SLOAN BETTER PLAY HIS BUTT OFF!!!

He will, don't worry...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:02 PM | Report abuse

He will.

Crush Sydney

Posted by: chavez66 | May 4, 2009 7:05 PM | Report abuse

I guess Sloan was a good choice but I would have liked to see Alzner respond well and belie his youth ala Semy V. Can we add that to his list of nicknames? LETS GO CAPITALS!

Posted by: mjwies11 | May 4, 2009 7:05 PM | Report abuse

Also in case anyone is wondering why I'm not at the game, I have a bit of a stomach bug. :\

Hurray for the wonders of modern technology... Versus is carrying the game in the US (all of it, even here in-market), CBC is carrying it in Canada, and RDS is carrying it in French-speaking Canada.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Damn, I thought Comcast was picking up the Versus feed, and I don't have Versus. This sux, since every game is on Versus now. Who gets Versus anyway?!

Posted by: JamWhitt | May 4, 2009 7:07 PM | Report abuse

JamWhitt, a whole lot of people get Versus. Of the major providers in Annapolis, all of them offer it, and most of that is in the basic tier. It's not the backwater channel it used to be. And Versus is carrying Game 2 and Game 3 nationwide, exclusively. Games 4-7 (if necessary) are available on Comcast Sportsnet in this area and Versus outside the area (similar to Round 1). *ALL* of Round 3 is on Versus, and also Games 3-4 of the Finals.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:10 PM | Report abuse

...that said, Versus managed to misspell Fedorov's name as "Federov". Awesome.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:12 PM | Report abuse

Bummer. It's extra on DishNetwork, which I have. I had a free preview a few months back, and if it wasn't for hockey, that station would have nothing. Rodeo? Fishing? Yeesh. Guess I gotta pony up or shut up.

Posted by: JamWhitt | May 4, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

It seems as though DishNetwork and RCN are the two local providers that don't offer it in the basic package.

And yeah, I don't find myself watching it for much other than hockey. But it does have a pretty decent sports show called "Sports Soup" that comes on after hockey sometimes. :) Their past attempts at mixing comedy and sports were awful at best, but this one is a winner. And if you're into IndyCar racing, they have that now too. (Not for me, but to each their own!)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and Versus has boxing and MMA now too. Forgot about that.

Honk honk honk... Let's go Caps!

I feel your pain, Greg. I too would be there, but am dealing with bronchitis and already am wiped out. Getting home late and then up early would be draining.

Semin smacks around Orpik, and Orpik responds, but somehow the Penwhines get the PP? Looks like this game is more of the same already.

1-0 Penwhines. Crysby scores.

Posted by: Chase4 | May 4, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Thats twice now that sid the kid has treated Mikey green as his beyaatch, first on the hit that sent him careening and then on the goal. WT F was Green thinking on that goal? COVER your man you maroon!

Posted by: maven1918 | May 4, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and I can confirm that there are Caps fans in my seats. All season, there has only been Caps fans in my seats.

Time for a Caps PPG!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

I don't think we've solved the turnover problem from last game.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 4, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

too much stickhandling and not enough straight ahead

agree that Mike Green has been putrid so far. I count 5 plays so far where he's lost a one on one battle.

Give the Pens credit, they're playing as a team, Caps are playing pretty well but you have Semin and Green playing with their heads up their you know what

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

I sucked it up and just upgraded to the next package on DishNetwork. $13 extra per month (50 more channels). Let's hope the Caps make it a worthwhile investment. ;-)

Chris Clark, WTF? Bad move.

Posted by: sasha_206 | May 4, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 4, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

smart play by the Pen to draw the penalty on Clark. After Guerin got whistled for the slash a Pen player skated real aggressively towards Clark and he got his elbow up instinctively.

we should maybe think about drawing penalties when we're whistled for one

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

I HATE this play by play announcer. Is that Emrick? He's terrible.

On Cox service Versus is 735, up in the HD channels. I'm glad I get it, as I don't have any Tiers, just adv. basic or whatever.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 4, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Huuuuuuuuuuuuge kill by the Caps to end the 1st! Here's to a stronger 2nd period, and let's stay out of the box!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Early on they kept the puck near the Penguin's net but looked oddly defensive doing it. A lot of board crushing with no offensive rhythm.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 4, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

sasha: Yup, it's Emrick. I like the excitement he brings to the game, but not EVERYTHING is as exciting as he makes it out to be. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Good action by both team, entertaining 1st pd

I'd say the only players who really didn't come to play hard in the 1st were Green, Semin, Backstrom. The rest of the team really battled and matched the Penguins intensity. Semin finally woke up a bit after Orpik went after him. When will teams learn that the worst thing they can do is to take runs at Semin, that just wakes him up and makes him play harder. If they just leave him alone he'll go half-speed most of the night.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

he's just lazing around on his barcalounger

That's certainly how it seems. The only time I have noticed him is when he screws up. That hasn't been all that much i suppose, but I had been hoping for more offensive support...

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 4, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Emrick is so dumb he had to ask if Jurcina's game was really to be physical. Its like he's never heard of him or watched him before this series. way to go Em!

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

I'll be happy if green just plays defense. He's totally responsible for that 1st goal. He let Crosby just hang out for that rebound.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Green looks freaking asleep. Did he just wake up one day before the playoffs started and decide to phone it in?

Posted by: snakegriffin | May 4, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

ov averaging 1:11 per shift...too long

Posted by: wendel2 | May 4, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Semin has to calm down his inner diva. He must lead the league in unnecessary retaliatory penalties.

Green has been terrible. Do they cast votes for the Norris trophy before or after the playoffs?

Varly is sublime.

Posted by: sasha_206 | May 4, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching it with a slight delay. Call it the "Tivo effect". But yah Varlimov made a couple great saves in a row, near the end of the 1st. Wasn't it 5 on 3? Point blank on Crosby with his left foot. What the heck is Crosby doing crowding the net? I think Laich specializes in that buying time near the net with teeth.

The second save on Gonchar was impressive. Mid split (can't do that), leaned forward like in a push up, he reached up and back (again can't do that either I have normal human flexibility).

Kirk: It's Andre, not Anthony.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Sweet start to the second. Smooth transition, aggressive offensively and Ove's shot was well placed. That looks more like Caps hockey.
The first they looked like the Rangers.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 4, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Caps have taken the lead in shots on goal.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 4, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Awfully nice when a team has to assure a home crowd by only allowing those with drivers licenses from DC, VA, and MD. That's ok, c'mon up to Pittsburgh, we'll welcome you up to the Igloo with open arms and allow you to wear your red, white and blue jersies. What are you afraid of? A bunch of Black and Gold frenzied fans going wild and taking over half of your stadium? We don't require PA driver's licenses to purchase tickets to our games, we admit everyone.

Posted by: sherrieosterman | May 4, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Not driver's licenses, zip codes. Lots of professional sports teams do that for these occasions, I believe.

Posted by: snakegriffin | May 4, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: sherrieosterman | May 4, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: snakegriffin | May 4, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

@sherrie
I've lived in PA my whole life and have been a die-hard Caps fan for 25 years. If I would have tried to buy tickets through Ticketmaster I would have been blocked because of my zip code. And you know what? I'm perfectly OK with that. That's why it's call HOME ICE advantage. GO CAPS!

Ted can do what he wants. The days where you take over half of VC are OVER. Even without the geo requirement. There have been scattered singles available to non-STH's through the 6 games at VC so far. That is NOT going to relate to penguin scum taking over half the building. Keep showing your ignorance.

Posted by: Chase4 | May 4, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov is absolutely on fire. We'll turn this game around.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 4, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Varly is doing what he can...

Posted by: seanjo93 | May 4, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

The Caps' defense better get their heads out of their lower orifices if they want to win this game and go up 2-0 in the series. Varly is fun to watch, but let's give him some help at least.

Posted by: benjammin | May 4, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Pens are now dominating the Caps in every aspect. This score could easily be 6-1 right now, our goalie has been magnificent.

Man I hope Mike Green pulls a hammy, I'd rather see Alzner in there at this point. Every time Green takes the ice he gives up the puck now.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Crud. Crosby again.

What's the deal? That is 3 point blank shots by Crosby because he's camping out next to the goal. He should be a bloody pulp (to the disdain of H.S. girls across the country).

anyone see that after we scored to tie it up, i mean the very next shift, Green again turns the puck over at the blueline and we get running around trying to get it out. I don't think I've seen one player have a worse game in the playoffs.

We can't keep playing like this. Varlamov is the only reason we're tied. 5-6 absolutely unbelievable saves. Deflections in front, cross passes, rebounds... the kid's amazing! We gotta help him out though. Most of the game is in our zone.

Posted by: ranndino | May 4, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | May 4, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

no doubt no doubt.
The first goal was because Crosby was left all alone by Green who had no positioning at all. Someone else mentioned that Green had his clock cleaned on a hit by Crosby earlier, maybe he was still thinking about that hit.

The 2nd goal was all Green. He makes a poor clear and then compounds the problem by once again failing to cover his man in the crease.

Then after we score to tie it up, Green again makes a poor clear and we're stuck in our own end. He's also made other turnovers or failed to hold the puck in tonight.

I've bagged on Green before, but this is brutal tonight. He's about as bad as I've seen anyone play. He's made about 10 bad plays in this game and one good one where he bodied Talbot off the puck at the end of the 2nd on our PP.

This series so far is like round 1 except we're impersonating the Rangers with Varlamov as Lundqvist. Wake the #@@##& up!!! We're not playing a pee wee club here. Pens are a great team and they're doing whatever the hell they want in our zone. Varly is every bit as athletic as Tim Thomas and that's a huge compliment.

Double save in the first, kick and then glove.

Two saves on deflections right in front.

Kicking that pad out when he had no stick on a point blank chance.

2 saves going post to post in like .00001 of a second.

He's been incredible! No dufus can say that he hasn't been tested after this game. Our D is giving him every chance to shine.

I never thought I'd say that, but we miss Erskine big time. When Crosby of all people is allowed to just camp out in front of our net and put rebounds in without even being breathed on things are not good. I don't care if we have to take a penalty there. Bulldoze him out of there!

* many posters here will wonder what is wrong with Ovi
* Ovi will get a hat trick
* backstrom will score an Ovi like highlight goal

brutal xcheck to our goalies face by Kunitz, he did get the job done though, they scored again with Green getting outmuscled up close. We gotta protect our goalie and our crease a lot better, great win tho!

Will the hack Kunitz get suspended for the cross check? He should! That's a bunch of crap. Can't be allowed. The NHL will mess this one up like they did in the Game 1 hit Detroit vs. Anaheim.

Wow, what a game. Glad we came out on top!

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 4, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Kunitz has got something coming to him. Near the end of the regular season he gave Green a two-handed slash(unnoticed) and then this cross-check to Varly's head.

I used to enjoy his play, but seeing him more regularly here in the EC, he's a dirty B%&$h.

Posted by: AyresGoober | May 4, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Refs gotta see that crosscheck to the goalie's head. Awful play. And letting Crosby get a hat trick leaves a terrible taste in my mouth, especially since Poti had a couple of opportunities to knock the thing to the corner. But can't complain about a 2-0 series lead.

Posted by: CDon | May 4, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Crosby dominated this game, too bad the Penguins lost. Crosby was better than Ovechkin all night.

Posted by: SC87 | May 4, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Wow, heart attack city. What a game! Ovechkin and Varly with monster efforts! We had no business being in this game if not for Varly.

I'm incensed by what Kunitz did just vefore Crosby scored his 3rd. A blatant attempt to injure Varly with a full force cross check to his head! I can understand the refs missing it because all hell was breaking loose, but I really hope the NHL takes a look at that play. If that wasn't a gross attempt to injure, a head shot, plus goalie interference I don't know what is! That POS Kunitz should be suspended for this garbage!

Cross check to Varly's head goes uncalled.

Awesome.

@SC87

Give me a break. Crosby played well, but OV matched him. And the team that won deserved to win this thing.

Posted by: CDon | May 4, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Well I feel so fortunate that we , the underdogs of this series , lead it 2-0. I say we are the underdogs because I haven't heard of a hockey pundit (or non Caps fan)yet who gave the Caps a chance. I take that back there was one Flyer fan I heard on Scott Loughlin's show who said we could take it.

Anyway it's onto Pittsburgh now, where it will get much tougher. C'mon Semin and Green.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 4, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Kunitz is going to turn into Sean Avery without the talent. Loser.

Posted by: CDon | May 4, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

OV just said he didn't want to talk about Varly...afraid to jinx him...

Posted by: TimDz | May 4, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

SC87:
i guess the other series didn't help the pens tonight. twice the caps were outplayed and came away with the win. pens must feel like the caps did against the nyr. another performance like this one in pitt - and the series will be 2-1. caps have a lot of work to do between now and wed.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | May 4, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Just to put it out there... I predicted that the series will end in 5 depending on the victor of game 2. I still stand with that decision, and say CAPS IN 5!

Posted by: 4RBears | May 4, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Our star players are better then their stars players, our goalie is better then their goalie, our fans are better then their fans, our owner is better then their owner......nany nany boo boo.

In all seriousness the next win will be harder than the previous two. We need a better effort on the road.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | May 4, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Caps in 5? They're not going win a single game in Pittsburgh.

Anyone see Sindy's "playoff beard?" Isn't it cute?

Posted by: TimDz | May 4, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

I think Green head butted that last one in for Crosby. Don't mind Jurcina's penalties just wish they were earlier in the game. Hope Sydney has the name brand of the stick imprinted on his back.

What's legal anyways? Can you shove with a free hand forearm? Shoulder only while sticking for the puck? Or is it just that Crosby has a time share in the net?

Posted by: chavez66 | May 4, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

and quit complaining about calls, that Jordan Staal "charge" in the first was pathetic.

Posted by: SC87 | May 4, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

The cross check to Varly's head was indeed egregious. However, since Varly was wearing a helmet he should be ok. The best revenge would be for the underdogs to steal one in Pittsburgh.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 4, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Ov dominated Crysby. Crysby's third goal was pathetic. It was basically a high stick but he gets a free pass. I bet he's crying right now. "Boo Hoo, I wish I were as good as OV"

Posted by: ejohnsto | May 4, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

WTF is wrong with Greener? He was the absolute worst player on the ice on either side by far tonight, miscues by him directly responsible for Sid's first two goals. I'm not advocating for him to be benched, I just want to know what his problem is!

Posted by: snakegriffin | May 4, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Just showed the comparison of OV to Sindy:

4 hits by OV and NONE by Sindy...guess he's afraid to mess up his hair???

Posted by: TimDz | May 4, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Pensblog is screaming about missed calls... none of them seem to recall Kunitz' hit on Varly.

Granted, Ovie did get a rather suspect call his way, but every player is going to try to sell a high hit like that.

OV>Sid... tonight.

Posted by: snakegriffin | May 4, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I hope someone chops off Kunitz's head next game. I'm still steaming. That was an absolutely brutal cross check to the head! I hope Varly is not injured. That piece of garbage! Varlamov looked totally stunned. Will god damn VS say something about that?! C'mon! They would not have scored that 3rd goal if not for that garbage! I don't care if we take a penalty, but we can't let people take liberties with Varly. This is the 2nd time he gets nailed in the head and nothing happens. Obviously could not take a penalty at this point of the game, but I really hope someone makes Kunitz eat a stick in game 3. I want to murder him. He could have broken Varly's neck and it was 100% deliberate. VS idiots, say something about that! They pretend like nothing happened! If I were the Caps I'd send a tape in to Colin. That's absolute garbage!

Posted by: ranndino | May 4, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Maybe I'm grabbing at straws, but I'm seriously hoping that Greener does better away from home. Maybe it's like Bruce said last week - he's trying to do too much and not doing any of it very well.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 4, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

That game was not well officiated IMHO. Bad calls all around.

If you don't have a scar on your face or are missing a tooth or two, you aren't worthy to be the leagues best player.

Posted by: CDon | May 4, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

kunitz has been playing that way his entire career, his job is to clog that crease and scrap his way into a goal and he's edgy/dirty enough where he has no problem hacking and whacking his way into the crease. I hope he gets suspended, but he won't. But he's still a talented hockey player who plays a lot on the edge. He hits everyone he can and he goes right to the net when he can. I'd love to have him on our team. There are two reasons Kunitz plays the way he does -- he was an undrafted FA who was waived twice. So he's hungry. And he played on the Ducks, who were the meanest team in the league so he learned to play nastier. And this is the game he feels he needs to play to be successful in this league. He's sneaky enough to xcheck the goalie in that scrum knowing he'll get away with it and hoping that his team will score a goal. And they did.

brutal play the first two periods, much improved play in the 3rd, but unfortunately he was on ice for all 3 goals and arguably played a part in all 3. Even on the last one he lets Kunitz storm his way in there and abuse our goalie.

I'm sure Green is doing his best out there. Have to be patient. Semin took dumb penalties in the first though.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 4, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

anyone notice what Orpik was doing to Semin near the end of the game? he went after him the entire shift, musta hit him about 5 times. Orpik also went after Steckel but Steckel is big enough to handle him.

Ovy went after Malkin all game, and Kunitz went after Mike Green all game.

Gotta love playoff hockey!

pensblog banned me. i feel ashamed. somehow my comments weren't classy enough for a web site that posts a picture of dog crap on a caps jersey or has posters wishing a career ending injury to ovie. i wouldnt wish a career ending injury to crosby or malkin. particularly malkin. he's playing so badly i would want him to stay in the lineup. somewhere in pittsburgh there's a milk carton with number 71 on it. to think that guy has a chance to be this league's mvp...

I can deal with that though, that series woke him up. He was doing his usual lazy skate until Orpik finished a late check on him up high, that led to a scuffle and that led to Semin playing a much better game the rest of the way.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

@ SC87

You're on the wrong blog, buddy. Yeah, you've got every right to complain about Ovie's 2nd goal. That was blatant interference by Semin, but admit please that Kunitz got away with a play that should have had him thrown out of the game with a 5-minute major on Crosby's 3rd. That was absolutely disgusting. If that happened to any other goalie in the NHL they would have gone ballistic and made Kunitz eat a goalie stick. BTW, that stunned Varly and knocked his stick out of his hands. I guess since you can't beat him you've decided to beat him down. That was unbelievably dirty. I officially hate Kunitz now. I hope he gets his god damn legs broken.

Posted by: ranndino | May 4, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

maybe its just me but i thought Malkin played very well, he always sets up a scoring chance when he has the puck.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

if malkin doesn't show up in pitt - this series might be over before it gets back to DC

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | May 4, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

As far as Green goes it's obvious to me that he's far from 100%. I've defended him all year and rightly so (you can check the stats Tarik linked to a few days ago to see how valuable he was this year), but he has not played well in the playoffs. He's either still not completely recovered from the flu or is carrying an injury. He did get slammed into the boards very hard a few games ago.

Posted by: ranndino | May 4, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

instead of hating on Kunitz, lets hope when the time is right that one of our guys does what needs to be done to score a critical goal. Playoff hockey is sometimes very dirty. And even the best teams play that way. Lucic about knocked out the Montreal goalie when he elbowed him and then sat on his head. Then he punched komisarek for coming after him. And you know what..that set the tone for the entire series. Lucic was immovable from that crease after that.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

actually Green hasn't been the same since he delivered that hit on Sjostrom in game 1. He's been gunshy ever since although once in a while he'll pick his spots like he did tonight vs Orpik in the 3rd.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 4, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

SC87 are you kidding? Crosby is a boy band pop star in a red shirt. All 3 goals were because the refs give him cart-blanch to camp out next to the net. That's white boy cart for Hanson or Federline or whoever the high school girls swoon over today.
