ovi goal, right?!!! still at work in LA but cousin keeping me up to date in DC. i miss DC. =/

mike green picks up where he left off - 2 turnovers on his first shift with little pressure on him

sigh

and we need to pick up the hitting, Laich has already passed up 3 chances for clean checks and its his line that needs to set the tone

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 7:17 PM | Report abuse

LCCF: Yup. You might consider using the NHL little webcast thing (not video/audio, it's mostly a running clock, description of all shots and penalties, etc). Or catching the radio feed which is also online.

This is why you should remain on the right coast! ;)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 6, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Ohh so close for Backstrom!

Posted by: sparks3 | May 6, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

great pk by the pens, we barely got anything even set up until the end there

Poti with the bad turnover almost leads to a goal against.

Bears update:

1st intermission, Bears leading Pens 1-0 on a goal by Graham Mink from Giroux and Bourque.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 6, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

tess, good stuff! Keep the updates coming! :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 6, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

this run and gun stuff isn't playoff hockey, too many turnovers in our own end

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I once had a picture in the paper of me in full superman flight mode (horizontal in the air) attempting to sack a QB. Ovie's first goal could be called something of an open netter. But his in flight horizontal pose with only his stick on the ice is an even cooler pic. Nothing easy or lacs about it.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Varly is standing strong in there.

I am waiting for Bylsma to have Ovie's stick checked. You know it is going to come. He might try to rattle the Caps by doing it late in the game if it is close.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | May 6, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov - outstanding....

Posted by: samb99 | May 6, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

not a bad period by the Caps. They had a bunch of scoring chances. I thought Backs should have had that goal, he had an extra second to get a better angle but it's tough to nitpick.

Started getting worked over a bit towards the end of the period but Varly is a beast.

If Nyls takes another offensive zone penalty, I will drive to Pitt and slap him upside the head.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 6, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Where else but in Pittsburgh could the fans be so stupid as to wear, en masse, the colors of the opposing team?

I don't care if there's some idiotic, Pittsburghese reason. The real reason is too many years of smelling that awful pollution that comes out of those steel mills.

Has anyone else noticed that Nylander-Clark-Gordon ($8M) is very likely the most expensive 4th line in NHL history.

Today I had my skin cancer removed just below the eyebrow and with swollen eye and stiches I look NHL ready! Instead of thanking the doctor I told him he gets five minutes!

update from pensblog (my ip still blocked).
photoshops making fun of BB weight, ovie diving. picture of some girl who got a kunitz tattoo/tramp stamp. that will look good in 10 years. "who's kunitz?" "some guy who played for the pens for half a season when they got swept by the caps." maybe she can get the "i" taken out. would be more appropriate.

of course, there are calls for another stick to the neck of varly and complaints about MAF playing the puck. real class.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | May 6, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

dcsportsfan1 - sounds about right

tominfl1 - hope everything worked out

The Versus announcers are the worst... Talk about "Homers"....

It just makes me wonder if they are all hugging there Sid the Whiner dolls while curling into the fetal position crying, "Where's genoooooo??? where's genoooooo???"

I guess one of the good things about this cretins is that whining comes naturally from top to bottom...

One thing is for sure... Czar-lamov is a SOLDIER... Not on my watch buddy....

Posted by: randy_boyd | May 6, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

not getting much out of our 4th line tonight, chris clark started out strong in his first game and hasnt done much since. He got tentative after taking two penalties against the Pens. and Nylander doesn't fit onto that 4th line in any way. The 4th line got a decent scoring chance after Laich double shifted in place of nyles near the end of the pd

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

What is Green's problem? He is a turnover machine!

He gather's the puck and then waits to get forechecked. What?

Posted by: rphilli721 | May 6, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Well, the refs are picking up where they left off...end Game 2, ignore the goaltender interference to allow Sindy to get the hat trick, tonight, end of 1st, ignore Cooke's cross-check on Juice and instead call him for delay of game.

Posted by: MikeF703 | May 6, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Another bull puck penalty to end the first. Again involving Jurcina and a Penguin in the crease. This time though the penguin cross checks Jurcina into the net and Jurcina gets called for delay of game.

Orpik is such a c&^k.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm seeing a goal for Semin in the near future. I think he's playing with a lot of energy tonight.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 6, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

I have the CBC broadcast on hockeystreams. They're not bad.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

tess, I agree on Syomen. He may score two.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Greetings from Ireland. I'm watching the Pens TV feed, and it's funny to hear how the commentator is trying to convince both himself and the audience: "Pens are playing better now, Pens are playing better now, Pens are playing better now..."

Posted by: fnralch | May 6, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

D'oh! Oh well, we're still going to shut this crowd up again soon enough.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 6, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

luck and luck. Call it even.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Nothing to do on that. Left the goalie to make the stop, blocked the pass, on the bad end of luck. No blame, well played. That crap doesn't both Varlamov. No worries.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Wow. How weird is this? Wilkes Barre just scored to tie up the Bears 1-1.

Bench Green

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 6, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Did they show a replay of the alleged penealty? Funny how they never pointed out that Jurcina get cross checked in the back before he knocked the net off in the 1st period.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

tess, that is definitely strange alright...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 6, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 6, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

reshowed on hockeystreams...not a bad call.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Not cool that Feds is hurting, but it's a good sign that he's still on the bench.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 6, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

caps need to relax, they are trying to force things...

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 6, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

CAPS look terrible this period. Pressure in their zone is ridiculous.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Feds is fighting it - c'mon.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 6, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Lots of noise, nothing happening. Hope is not a strategy for the Pens.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

You see Crosby's fan base: white pre-teen girls, the ones jumping up and down snaping pics with their I-phones, they just have more disposable income than me. I'd love to have an I-phone. I'm just a computer engineering major who fixed electronics at the component level in the Army. Of course the refs, the league, are going to be biased for the teen magazine cover boy.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

We are definitely being out-played this period.

Also, when they showed the replay of Feds getting hurt I thought it looked like the butt end of the Pens stick caught Feds in the ribs.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 6, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

He is a baller...if he plays again this game he will get a goal or create it. Mark my words(text).

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 6, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

lol the penguins are absolutely dominating us right now, it looks like a 10 min PP for them

do you realize that if we didn't have Varly that we'd be down 3 zip in this series? They have dominated us in 6 of the 8 periods over 3 games so far. We've won periods 3 in games 1 and 2, theyve owned the 1st 2 periods of each game. We can't get the puck out to save our lives, they're hitting us on every shift and they're jamming the net while we're content to shoot pucks from 10 feet away

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

that was a weird injury to Feds...what did he get shot by a sniper?

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

There is pressure, true, but they won't beat Varly with that type of pressure. Noise.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

theyre drawing penalties but bumrushing our crease, maybe we can take a lesson?

kunitz crushed one of our dmen right on top of our goalie
the pens are a hungry hungry team tonight

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

I guess the caps need to cry to the league so we get some calls too.

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 6, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

pretty sad when sid crosby is outhitting half our team

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

We are definitely not getting any calls tonight. When we held play in the 1st, I counted at least four penalties that could have been called.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

that being said, we did not earn a single call in that p%$#$poor 2nd period.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Man, the Caps couldn't keep it out of their zone... I hope they can find a way to match the intensity, they've managed to bend but not break so far, but another period like that and this game is Pitt's.

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 6, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

not a good period at all but I'm totally happy to be ties at 1. It seems the only goals Varly lets in are lucky bounces and in close when our D isn't helping. This is really encouraging.

One good period and we have this game. C'MON!

Posted by: Moose33 | May 6, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

When some posters were saying the Caps would be getting penatly calls because Bettman wants a 7 game series I thought you were all crazy. All I can say is...WOW. The slash on Green weak, and then Varly gets called after Talbot clips him and ends up in his net and the puck isn't even there and there's no call. This is rediculous.

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 6, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

caps are on their heels, little physicality ... come on caps play like you want to win ... varly is our best player again, we can't simply rely on eye popping goal tending.

Posted by: arlingtonfan1 | May 6, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

well here is the new ammended NHL rulebook>

Rule 210 section 1>If you are in a penguins jersey you may ignore goalie interference.

Posted by: trunkenmath | May 6, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

still havent seen the slash on varly. we are due a penalty or five. kill this one off and i smell a goal...brooks laich needs a garbage score...

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | May 6, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

The VS broadcast team are a joke too. I used to like Doc but now that his Devils are gone he certainly sounds like he's jumped on the Pens bandwagon. My wife was in the other room and asked why I was watching the Pittsburgh channel (we buy Center Ice) I of course told her I was watching the National broadcast.

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 6, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

It's rediculus that the Caps have 4 penalties to 1 for the Penguins. The Caps are on the recieving end of most of the hits. I saw a penguin take a full hack with his stick like it was a sword. Were the blade any sharper it would have cut his hand off rather than just make him drop his stick. Yet we have two slashing calls against. The invisible or phantom calls while Penguins can wind up in open ice even as the camera watches following the puck and hack freely.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I concur, broadcast is sooo biased!!!

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

its clear which team wants to win more tonight. The pens are willing to pay the price and dish out the price. The Caps are content to simply let their goalie make save after save. Our D is running around because our forwards have no forecheck going, no offensive zone possession time. Look at the scoring chances - how many chances have the Pens had from within a few ft of the crease while the Caps shots are all from about 10-12 feet away.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Caps D has been punished by Pens so far.

Boy, how much Caps are missing Erskine!

Posted by: CodePoetry | May 6, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

that penalty on Varly was weeeeeeeeeeak! I said before the game it would be us vs the world. The league wants a long series not a sweep. Pens will get EVERY close call this game and in game 4 as well. We need to do it on our own!

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | May 6, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have kept the shots on the outside for the most part so although the zone time is in favor of the Pens, Varly's been able to make the saves. Flash keeps losing battles on the half boards in the offensive zone leading to rushes the other way. He better get his $%^$ together. If the Caps get this kill and get a goal in the 1st 10mins we can take their heart.

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 6, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

I agree with cstanton1, the Pens are simply outworking us. We domiated the first 10 to 15 minutes and have had our butts handed to us since.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

agreed but the refs usually give the more physical team a break on the calls. If the Caps don't do much in the way of running people over, then the first time they do something really stands out and the refs call that. OTOH the Pens are running us down on every shift so the refs are used to seeing it, it would take something really egregious for the refs to call them out

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Careful guys, let's not sound too much like Pens fans. The Pens just outplayed the caps that period. Here's hoping we can get back to our game this period. All we need is one strong period!!!

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 6, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Early in the third...power play goal by Giroux! Assists Aucoin and Kronwall. Bears lead 2-1.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 6, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

the third peirod has been ours the last two games...time to step up boys!

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

How about the replay VS used on Orpik running over ---INTERFERING-- with a Caps defenseman and leading to a scoring chance. As long as BB has the boys settled they can still take this one. Ovi hasn't played too much so he'll have legs. Feds might have taken an unintentional butt end in the ribs from Gill.

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 6, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

The way things are going the Penguins will sign Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco next year to replace Guerin and Kunitz. They do what they want anyways, might as well thin out opposing lineups while their at it.

hey fan don't i owe you a pie?

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 6, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I predict Backs and Ovie and Semin will be together in the third. Nylander Flash and Koz on the second line.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | May 6, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

The Pens played hard in the second and if they don't have the lead now, they never will. Caps win this with two goals in the third - one into a empty net.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Quit whining. You people sound like a crowd of half-wits from Pittsburgh. The Versus team doesn't care who wins. You are just bitter because the Caps are playing horribly. Root for the team and quit crying. Watch for them to come out flying in the 3rd.

Posted by: MKadyman | May 6, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

With the boys on the road they can continue to keep it simple. Get the kill and we can start attacking. 1-1 going into the 3rd on the road in a playoff game, the game is within reach. No Stanley Cup Champions runs through the playoffs without "stealing" a few games along the way.

so Varly is a wooly mammoth...go figure.

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

its a shooting gallery and varly's the bullseye

total domination in scoring chances by the pens, good to see us at least getting some chances with our 1st line

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

I'll tell you what, luck or not, with Feds hurting, having Nyls to move up to the top lines is very important. I think Nyls might score the winner. I hate Nyls haters.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

All we dreamed of was a goalie to steal games. Varly steals games.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | May 6, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

These announcers are morons. They said BB switched up the lines to get Ovi going. More likely he switched the lines to give Feds less ice time since he's playing hurt.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 6, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

8/19/28 seem to be having rather fresh legs. Malkin & Crosby are already > 20 min TOI.

Posted by: fnralch | May 6, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

The refs should be lined up and shot. Jurcina gets called for being pushed into the net and they were in the blue. Ovie gets called for pushing Crosby into the net from like 10 ft back. Rather than falling forward he rolls to his right and in to the net. Don't know if I hate more the flop or the two faced reffing.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

We get a rush - we get in the zone and we stop looking for where to pass. STOP BEING PRETTY. GET THE DAMN PUCK TO THE NET AND CRASH IT. UNREAL - BACKSTROM.

caps look tired out there, tired of chasing the puck all night and getting hit all night, i'd be surprised to see them generate much in the way of offense the rest of the way, they've been out of sync all night

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I say we whip out the posts and tie the refs to them and let Varlimov lead the firing squad. Set it up like a soccer style penalty kick.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

we have earned a loss tonight

Posted by: Satts | May 6, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

FINALLY A CALL. If the announcers made attention - POTI was picked. Idiots.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 6, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, seven penalties in a row? Wow.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Pretty funny that the Versus commentators just assumed that it was another Penguins PP.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 6, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Wow, finally. I was wrong. The refs are a bit mental. One PP, one tie.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

wow, the announcers are even calling fake penalties against the CAPS...whistle blows and it must be interference on the CAPS. Again, that being said, we have not earned any calls tonight.

Caps and Pens 2-2 and headed for OT. Bears and baby Pens 2-2 and headed for OT. I think I'll have an ulcer till this is over!

Posted by: tess2201 | May 6, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Caps need some jump. 2nd period they were awfully flat and on their heels. Same thing in the 3rd but not quite as bad.

Hopefully, that goal woke them up.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | May 6, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

btw, the baby pens just tied their game w/the bears, also 2-2 going into OT of GAme 3. Crazy!

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 6, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

The Pens are throwing every damn thing they have tonight....everything...and it's OT. Have they been more aggressive? Yes. Are they winning? Nope. This is why this team is special: the one weakness we had no longer exists. This one is over. Caps win and go up 3-0. Way too much energy spent by the Pens...they have nothing left. Might be over in the first three minutes or the first rush.

BTW, Canes (and the SE) laying some wood.

Heck yeah, put out @$$e$ on the PP and look what happens. Way to go boys. The bonehead broadcast team didn't even see Dupuis through the block at the blue line so Malkin could get the first down. They thought Malkin drew a penalty. These guys are making me sick. Let's get this one boys!!!

dear effing lord. The CBC are tramps. Aside from the Varly is good commentary - and my dog could make that - they have nothing good to say about the Caps. Christ. The Pens were ALL out to win and they haven't. That's a better reflection on the Caps then on the Pens. Oh, by the way Pittsburgh, as you like to say, you're playing against an AHL'er.

I love Canada but the commentary is moronic.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Getting the CBC feed here in London. Bob Cole sounded so giddy when Malkin scored, and so depressed when Nicky tied it up. Then he said "some might say the Pens deserve this game..." ...making me sick.

We do need to skate harder though.

Boudreau should get Leonhardt and the video team to go through the game and send the league office all of the missed calls the way Lemieux does.

Why is it that after every whistle Crosby is talking to the official? Guessing it's not about Obama's first 100 days.

I cannot wait until our home team tv crew is back. This Sh&^ is painful to listen to. I would listen to the radio but for the 5 second delay. I love how they assumed Malkin drew a penalty. Shows lack of a basic understanding of the rules - he had control of the puck yet they still stopped play. When the Caps win this one - I hope that row of RED throws down every hat they have! Puck Fittsburgh!

Quit the whining guys! They got more calls mostly because they were taking it to the Caps. We're doing well with the game tied with the way Pitt has played. All we need is one now!

First Ovi shot and it's over.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

for the record, the reason we've been dominated so far is our forwards, not our D. Our forwards have not put the same effort into the offensive zone that the Pens forwards have put in ours. Consequently their D has no problem clearing their end while our D has been hammered on every dump-in and our forwards have lost many puck battles on the halfboards. The fault is in our forwards.

Despite Backstom's tying goal he has a lot of the same detracting qualities that Crosby has. They have very similar numbers. He's no where near as celibrated which may be exactly the differance in stats. No preferential treatment and less to hate. Still I'd like to see him shave his head, lose a tooth, get a tatoo and gain 20 lbs of muscle.

it still looks like the caps are on a PK the last 45 mins of this game

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 6, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Result is not that surprising considering how awfully the Caps played tonight. No energy. OV couldn't keep the puck on his stick. D couldn't clear the zone. Varly played great again. Too bad he let in another one from afar, but the only reason this game is a 3-2 OT loss is and not a 7-2 regulation loss is because of him. Not sure what has to happen for the Caps to come out in one game this series and impose their will. But it better happen in Game 4.

the troubling part is, where was the in-game adjustment by Boudreau? The Caps were unable to stem the flow of the Penguins from about the 8 minute mark of the game. It was an onslaught. I don't think I've seen a team dominate us this badly in our own end. Every time they came up ice they set up a scoring chance. Every time we went up ice it usually ended in a feeble scoring "attempt"

is it just me or do shots always seem to deflect off of morrisson's skate and into our goal? i mean it's always MO... i don't know, it just feels like deja vu

but in all honesty, we deserved to lose that game, we were so flat during the second and could have been better in the 3rd. if the pens were any good on their pp we would have been cooked.

although, i don't really like blaming the refs, i just think the officiating in this game was crap !

Posted by: jogabonito | May 6, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Satts, really? On the road against a good team, who's down 0-2, and we go deep in OT? I think we deserved it as much as they did.

Posted by: saintex | May 6, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps had won this game, I would've said that the only possible reason would be that God wanted them to. They were outplayed and outhustled in every way. The last two periods and most of the OT looked like they were Pens PPs. They looked like they were skating in Jello. Only Varlamov gave the Caps a ghost of a chance.

I love the Caps, but why can't they ever seem to put a team away when they have the opportunity?

They need to put this one behind them and really come out flying in game 4.

Posted by: chrisd3 | May 6, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Pens have been outplaying the Caps so a break was bound to go their way at some point. And it happened tonight. This loss has to shake something up in the Caps or they could lose control of this thing quickly.

i know this is a troll talkin :) but I kinda feel the same way. The Caps have now been outplayed in 8 of 10 periods. That's insane. To be up 2-1 with that kind of domination by the other team. I don't know if we got lulled into sleep by an anemic Rangers offense that we still needed 7 games to beat or what. But we all know that if not for our goalie, we'd be down 3 zip. No doubt about it.

Saintex...really. I was hoping we would go against the grain and get lucky, but we were outplayed in every facet (shots, hits, offensive zone time, chances, etc). They took it to us and we failed to have any kind of sustained offense after the 1st 12 minutes. If BAcks had buried the wraparound to make it 2-0 in the 1st, it might have been a different story.

It's like a $20 hot dog you have to eat from both ends, I guess because you have to share it.
42 to 23 on shots. 7 to 2 in ref. favoritism. The Caps are easily the more physical team at any other time. But had they even matched physical intensity it would have been like 24 to 2 in penalties. Might as well keep it 5 on 4 and ref naturally. The other side is Varlimov is just that good. Let it be 24 to 2 in penalties. Let the face of beauty have bloody plugs in each nostril, a cut across the bridge, and a eye that Clint Eastwood has to cut. The Million Dollar Baby would gain some respectability, rather than just notability for crying to refs.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 6, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

could it be that the Caps are just a bit tired? after all, they didn't have a week off like Pittsburgh did. Having to play back to back games worries me a bit

Posted by: PGM17 | May 6, 2009 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Obviously, we were outplayed and did not deserve it.

I am more concerned with how slow we looked all night. All the turnovers, missed passes, hesitation...at one point there were three Caps near the corner in our own end and all three just kind of lazily reacted and watched a single Pen player swoop in who was not even in the camera shot initially and beat all three to the puck. Absolutely embarrassing!!!

I think we will play better next game, but the problem is we have a very talented team on a roll like a freight train coming down the tracks and I don't have faith our D has it in them to slow them down enough. Green has absolutely stunk! No D and no offense. He plays scared.

Hopefully, Erskine will be back bc he was our best D in the last series. I think he is sorely missed along with Breasher.

Ovie besides the goal did not play great either.

Posted by: rphilli721 | May 6, 2009 10:56 PM | Report abuse

Good lord Caps fans -- could you just accept a loss and a great hockey game and not obsess over whether Crosby is talking to a referee or a conspiracy by the league to have the Pens win! If there was a conspiracy would a ref make an interference call with under two minutes to go (the right call by the way). He could have easily let that go but he called it and it was the right call. The Pens otherwise dominated the game and created the penalties.

I've been reading these board all series and the obsession and bias you guys have against Crosby and the Pens is blinding you to some great hockey I'm afraid. There has not been a call that has cost either team a game (unlike Detroit last night) and Crosby and OVechkin are turning this into a memorable series. Enjoy it.

lightshow -- as I said, a tad obsessive on this league conspiracy thing?

Posted by: zorba992 | May 6, 2009 11:12 PM | Report abuse

Zorba992,

Yes I know, its just my way of dealing with losing.

It would have been a nightmare for NHL if Caps swept Pens. Whole Crosby vs Ovie hype would have gone down the tube.

Yes some Penalties were legit and lazy. Like Green Slash, Pothier Delay of game come to mind.

But a call on Varly was WEAK, you could make that call 7-9 times a game on Goalies.

Bottom line Boudreau is right. Our guys got run down constantly killing PP's and just didn't have the LEGS left to keep up with constant pressure by them.

Still I have an issue with THOMAS, he has been playing Scared and is way too easy to knock of the puck. It might be worth it to sit him a game. He has great individual skills but looks like he is intimidated.

Posted by: lightshow | May 6, 2009 11:18 PM | Report abuse

agree on Varly call, remember Green elbow to Orpik's head last game that went uncalled. I imagine that you would then say that leads to Kunitz crosscheck on Varly that went uncalled. I'm just saying that I don't think any calls or non-calls are costing anyone the game.

Bourdreau is saying what he should say as the coach.

I will be very interested to find out what Green's problem is. it isn't possible that he's just playing so bad is it? he must be sick or injured.

Semin needs to turn it up a bit too, he is leaving his great wrist shot unused.
