Tonight's lineup: Lightning at Caps

By Katie Carrera

Semyon Varlamov will make his second start in as many games and third of the season tonight against Tampa Bay, which will go with Mike Smith, who is 0-5-0 with a 4.72 goals-against average and .850 save percentage in six starts against the Capitals in his career.

With the return of Mike Knuble, Tomas Fleischmann is out against the Lightning. Alex Ovechkin will at least start another game on right-wing, once again with Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich on the first line. Meanwhile, Alexander Semin will play on the left side of the second line with Marcus Johansson and Knuble.

Based on warm up here's what the lineup should look like:

Forwards
Laich-Backstrom-Ovechkin
Semin-Johansson-Knuble
Chimera-Gordon-Fehr
Hendricks-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Schultz-Poti
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Fahey

Goal
Varlamov
Neuvirth

Scratches: Tomas Fleischmann, Mike Green, D.J. King.

Go Caps!!

Finally, Bruce getting creative! I liked the results with Ovie on RW last game, and I've long advocated getting Semin back to LW where he scored 38 a few yrs back (I just think the left side gives him a better angle for that wicked wrister). As for Ovie, if a big part of his game is going to be barreling up the wing, makes sense to have him on the right side so he can protect the puck better.

I suppose that if you keep on hammering a square peg into a round hole, the peg eventually becomes round and it will fit. LOL. That seems to BB philosiphy with his lines. I hope he succeeds because he isn't changed his views.

Posted by: hock1 | November 26, 2010 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Yup...obviously flash has BB wrapped around his finger!

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 4:58 PM | Report abuse

King scratched again... What's the over under on how much blood Bradley will lose tonight?

Posted by: FLDave | November 26, 2010 4:59 PM | Report abuse

But when a team only has one first pair D man, and that player is hurt, you can see our chances are lessened.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 26, 2010 4:47 PM

fahey is a stud when he's not scoring on his own goalie!!!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 26, 2010 5:00 PM | Report abuse

When King played with the St. Louis Blues prior to his injury he was a hard skating, hard checking, exceptional fighter of a player that was well liked by his teammates. He has barely played for the Caps giving him no time to adapt and build chemistry with his new team. I hope BB starts playing King so he can show his stuff the Caps fans. He was favorite in St. Louis and he can be the same here.

he's a hero

Ovechkin with yet another decision in the o-zone that led to an oddman rush the other way.

I think that's about the 5th in just the last 2 games.

He has to read the play better and be more defensively aware.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 5:28 PM | Report abuse

Really Alzner?

You need to throw a block for Backs in the final seconds of the period?

Now they have the chance to steal our MO at the outset of the next period, that sucks.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Great double kill!

The next PP WILL be ours!

....LEAD PADDED! LAICH!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Actually it looks like Erskine has his CAREER HIGH IN GOALS!

I have always said, if you just give the Lumberjack ice time, HE WILL SCORE!

wtf:
i'm trying to follow on-online (no video streaming) - are the caps carrying the play? the play-by-play and stats would seem to indicate that they are.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 26, 2010 6:22 PM | Report abuse

if semin can get 4 more - he can catch stamkos today

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 26, 2010 6:25 PM | Report abuse

oh they are definitely having an excellent game Capt.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Simply put, Semin and the Caps are on fire tonight.

Posted by: Terptwin | November 26, 2010 6:26 PM | Report abuse

I was hoping we would come out strong in this game.

Its another STATEMENT game, we have a CHOKE HOLD on this division.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Let's see if they can play simple and smart here on in. Dump pucks in and make sure you're in good positioning.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 6:40 PM | Report abuse

what's the score?

Posted by: JMinVA | November 26, 2010 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Is the game on radio or live streaming video?

Posted by: JMinVA | November 26, 2010 6:42 PM | Report abuse

i hope semin can get another hattie in the third - that would be awesome

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 26, 2010 6:44 PM | Report abuse

5:0, streaming on ATDHE, really nice game in the 2nd period

Posted by: enrinat | November 26, 2010 6:46 PM | Report abuse

5-0 CAPS

Semin with the natural hat trick from simply lovely plays.

24-11 SOGs CAPS

Excellent PK, including 5-3 for a min plus kill.

Varly sharp in limited action.

majo, ovie, backs...2 helpers each

Great thru 2 periods.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 6:47 PM | Report abuse

When did we trade Ovie for H. Sedin? Ovie's passing is much improved this year.

Posted by: chriscaps | November 26, 2010 6:50 PM | Report abuse

oh and 2 for 4 on the pp

and stamkos has 1 SOG thru 15 plus minutes of ice time.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Well, every player tonight brought his "A" game. Not one mistake, really. Gotta love the way Semin has aped the Stamkos style for all three goals.

I have knocked BB at times but credit where due - moving Ovi to RW and Semin to LW definitely creative.

Seriously, Fahey is better than Sloan.

On the other thread I put that we'd be severly weakened at D. We still can't win 16 in April with two rookies in top 4 D, but they are both on a fine improvement curve. They surely will be a top pair in two years and Alzner-Carlson can anchor the team for 10-15 years along with Green-Schultz. Maybe Orlov and one other and you are good to go.

As for Johansson, if he keeps it up, you still need a C for the playoffs, but maybe a Madden type C rather than an expensive 2nd liner. We'll see.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 26, 2010 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Fahey HAS DEFINITELY looked better than Sloan.

Mostly by not getting noticed...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

Our top line gives up an oddman rush seconds into the 3rd period. I think it was on Backstrom this time.

I understand the score of this game but those are bad habits that bite you when it matters. Recognize the game situation.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

TB came into this game with the 3rd ranked PK in the league.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

why hasn't semin scored again yet!!!!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 26, 2010 7:11 PM | Report abuse

The smarter play by Backstrom or Ovechkin would be to dump the puck in there.

Instead, they get fancy and end up taking a penalty on TB's transition.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Alzner took a couple of bad penalties but he's also made a lot of good plays. I've seen him rub Stamkos alone off the puck along the boards multiple times.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

and there is your 60 minutes of hockey

OUTSTANDING

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Semin gets a hattie, Varly gets a shutout, and, therefore, Stamkos goes scoreless.

Posted by: Terptwin | November 26, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Solid game.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 7:37 PM | Report abuse

dvr'd the game - can't wait to watch it tomorrow.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 26, 2010 7:38 PM | Report abuse

And even though TB didn't play well tonight independently from our efforts, the level of puck possession was pretty impressive, esp. when you consider that Green wasn't in the lineup.

We've been characterized as a puck possession team in the past which I never really thought was an accurate description given how much time we tend to spend in our own end and how short lived a lot of our offensive rushes are but this game was a different story.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

@ tmac2yao
reading through all the posts...why so negative? It was a full 60 min. game with TB getting under 20 SOG. We went 50% on the PP against a team with a great PK and our own PK looked awesome against a top 4 PP team! Just be happy!

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

@ tmac2yao

lol...and of course your next post makes my point moot.

Question:

how can Ovie have 2 assists but only be a +1?

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

capscoach,

assisting on the pp doesn't change +/-

Posted by: Steve_R | November 26, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

the +1 means he was on the ice for 1 goal for, even strength or short handed.

its not related to points.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Ahhhhhhhh, capscoach...

Caps win, 6-0, so obviously nobody got any negatives. But, you only get a + for goals scored when your team is ES or on PK. Any goals Caps scored on PP they don't get +. Not remembering every play in the game, you can simply tell Ovechkin was on the ice for one ES goal by Caps and you can't tell from +/- how many on PP.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 26, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

@wtf_e_fehr

yea, but if u have two assists, it means u were on the ice for at least two goals :)

I didn't know that PP goals didn't count

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

thanks for the clarification everyone! you learn something new every day! :)

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Man, ATL is playing some good hockey recently.

38-17 in shots and up 3-0 through 2 pds against MTL.

Perhaps better off without Kovalchuk.

Instead of overpaying one player, get a few real solid role players. They made a lot of solid small moves this offseason and do have some young talent.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 26, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

one more question then:

I would assume then that if PP goals don't count as a plus then PK GA don't count as a minus?

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Well gang,

It looks like I called it right for the lineup of the first two lines. Of course, I had no idea who was going to be the "healthy" scratch among our 3rd & 4th liners. Earlier today, I just couldn't remember think of Chimmer who ended up in his normal slot at 3LW. (I was thinking of the Flash/Gordon/Fehr line and making my usual beating Ming of Mongo comments.)

And, BTW, SeminAllOverTheIce did a great job of predicting a Caps win (and great things for Sasha and Ovi).

Posted by: capscoach | November 26, 2010 9:09 PM

Just as a point of clarification.

Consider a Dman who skates up ice near the bench (EV or PK situation), makes a pass, goes off for a change.

Its possible for him to get an assist on a goal scored while he is on the bench.

Therefore he would have an assist, and not have a +.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 26, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

tmac: ATL had a better record last year after they traded Kovy to NJ and got Bergfors, Oduya and I can't remember what else. On top of that, with all the money they saved, they were able to get all those ex-Hawks. The luckiest day in the life of any Thrash fan was the day Kovy said "Nyet" to the 12-yr $101M offer.

-----------------------------

I thought it was a mistake to move Big Buff to D full-time but he's turning out to be quite an offensive D-man... 20 pts in 22 games.

And he's still 6'3, 250 plus and can skate.

Posted by: joek443 | November 26, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Bears win big tonight at Syracuse, 5-1. Goals by A.Gordon(2), Perreault, Joudrey and Greentree. Sabourin in net.

Posted by: tess2201 | November 26, 2010 10:02 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

I think you're right on it being the luckiest day for the Atlanta franchise.

But, if I were Kovy, I'd feel like I was snakebit in the decision making department. Leave a perennial losing team, get traded to a consistent winner, and then the winner becomes a loser and vice versa.
