*grin* Backstrom :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Way to go, Nicky!!!!!

As a side note, the baby pens are leading the Bears 1-0 early in the game. But the Bears are about to go on the PP.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

I'm stuck at work and will miss half the game.. what the heck just happened?

Posted by: visionof75 | May 8, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Vision: Nicky just put a lazer past Fleury.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Eh, bad deflection, no biggie. Back to business, rock the red, etc.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Oops...now Gonchar just tied it up, went five-hole on Varly.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Was that Clark penalty justified or did the refs just tie it up?

Posted by: visionof75 | May 8, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

I didn't see it and they didn't replay it, the finks. 10:1 says it was the refs tying it up, though; will have to ask my friend who's there...

Posted by: irockthered | May 8, 2009 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Is anyone else having problems with the sound on the HD feed? Mine's all wonky. Boo!

Posted by: amberlynne | May 8, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

But I agree: bad deflection. We can get this.

And yes, Clark did the cross-check, according to my friend who's there. It was a legitimate call.

Posted by: irockthered | May 8, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

When this Caps team decides to defend inside out; to the blue line, they'll win many Stanley Cups.

Posted by: Realness1 | May 8, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Faceoff... hand-pass. And Varly, PLEASE don't do that again!

Posted by: irockthered | May 8, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

amberlynne: How so? And I presume you're using CSN HD?

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

AUGH! Robbery! Highway ROBBERY!!!

Posted by: irockthered | May 8, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

irockthered: Third time's a charm? :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

GregAnnapolis: Yeah, CSN HD. Every 20 seconds or so, the sound winks out.

Posted by: amberlynne | May 8, 2009 7:29 PM | Report abuse

it started with Green, again. damn.

Posted by: fnralch | May 8, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

WTF? Pathetic defense!

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Unleash the fury and shut this crowd up please?

(And no panicking allowed -- even if this doesn't turn out favorably, we still hold the advantage with home ice.)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

amberlynne: Nothing like that here... who's your provider? (I've got Verizon FiOS)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Go figure. It's game 3 all over again. Caps come out hot, then a penalty, now all Pens. Dang it.

Posted by: defpotec | May 8, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

No better time for a PPG than right now.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

D sucks ... coaches for D suck ... can't clear the zone ... and can't get out of the way of a shot from the blue line ... omg ... does anyone have a count of how many shots have gone in off our defensemen??? ... it's incredible that coaches can't seem to get them to GET OUT OF THE WAY so Varly can see the shot from outside ... sheesh

Posted by: obx13 | May 8, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Bears update:
Baby Pens 3 -- Bears 0
End of the 1st period. WBS had only 5 shots on goal.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

GregAnnapolis: Ironically, I have Comcast. Heh. I guess I'll just have to suffer through regular definition. *SIGH* ;)

Posted by: amberlynne | May 8, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

On that penalty, it looked to me like Gonchar was the one who stuck his leg out, not Ovie.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

This isn't looking good. If Varley has a bad game, the Caps are sunk...

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 8, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

I've been holding my tongue on Green, till now. He's shown himself especialy against the Penguins. A forward playing defense. He's been awful. Don't care if he scores a goal. Just as long as he does his job. Defensemen should be able to defend. If he gets that done, scoring is a bonus. Bench him or move him to a wing.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 8, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

it starts w/ 1v1's and 2v2's in practice. fundamentals, consistently applied.

nice knee ov

Posted by: wendel2 | May 8, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

That should've been a misconduct penalty for Ovechkin. That was one of the dirtier knees I've seen.

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

The Ovi knee didn't *look* intentional to me. Who knows what he was thinking, but it looked accidental to me.

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 8, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

SC87 ... it looked bad ... but i'm a huge Gonchar fan and he was the one that extended his leg ... not Ovechkin ... look at it with objective eyes ... no wonder your handle is Sindy Crybaby ... lmao ...be fair

Posted by: wendel2 | May 8, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

nice cheap shot ovechkin...you worthless piece of garbage. cheap shot. don't try to defend him. he didn't even try to check gonchar. it was a blatant cheap shot. you want to compare him to crosby now???

Posted by: ipnightly | May 8, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green with the turnover leads to a critical goal against and then of course one weak goal by Varly compounds the issue. Gotta give both teams credit tonight, the Caps came out harder (you can always tell by the 1st shift of the game if they're ready to play), and the Pens have not backed down one inch. Staal, Matt Cooke, Malkin and Kunitz are leading the forecheck again. Boy do I miss Cooke. We should've re-signed him.

And Poti still sucks, he can't clear the puck to save his life. Our forwards are doing a pretty good job in this game of working the puck deep and working the boards.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

SC87, that was hardly a cut and dried "dirty" play. *If* Ovi was intending to injure him, he sure disguised it well.

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 8, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Number1 if gonchar wasn't a pussy and not try to get out of the way he would have never been hurt. Green should be benched, and there is 40 minutes left...not worries yet

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 8, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 8, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

lets be honest, if a Penguin did that to Ovey this whole board would be up in arms. So lets call it the way it needs to be called, that could easily have been a 5 min major for kneeing, we got lucky. And we got lucky there wasn't a boarding call on Laich on the 1st shift against Gonchar right after Backstrom planted Orpik.

But I like that the refs are lettin em play. The only weak call was the Chris Clark play, that should've been let go the same they let go the Malkin interference hit on Poti (who deserves it the way he's been playing)

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

wendel2, I don't know if you're watching the same game as us, but it was Gonchar who stuck his leg out, not Ovechkin. There's not a freaking chance in the world that a sane referee would have given a game misconduct for that. Of course, given the current series...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

you can't deny that was a vicious dirty knee that could be a suspendable act

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

just saw the hit again on replay ... and it was very obvious that Ovechkine leaned in with his shoulder to try to check Gonchar ...and Gonch was able to sidestep the hit but left his leg out there ... if you can't see that you just aren't objective ... see it how you like

Posted by: obx13 | May 8, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

get over it, its the playoffs. Cheap hits occur with more regularity, thats what makes the rivalries great. Thats why Malkin elbowed Jurcina who has been demolishing penguins left and right all series.

You want to feel the hatred on the ice, thats playoff hockey. I'm sure Kunitz will find a way to stick our goalie in the face again at some point.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse

SC87, give it up already about the Ovie penalty. You're out of your mind.

Posted by: defpotec | May 8, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

this team needs to grow some balls during the intermission. 3rd goal was terrible on Varly but you can't pin the first two on him - screen and once again can't clear the zone or the crease.

@ipnighty,

you are such a fing homer it's clouding your judgment or causing you to halucinate. Ovie didn't extend the knee, he kept going in his path to hit Gonchar high and Gonchar moved his upper body out of the way. Just use your freakin' eyes. Noone wants Gonchar to be injured and I hope he's ok but you have to get real.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

SC87, you need to look at it again, Gonchar tried to avoid getting hit, if he doesn't leave his leg out there, there's no problem. It looks like Gonchar got injured, that doesn't make it a dirty play. Until I see another view showing otherwise, I am convinced it was a bad outcome from someone trying to avoid a hit.

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 8, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

and for anyone hoping that Alzner gets a crack at our lineup, please don't. Watch the Hershey game online tonight, he looks like utter sh_t :)

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Ugly game! It doesn't look like our day. Going to the movies.

I didn't think Ovi hit Gonchar on purpose. But it would be our luck for him to get suspended.

If I were Nylander, do you know what I would do? Ask the Caps management to trade him -- to the Pens.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 8, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

SC87 we all know who you are in bed with, so you think what you say matters here?

Posted by: Boomer80 | May 8, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Can we trade green for a defenseman that can actually play defense? Maybe 2?

Posted by: jboogie1 | May 8, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

re: the ovechkin hit, for those making excuses .. he was going to hit Gonchar one way or the other. Gonchar has every right to try and get out of the way of the hit. He doesn't owe Ovechkin a clean shot at him. And the burden is still on Ovy to make sure its a clean hit, and if he doesn't have a shot at a clean hit then he needs to avoid the hit. That's just plain logic. I mean, I could care less. I love seeing this kind of stuff.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

@SC87
Lift your blinders up and look at the play again. If you looked at the replay Ovechkin was stepping into hit him flush and it only looked bad because Gonchar went to sidestep the hit thus his leg meeting Ovechkins. That was not dirty or vicious. It was a hard hit. A dirty hit would've been Ovie coming nowhere near his body and sticking out his leg. Unreal.

Besides the point now - a disaster of a period. Nice to see them watch Guerin bury the rebound on the 2nd goal and the third goal all on Varly. Makes me wonder if that was the old or new glove.

The Caps better throw all caution to the wind and come at this team. The Pens are taking the boards away on the outlet. Go up the center of the ice - they are leaving it wide open.

Mike Green is panty waste. Plain and simple. He's disappeared. I hate saying it but his effort to get the puck out thus resulting in a goal was putrid. Look out. Still 40 minutes left. That was nasty - let's hope for a 40 minutes to remember next. Haha. Playoff hockey at its best.

Ice Breakers Goal SHakers.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 8, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

I'm not trying to be a jerk, it was a dirty play, Ruslan Fedotenko just said Ovie should be suspended. You're the ones who should take off the Ovechkin goggles and reliaze it was a vicious knee.

Posted by: SC87 | May 8, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Moose33: You have to remember that these Pens folk are probably watching the FSN-Pittsburgh feed. I regularly gagged while watching that channel on Center Ice this season. It is unbelievable some of the things they casually state as fact. So it's completely understandable that they are seeing things so differently.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | May 8, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Green needs to sit. He isn't doing anything for the team. If he's hurt he needs to admit it and sit for the team. UGH.

Posted by: CapsKH | May 8, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Maybe the Caps needed to practice more. Not a hard practice but a light practice to practice fundamentals like faceoffs; etc. That's what the Pens have done under Bylsma. It seems that the Pens work harder in practice or that's the word I've gotten from people who've watched practice.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 8, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Can we trade green for a defenseman that can actually play defense? Maybe 2?

Posted by: jboogie1 | May 8, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

not on a McPhee team. He'd rather have an offensive defenseman who is defensively challenged than the other way around. Unfortunately, thats not what helps you go deep in the playoffs. Defense is still the better option of the two.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

17 pens pp's to 9 entering tonights game

Posted by: Realness1 | May 8, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

in game 3, the major issue was our forwards not working the puck hard in the offensive end. But it also exposed the fact our D can't get the puck outta the zone. Today, the D is still under fire.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

cstanton1:
Alzner looks like sh_t alot of nights. I sit there some nights and just shake my head. Carlson, on the other hand, has stepped right into the lineup and looks great. He could easily pass Alzner on the depth chart.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Penguins are burning both ends of the candle. Dirty play, freely hitting, while also flopping and acting out shakespearian death scenes.

Ovie's penalty was like David vs. Goliath. They had near equal opp. on the puck. Had Ovie hit squarely it would have been legal, like a near sack of a QB. Ovie instead pokes at the puck, leaving his body open to attack. There was absolutely no collision. Goliath spins around only because he was avoiding contact. Ovie was so wide open and off balance reaching for the puck that there was no way he wouldn't go down if there were the slightest contact. Instead Goliath spins, grabs his heart, and falls face first and tail stiffly verticle. Presumable because he read the story before hand.

Sadly I was just thinking of how big and strong defenders Gill and Gonchar were as compared to Green. Ovie's been hit half a dozen times (or given a hit) that resulted in a similar spin but with more ariel. "Oh the horror. The Horror!" never is uttered from his lips. He's poping back up as if on springs. Wicked grin on his lips. Like he's wanting more of the same.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 8, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

we need 1 or 2 scott stevens/chelios guys on d

Posted by: Realness1 | May 8, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

I blame Cris Clark for one of Pens goals. Getting a penalty nowhere near a play is just stupid.

Ovechkin's penalty was justified. Accidental or not, you cant stick your knee out and cause a player to fall. But it WAS accidental so no major... Its a CONTACT sport and people are going to get hurt

Posted by: jboogie1 | May 8, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Don't worry about SC87. He can't even fit in with the real hockey fans in Ottawa. That is why he is here.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | May 8, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

gregannapolis,

It's just a matter of looking at it as it is. Idiots like SC87 and that other retard don't have an objective bone in their body.

If that same play happened to Ovi I would be very upset but wouldn't go on the other teams website and preach dirty vicious knee. Talk about seeing things differently.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

IMO Carlson should already be ahead of Alzner on the depth chart. He's not afraid to use his body, and he skates the puck well out of the zone, and can play the point on the PP. He's also meaner and uses his strength to his advantage

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

anyone have any suggestions for getting tickets tomorrow night? I missed that email they sent to STH and now i'm feeling like I could survive a game 5 after all.

Posted by: abuddy2004 | May 8, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

How was it a dirty play? You keep saying that, but it doesn't make it so. A couple of people have explained why they think it isn't, you haven't offered anything. What, exactly was dirty about it? Ovi DIDN'T stick his leg out, Goncher moved out of the way. It's too bad that Goncher looks injured, but the result isn't what makes a play dirty, it is the intent. Is trying to hit the same as trying to injure?

Posted by: isaacc7 | May 8, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

SC87
Nobody is saying you're being a jerk. I can see your end of it. I've been around hockey a while and believe me while a diehard Caps fan I'm looking at it objectively. If Gonchar doesn't go to sidestep the hit - he is hit flush and the legs never meet. Fedotenko probably is reacting to what he saw full speed. I'd like to know if he was on the bench or on the ice.

I don't have Ovechkin goggles. :) I have realist goggles and that's how I look at it. If Ovie didn't go near the body and just stuck out his leg - I'd be the first to step up and say he should be suspended.

Either way - we agree to disagree. :) It's allowed.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 8, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

The NHL is an $&*king joke. As usual, the officiating is once again, ignoring calls. It's an embarrassment. Why should the Caps even try anymore if they're just going to get effed.

Posted by: CapsKH | May 8, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

The Gonchar-Ovechkin looked like no one's fault. On the Tivo replay you can see Gonchar was going to play the puck, then turned away when Ovechkin was coming. Of course if you turn away you need to keep your outside skate out there to hold the turn. Even so Gonchar tried to pull his leg in (probably to avoid a painful collision) but could only pull it in so far.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

A PATHETIC PATHETIC PP TO END THE PERIOD. Nobody want's to shoot. Backstrom - no you take it. Semin - no you take it. Pass pass pass pass pass. Oh wait I think we should shoot. All these passes aren't going to get us a goal. I mean just horrifying to watch. It's like the keystone capers throwing the hot potato around forgetting what to do with it.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 8, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

if we had more players like Steckel and Bradley and less players who overpass the puck we'd be better off in the playoffs. Our skill players just constantly turn the puck over. Like Semin who failed to clear the puck on an easy clear TWICE on the PK, almost cost us a goal. He has no business being on the PK. Another needlessly high risk strategy by Bruce

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

played a bit better with 5 minutes to go. They have a shot which is all you can ask for after 40 minutes of embarrassing hockey.

Noone knows what the officials are doing and for some reason our PP can't seem to get organized.

Just play hard for 20 minutes. Please.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 8, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Why the F do they insist on being cute with the puck when they are losing? Never mind when they are leading the game. There should be some URGENCY, instead of screwing around with the puck. Like I said, time's wasting.

It would be just like this team to tie it up in the 3rd, only to pi$$ it away and lose late.

GregAnnapolis - thanks for the tip about tickets, and don't worry I'd rather be a flyers fan than a pens fan, and i'd rather die in the most painful way possible before having to cheer for any PA team (other than Hershey).

anytime you get a team built like the caps, you'll have to deal with frustrating players who overpass and overfancy the puck around. Its embarassing. Its no secret why our checkers play so much better than our top players. They play a simple style more suited to the playoffs. Get the puck in, don't turn it over, dump, chase, hit, grind, jam it in somehow or get it back to the point for a shot with a screen

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I figured Varly would have an off game, and here it is. The Pens made a big mistake getting zero shots on two PPs. This is the game they get to Varly and they haven't finished. I see a quick score to finish this PP and then we have a period of struggle.

Come on, boys.

Posted by: saintex | May 8, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

hershey about to blow a 2-0 series lead and let the Baby Pens tie up the series. They're down 4-1 now. No surprise that their only goal comes from their 4th line.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

I think all the penalty calls have been alright tonight. Nothing to complain about. the Ovi - Gonchar hit was incidental. AO was certainly ready to make a hit and we got knee on knee. I hope Gonchar can get back because I don't want anyone injured. You can't sit in judgement Ovi and not comment Malkin going to the head with the elbow. I think everyone's playing hard and I'm cool with everything. The Pens will rue not putting the Caps away in the second.

Classless play by a classless player. Hopefully the league will punish Ovechkin like the cheap shot artist he is. Head shots, knee shots, charging. He does it all. Highly skilled -- yes. Highly dirty. Absolutely. Throw the book at him.

Posted by: saintex | May 8, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Ovie didn't even deserve 2 min.

Gonchar tried to avoid Ovie and got injured. Check replay, Ovie doesn't stick out his knee at all, he just skates thru. Knee penalty is given when the player is sticking out his knee with intent to catch the other player. Ovie didn't even move his leg.

Classless? Like punching a player a player in the balls while he was already involved in a scrap? or maybe attacking a guy at the faceoff dot while the puck was dropped? Keep showing your blatant ignorance. Whiny crysby is the epitome of the classless penguins and their fans.

Well odd man rush - BAM. Mistake - good night.

Quit crying. You might have had 200 fans in the first two games. You might have that tomorrow night. Not Caps fans fault that more penguins "fans" weren't at the games. Btw, plenty of pittsburgh people in DC (they HAD to move away because they couldn't find jobs in that dump). They HAVE DC area zip's on their credit card info. They could have gotten tix, and maybe they did. Just not in bunches like they hoped. Singles were all that's left.
Quite crying. Maybe Maria should put a geo block on the dump, I mean Igloo for game 6, if you are so worried about so much red in your building.

Look at the players not performing -

Poti and Green on D
Semin on offense.

Some of our other guys can improve but you can't bench them all so you have to leave them in. But Semin has been awful. And he needs to be taken OFF the PP and get someone who plays a simpler game in there.

I'd also bench Flash and replace him with Osala.

Defensively, Sloan is better than Poti. And Green's minutes need to be trimmed and he needs to be taken off the PK unit.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 8, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Through four games, Caps haven't outplayed the Pens in one of them yet. I can't see this series going in the Caps favor after two stinkers in Pittsburgh. If Game 3 didn't teach them what they needed to do, not sure what will.

But again, it's about concentration with this team. Whether it's overskating a puck, making a bad pass, not keeping the puck on your stick, not clearing the zone or showcasing a faulty glove, it's all concentration. Right now, the Caps don't have a mental edge. The Pens do, and that's been the difference.

As for tonight, the forwards offered no support defensively and Varly let in two or three cheapies. Offensively, Caps really aren't crashing the net much. Again. Clark did for his goal, but the other two came from slappers above the dots. The questions rises again: Who is going to do the dirty work?

I'd say it can only get better, but I'm not sure if that's true.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Chris Clark... I blame Chris Clark for the early momentum shifting unnecessary penalty way at the beginning just after we took the 1-0 lead. How many times does the real lumberjack take stupid penalties? I'll give him credit on this one, he used his body for the late hit instead of a stick hack.
