King-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Green

all i can say is. GO ISLES!!! whooooohooo what a game! No matter how miserable their season its gotta be a great feelin to spank the Pens and then get complete and total revenge by punishing them for what they did. They went after Talbot how many times? wow. Matt Martin, Micheal Haley (who the Caps actually invited once to a rookie tourney), Gillies, Hamonic. Those guys all stepped up against a very tough Pens team and got their licks in. Just loved to see that kinda old time hockey make a brief reappearance.

You got bad teams who bend over and take it hard. And then you got teams like the Isles who showed a ton of spunk and team togetherness. There was some real hatred out there last night. Not to bag on the Caps anymore than already occurs, but no way do the Caps respond to the Pens the way the Isles did. We could be up 6 zip and not take retribution out on the ice to anywhere near the degree the Isles did. For one, our guys don't fight well. Two, Bruce wouldn't have it. And some fans would support him saying "we don't want suspensions, whats the point we already won the game".

Well take a page out of the Isles book. That's how you do it. And you don't necessarily square up either. You jump em, and you beat em to the ice. The squaring up thing is only for teams who haven't run you thru a gamut of cheap shots. The Pens not only physically abused the Isles, they beat em on the scoreboard and rubbed their noses in it after the fact.

Just too bad Matt Cooke wasn't in the game last night. I think he wouldve gotten the snot beat out of him and not even Godard or Engelland could've stopped it. In some games with that kind of runaway emotion, even heavies like Godard won't deter anything from occurring. The last time the caps responded like that was under Glen Hanlon. And I hope our future coach whoever he is can incorporate SOME of Hanlon's old-school tactics. Because it'll never happen under Bruce. We've already had quite a few cheapshots over the past 3 yrs leveled at our players without nary a response or glare back. And King has been an utter waste of an acquisition in that regard. But that blame falls more on the GM and coach, not the player.

"A guy who would challenge the goalie, that's kind of a cheap move," Penguins defenseman Kris Letang said. "We're going to play our game [April 8], but there will be consequences."

--------------------

nice! I'm sure they will be consequences.

One thing about the Pens. They do like to get the last shots in. Last night's game reminded me a bit of the Wings-Avs rivalry although that spanned more games and a longer period of hostility. But the Wings finally got sick and tired of the Avs pushing them around they crossed the "line" several times with cheapshot hits, dirty fighting, etc to get the Avs back. Not that the Avs (or the Pens last night) just sat back and took it because they're proud and tough franchises.

But the victims definitely got their licks in. I think the Pens will be more than ready this time. The Isles response and emotion definitely caught them off guard last night.

--------------------

haha. Stupid Letang. He got beat on seemingly every goal last night - he was terrible. Letang = Mike Green before he figured out how to play D.

Look, it takes two to fight, and Johnson was clearly more than willing to go. Good for the Islanders - it was fantastic to watch Talbot get rocked.

Games like last night are what make the NHL watchable - after watching the Isles play (mostly) terrible games all season, imagine what their fans must have felt like walking out of the arena last night - PROUD. When's the last time we can say that about walking out of Verizon?

Posted by: NickG32 | February 12, 2011 11:27 AM | Report abuse

Lots of class being shown by both teams on the island tonight. I didn't know they were shooting the remake of Slap Shot already.

Posted by: icehammer97

class has nothing to do with hockey. That's what post-series handshakes are for.

That's where after you beat each others brains in over a grueling 7 game series, then you still line up and shake each others' hands and grin about it later.

(unless its Dino and Claude).

The Pens-Isles game wasn't "classless" in the least. That was true emotion showing up, and a great example of team togetherness on the part of the Isles, and the Penguins responded though not to the same degree. The Pens are bullies. And they got some of their own medicine last night. But even being bullies isn't the same as having no class. Not on the ice anyway. Its one of those times you give props to both teams. To the Pens for maintaining a very rugged team for the past few years. And for the Isles who stepped up, on, and trampled over their bully last night.

As a Caps fan, I sure would like to see this played out against some of our own rivals.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 12, 2011 11:30 AM | Report abuse

I like Letang because he's an offensive undersized dman who plays the game with a lot of emotion and plays it with a nasty edge. I'd take him on my team if I was looking for an offensive dman.

But for him to whine about "cheap" shots on a team that has 3 or 4 guys who routinely dole out cheap shots, its a tad hypocritical.

Either way, that's just 2 hardnosed teams going at it. And for once, the Pens don't come out on top.

And yeah, I haven't "proud" of the Caps like that in a long long time. This team doesn't have the sack to bond together like that and fight for each other. Can you imagine Gordo or Chimera or Schultz or Semin trying to survive in a game like that? Bruce himself would be soiling himself on the bench.

When Hanlon unleashed his guys on Atlanta, his postgame comment was dead-on. He said not to make a big deal about it because just a few short years ago that was the norm in the NHL. And to have everyone focus on a game where there were 3 or 4 fights in a row was just ridiculous handwringing on the part of newbie hockey fans who don't know squat.

Couldn't freaking agree more.

I'll take a game like last night's over all the scripted squaring off fights I've had to witness in the "new" nhl. You fight cuz you're pi__ed off. You don't fight to put on a show for the fans. That kind of fight has little meaning in the game of hockey. It does little to boost your team. But to see your teammates battling it out and giving it back in spades to a team like the Pens, that was probably the best any Isles fan or player has felt all season. And probably longer.

The only criticism I have for the way the Isles handled last night was, Haley should've just bowled over the goalie instead of letting him square off. The same way they ran over Talbot and Tangradi, they should've jumped the goalie and let the fireworks commence. Squaring off like that allowed Godard to come off the bench in time to save Johnson. But at least it got Godard a 10 gamer :)

Go Caps

________________

I don't disagree that the win over the Pens was a great win; but I think we're thinking about "proud" in a different sense.

Islanders fans walk out of their arena most nights saying the same thing..."Same old Islanders, different night."

There's nothing like watching a team/cheering for a team you can see come together right before your eyes. I watch the Caps play and it doesn't seem like any of them care about what happens to their teammates. You knew watching the game last night that the Islanders were together and they weren't messing around. I haven't been "proud" of the Caps in that regard in quite a long time.

Posted by: NickG32 | February 12, 2011 11:47 AM | Report abuse

another clueless comment.

Hanlon's old school tactics don't guarantee a Cup win. Its just PART OF THE PACKAGE of many teams who have won Cups. Open your eyes a bit and it may come into focus.

And you can be a proud team or have a proud moment in the middle of a dismal season. If you don't get those shades of grey, I don't know how to explain it. There's a difference between what the players do on the ice that is independent of the direction of their front office. The isles players can only control what they do, they can't control how their team is managed. So for them, yes they had a very proud moment.

So take your 68 vanilla points and suck on it. Hope it lasts !

cstanton1:
so do you believe the caps have a zero percent chance at the cup this year - or the same chance that the 14 teams that don't make the playoffs have?
-------------------

not a zero chance. But not a realistic chance.

IF McPhee pulls a complete aboutface and makes 3 or 4 dynamite trades in the next 2 weeks, my opinion would change. But as it currently stands, knowing that Poti is due to reenter the lineup, not seeing Beags in there, not having any faith in Schultz, seeing MP entrenched in this lineup, knowing McPhee's past 13 yr track record..
taking all that into account, I'd give em less than a 5% chance of winning the Cup. Probably less than a 10% chance of advancing past the 2nd round. And less than a 50% chance of advancing past the 1st.

My only hope is we face a really really good team in the 1st round. Then lets let the chips fall where they may. No excuses if they lose. No excuses if they win. If they beat a really good team in the 1st round, no doubt that they deserved to win the series barring something ridiculously unforeseen.

Then we'll get to the 2nd round and talk about that.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 12, 2011 11:53 AM | Report abuse

Can you imagine what a game like last night COULD do for a team like the Islanders? Knowing that whatever happens, the guy next to you has your back?

I wouldn't be surprised if you saw a different, more competitive Islanders team for the rest of the season. Now, if they could just keep a healthy goalie...

I also happen to think that a game last night may just be what the Caps need to wake up. If winning a great road game against the team ahead of you in the division standings doesn't do it, and the 3-0 win over the Penguins on National TV doesn't do it, what in the world is going to??

Posted by: NickG32 | February 12, 2011 11:56 AM | Report abuse

I watch the Caps play and it doesn't seem like any of them care about what happens to their teammates.
-------------------------
its because they don't. Or they don't care ENOUGH to involve themselves in confrontations.

Hockey is still a game of battles. From fighting for loose pucks to crease battles to actual fights and fracases. Some teams have the stomach for that, some don't. When you construct a team that is made up largely of players who haven't shown any inclination to insert themselves into those kinds of battles, its no surprise when it doesn't happen. An old-school coach could get more of the lineup, but not MUCH more. Still need a few roster moves to make that happen. Mainly dumping the "role" players who don't play that role very well. And maybe one addition on D and one in the top 6.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 12, 2011 11:57 AM | Report abuse

"So take your 68 vanilla points and suck on it. Hope it lasts !"
----
So your point is that it is better to have a team with 45 points that likes to hit than a team with 68 points because they play "vanilla hockey"? In other words, hits are more important than goals.

Posted by: isthatallthereis | February 12, 2011 11:58 AM | Report abuse

OK - dont fool yourselves...aside from some cosmetic change this is the team that the Caps will bring into the playoffs.

Not sure this will happen but the "best matchup for the Caps" - to win and make a statement might be against the TB Lightning. So if either team struggles down the stretch maybe it happens.

_____________

I'll buy this point. They lack the energy that get's built off of confidence, which is itself built off of goal scoring and winning. Not winning makes for frustration and a tense locker room. That's why I'll fault GM, Bruce and Ovie to a point. This team is looking for answers, wanting to win, but there leaders aren't leading them there.

They were flying pretty high last year when the wins were rolling in. But I don't think they've mentally recovered from the disappointment of last year's 1st round defeat.

Agree totally - great points. While the Islanders may not have the most skill in the NHL, what they do have now is that confidence, and in more than one way: they've got each other's back and they can win over a team like the Pens (even though they were depleted by injuries.)

The Caps might have a ton of skill, but they've got seemingly no confidence in themselves or each other. That's gotta change somehow or it'll be the same old story in round 1 of the playoffs.

Laich needs to do better with the puck inside the d-zone. A lazy play nearly cost us.

King did OK early in the fight but he ran out of steam. I wonder how much that had to do with him barely seeing the ice and feeling like an outcast. It's hard to get pumped up when you barely play.

Interesting to hear that Jack Johnson thought Backstrom was the best amateur he faced before they both got to the NHL.

Semin has to learn to shot on goal. Those hard misses off the glass just come out again for a rush the other way. If the goalie blocks it or smothers it, the Caps have a chance to forecheck/cycle/shoot off the rebound. Those long, hard shots are just selfish.

If that makes you feel better...

No doubt 19 ain't right but 8 has independently underperformed pretty much all season.

And if he's that dependent on another player to perform well, is he really worth $10 mil per and building around?

It's not 19's fault that 8 has had grinder-like hands of stone for half of the season. It isn't 19's fault that 8 has whiffed or misfired on countless shots. It ain't 19's fault that 8 chooses to skate into traffic repeatedly and looks slower than he has to date in his career. It ain't 19's fault that 8 rarely wins puck battles along the walls, etc.....

Semin still needs time to get his "stuff" back...and Green, it's not his fault on that goal...Sally Schultz should have been stronger in front on the rebound, or Nikki Backstrom should get the led out of his you know what and hustle back to the net...

Erskine has been horrible today. He has had 3 egregious turnovers in the Caps zone today. One in the first and two in the 2nd that have led to glorious scoring opportunities for the Kings.

If it was Schulz who had committed those turnovers he would be getting crucified on here. Erskine had improved his play this year and has been playing much better, but the past few games he has been playing much more like last year's Erskine than this year's Erskine.

Yes he has a big hit or two, but he has three or four turnovers in his own zone that lead to glorious scoring opportunities for the opposing team. That is not a good tradeoff. I would rather have the two or three less hits per game if that means 3 or 4 less glorious scoring chances.

He has been horrible today, absolutely horrible. If he continues to play like this the Caps will need to get a D to replace him.

That was one of the many reasons that some of us were stunned when he didn't do anything of significance in the offseason. You could see this coming from a mile away. I've never seen a team have that kind of postseason meltdown and have the GM do so little to shake things up.

First team in NHL history to lose Game 7s on home ice in 3 consecutive seasons, right?

One round of changes was needed this past offseason and another before the upcoming trade deadline to have a chance of fixing things and addressing enough needs.

I believe one of Erskine's turnovers was the result of him not having any forwards present him with a target. I'm talking about the one behind our net. I didn't see the entire view up ice but my guess is he saw all Kings and was pretty much forced to try to hold onto the puck and buy more time. Maybe he could've rifled the puck to nobody and hope that the Kings already in our zone weren't able to get out and back in quickly if a King intercepted the puck in the neutral zone.

Bottom line: Erskine doesn't try to do that if he doesn't have to.

Other than that, I did see him make some sketchy plays but that's always been one of his weaknesses. He's been a little better in that area this season but if he isn't keeping it simple for one reason or another, he's prone to get in trouble.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 12, 2011 2:19 PM | Report abuse

at least when Erskine has an "off" game you can still count on him to bring the lumber.

The reason Sarge gets criticized on his off-games is he acts like a pansy.

I thought that 2 of Boudreau's supposed strong points were motivating players and coaching the power play.

These guys look highly unmotivated and the PP stinks.

Furthermore, if we are going to continue in this direction of responsible, team defense hockey, what is the point of having Boudreau coach them? That is not his strength.

FLA...I am angry, because every year I deal with optimism then quick heartbreak.

I agree BB is out of his league in the NHL. The Caps will get destroyed on this road trip, I bet, so it's time to go coach and 2C shopping GMGM. If GMGM can't find a coach and 2C, he can go, too.

I've been on the fire BB bandwagon since last years playoff. When watching HBO 24/7, I kept thinking: "Why can't that be our coach?" I've tried to stay positive & think the team can have success with BB behind the bench/ I'm sure it will take missing the playoffs or another early round knockout to get rid of him.

I thought last year was finally the break thru year. Then I thought the Caps would add some missing players & get rid of the coach & break thru this year. Now, I'm sure it's: "Just what till next year", again.

Erskine was horrible. Erskine was behind the goal and had a defenseman to his left. He was chased around, a D-man should have the ability to get away from one attacking player when they are behind the goal like that. That lack of skill will cost the Caps multiple goals in the playoffs if Erskine is playing. Getting a big hit here or there does NOT make up for egregious turnovers by a defenseman.

It makes zero sense to have Boudreau at this point. He doesn't know how to coach a team to play the right way in all 3 zones.

His offensive system comes at the expense of defense.

Now he is at a loss for what to demand of them with this defense-first approach.

His supposed strengths were his motivation techniques and the PP. We look flatter by the day and the PP is horrible.

Get rid of McPhee and Boudreau or we are going nowhere. The window is closing for us to do something.

Leonsis needs to get pissed and quit the rainbows and unicorn crap. McPhee is terrible. He always has been. I want him gone from the organization entirely. Don't give him any role.

People, if you are so fed up with the team that you feel you are going to lose it and are demanding that that if the team doesn't make changes you will lose it even more, then don't watch.

The Capitals are selling this hockey team as a source of entertainment. If you do not like a particular good, the only realistic way you can show it(i.e. not doing anything insane) is to not purchase that good any longer.

So stop buying tickets and going to the games, stop watching the games on tv, stop frequenting the websites and stop purchasing anything related to the Caps(i.e. shirts, jerseys, cups, etc.). That is the power you have as a customer.

If you continue to purchase those things, watch the games and frequent the websites, then you are all bark and no bite.

Run McPhee out of town.

Bring in a coach that can get some of these spoiled arrogant punks of hockey players to grow up and earn their paychecks. They need to learn how to play the complete game.

Bring in a GM who has a clue how to build a balanced roster.

If you can't feel the dead end this team is currently headed toward, you haven't been watching this team... at least not without the homer glasses on.

Change is needed NOW!

this game started at 4:30am local time for me. I have mixed feelings about having slept "in" and watched only the 3rd period. On one hand, I only saw one period of pathetic DC hockey, but on the other I missed an increasingly rare event -- Ovechkin scoring.

*sigh* The biggest myth about this year for the Caps is that they are better defensively. Yes, they allow fewer goals but it's only because they've changed their offensive style, so that they give up so many fewer chances. Whenever they do actually have to play in their zone, they're not any better at it than in previous years. Boy did we ever see that in this one.

If it was Schulz who had committed those turnovers he would be getting crucified on here. Erskine had improved his play this year and has been playing much better,
--sgm

actually, Erskine was playing well 2 yrs ago too. His game actually started getting better back when he got paired with
Eminger. They both fed off each other and made a good pairing.

You're only noticing it now because he's been getting more ice time with Poti and Sarge injured at times this year.

And the thing about Erskine is, when he does make a bad pass like he did v Pittsburgh, he recovers with a lot more urgency in his play. He made a bad pass to a Pens player and then went and cleaned him out and took the puck back. Sarge makes a bad pass and then he backpedals and collapses instead of being aggressive on the puck carrier.

btw, Kyle Clifford had a strong game for the Kings today. The Kings know how to develop talent. They gave Clifford a lot of 4th line time this year and then started to play him in some different situations. That's how you bring along your top picks if you want them to have a well rounded game. Clifford always has been gritty so it makes perfect sense to let him get a feel of the NHL grind game playing on a checking or energy line.

I don't want to hear about five years from now. The future is now!

McPhee is the source of all that is wrong with this team.

He needs to go but if they at least get rid of Boudreau, who is a lesser problem, then Leonsis will see that the issues with this team extend well beyond the coach. McPhee will have nowhere to hide at that point.

McPhee probably wants to keep Boudreau as long as possible so that Boudreau can be the fall guy when this rebuild becomes a clear cut failure. That is of course assuming that despite his arrogant ways in public, he is starting to doubt himself behind the scenes.

Ted needs to get angry and quit this Business of Crappiness junk. It ain't working. Enough is enough. You're running out of kool-aid, fat man!

SGM3 - That is about the DUMBEST thing I think anyone could say...especially to someone who is a lifetime fan.

I have watched the Caps through the good times, the bad times and even the times that were just "eh"...

But this is beyond frustrating because this team has as much, if not more talent then any other team and they are more talented than the team they fielded last year.

Better defense, better goaltending, more offensive talent.

The fact that they can't put it all together is incredibly frustrating!

Lay off Katie. All media will be delayed. The team had a players only meeting after the game and kept the media out longer than they are used too.
They may not even get a crack at the locker room today.

Erskine was HORRIBLE today. Anyone with anyone hockey knowledge whatsoever would recognize that.

hey we need to round up about 3000 Egyptians and have them surround the VC next game and not allow anyone in. Then Ted might sit up and realize that his "product" is sinking faster than the Titanic.

@tmac,

Leonsis may do something if he sees the bottom line affected negatively. That probably will not occur by next week. If I were you I would give up on this season then, if they do anything, you will be pleasantly surprised. Please try to relax, start by not calling people names.

What's the over/under on Semin's next goal? I'm gonna set the line at the World Championship.

I'm taking the over.

@cstanton,

I like Beagle too. If BB keeps playing Semin, someone other than Beagle should sit.

True, but I thought Erskine was even worse. I don't he even made a half decent play all game today much a decent play.

@dglelite

? I said that if people start stating ultimatum's such as "Fire BB or I will do X" that that is an empty threat. If your goal is to sincerely invoke change, then stop being a customer. If enough people stop being customers then a business will change the way in which it runs its organization.

If you want to complain just to complain because it makes you feel better, that is fine. Just don't expect it to accomplish anything.

Ted Leonsis- We are trying to build so that we win this year and ten years from...........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

GMGM- I would make a trade if someone out there was better than................ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

BB- I don't know what else I can do to...................ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Players- We need to work harder, go to the net more, sacrifice the body...........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

How about if nothing is done by the trade deadline then everybody just leaves the next game after the 2nd intermission. That would send Ted a message.

Erskine was especially god awful today too.

Posted by: underpants2 | February 12, 2011 3:40 PM | Report abuse

In all fairness it may have something to do with his concussion but I don't think Mike Green was all that great today.

Posted by: croftonpost | February 12, 2011 3:41 PM | Report abuse

I've always liked Beagle also and would prefer him playing over Bradley(I like Bradley but Bealge offers more now, especially with Hendricks taking over Bradley's role) or DJK.

Team chemistry is important, which is a potential risk of making major trades during the season.

However, the team wasn't exactly lighting it up with Semin gone so I think it is worth the risk to try to integrate Semin back with the team. However, 1 goal in two games is pretty horrible. But the team desperately needs somebody other than the top line(which Semin was on today) to create a scoring chance. Laich looked good in the 1st period but I don't even remember him doing anything since the 1st. Knuble didn't do anything. Chimera did 0. MP didn't do anything. I thought MJ played okay. Hendricks played okay also.

I actually thought Ovie played a decent game today. He scored a goal, created about 3 or 4 more good chances to score, didn't make any turnovers that led to breaks the other way, and was in very deep in the defensive zone playing solid D.

Posted by: sgm3 | February 12, 2011 3:46 PM | Report abuse

The only current Caps player who should even be ALLOWED to open his mouth and give a quote like "we need to come out and play harder" is Matt Hendricks.

He actually backs up his words.

The rest of the postgame quoters - Ovy, Backs, Semin, Laich, Green, Hannan etc should all keep their mouths shut and just play.

I included Semin in there because I read a painful interview of his recently where he said something about how the team needs to play. Just shut it dude. No one wants to hear it. He made 2 or 3 real stupid turnovers today trying to overhandle that puck. Please don't ever ever compare him to Pavel Datsyuk. Its not even close.

hot goalie, one bad period - what are gonna do

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

hehe, you're a naughty one Kirk

I will go out on a limb and predict 4 bad games for the Caps in the 1st round.

no actually, this type of adversity is good. The road trip should provide some type of bonding experience. Bruce better hope so anyway otherwise his job situation got a little more tenuous. Not that he'll get canned before the season's over.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 12, 2011 3:54 PM | Report abuse

I will say it again - there is no assurance that the Caps make the playoffs this year.

Posted by: zmega | February 12, 2011 3:57 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1

If Semin or any other player is asked a question by a reporter and they answer it, I'm not going to get up in arms about it. Answering questions from the media is part of their duty.

Posted by: sgm3 | February 12, 2011 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Boudreau just said "ice time is the next thing" when he was asked what options he has motivationally as a coach.

This deep into a season full of listless, lifeless performances, he's just now giving even lip service to what should be the basic motivational tool for any hockey coach, i.e.: you don't put for the effort, you sit the bench and I'll play someone who does -- no matter who you are. This guy is clueless.

Players-only meeting after the game today. This team obviously has no real leaders, so it's hard to imagine who's talking or even what's being said.

My guess is that is was led by Knuble. He is the only true veteran leader the Caps have.

Too bad we can't play the Kings or similar teams more often. I think thats about the only way this team will learn how to play at a certain level consistently.

I have always thought the Caps could've used another veteran leader on their team (I was for getting Madden in the off-season to be a 3rd or 4th liner center).

I think the lack of veteran leadership is a flaw on the team. But pointing out flaws is not a slam on GMGM. Every team in the NHL has flaws.

that is your uplifting news of the day. Now go on about your way.

First, entering my one game a year Kings fan mode: Go Kings Go! What a great all-around effort by a clearly superior club.

And, back to Caps fan mode. What a listless game. While I like the outcome, the goal by Kopitar and the goal by Handzus were the reuslt of no one clearing the front. I sit right behind the net, and Handzus had about 8 whiffs before he hit the lay-up. Caps need a body on him.

The stadium seemed less than it usual energy (maybe the early start), and just a general malaise about the game after Ovis goal until the Kings tied it up. The Kings turned it on then and the Caps didn't step up. Can't figure it out. Maybe the pre-trip meeting will help.

I'm hoping for solid Caps efforts in AZ and Orange County. (And, ahem, Go Kings Go!)

? Every team has flaws, you could do the same for each and every team. It wouldn't be SLAMMING the GM, just pointing out the weakness in the team. I feel the Caps need to get more veteran leadership.

Posted by: sgm3 | February 12, 2011 4:17 PM | Report abuse

McPhee sucks!

Boudreau sucks!

Leonsis sucks if his fat ass doesn't do something now.

It's not even about this season. We are winning nada this year. M'er F'n book that!

It's about sending a message and getting started on a new path.

McPhee will not be able to swing the multiple deals that need to be made to get this team even close to where it needs to be.

And Boudreau is a joke of an NHL coach. His success was fool's gold in the truest sense. His junky brand of hockey got seen through and exploited and he has no ability to adjust because well, that crap is all he knows.

He's out of his element in this team defense concept. He doesn't truly believe in it and that is a big problem that the players can sense.

McPhee probably went off the handle the other day because he saw evidence that Boudreau was going back to his "it only works in the AHL" brand of hockey.

Change is needed now to get a head start on next season.

What a joke the last couple of years have been. The reg. results were complete fool's gold. It's plain as day obvious why we became the first team ever to lose Gm 7s at home in 3 consecutive years.

Clueless GM and lousy coach hired by clueless GM.

There needs to be a roster overhaul this offseason and the crappy hockey they've learned under Boudreau needs to be completely unlearned. Get the right GM and coach in here and build a more balanced roster and teach this team how to play NHL-caliber hockey.

F'n pathetic.

Y'all though we were moving forward. You were fooled.

We've been deceptively moving backward because of the limitations of that crappy one-way run 'n gun hockey.

We've been playing smarter the past 2 months or so but Boudreau doesn't believe in this and he doesn't know how to build upon it.

Fire McPhee!

Fire Boudreau!

Wake up Fat Man!

If there is really a players only meeting, I'm not surprised.

I'm always negative but I've never gone off the handle like I did today. I felt something awfully stank going on in that game.

This team is dead and change needs to be made f'n immediately.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 12, 2011 4:25 PM | Report abuse

BB has no clue on how to right the ship...one month can be an anomaly, two months is a trend, three months is an alarm. The fact is the Caps are one of a dozen so-so teams right now with no indication of new direction.

Time to make a change.

Posted by: bill_in_damascus | February 12, 2011 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Laich used to be one of my favorite players, but he has been a non factor most of the year. He talks a good game, but doesn't back it up on the ice.

I think Green when he was paired with Hannan after they got a few game under them.

Schultz looked like the guy that shows up in the playoffs. Slow, uninspired, and letting guys whack at the puck 3 times in the crease. I can't believe how soft this guy is.

Players I hope are traded by the deadline:
Semin
Gordon
Chimera
Schultz

I would even trade Alzner if the right deal came along. I'm still waiting for him to play more physical this year like he stated.

Too many of our players are either in the same mold or are one dimensional.

Chimera has the speed but can't finish. He should go play on a line with Todd Krygier and Mike Grier.

Posted by: StanleyCap | February 12, 2011 4:31 PM | Report abuse

Honestly I don't understand why people are criticizing McPhee. He's really done a fantastic job and whoever doesn't see that is blind.

Honestly, I think a coaching change is needed. Judging by Boudreau's reactions over the past couple weeks, I think he knows that he's on the hot seat. I like Boudreau, but his coaching has become stale and now it's time for a change. My guess is that McPhee is searching for potential candidates and will make a change in the next few weeks or so.

I think the player we need is Tim Connolly. He's a UFA next season, he's great on the power play and an experienced second line center. He fits the bill perfectly.

Posted by: blueblonde | February 12, 2011 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and nothing will come out of that players only meeting... nothing lasting for sure.

There are deep rooted problems that won't begin to be addressed until there are changes up top.

Just like Schultz will never be anything resembling a tough, hard-nosed hockey player, McPhee will never be anything resembling a competent GM. He can only trick Leonsis and the kool-aid drinkers for so long and his time is running out. That's something to hold onto if you're looking for a bright spot.

Tick tock... tick tock.... tick tock...

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 12, 2011 4:45 PM | Report abuse

I paid $200+ for tix to the Sharks game. I don't think I want to do that again until I am convinced this team has found it's stride and built a strong identity. BB should have been gone in the post season - but he stayed on the strength of the President's trophy and regular season winning record. McPhee should have made a trade last Feb to get more D, but he did not. This team as it is right now is not going anywhere in the playoffs. So McPhee may as well start trading. We have some ineffective players that need to be sold and some gaps that need to be filled. I strongly believe we need a change in Captaincy. I do not think Ovi makes a great captain. Green, Knuble.....anyone else. I'm almost close to believing Ovi is a Kovalchuk sized liability now.

I live on the left coast so, most of the games are @ 4:00 here. That gives me some daylight while the dumb-ass Caps are playing. I was going to make a trip to LA for the game there but, no thank you. Too bad they already have my money for the NHL season package. Too bad I can't hurt the owner in the pocket.

The Caps have some easy problems.
1. The GM doesn't get the right type of players.
2. The coach doesn't have a clue how to run a defensive system & tries to bullcrap his why thru it.
3. The coach is soft & the team reflects the coach.
4. The players are confused in this "system" & are reacting instead of acting.
5. The players can't win playing BB's "I'm not sure how to play defense & score but, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night so, this should work" system & they are "tuning out" the coach.

It's going to take a few days to following the Caps & to stop posting. A few more losses will do the trick. I'm betting BB the the boys will help me with that.
