I don't buy Bruce's reason for Neuvy getting the start. I don't know why; just seems a little fishy. But I'm probably just making something out of nothing...

I feel your guys pain. I really do.
I had to drive through rain just now coming back from the beach.
I've got some leftover steamed crabs for appetizers then it's rocking the red with lamb stew and cab for the game.

I'll be pounding the mac-and-cheese while looking out the window at my minivan in the driveway rapidly disapearing under a small mountain of snow. There must be a rule against posts like this somewhere in the WP's standards and policies . . .

Agreed elicea. I think we all know BB doesn't want to throw a rookie making his debut in there with a 12 game win streak on the line.

He's not going to come out and say "We didn't start Holtby because he's too raw and inexperienced and we don't trust him to keep the streak going," but I'm betting that's more like the real reason. I just hope we're not rushing Neuvirth back too soon from his injury.

Tarik, can you ask Greenie how his Lambo handles in the snow...

Tom...just not feelin' the sincerity there. I decided that I was going to spend this weekend making soups (made a pretty decent chicken and veg soup today) and drinking beer (but not necessarily in that order).
I also hung out a white flag to mother nature, but I can't seem to see it anymore. I think I speak for the majority when I say: ENOUGH WITH THE SNOW ALREADY!

@tominfl: Steak and a baked potato here. I went to the beach today also...... in the dream I had while napping earlier.

@rbpalmer
Yes, Bruce is superstitious. Oddly enough, when Hershey was on their streak, guess who was in goal most of the time? None other than Braden Holtby.

A poster on Japers got the twitter message that National Airport has cancelled flights through Saturday.

TimDz: If you think a little snow is bad (I've lived through 5 or 6 two footers in the past), you should try the time we had three hurricanes come through Central FL in a span of about six weeks. Power knocked out with all three (2004). "Enough already" on snow that will end in 8 hrs. In one hurricane, we had 60+ mph winds here for like 48 hrs straight. I think that was Frances, which moved across the state at 2 mph.
Good luck though and hope Ma Nature clanks it off the pipe and it isn't so bad.

Lemaire said Kovalchuk won’t have to change much to fit into the Devils’ style of play.
“Maybe one thing, only one thing,” he said. “Just when he gets in our end, he will have to stop. That’s all. The rest he can do anything he wants.”
Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2010 6:39 PM | Report abuse
Holtby was drafted in 2008. He's two years younger than Neuvy and varly and those two are kids. Holtby is a few months removed from JRs, with only a handful of AHL games under his belt.
It's very unlikely he's ready to go. Varly had a Russian championship series he'd played in plus WJC. Neuvy has a full year of AHL plus Calder Cup. Going back to Neuvy is a reasonable move.

Tom: Gotcha...My "enough already" is clearly out of frustration and the angst associated with having to shovel out of my townhouse and try to find a place to put the snow pile...
Clearly no comparison to having to deal with high winds and stuff flying around with enough inertia to take your head off. I'll have a Yuengling tonight in your honor (two if it will make you feel better..)
Posted by: TimDz | February 5, 2010 6:42 PM | Report abuse
TimDz: I was joking if not clear. I'm not making light of the snow, it's a bad thing to deal with and we've lost relatives in bad weather storms.
But, as long as you don't lose power (like when Quebec got hit with ice storm), you should be OK.
The same front actually went through here which is why we had high winds and rain this pm, plus some tornado warnings. My daughter works at Disney and they had a tornado warning on the radio as I was coming home. All this is due to the long-running El Nino, including the no hurricanes of last summer and the powerful "pineapple express" low pressure storms causing the mudslides in Southern CA a few weeks back.
I remember living up there the worst storms were always those coming up from Richmond, never those coming from the NW. That Gulf air packs a wallop.

Boy, how good are things in Caps land if all we have to argue about is the weather?!? ;-)

~Sigh~ If only that was possible with the Redskins.

We're tied. At least we're drawing penalties and starting to look a little better although everything we shoot seems to be getting stopped.
Keep shooting, guys. We'll wear down Pavelec at some point.

Song for today. The Devils should play "Eli's Coming" in their park in honor of Kovalchuk. The name Ilya is the Russian equivalent of Eli.

Everyone still like Flash at Center?
Posted by: floms | February 5, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse
Okay Caps, please hold on and win!
And may everyone at the game drive safely. The weather forecast has become more dire. 8-12 inches before midnight. About 2 feet at dawn. They're talking about breaking records. (Okay, I've heard record breaking for plenty of snows in my lifetime.)
Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 5, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse
Flash has great vision and passing skills but my biggest concerns are his backchecking and ability to win battles along the boards. It's like night and day at this point compared to Backstrom. I hear the faceoff concerns but I'm less concerned about that than the things mentioned above.

Atlanta outshooting and outchancing us through 2 periods. I understand we're on a back-to-back but this has been an ongoing issue for quite a while now.

I have a feeling McPhee is going to pull a deal at some point next week despite the recent success (at least in terms of results).
Posted by: tmac2yao | February 5, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse
Atlanta feels it has a good chance of winning. The Caps should empty the tank this next period.

Nuthin' to worry. We always go to work in the 3rd.

No Backstrom...

What did I say? Goin' to work, Alex Semin goin' to work.
Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | February 5, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse
Nice 2-on-1 execution...
People talk about how this team keeps winning without Ovechkin, Green, Semin, various goalies, etc...
One thing we've never seen is this team without Backstrom for an extended period of time. He's by far our best two-way player and arguably or most valuable player.
Let's just hope it's another migraine issue...

Earlier in the season, Caps were unstoppable in the first period and sucked in the third... Oh how things have switched around.

I don't blame Semin so much for knocking the puck in on the backcheck.
It was the risky and unnecessary pass that was borderline inexcusable.
A PP with a 3 goal lead and only a handful of minutes remaining...
Make. The. Safe. Play.

Another 40+ shots against with plenty of good scoring opportunities.
We're turning into the Canadiens.
