OK, no reason to be on pins and needles...trade deadline come and gone. Need to show game for the new guys, who also need to show they were worth dealing for. zmega says many players are auditioning for next year...

Could be a winning recipe?

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 1, 2011 5:09 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal

Could be. Could it be enough to get a 60 minute effort from the entire team? If so then winning is almost a given :)

Posted by: hart2014 | March 1, 2011 5:11 PM | Report abuse

@Rhino40 One rule has to be root for the game to end in regulation. 3 point games can be standings killers.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 1, 2011 2:03 PM

@Icehammer97: Though I should have assumed that would be implicit in rule #1, you make an excellent point, so I will indulge you:

7) 60 Minute Men: Any win is good but a regulation win is better. Always root for the outcomes specified in Rules #1 through #6 to occur in regulation time; OT and shootouts only muddy the waters further.

Hell no, Thrashers must make the playoffs this year.

Posted by: richmondphil2 | March 1, 2011 2:07 PM

@richmondphil2:

I must respectfully disagree.

Why?

So ATL doesn't make it despite having half the Blackhawks' Cup-winning roster.

So some of the media again start referring to the division as the "SouthLeast".

So what? It's all worth it if the Caps can (somehow) win it all.

I submit to you that anything which removes potential obstacles to a Caps cup run is a good thing.

@caraveli: Kudos: yours are also good rules. However, my main focus is furthering the goals (no pun intended) of the Caps team as a whole; the individual accolades are all very nice, but Ovie said it best when he said he'd trade all the individual hardware he's earned thus far, for just one Cup...

Rhino40--Regarding Rule #6, when Enemies play Enemies, is it ok to root for the team doctors?

I'm thinking Rangers-Flyers, or Pens-Flyers, for instance.

Posted by: maalesh

@maalesh: Um, no. To me, the difference between a Rival and an Enemy is this: A Rival is someone you want very much to defeat, but there's respect also. OTOH, An Enemy is someone you want to crush, disgrace, and annihilate because you hate 'em, hate 'em, HATE 'EM. IMHO There is only one Enemy, and that Enemy is Pittsburgh.

I do dislike the Rangers and Philthy. A lot--no, a super lot. But I hate the Penguins with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. 'Nuff said!

Posted by: Rhino40 | March 1, 2011 5:27 PM | Report abuse

hart: It's like a fresh start for the organization. Forget the fact we started the year w/o all the right pieces; forget that Boudreau got "figured out" and then has struggled to impliment new system; forget that players played uninspired hockey for most of the last four months.

Go out, play for 60 full minutes, and let the talent make a difference.

And, by God, would the training staff please put Kool Aid in their water bottles!

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 1, 2011 5:32 PM | Report abuse

The real reason we don't want ATL in the Playoffs is Ramsay has Boudreau's number.

KATIE

Caps fans used to call LaCanfora LaCantReporta because of his lack of skills. You're going the same route.

Will you at least get a clear explanation why Ovie8 doesn't bother to practice or go out for morning skates, primarily when the team's at home?

Oh, and how about you find out the stats in those games for when he participates and when he doesn't!

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 1, 2011 6:15 PM | Report abuse

@sirpelleas

...I seem to recall BB kept shuffling lines and he kept Walker out until game 6 of the playoffs of the Montreal series. He was playing well he never got a chance to contribute as much.

@everyone else

...Has anyone seen the lineups yet? I haven't located them anywhere.

Posted by: robostop10 | March 1, 2011 6:17 PM | Report abuse

from @kcarrera

Also the top two lines tonight will likely look like 8-19-18, 21-44-28.

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 1, 2011 6:22 PM | Report abuse

@robostop10,
From a previous thread.

Vogel on PreCap just said the lines for tonight are:

8-19-18
21-44-28
25-90-22
26-15-10
...

Posted by: ThePat

I do not know just how accurate this is since Sturm on 1st line and Knuble on 3rd really makes no sense but hey, with BB none of this matters once the puck drops anyway.

"I do not know just how accurate this is since Sturm on 1st line and Knuble on 3rd really makes no sense but hey, with BB none of this matters once the puck drops anyway."

I figured Knuble would be 3rd line. With 8/21 on the first and 18/28 on the second, that leaves 25/22 for the third.

Sturm on the first line is stranger than Knuble on the third.

So far, I've counted at least one egregious turnover by each of Wideman, Erskine, Carlson and Hannan. Schultz has made a couple of horrible passes as well. He got lucky on one he sent cross ice in the d-zone in I believe the 1st pd. It was a horribly ill-advised pass. A few min ago, he shoved a puck at Backstrom's feet just inside the opposing blueline that naturally led to a change of possession. Backstrom kind of closed in on him but he should've sent it deep.

My feelings exactly. They took the most exciting team in NHL, and the most exciting player in this sport, and turned them into a confused and, yes, BORING team that no longer has a sense of who they are. I will take the flawed team of last year a thousand times over this year's team. Who is responsible for this negative turnaround. Is it all of you who preached defensive hockey? Is it BB trying to please someone?

Posted by: caraveli | March 1, 2011 8:46 PM | Report abuse

6 BS for Alzner. Making up for "aggressive" Carlson multiple times. MVP of the game so far.

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 1, 2011 8:47 PM | Report abuse

It was also amazing that Carlson gave up the first 2-on-1 then only moments later on the same shift, made another.

Being a rook is part of it.

Being a Boudreau-coached d-man is another.

Yea, I understand the defensive improvements this season but Boudreau is still Boudreau and he clearly still preaches some of the same things that he did in the past. There is zero other explanation for a guy like Erskine twice skating around behind the opposing net like he did last week. One of those times, he fired a wild pass backwards through the crease that led to a 3-on-1 that Hannan broke up while getting some help from the forward bobbling the puck.

Bottom line: That kind of crap has Boudreau's chubby, ketchup-stained fingers all over it.

Co-MVPs so far are Alzner and Neuvirth.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:05 PM | Report abuse

We need this one!!! PP lets go!

Posted by: robostop10 | March 1, 2011 9:05 PM | Report abuse

too many men on them, we had the puck, why the whistle?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 1, 2011 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Goalie standing on his head alert everyone. Beep, beep. Goalie hot alert. Beep. They are a real hard working team alert. beep, beep. Beware of the hot goalie. He usually strikes when he plays The Caps since 1974. He could be a high school goalie but we will find a way to make him look like Patrick Roy. Lawson does look a little bit like Ken Dryden. I mean when I think greatest of all time I think Lawson. Of course next game he will yield nine goals.

Posted by: pkme | March 1, 2011 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Oh man, lol...

Bad PP gets worse.

Horrible. Lifeless. Poor execution.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:08 PM | Report abuse

This is f'ing embarrassing!

Posted by: dglelite | March 1, 2011 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Don't know why Hendricks and Brads aren't on the PP. The can't do worse...

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 1, 2011 9:09 PM | Report abuse

The ref whistles very quick. 3-1 The Caps get shutout.

Posted by: pkme | March 1, 2011 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Lol same old Caps.

New guys look like they're fitting in perfectly.

I think I could shut out the caps in goal at this point.

Posted by: VTDuffman | March 1, 2011 9:09 PM | Report abuse

BB has moved Chimera up on the first line.

Posted by: robostop10 | March 1, 2011 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Ovie is frustrating. Sometimes when he plays I can think of at least 10 players off of the top of my head I would rather have!

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 1, 2011 9:11 PM | Report abuse

lol... Carlson nearly gives up another 2-on-1. Or was it a near 3-on-1?

At least we're losing this time.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:11 PM | Report abuse

We need to learn how to give and receive a pass. This is pathetic if we're shut out by the islanders

Posted by: chatton | March 1, 2011 9:12 PM | Report abuse

BB has got to go, sorry to say. Obviously no trade or other little improvements will have any effect. In the last few losses the team reminds me of the last game they played against the Devils after which Hanlon was fired. They need the same kind of dramatic change that BB brought right after Hanlon.

Posted by: caraveli | March 1, 2011 9:12 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are trying to one on one their way through the trap. Dump the effin puck and hit someone. I can't believe Ovechkin, Semin and Wideman are the only three I've seen throw checks so far.

Posted by: robostop10 | March 1, 2011 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Lawson!

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Lawson kinda has that Gary Cheevers swagger to me but then again tonight, he has that Dryden, Cheevers, Parent, Plante, and Fuhr swagger. This is Bull $#!+ and did we not lose 8 straight after the Flash trade?

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | March 1, 2011 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Individual Isles are skating unmolested through 2 and 3 players.

They're pinning us in our own end on the PP while we can barely get into the o-zone on our's.

Neuvirth begging for the lone Cap MVP award over Alzner.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:18 PM | Report abuse

This is a joke right? Or is it a nightmare? Silly me, I thought the new guys would actually have a very positive effect. Wrong. Same crap. Probably worse this time since we're talking about an ECHL/AHL goalie shutting the Caps out.

Oh and another penalty? That's probably going to be it for me, what a joke.

Posted by: VTDuffman | March 1, 2011 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Is Backstrom trying to lose this game single handedly? He's giving it a heck of a try.

Posted by: billracer | March 1, 2011 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Was that slow-reacting Schultz along the boards?

Almost 180 min without a goal at home.

Another shutout in clear sight.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:22 PM | Report abuse

All right here's what we need to score against Nathan "Vezina" Dawson. Another penalty!

Posted by: mja712 | March 1, 2011 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Let's see how long the Caps can go scoreless at home.

Posted by: SirPelleas | March 1, 2011 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: pkme | March 1, 2011 9:23 PM | Report abuse

We look AWFUL at home!

Posted by: Terptwin | March 1, 2011 9:23 PM | Report abuse

No chance Dirtbag, that's all Fat Head knows. Sad isn't it?!

Posted by: BoudreauDaPumpkinHead | March 1, 2011 9:01 PM | Report abusea month since

I know right. This team hasn't been over .500 in a month since Movember if I remember the graphic correctly.

People can argue about weather or not this team has the roster to win the cup, but at the very least we should be able to agree that the team should easily be over .500 in every month of the regular season. Maybe one rough month where a couple of OTL's push them below .500.

BB is a nice guy, but he should now have over a million in the bank and be in demand for the rest of his career after his time with the Caps and Bears. We owe him nothing.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | March 1, 2011 9:23 PM | Report abuse

What's up with the CAPS!!! They are getting shut-out yet again. If memories serves, this would be the 10th time and last season they only had one. What the heck.

Arnott on the assist. Now win in OT.

Posted by: SirPelleas | March 1, 2011 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I stand corrected: Arnott's skates way better than I thought he would and Wideman can skate as well....

Now, should I mix the goat's blood with warm milk?

Maybe can go to Gibson's and suggest a new "goat's blood" cocktail. One part goat's blood, one part bailey's, one part bourbon.

How dare you say that!

Everybody else wants to forget the facts.

lol

That was awesome though. I enjoyed it. We were much better in this game than in the Isles' barn but we need to find ways to get dirty goals in games like this. We racked up SOG but after the first 10 min of the game, most of them were easy saves. The few golden opportunities we had, we flubbed on and even those didn't involved us mucking it up in the crease. I did like Arnott's drive to the net early that he flipped on net off a Laich centering pass. You can bank on he and Laich sticking together for a while.

MVPs in no particular order:

Neuvirth
Alzner
Laich
Arnott
Ovechkin (poor overall game but the clutch factor gets him votes)

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I had forgotten just how strong Ovie is. What a shot!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 1, 2011 9:41 PM | Report abuse

hlalor - Seriously???

You bring up cr@p like that in the middle of a comeback!

I agree about BB, but seriously not the time...Enjoy the win! Enjoy the two points!

Let's use this to springboard a win streak...extend this against the Blues!

The BB talk has GOT TO STOP until the offseason...He is going nowhere now. These last 20 games into the playoffs is about the players meshing and making a run for the Cup.

Let's all hope they are up to the task!!!

Wideman with almost 27 minutes of ice time. Holy cow!

WIDERMAN +2 tonight who would of thought

Posted by: patljr7 | March 1, 2011 9:45 PM | Report abuse

The Islanders are one of the only teams in the league who can lose a game when outplaying a team for 59 minutes in regulation. Yes, we had some chances before that last minute, but nearly all of them were shot high or wide.

I'm happy for the two points and even happier that Arnott was involved, but I would prefer the Caps end this trend of sleeping on home ice ;-)

Props to Neuvy btw - the score could've easily been 5-0 if not for him!

tmac - good points...And I agree Ovi didnt have his best game through most of the game.

But he did come HUGE there at the end!

backstrom must be feeling a little relief after getting called twice for penalties in the last 7 min.
neuvy stood out again - congrats on win #20 - one more sets the caps rookie record
ovi needs to realize that the one-on-one has a better chance of working with 4-on-4
closer to a 60 minutes effort even though it took them 59+ to finally score.
build on it boys

And Carlson needs to forget that this game ever happened.

4 giveaways and quite possibly the lousiest shift of his career on the one where they scored.

On the other hand, Alzner was a quiet hero in this one. He covered up for Carlson's and other's mistakes all game long.

7 blocked shots for #27

That has to be a career best. He more than double the next best total from either team.

Night's like tonight make you better able to deal with Varlamov's health woes. Neuvirth was enormous.

All this proves to Ovie is that he can do whatever he wants and everything will be alright.

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 1, 2011 9:44 PM

There is absolutely an element of truth in this and it doesn't just apply to him.

Once again, don't say this kind of stuff around the koolaiders. They can't comprehend this kind of stuff. All that matters all the time is the result. They don't get that a lack of accountability and attention to the process has a huge effect on future results. It's not hard to understand. I don't think the aiders are dumb. They just want to live in a land of rainbows and unicorns. Critical thinking, even after wins, his a foreign concept to them and serves no purpose for us fans or the coaches and players.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 1, 2011 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Here's my summary having not read any of above (so forgive for repeating).

Good 1st period with nothing to show.

Lethargic for next 39 minutes.

Neuvy keeps us in it.

Terrible giveaway Carlson.

Backie continues to take the dumbest penalties in the last 10 mins.

Arnott comes up when it counts. Sturm pretty invisible. Wideman...?

Ovi one of his signature plays from the past.

This team has tons of talent. A game like tonight, with new guys on board, could get them their confidence back. This could be a turning point, which of course would get McPhee lots of credit, when in reality he's only digging himself out of the hole he created (oops, I'm not to criticize).

The Blues game is huge (HUUUGE!). Let's see them do it again without the 39-minute letdown.

BTW, did ribeye and Five Rivers cab.

Let's hear it now from Jonathan6.

tmac - Really thought was that Varly's latest injury issues had finally irritated the Caps enough to make a move and trade him, especially since he is not signed past this year.

Very impressed with both Wideman and Arnott.....two good pickups. Wideman is much better as the QB on the PP than Carlson. I wasn't impressed with Sturm on the first line. He doesn't look like he has the speed he used to and isn't a presence in front of the net. The Caps should stick with Knuble on the first line and Laich-Arnott-Semin as the 2nd line.

Alzner had a great game and kept the Isles from getting at least two goals on odd man rushes. He is a nice balance to Carlson, who looked awful tonight. Combo of Hannan and Wideman looked very good together. Both are experience and don't make the TO's of the young defenseman.

your opinion...do you think they re-sign him to a new contract at the end of the year w Neuvy signed for 3 years?

Posted by: dglelite | March 1, 2011 9:57 PM

My guess is definitely. They aren't going to give up on either of the kid goalies yet. I think they genuinely like both and realize that the sample size for both of them is relatively small. I imagine both goalies will be here for at least another year or two unless there is career-threatening injury or they are able to get an incredible return in a future trade.

Nice to see Semin fight to keep the puck in the zone on the goal. Why he cannot play that intense pre empty net is what makes Semin Semin. Great win for the new trio to start, and shows them we can win when we give 110%. Need to carry this mojo rest of the season but easier said then done I know.

I bet GMGM was squeezing his water bottle to the size of a toothpick until Laich scored the goal to tie it! Can you imagine adding 3 veteran guys to change the dynamic, and then geeting shutout again?
I thought Hendricks, Wideman, and Arnott all played well. Sturm's speed looked good, but he seemed a little out of sync positionally at times, but that is to be expected. Sweet goal by Ovechkin!

Hannan and Wideman both made egregious turnovers in this game. I'd say that it's Wideman and players getting adjusted to things but Wideman has a rep of being a turnover machine. Don't know how much of that is fact vs fiction or if it is just an exaggeration based on a handful of plays but a lot of Bruins fans will tell you that he's a turnover machine.

Just a joke but did you see the goal he scored early in the season when Kopitar flipped it off his back. He was all up in the crease and fell over the goalie and Kopitar used his back as a backboard... lol

I also saw another highlight from when he was with the Bruins where he was taken down by a d-man on top of the goalie and he one-handed the puck in from an awkward position.

@tominsocal1

I agree with most of what you said.

However, the 2nd penalty on Backstrom was Erskine's fault. If Erskine doesn't make the high risk and dumb play to go for the big hit and just pushes the Islander off of the puck instead, the Islanders don't get that opportunity. Backstrom was forced to take that penalty because of the poor play by Erskine.

I thought Sturm played very well in the first 20 minutes, but he didn't seem to do much afterward. He looked hesitant. Could be a by-product of playing on a line with Ovie and Backstrom as new players seem to be hesitant when playing with them. I did like the speed he provided on the opposite wing of Ovie and he has the hands to make some nice passes and score goals(unlike Chimera).

I thought Wideman played a strong game. He had a bad initial turnover but was good in the defensive zone and made some nice outlet passes. In addition, you could tell how much better he was at getting his shots through from the point than the other Caps defenseman. He and Hannan seemed a little off on some of their passes but I think that is a by-product of not having much time playing with each other.

I thought Arnott played well and you could see how much more room Semin has on the ice now that other teams have to pay attention to the center. I really like the potential of the Laich/Arnott/Semin line. In addition, I think whenever Fehr comes back it will be Chimera who ends up sitting (or possibly being waived to create cap room).

Semin played a very strong game, and he was the one who made a great play along the boards to keep the puck in that led to Laich's tying goal. That was great boardwork done with hustle and a crafty kick of the puck along the wall. Semin gets criticized a lot, but he deserves credit for that play.

I thought Alzner played another very solid game.

Carlson had a poor game. A few giveaways and flubs in the offensive zone. Erskine play was poor too. He had a few good hits, but had a bad penalty, an egregious giveaway in the first that led to a 2-on-0, and the poor play late in the 3rd that led to the 2nd Backstrom penalty.

If the Caps can have both of them for the next couple of years, they will be in grea shape back there!

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
WOWOWOWOWOOOOWOWOWOOW. What a thriller. At times this team looked so dominant and at times - some of those weaknesses showed up and they were running around. But what a way to not give up even when this goalie came out of nowhere to nearly shut the door.

Ovechkin: Get back to practice and play a better game as a whole. LOL I kid a bit but WOW that's how you show up in the clutch. World class by the great 8.

NEUVIRTH: Star of the game if not for Ovie's goal. He kept his team in it.

WIDEMAN: Love the way he will fit in. Speed and puck mover. Great stuff.

CARLSON: Son I'll chalk up this game as a mulligan for you. No hesitating and fumbling the puck anymore - ok? Ok.

ARNOTT: Why has this guy been so successful - because if he's not sending pucks at the net - he's going to the net. What a pass to Laich to tie it in the final minute!!!!!!!!!! And that redirect off Laich's pass in the opening period - beautiful.

At least the team attacked and got aggressive with the new guys in the line up. Good to see Sturm out there as well making things happen.

An exciting game against a feisty Islanders team. They will get better in time but c'mon the Caps got it done.

Bartender - a Long Island Ice Tea after that game please.

It's been a two point night.

More things to consider in that vein...

--They've also lost a league-leading 444 man games to injuries.

--They aren't spending anywhere near the cap limit so they are far from maxing out available resources.

--They're gonna get another very high pick in the next draft.

Yup, there are plenty of reasons for Isles fans to be optimistic about the future, everything considered.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 1, 2011 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Pay attention, folks. In all ways except the scoring, this game was the inverse of the last game. In the last game we had a strong showing by Neuvy that kept us in it until the end despite their many quality scoring chances. In this game they had a strong showing by Lawson that kept them in it until the end. This game could easily have been more along the lines of a 7 - 2 rout in favor of the Caps, just like last game could have easily been a 5 - 2 rout in favor of the Islanders.

The two things I take away from this? The Caps are on the upswing, and they'll be tough to beat in a seven game series. If they can manage to stay close in games like this past weekend's, they'll be fine. And if tonight's game played out the same way again with the same scoring chances, the Caps probably win much more handily.

And for all you out there dissing the Islanders for their terrible overall record, they won 8 out of 14 games in February. 3 of those wins came against teams currently in playoff position, and 2 more came against Ottowa, who are sitting at 9th in the East. They're much better than their record suggests, and if we have to beat them with last minute heroics that's nothing to scoff at.

I'm not sure what Arnott was referring to when he talked to Jill S., but he may have been surprised to see the "Club Ted" atmosphere here - jovial coach, nice owner, non-aggressive local press, easy practices, no real accountability for lazy play, etc. He apparently is not the kind of guy who holds anything back if he sees something he doesn't like. He could have a positive impact in the locker room, but he will have credibility only as long as he is producing on the ice.

@sgm3 - yes on Semin - he played an intense game with a lot of effort...but...I think there were times 5 on 5 he should've made the pass...Tonight the Caps were "too much the dribble boys" (to quote the long long ago coach of the Washington Whips NASL team) and tried to do too much solo.

And yes, I think a veteran like Arnott could sit down with Semin and Ovie and have some heart to hearts. Not scolding, but a good mentor figure with experience in the league helping them find themselves. I think they both want to excel and he might be the kind of guy who can actually reach them...

But as Tom says: now's the time to enjoy the Kool Aid. The Goat's blood always tastes better in May or (hopefully) June in any event. I was a big "No don't get Arnott" guy before the deadline but I thought he was terrific tonight. Great pickup. Wideman, likewise. With Sturm, he himself said he was still playing his way back into shape.

1) tmac: Thanks for joing me on the fence for even the tiniest sip of Kool-Aid. This is the most positive I've felt about the Caps since Game 5 ended last April.

2) Yes, they should sign Varly. Especially with the price coming down.

3) sgm - funny :) but for some time you've been saying Laich was no more than 3rd liner! I've been touting him as solid second line for several years. Maybe we just needed a #2C!

4) Yes, Wideman looked good after he calmed down. And great hit on Taveras!

5) BB put Sturm on 1st line (as RW?) so he could take the faceoffs. But it didn't work.

6) Also, sgm, you and I were the two big Alzner supporters when many dark siders knocked on him. Keep the faith there. He might (MIGHT) end up as valuable as carlson. Notice Alzner tonight went on the attack, behind enemy net and even laying out a hit!

7) Finally, I wanted Umberger partly because he'd speak out against our lazy style. But maybe we get that with Arnott. We still need a #2C next year too. We'll see. So far, so good.

8) BB called the Isles "kids?" If so, he's an idiot.

Don't get too carried away though! We only played 21 good minutes!

Man, tragic end to the Dal/Phx game. Did anybody catch that?

Lehtonen and the Stars were pitching a shutout. Lehtonen had stopped 25 of 25 shots and the Stars were up 2-0 with under 4 min remaining.

The Coyotes score 2 goals on their next 2 shots, the last coming with their goalie pulled and about 30 sec remaining. The Phx crows is going nuts. Thrilling comeback in a tight WC playoff race.

Ensuing faceoff... Ribiero ends up with the puck skating into the Yotes d-zone with about 13 sec left. The ref makes a ticky tack hooking call on Vrbata (it was the right call but a soft one that could've easily been let go... Ribiero sold it big time).

Phx wins the faceoff on the PK. Puck goes to the corner, the Phx d-man trying to freeze it along the boards. I think it was Ribiero that frees up the puck and sends it to the slot where Eriksson makes another pass instead of shooting to a wide open Benn. Goal. Game over.

Tippet was livid as were the fans and players. Two Yotes got ejected after the goal. Real tough loss for Phx, esp. considering the standings. The ref could've let the call go or maybe given 2 to Ribiero for diving.

Oh, sgm, yes, we are 100% in agreement, they can waive Chimera any time they want. At least we got rid of one bad contract with Steckel moving. Chimera, Sloan and Poti to go. I want Hannan n=back next year, so that means trading Schultz. Fine. If Arnott plays like this, and has anything left, he can share 2/3 center role next year with Johansson. So I might want him too. Goodbye Perreault for sure. And if choice is Knuble or Arnott...too early to call, but Knuble is several years older, even though he's played less total minutes. Oh well, I said I wasn't going to talk about next year. But no McPhee criticism! And positive attitude!

That sounds too good to be true. I doubt he could even glean all that in his short time here. My guess is that he either saw some smaller things on the ice that needed to be addressed or McPhee/BB pulled him aside and asked him to join Knuble in getting the kids to wake up and smell the coffee. I'm actually kind of leaning towards the latter cuz I don't think he would say stuff like that 24 hrs into his tenure as a Cap without some kind of encouragement.

One final note while the rest of you are dreaming of sugar plums and a Caps victory over the Blues...

This is a confession. I know, I know, you all think I've been sitting on the fence. I lied. I know, it's hard to admit it (wiping away tears). Look, sometimes, in the wee hours, I'd sneak off. OK, call me a cheater. Call me a liar. They say confession is good for the soul. OK, so I will confess.

1) I let PhilR put a black robe on me.
2) I visted kcbrichmond's cave.
3) I watched while joek443, cstanton1 and tmac2yao held down a goat while Hunterforcoach slit its neck. When they passed around the goblet, I took some swigs.
4) I had intimate relations with Sarah while she was wearing a Crosby jersey.

OK, that last one isn't true. (But would be if she let me!)

Now, though, I'm back on the other side of the fence. SAOTI is still sitting there. Cap't Kirk and capscoach had a nice little table set up, selling Kool Aid to kids and mothers along the road. I have tried to help, staying in the background. Sometimes the mothers look at me with furrowed brows like they are judgiung me harshly. One mother, I wiggled my tongue at her, but mostly I think I am over the goat's blood.

The captain has been showing me pictures of Dale Hunter with the ECF trophy from 98. Capscoach reads newspaper recaps to me of games where Berube beat up enemy goons. That made me feel all warm inside.

Can I stay on the wagon? Only time will tell. Another game with only a 5-minute effort...more dumb penalties late in the game by Backie...continuous line changes by Boudreau...anything can send you over the precipice.

For now though I will sleep in my Bondra jersey and I will keep one object next to my heart.

It's that straw-man baiting that I like best from you.

Very proud of you - negative, in the form of haiku, but nothing personal. And actual happiness when they won (mainly).

Oh, and the Isles goalie was legitimately on tonight. And the Caps legitimately - once again - did very little of the stuff you have to do in such a situation. Oh well. Exciting stuff nonetheless.

" sgm - funny :) but for some time you've been saying Laich was no more than 3rd liner! I've been touting him as solid second line for several years. Maybe we just needed a #2C!"

@tominsocal

Yes I have, but if he continues to play like that on the 2nd line with Arnott and Semin then I will gladly retract my statement. I hope you are correct and that Laich truly is a 2nd line LW who was just in need of a 2nd line center. If so, then I am getting even more optimistic about this year.

The one thing to hope for is not too many injuries before the playoffs. There is really nothing that can be done to control that, but hopefully the Caps are relatively healthy entering the playoffs.

I am very curious to see how this would be when you substitute Fehr for Chimera and Green for Erskine (or Schulz for the Schulz haters, but it is going to be Erskine). A top 6 D of

Alzner/Carlson
Hannan/Wideman
Schulz/Green

That looks like a very solid defensive core that will help the Caps control the puck a lot more and exit the zone quicker. In addition, it should cut down Green's minutes too leaving him fresher.

Hopefully Sturm can work himself into decent shape by April. My guess is that he will be given some nights off(probably back to backs) to stay rested.

@tominsocal - I look at that mug with the smiley face and it reminds me - ever-so-slightly - of BB. You're a brave man to trust those packets of dried goat's blood. Best to be safe and test the purity: put a drop of spit on a hockey trading card picture of Alexander Semin and sprinkle a little of the powder there. If it starts to sizzle and turn purple, it's strong but it's still okay to use. If you can distinctly hear it making a bleating sound, then you've got to cut it...

And you can bet that gov't attendance at Caps games will increase dramatically.

sgm: Delete Schultz and insert Erskine in most situations.

Yes, I think they will use Sturm sparingly. He was like one of those souped-up, quarter-miler cars tonight - good for about ten seconds.

Here, for you all, a trivia question:

I did not look this up. I'm doing this from memory, the "steel trap" as I call it.

Now, as the years pass, and I take a spot of wine, now and then, the possibility exits that the steel trap could have a leak.

So here is the trivia question I rolled around inside this mushy brain of mine while watching last night's game:

How many members of the Washington Capitals franchise also were members, at one point, of the German Olympic Hockey Team? And what are their names?

You can't look it up. That would be cheating. I think the answer is 4 and that I know of three of them. The one I can't recall the name (could look it up, that would be cheating) is a forward from some time back.

Bonus questions:

French team?
Swiss team?
Venezuelan team?

So I finally saw the interview clip of Arnott on Sorenson's CSN report.

Awesome. Just. Completely. Awesome.

Some of these guys are probably getting the message right about now that play time is over and they better be ready to get to work.

I love it!
