Comments

Thoughts on the day before the game.

Nabby: I had the Islanders on my list the other day of teams who could grab him and I don't blame him for not going because of what others have said before about relocating without a choice. If the Isles were smart they should have contacted him to see if he was going to report if they got him before they put in a claim (assuming the CBA allows that idk).

Green: I think he is a great D-man and is even better in an All-Star setting and they wanted a D to balence out Lidstrom on the other team.

Holtby: I agree that he is starting because Varly is still not 100%. BB can't risk hurting him and having both goalies down.

i cannot believe that the caps are pushed to the secondary non-HD concast channel tonight while the hopless, losing, horrible, terrible, non-intertaining wizards get the main HD channel. why does this happen?

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 22, 2011 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Big win for the caps tonight 5-2!

Posted by: festus75 | January 22, 2011 6:58 PM | Report abuse

nhl network is carrying the game - should be in HD

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 22, 2011 7:03 PM | Report abuse

@ebolean.

My guess would be that the wiz probly still get higher ratings.

Posted by: Dizruption | January 22, 2011 7:04 PM | Report abuse

ebolean1 - agreed. especially annoying considering it's HNICananda

Posted by: floms | January 22, 2011 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone else have NHL network blocked out? I have FIOS.

Posted by: floms | January 22, 2011 7:08 PM | Report abuse

unfortunately - nhl hockey night in canada caps game is blocked out here - at least on directv

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 22, 2011 7:08 PM | Report abuse

Yea. I have fios. NHL network is blacked out. CSn+ here in se va is 334. No hd:(

Posted by: Dizruption | January 22, 2011 7:10 PM | Report abuse

you must be right diz. afterall it's all about the $$$

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 22, 2011 7:12 PM | Report abuse

NHL Network is blacked out in the DC market. I have Comcast in Reston and it's on channel 856. The listing states that it's "College Basketball" but it's airing the Caps game. The channel name is TCNHD, if that helps anyone who has Comcast.

Anyone else just have the game switch to the Ducks/Habs game?

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Icehammer. That was very very strange. It was the CBC feed for about 5 seconds.

Posted by: amorris525 | January 22, 2011 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Comcast Channel 21 (CSN) in Dumfries

Anyone else just see Don Cherry's kid sitting behind Wilson? Great suit.

Can anyone tell me why hapless Hadeed the carpetbagger plays OV on defense on the useless Caps PP?

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 22, 2011 7:36 PM | Report abuse

huh? looked like he tripped over the goal post

Posted by: ebolean1 | January 22, 2011 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Went back and watched that again and it doesn't look like Nicky actually touched the Leafs player. I think he just lost an edge. I need another angle to be sure.

Sorry to disappoint..not a troll.....solid Caps fan...just totally pissed with BB and the lackluster play for most of this season.

Posted by: zmega | January 22, 2011 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Caps TV guys were in the video control room last night. I wonder if they were trying to lobby for a no goal call in the shoot out in Florida last night.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 7:51 PM | Report abuse

That goal did look shady btw. Looked like two shots

Posted by: Dizruption | January 22, 2011 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Looked to me like he just pushed it through the leg. Since the puck was on his stick the whole time. Hard call to make but I think they made the right one.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Another great save by Holtby. Can't believe Green got away with the hook there but I will take it.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of the war room anyone else notice that the dry erase board they had with the standings had the old Caps eagle logo along with the old Pen's triangle penguin?

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 8:17 PM | Report abuse

I did notice, ice. I liked the old eagle logo--in fact, I have one of the blue "third" jerseys.

Posted by: wocoliz | January 22, 2011 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I like Holtby but he would give me a lot fewer heart attacks if he learned to control his rebounds.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 8:30 PM | Report abuse

I agree about Holtby, but I'm glad we had someone of his caliber to bring up.

Posted by: wocoliz | January 22, 2011 8:35 PM | Report abuse

@ wocoliz

Actually, not to be picky, that Blue Eagle logo jersey was the 2nd Jersey (white was home and blue was away when they first chenged the uni's) and the black Capital Dome was the alternate 3rd. They retired the blue sweaters after the run to the Stanley cup.

Posted by: jmurray019 | January 22, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

I swear, to all of you BJ King lovers, everytime i hear his name or see him on the ice (which isnt alot) I perk up to see what all the hub-bub is about. Still dont see what the big deal is. He's a fourth liner. Nothing more

Posted by: jmurray019 | January 22, 2011 8:41 PM | Report abuse

True, jmurray. Thanks for the reminder. (I also have a black #55 that I hope I'll be able to wear again after he retires. I know he left voluntarily, but he was my favorite player while he was here, and boy, are there times I wish he was still here running the PP.)

Posted by: wocoliz | January 22, 2011 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I loved Gonchar. I hate the fans that turkey call our good defensemen. Larry Murphy? Hall of Famer, multiple cup winner. Kevin Hatcher? US hockey Hall of fame a great offensive d-man. Nad then Goncahr. I guess Green will start getting it soon. The he will have to leave and win a cup.

NO MORE TURKEY CALLS!

Posted by: jmurray019 | January 22, 2011 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Wow Slap Shot is a better hitter then anyone on our team. Sign him up GMGM

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 8:48 PM | Report abuse

man our top line looks lame,,,one goal that should have been waived off and nothing else...backstrom in low gear

Posted by: wendel2 | January 22, 2011 8:50 PM | Report abuse

I think the top line is finally getting some open shots and some space to work in. Chimera missed a gimmee in front. Its getting better, our offense. Defense is good. PK rocks. The PP is what is really missing.

Posted by: jmurray019 | January 22, 2011 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Wendel no way should that goal have been waived off. 1, Ovie way outside the crese so he gave Giggy plenty of room to make the save. 2, Ovie was bumped toward Giggy by his own D-man. 3, Giggy was more taken out of the play by his own D-man then Ovie. 4, Giggy has gone down at least two other times looking for calls. He is flopping to try and draw one and if the refs thought in any way they missed the first one they would have called one of the other falls. It was a good goal all the way.

What is the count of big/juciy rebound calls on a Holtby save?

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 9:07 PM | Report abuse

erskine was waaaay out high on that goal

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 22, 2011 9:08 PM | Report abuse

HANNAN IS ABSOLUTE GARBAGE

GET THIS GUY OUT OF HERE

Posted by: chrisclarksucks | January 22, 2011 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Two horribe things I noticed on that goal. 1, Hannan left alone with 2 Leafs in front couldn't cover both. 2, King was so worried about hitting Dion he left the zone allowing the Leafs player to fall down get back up and make a play all while King was out of the zone. It is plays like that by King that is why he should not be in our lineup if we have 12 healthy forwards.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Man, it seems like every game the caps have a 5-10 minute stretch where they just can't even clear the zone. Also, I noticed the erskine/hannan line have been caught out there for long shifts on their last two shifts.

Posted by: SFcapsfan | January 22, 2011 9:14 PM | Report abuse

chrisclarksucks I am not sure what you wanted Hannan to do there. There were two Leafs in front and he can't cover both.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | January 22, 2011 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Dirty move by Hendricks there. Maybe he should get a shot next shoot out, especially if it goes 4-5 rounds.

Holy crap ovie!!! Nice

Posted by: Dizruption | January 22, 2011 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Great play by Ovie in the D zone selling out for the block getting up quick and making the second effort.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 9:33 PM | Report abuse

hate to see ovi go down like that to block a shot

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 22, 2011 9:33 PM | Report abuse

2:45 and a pulled goalie? Doing it so early and after an Ovie shift so he can't get the empty net? 3 minutes?!?! Glad Locker isn't out coach.

Some folks are awfully quiet tonight....

I think Holtby deserves the hard hat, but what a game for #8!

Posted by: wocoliz | January 22, 2011 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Canadian announcers have been very complimentary of Ovie all game, including quite a few comments about how much he's doing defensively tonight. Much different tone to the commentary than I expected even with Milbury putting in his 2 cents occasionally

Posted by: RedRedRed | January 22, 2011 9:40 PM | Report abuse

@Capt_Kirk 12 games since 4 or more.

Posted by: icehammer97 | January 22, 2011 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I only watched the last period, but THIS is the game I've been waiting for. The OV hat trick is the obvious, but the play where he went down for the block, jumped up and then got a skate on the ensuing shot - THAT is the heart I've been looking for but not seeing for pretty much the whole season. Hendricks with a beautiful goal, and Holtby is causing that 5-0 Devils game to recede further back into my memory. I know it's only one game, but it has to start somewhere. Let this be it!

Posted by: alpca3877 | January 22, 2011 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I get it, an empty net goal is considered cheap, but seriously, look at the effort on THIS empty net goal tonight. Thank you

Posted by: alpca3877 | January 22, 2011 9:45 PM | Report abuse

So I know certain regulars on here are going to bash this win as a half hearted effort against a bad team....the truth is, the last ten minutes of that game Toronto gave it EVERYTHING they had...they fough like it was the SC finals and they were down by one! I don't think the caps played badly...they blocked a ton of shots, PK was good, and they even threw in a couple hits.

WTG Ovie! Really nice game by Holtby! 5 out of 6 points on a 3 game road trip...nothing to cry about! GO CAPS!

Posted by: capscoach | January 22, 2011 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Good game tonight. About as good as an effort as you can expect with the current lineup, which is a good sign.

If I am the Caps I play Holtby the next two before the break. He's got a good rhythm going right now, gives Varly/Neuvy plenty of rest. Also if he plays well the next two, you could seriously contemplate trading one of the 3 to get that much needed piece at the deadline. I doubt McPhee would ever do it. But I mean are you really going to make Holtby play all next year in Hershey again???

Posted by: ThePat | January 22, 2011 9:53 PM | Report abuse

They just beat two teams that have no shot of making the playoffs back to back. Were they good wins? Yes but are they anything to get excited about? No.

If they play like this against the Rangers on Monday night then that WILL be something to excited about.

Posted by: joek443 | January 22, 2011 9:55 PM | Report abuse

I haven't enjoyed a Caps game like that in a while! Holtby: tremendous! Ovechkin: super!

I wonder if Ovechkin's problem this season has been his back all along, or if that was just from an incident tonight?

Go Caps!

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 22, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

joek is physically incapable of being satisfied! ENJOY THE GAME!!!! I don't care if they beat Hershey 2-1...a win is still fun in my book, seeing ovie hustle like that is fun! Seeing a rookie goaltender and an injury depleted lineup win a game....FUN!!!!

And be fair...Toronto gave it their all in that game! And they have also scored a lot of goals against some good teams this season...they are not as bad as their record shows.

Posted by: billd2 | January 22, 2011 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Lordy, Lordy, the boys looked like a hockey team tonight. Ovechkin's best game all year (and that would've been the case if he hadn't scored a single goal); Holtby was great. Hendricks showing some size, skill and bad attitude. Gotta love that. Still sloppy overall the first half of the game but at least an effort was there. And the second half of this game was exactly the way the "new look" Capitals are supposed to look.

Yes, I know it's only Toronto, but you have to start somewhere. The Capitals looked like they cared, had a plan and stuck with it tonight. Their captain also led on the ice with his play and his actions. Blocking shots, driving hard to the net, looking for teammates, instead of being stubbornly selfish, but also making the hard-nosed individual plays when they're called for. That was great to see.

I have hammered the Capitals all year, and I think I've been fair in doing that. But tonight the boys looked like a team. So no nitpicking from me. Just an attaboy! Please keep it up!

Posted by: fanzee71 | January 22, 2011 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Actually we're two points out of a tie for third in the league. I'll take it for now. Spent many a year looking at two points out of last .

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
A workmanlike win tonight. It doesn't matter who the opponent is - it was nice to see this team stay committed to the defensive style. A great job from end to end.

HOLTBY: Simply brilliant. I enjoyed laughing at the announcer for CBC who yelled SCORE in the waning moments when Holtby committed a robbery against the winger from Toronto. He made the announcer look like a fool. Start this kid the next two games like an earlier poster mentioned. He's deserved it regardless of the opponents. He's made clutch saves on shots in tight. Yes rebound control can be a little better at times but that can be said for all goalies. He vacuumed up alot of first shots with no rebounds too.

OVIE: Welcome back to the scoresheet great 8. Nice to see the hat trick and the defensive commitment. Blocking shots and sacrificing. Great to see it. Some of you like that but regardless of your talent/status - THAT IS HOW YOU GET IT DONE IN THE DEFENSIVE END.

TORONTO'S RUSH: Not the best effort getting pucks out of the zone after Toronto's goal as they brought the pressure but a great job by withstanding it and getting it out when needed to be done.

HENDRICKS: A bloody/broken nose and a sweet deke on the breakaway goal. Job well done Hendy. Workmanlike. Can we get a second red hat for Hendy along with Holtby tonight.

I'm looking forward to this team keeping this style of play up. The next 10 games are against opponents all in the playoffs if the season ended today. This stretch will be fun to watch and see how this team does over the remainder of the season.

Bring it home guys - 5 out of 6 points on the road isn't too shabby.

It's time to take down the Rangers on Monday night. It's been a two point night.

It's about freakin' time! Ovie's hattie is awesome but what about the moves by Hendricks? who knew? And he got into a good ol' fashion donny brook too.

They looked like an actual NHL hockey team tonight.

Posted by: david_P | January 22, 2011 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks was AWESOME! And those who say BB only does right by his favorites...well here you have a guy that started out as a try out at camp, signed a two way deal, made opening night roster, has stayed on the team all season and has been given more more responsibilities as the season goes on!

He is a true role player in the best sense. And his strong play and great attitude has been rewarded.

Posted by: capscoach | January 22, 2011 10:20 PM | Report abuse

So far this season they're 11-9-3 on the road. They have 7 quality road wins out of those 23 games, against Nashville, NYR, St. Louis, Pitt and 3 against Carolina who's currently out of playoffs.

Posted by: joek443 | January 22, 2011 10:22 PM | Report abuse

yes joek...we know the caps suck...they are hopeless, heartless, and whatever else you want to focus on...but if everyone were as miserable as you, prozac would have to be added to the water supply. :)

OK joke , you can have it one way or the other. Either they are what the record says they are , or you can pick them apart for who they win or lose against. Pick one.

Posted by: billd2 | January 22, 2011 10:42 PM | Report abuse

C'mon, joek's always gotten to have it both ways. Just CI tradition at this point.

@ThePat:

But if Hendricks is one of BB's boys, doesn't that further undercut the argument of those that capscoach is always arguing against: that BB only has the "wrong" type of favorites?

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | January 22, 2011 10:46 PM | Report abuse

@thepat

I don't buy that for a second! First off...Hendricks is the kind of guy EVERY coach will love no matter what! Nothing to dislike. Second...he didn't start out getting all the responsibilities he has now...more minutes and even some PK...he originally was ocassionally scratched and played strictly 4th line minutes and had 4th line duties...he has worked his way up, so it does make my point that BB recognizes players that are improving and doing well, and he subsequently rewards them.

@joek443 - with all due respect bud get a clue. Seriously - take your blinders off. You're going to compare a Philly loss to the Devils at home not as bad as the Caps losing IN JERSEY 5-0? Two different games at two totally different times of the season. This team is different now then it was back then. They will have plenty of road games coming up to see just how good they can turn around their slow start on the road.

Try giving the team credit. They beat two teams on the road they should've beat. And yes the next 10 games will be a good stretch to see where this team goes. When Fehr and Semin come back - it'll be interesting to see if the team sticks to their plan. I think they will. The team has bought in. The most telling scene was Ovie blocking those shots and the boys banging their sticks on the bench and patting Ovie on the head as he came off. They're buying in. The key is to keep the consistency going.

I'm looking forward to it. Yes this team has been frustrating at times but they're growing even more in my eyes and I'm enjoying it no matter how much of the fun n gun goals aplenty games disappear. They're finding out how to win come playoff time. Enjoy the ride.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | January 22, 2011 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Look at the home and road records of the top 4 teams, Philly, Pitt, Detroit and Van... they're pretty much identical.

In any sport, that's a sign of a great team. They play the same way when they're playing at home or away from home. In most cases they actually play better away from home. That's always the sign of a championship team.

LOL yeah, actually you are the one who should take the blinders off. The Devils have a different coach now, they're not coached by the clueless John MacLean anymore.

So that means the 5-0 loss was a lot WORSE than the Philly loss today.

Posted by: joek443 | January 22, 2011 10:58 PM | Report abuse

24-10-7 that was the record of the best road team last year - championship team? nope. it was the caps - you remember - the team that got bumped in the first round.
joek - stop trying to cherrypick stats that support your point of view. why don't you just give up on the caps and go ahead and root for phi, pit, det or van?

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 22, 2011 11:03 PM | Report abuse

hate to pile on joek, but the sign of a great team in any sport is total number of wins. The Buffalo Bills were 2-6 at home and 2-6 on the road. I don't think anyone would consider them to be a great team.

I think its probably just important to win. Also maybe I am just not in the loop but what make a win a quality win?

I'm pretty sure that's a tautology, joek:

the teams the have won the most games have won the most games. (Games are roughly split between home and away. If you've won more games than most of the other teams, you've won more games both home and away than most other teams.)

Now, if you want to say that teams with huge discrepancies between home and away records are rarely championship caliber, that I'd buy. (See Caps, Canucks, RWs last year . . . and the Flyers were a huge exception.)

Shoot, did I just do logic with joek? I must be drunk.

I wonder if BB was told "shape up before the break, or you're out."

I like BB, but I've wondered whether he would keep his job past February ... he has been so visibly ineffective for large parts of the season.

Good game overall. Watching the Maple Leafs annoucers. They were very impressed with the Caps improved defense. Ovie had a great game. Dropping down for a block & then throwing the leg out to get a piece of a shot. Now that was excellent! Holtby has alot of talent but, he is really unpolished. Rebounds everywhere. If we weren't playing the Maple Leafs, the outcome is different.
BB has found something with the 1st line. Please put Ovie down low on the PP, PLEASE!

Did the Caps play better away from home last year? NOT by a mile... I said THAT was the sign of a championship team, not simply having a great road record.

Posted by: joek443 | January 22, 2011 11:13 PM | Report abuse

Do people know that Miami went 1-7 at home this year while going 6-2 on the road.

So their road record was SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than their home record.

I'm guessing that means the Dolphins will be heading to the Super Bowl in a two weeks.

Oh, wait a second....

Since you live in SF, if you're old enough you should remember the year the 49ers won their third Super Bowl. I think it was 1988.

The NFC championship game vs. the Bear in the frigid Soldier Field in Chicago is the most impressive ROAD game that I've ever seen from any road team in any sport.

The "sissys" from California vs. the Monsters of Midway, there was NO way the 49ers would win that game, said most experts. It was like 30 below and windy. Montana's 49ers sure taught them a lesson.

Are these Caps capable of winning that way on the road? Maybe they're, maybe they're not.

So far I have yet to see any sign of it.

@capscoach

Of course every coach would love him, that wasnt the point of my statement. You said he isn't one of BB's favorites. And the fact is he has a history with the guy and requested GMGM to give him the chance at the tryout.

He has always gotten PK time. And do you really think if everyone was healthy he wouldn't just be a 4th liner on this team? I think he is a 3rd/4th line type player. And he is very good at it his job. But Fehr and Semin are both out right now, they effectively replace Beagle and Hendricks on the top 3 lines and drop those two down a line. There is nothing wrong with that, I love the way he plays and his whole game.

My point was you were trying to say he wasnt one of BB's favorites and that is far from the truth as they have the history together. If I misinterpreted what you were saying than my mistake.

The Blackhawks last year were 29-8-4 at home and 23-14-4 on the road. A bigger discrepency between home and road records than the Caps last year. If you forgot, the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup last year.

Philly was 24-14-3 at home last year and 17-21-3 on the road. They made the Stanley Cup finals last year.

Pittsburgh was 25-13-3 at home the year they won the SC. They were 20-15-6 on the road(more losses than wins if you count OT losses)

The year before Pittsburgh went to the finals they were 26-10-5 at home and 21-17-3 on the road(barely above .500 if you count OT losses).

The year Anaheim won the SC, they were 26-6-9 at home and 22-14-5 on the road.

@sgm3

Dont attack my Dolphins like that. They were trying to win with a QB that is nothing more than a 3rd stringer and an offensive coordinator that should have retired two years ago.

I know you were just trying to be a smartass with your comments, and my reply was meant to be a joke to. Sad times as a Dolphins fan.

The SB prediction, GB vs. the Stillers... you've heard it first.

It will not only be the most watched SB in history, it will also be the most watched TV show in history.

Just because they have a history together doesn't necessarily mean that Hendricks is one of BB's favorites. Especially considering their history together was not for an extended period.

There are many times a coach and a player have a history together and yet they hate each other.

I'd have to agree that Hendricks did not look to be one of BB's favorites. It doesn't mean he didn't like him, just that he was sort of indifferent towards him. If Hendricks didn't play well in camp he wouldn't have made the team. If he didn't continue to play well he probably would've been in Hershey for most of the year.

That means that Hendricks earned his time with his hard play. The type of play he earned the playing time with was a hard-nosed, gritty, tough, feisty game.

So he may now be one of BB's favorites because he is playing well. If BB's chooses his favorites by who is playing well and then decides to play those favorites, I am all for that.

You mean in the U.S., right? Because a Super Bowl gets less of a worldwide audience than the World Cup Draw, much less any of the games.

Posted by: sgm3 | January 22, 2011 11:44 PM | Report abuse

what other sport could have two teams from Green Bay, Wisconsin and Pittsburgh and have that kinda national appeal?

their TV ratings have been going thru the roof, beating the ratings set from the pre-cable TV era and they're still taking about a potential lockout... how greedy could they be???

Posted by: joek443 | January 22, 2011 11:45 PM | Report abuse

@sgm3

If he hated him, he wouldnt request that the guy be brought in for a tryout. You are missing the point in the whole thing. I am not taking anything away from Hendricks at all. Some times I wonder about comprehension level on here. My point was in the whole thing, due to the history that they have, the case can easily be made that BB views Hendricks as one of is favorits and @capscoach shouldnt use him to try to make an argument that was it.

I don't remember the '88 NFC championship game. I recently moved to SF so I am not a Niners fan. But I am a fan of "just win baby." I think if your a great team you win at home, on the road, or anywhere else they choose to play the game.

Again, what is a quality win? I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I was generally interested in what qualified.

Posted by: SFcapsfan | January 22, 2011 11:52 PM | Report abuse

One of the Caps best wins so far this year. My only regret is that the TML are not the Bruins, Flyers, RW's or other elite team that looks a lot better than the Caps head to head. Maybe the Caps can play this sort of game against the Flyers of the league? Here's to hoping they can.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | January 22, 2011 11:59 PM | Report abuse

I would argue that one definition of a quality win is one in which you show you are competently playing "playoff-style" hockey.
