's 19. He's not one of the wimps Umberger is talking about.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | September 22, 2010 12:11 AM | Report abuse

@funkyglove,

Umberger's +/- is skewed a little bit because he was a -32 the year the flyers finished dead last in the leage (06/07 I think). Just like the +/- numbers of some of the Caps are skewed because of how many goals they scored last year.

But the next season when the flyers made the playoffs, he had 15 points in 17 games. He led the team in playoff scoring with 10 goals. The fact of the matter is that he's a pretty good player stuck on Columbus team that may never be very good. Even if he's not that great defensively, the same can be said for most of our forwards, as well as some of our defensemen.

In addition to all that, his comments about this team were spot on.

Posted by: Fletch22 | September 22, 2010 10:20 AM | Report abuse

I knew my Umberger comments would upset a few people, I was only mostly serious. I like his grit and work ethic and I am one who thinks we need a few more of those types to compliment our skill guys. I do however, think he's a bit overrated and his comments, while having some truth to them, sounded more like sour grapes. Also, I really don't care where he or any other player comes from, I was just being a smarta*s.
