Come on, boys. Foot to the throat in the first period. No tomorrow. None. Zero. NO TOMORROW.

Well there's the D striking again. Way to go D - ANOTHER - odd man rush. That would make the one millionth odd man rush you've given up the season. What's in the prize bag for the D?

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 11, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

this one's on Varly, unfortunately. Hope he's not losing his confidence.

Posted by: fnralch | May 11, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Not the start I was hoping for, but we've barely started. BTW, did any of you see Tarik's post that Green has his last fave stick?

Posted by: wocoliz | May 11, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Lost 3 games in a row... Brashear should not be a scratch... he would of added the physical play on the checking line... Rediculous.

Posted by: tony325 | May 11, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Penalty on us. What a surprise.

Posted by: wocoliz | May 11, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Our forwards are too slow and it lets the Pens get back to back check. Not good.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 11, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Well, I don't think this is the game plan we wanted...

Posted by: tess2201 | May 11, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

17:3 SOG tells something about the team energy...even accounting for our penalties...damn

Posted by: fnralch | May 11, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

biggest game of the year and we come out flat again.....shots 17 to 3...what a joke...........we dont seem interested .........pens finish checks and simply want it more........wtf

Posted by: wendel2 | May 11, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Not a good period--we're lucky we're only down 1 goal. If this is uber desperation, I'm afraid to watch the next two periods. LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | May 11, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

First, quick repost from an earlier thread:

@ RedBirdie

Trying to predict the winner of the Olympic hockey tournament is kind of a pointless exercise because there are 6 or even 7 teams that can win the gold, potentially and since it's a one game knockout system anything can happen.

I think the main favorites to win will be Canada and Russia, but Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States will also have very good teams.

In reality any of those can win and these tournaments are almost unpredictable due to the lose one game and you're out system once we get past the group stage. For example, a few years ago the World Championship was held in Russia and the Russians had a team that was absolutely loaded with talent including Pavel Bure. They completely bombed and finished 11th! Talk about cracking under the pressure of playing at home!

Posted by: ranndino | May 11, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Boudreau's dumbass doesn't realize and still has yet to notice HIS DEFENSE IS TOO SLOW against the Pens speed. This stupid ass attacking in the neutral zone has burned them all year and tonight as well. Stick with the system but adjust. Stop pinching up in the neutral zone.

I love that last few seconds on the powerplay when all five guys stood on the perimeter - nobody moved around and no one was in front. If this is the way our PP is going to play then good night. This pathetic.

Some difference this game was so far. It was more of the same from the time they left in game 4 to tonight. Same old crap. This team doesn't generate.
They need to wake up. Again another flat start. FLAT FLAT FLAT. Flatitals.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 11, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

I'm so frustrated right now. Can someone please show Semin where the Pens goal is? He seems really reluctant to pass in that direction.

Posted by: wocoliz | May 11, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

We're playing like total crap. Our defense is non-existent and neither is our offense. Varly is the only reason we're only down 1-0. Odd man rushes, constant giveaways in the neutral and our own zones. WTF is going on? I'm usually positive, but that period was disgusting. The shots are 18-5 in favor of the Pens in a game we HAVE to win!

On the goal we had not one, but 2 guys pinch. Jurcina went for a big hit after one of our guys already pinched. That was retarded and resulted in a 2 on 1.

Varly might have gotten that one, but he made a number of tremendous saves. One was on a one timer of a perfect setup in the slot by... our D. Just passed the puck from behind the net right on a Pens' player's stick!

I don't know what we're doing out there, but this is really starting to look like our last game of the season.

Posted by: ranndino | May 11, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Frankly, I can only hope that BB told the boys to play quietly for the first 20 min trying to exhaust the Pens and then switch the gears into full throttle.....no other explanation would fit...

Posted by: fnralch | May 11, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

lol, outshot 18-5. Good start guys! Did anyone really think we'd come out somehow and get a jump on these guys? come on, they're quicker to the puck and more aggressive, end of story.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

its also hard when our forwards have no desire to get the puck in deep and forecheck. Laziest top 2 lines in the playoffs belong to the Cappies.

no excuse for not playing a 60 min game. Someone earlier implied anyone was crazy for thinking the Caps didn't want to do everything in their power to win this game. Well coming out this flat for the first 20 mins should answer that question. The mental toughness on this team is lacking.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse

So far, so bad... 18 shots by Pens vs 5, and losing faceoffs as well

Posted by: CodePoetry | May 11, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Two periods left; gotta step it up. Converting on what's left of the PP would be a nice start. GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | May 11, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Now, the question is how the Pens are going to react. It seems that Crosby is not 100% which clearly affects the whole game pattern for them.

Posted by: fnralch | May 11, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

The igloo's ice must be crappy again tonight. A lot of bouncing pucks and players falling.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 11, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

I was caught naping and woke up just in time to turn on the TV and see Crosby score the first goal. $#!+

A little latter with 8:44 left in the first period. Laich gets called for cross checking. I'll take it. Both because it was Crosby and that the Caps were defending their goal!
The problem was (not that it is a bad problem to have) that it like a 2 on 2 tag team wrestling match that got out of hand. The timing was nearly the same but like a second before Laich checks Crosby repeatedly into the ice, Malkin grabs Semin's leg and Atomic Body Slams him. To Semin's credit he had just cleanly checked him into the boards and was walling him right out of the play. Exactly what you'd hope out of the Caps defending their goal.

But there it is... Malkin can Atomic Body Slam and it is OK. Laich just put a little extra emphasis on a clean check and goes to the box. It was after Malkin's infraction but nearly simultaneous. Just a bit too close to be reactionary. Feasable but I don't think so. Still enough to say Malkin's was first and should be most assured to be called. Maybe it is Crosby lying in the fetal position expecting a call. I think most would be on a knee trying to get back in the play. Another cool part of that whole goings on was another Cap had flicked Crosby's stick away just prior. One would be tempted to say Laich should have been happy that he was on his backside with out a stick. But on it's own merit the box might be worth a little emphasis.

Posted by: chavez66 | May 11, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Unreal - no trip against Semin. If that had been Malkin - penalty. That is inexcusable. Someone needed to get the puck and fire it at that ref's head and send him a message if he's not gonna make a blatant call like that. Unreal.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 11, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Caps D which includes the forwards is simply not good enough to hold onto any lead unless there's only a min left in the game. It was obvious after they took the lead that the team stopped skating and hitting. Just a matter of time before the Pens scored. Poti made a terrible decision to step up at the blueline and he got caught, Poti continues to suck.

And Semin in spite of his hard work which led to the go ahead goal, had some real bad shifts in that period. He refuses to backcheck at all, refuses to challenge anyone down low in his corner of the ice, and twice he had breakaways and was unable to get any separation or a shot off.

And Bruce has shortened his bench to 3 lines, now all 3 lines are looking tired. He doesn't trust his 4th liners at all. Too bad. A good team has to be able to roll 4 lines/.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

who else saw friggin orpik kick semin's leg out from under him after the whistle. What a punk!!!

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 11, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

don't get so carried away, thats normal hockey in the playoffs. Orpik will continue to torment Semin. If the Caps had a problem with it,they should start tormenting Crosby in the same manner but no Capital really wants to take on that role.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Was just going to post that this period was much, much better after Boudreau ripped them a new one and then Poti and Jurcina combine for another gift of a goal. Absolutely bone headed play by Jurcina throwing that puck between his legs without looking. He must've thought he was Michael Jordan.

I'm not usually the one to whine about the officiating, but how is a blatant trip on Semin's breakaway not a penalty right after Pens tie it on the PP given to them on a pretty iffy interference?

Posted by: ranndino | May 11, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Pens coach has given his 4th line twice as much time as Bruce has given our 4th line. That could translate into a more tired Caps team in the 3rd period. If the Caps team is so deep, why can't we roll 4 lines?

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I'm just trying to figure out why Semin is so slow that he let Gill catch up to him when he had a clear chance at a breakaway. Everything he does seems to be in slow motion.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Jonathan6

Yea, really. WTF. That is total bullsh*t. The Caps are owed at least two power plays in the third.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | May 11, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

That last goal shows the Caps are trying a bit too hard. If they play up to their God given abilities, hustle and play inside out D they could win the Cup this season.

Posted by: Realness1 | May 11, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Man you people complain about penalties/non penalties way too much. Semin is not going to draw a lot of penalties because he has a reputation of being a diver.

Posted by: SC87 | May 11, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Even a blind ref could not have missed that take-down on Semin! What an outrage, especially after that ridiculous interference call.

Sorry officiating. Same problem as last night with the no-call on the much clearer interference on Boyd Gordon.

Guess we have to pull this one off despite the refs -- or maybe we can hope for a dumb make-up call.

Posted by: hanks1 | May 11, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

I see we are lucky enough to have Paul Devorski, the same SOB which gave the Flyers the powerplay in overtime last year in our playoff game 7 officiating this game. Guess Bettman wants to insure Cindy moves to the next round.

Posted by: Stypaka | May 11, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

This D just takes too many chances. I can appreciate Pothier's hustle in trying to tie up Staal, he anticipated the shot and then took Staal down. The shot never came so it was interference, but at least Pothier competed hard on that play. Poti makes one bad play, one good play, one bad play, another bad play. What the heck was he thinking leaving Jurcina out to dry by stepping up at the blueline when he had no angle on that play?

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Well cant wait til next year when we get younger and better on D. Alzner is a stud who makes NO mistakes, and Carlson, if he is ready or not, is going to be a stud.

Posted by: mikejc80 | May 11, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of missed penalties I didn't know that tripping players after the whistle (Orpik on Semin) is within the rules. Cstanton1 can say all the ridiculous crap he wants (he just enjoys spewing nonsense), but that's a clear penalty in the playoffs or not. Cheap shots after the whistle are not allowed.

One thing I would agree with is that we need to be nastier to their top players.

Posted by: ranndino | May 11, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

you can almost set your clock to how predictable this is now...the entire arena was standing up waiting for the next goal by the pens...pathetic PK strikes again

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Refs are gonna give us every chance to get back in the game, lets see how good our PP is compared to theirs. We have such a hard time setting up a play.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

I don't want you Caps fans to feel bad...but your hockey announcers are just the worst pair of sportscasters I think I have ever heard. The color guy (whoever that is) just never shuts his friggen mouth.

They are just terrible.

Posted by: Stypaka | May 11, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jason2smith | May 11, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Is Poti under contract next year? Or bring Alzner up to replace him? Tom just continuously makes bad decisions at the blue line.

If a Pen punched Greene in the face would he play better?

Posted by: Realness1 | May 11, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

pls take Semin off the ice, we don't need him right now. We need defensive players and forwards willing to seal off the boards and play hard on the halfwall. Everytime the Pens get the puck they're in our zone for 30 seconds at a time.

this team would need 11 goals in this game to win. They have no idea how to defend a lead. Constantly making bad passes and turnovers and leaving players unattended in our crease. This team is all offense no defense

The real question is, when will Boudreau have the balls to play his 4th line? The Pens 4th line wingers have rec'd 3x the amount of ice time in this game. Bruce's 4th line hasn't seen the ice since the 1st pd ended I don't think. In OT you're gonna have to sneak in a shift here and there to spell the rest of the boys.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

What a piss poor officiating effort...sickening!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd respect the Refs more if they would just put on the Penguins jersey. It would reflect their calls.

Posted by: ouy9 | May 11, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

I'll say this, if the Caps are able to pull this out of the fire, it will be despite Green, he is the biggest negative on the ice. It's one thing to be a lightweight on defense, but it's quite another to be lousy on defense, commit turnover after turnover, and not score. And don't insult our intelligence with the new stick crap, how often has he changed sticks in his life?

Think I'm gonna pop a vein. This is excruciating. Let's see which Capital scores in his own net this time.

Poti has been a one man giveaway machine.

I also cannot believe we were given a penalty with 2 min left for stinking Kunitz not being able to hold on to his damn stick.

How I wish that Steckel shot went in at the very end. There was also a play when Fedorov's pass bounced off their D in front, but hit Fleury. They're getting all the damn bounces.

Posted by: ranndino | May 11, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Who are the refs?

Great question. Most important is to figure out how they got paid off -- was it the league or the sucking Pens?

Starting with the non-call on the Semin take-down at the end of the 2nd, this has been way beyond unbelievable.

As I said earlier, if we pull this off it will be despite the refs.

newsflash Semin, its OT, you may want to actually pass the puck the OTHER way now instead of back towards your own goal

Green with the misread in the neutral zone leads to the oddman rush and almost goal. Wow

Its time for Randinno's meds! lol

why are you always talkin about blowin dads anyway? eh?

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

SHOOT THE PUCK!!!! are the Caps trying to impress us with their passing?? SHOOT THE PUCK!!!! SHOOT THE PUCK!!!

Posted by: ouy9 | May 11, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Just once I'd like to see our top line be able to dump the puck in and beat em to the puck and work the boards a little. You'd think over the course of a series even blind luck would let that happen once. Our 3rd line is so methodical, our top lines enter the zone and exit it quickly, there's no offensive zone possession time.

I could use some meds myself, OT in the playoffs is rough on me...

Posted by: oo7 | May 11, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Man, our 3rd line should make more money than any other line. They forecheck, backcheck, hit, play D, play the PK, score critical goals, wear down the opposition. Just a real treat to see. Its the new coming of the Kono-Halpern-Dahlen line if any of you remember. I'm sure Randinno doesn't, he sounds like a newbie fan

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH all the bounces breaks and everything else - MEANS NOTHING AT ALL NOW. It comes down to one game on Wednesday night. LET'S GO CAPS LET'S GO CAPS LET'S GO CAPS.

And we didn't need no stinkin' refs to help us!

Posted by: hanks1 | May 11, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Wow! Game 7 at our place. But what really makes hockey the best game is that after the game is over the combatants shake hands. And that is why hocckey is really the class of of professional sports. So please, regardless of the outcome Wed, lets show our class and not our ass. Please dopn't throw stuff on the ice, instead shower our team with your cheers!

Posted by: fatboy08 | May 11, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

That was one of the biggest wins in Capitals history. Way to go get it guys!

Game 7 is at the VC on Wednesday night. For both team's it's do or die.

What wants it more? I say the Caps do at home!

Posted by: Terptwin | May 11, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Thank you GOD!! i couldn't watch the game because i'm studying for a final but I couldn't help but come here and say how relieved I am that we exorcised the "OT demon" and forced a game 7 =)

Posted by: jogabonito | May 11, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

What can I say? Havent' posted in a while but

that was highway robbery!

But we were do for the bounce to go our way!

What about those calls by the ref at the end?? What the hell!

FINALLY SEMIN WOKE UP. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR HIM TO STAY AWAKE?

MIKE GREEN...i don't know what to say anymore. It was him that couldn't clear on the tieing goal.

BUT WHO CARES NOW! ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN GAME 7!!

Posted by: floms | May 11, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

3rd line starts every period, is on the ice after every goal FOR and Against. They're the heart of this team. Lets hope Bruce doesn't break them up again just to "fund" the other lines.

Posted by: cstanton1 | May 11, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

We should get 2 wins for tonight's game considering we had two teams in black and white against us tonight. Keep the faith. We will overcome. LET'S GO CAPS!!!!!!!!

Posted by: CPortisRun | May 11, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Perfect that it was Stecks. In a series where the Caps have rarely done the little things it takes to win, Steckel has done all that has been asked of him - and then some.

He took a bad penalty in the third that led to the go-ahead goal, but I'd say he more than made up for it.

You want money, you go to the bank. You want goals, you go to the net.

Posted by: JohninMpls | May 11, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Everyone better be cheering for Hershey tomorrow night - theirs has been a mirror series thus far.

Posted by: SavedByZero | May 11, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Good game. Pens outplayed them yet again, but whatever, us fans will get to see this great series go 7 games.

Posted by: SC87 | May 11, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

awesome game despite the playing 5 against 8 (+3 refs) for most of the game. Stecks baby!!!

Posted by: poofter | May 11, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

hey, i think i saw some white towels on the ice after the goal...hmmm...very classless. or perhaps they were just surrendering?

My fellow Cap fans:

For those who remember, I stated here earlier that I am convinced that the Caps lose when I watch. So I purposely (and very painfully) AVIODED watching the entire game.

Take up a collection and send me to Vegas or Atlantic City on Wednesday night.

Lets Go Caps!!!!!

Posted by: TimDz | May 11, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

we beat the pens AND the refs tonight! And its coming home to US!!!!

Posted by: oo7 | May 11, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

for those keepin track, the Bears and Baby Pens are due for a game 7 tomm night. Watch it online at ahl.com. Should be a great game to watch..

Also the Stingrays are up 2-0 in the 3rd round of their playoff season in the ECHL. My buddy works as an usher there, he just texted me and said they dominated the game. The boxscore shows they outshot Cincinnati by 44-19. Caps prospect Max Lacroix with his 5th goal of the playoffs

Steckel and Laich.... two of my favorite. I've seen Ovie do that redirect. I don't think he invented it but Ovie is real good at it. Nice to see others on the team trying. Tight squeeze, upper right corner.

Posted by: snakegriffin | May 11, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

snakegriffin...the Penguins outhsot them 42-24, that's domination

Posted by: SC87 | May 11, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

Wow, just wow. Really was expecting the worst tonight. Despite some atrocious reffing, the Caps pulled out a miracle. It was about time one of those OT bounces went the Caps' way. I guess things even out in the end. (Which means the Pens should get called for a dozen or so penalties Wednesday night. I'll take it!) Ovechkin got some help, Semin breaks out of his mini-slump...great, great win. Finish those bums off Wednesday night!

Posted by: defpotec | May 11, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

uhh, maybe i just don't care enough to find your stupid replies. 3rd line, 3rd line... yeah, they're great, but if not for our star players whom you trash all the time we wouldn't even be in the playoffs. you pretend like you know hockey because you appreciate what our grinders do. i do too, but since you don't appreciate what our stars do (that would be like 80 to 90% of the scoring) you really don't have a clue. if you only enjoy watching grinders play dump and chase hockey and ugly goals why don't you stick to watching the ECHL?
