Well, we've got 'em just where we want 'em now, huh? LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | May 13, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

The only hope we have is that it's the 1st period yet. As always, BB will yell at them at the intermission and only then they will start to play. But so far the D horrible. Just horrible.

Posted by: fnralch | May 13, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

that wily veteran federov takes a dumb ass penalty ..he must have a tee time for early tommorrow

Posted by: wendel2 | May 13, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Might as well play all out now--try to keep the puck and make the hits real rattlers.

Posted by: wocoliz | May 13, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

out shot 16-5 in game 7 at home.....this team is just way too euro..... and please no dumb the refs are screwing us excuses
we flat out suck

Posted by: wendel2 | May 13, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Kudos for the Pens for coming out and doing what they did. THe Caps forgot they're at home. Just sad. Every game 7 so far - they come out flat. Signs are not good - Ovie can't bury the breakaway and they let a 4th liner bury a goal. Not good at all. Just flat out horrible.

THe Pens outworked them and created penalties. The Caps should take notes.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 13, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

it's not the refs, wendel, it's green's sticks. If only easton had continued the stealth....

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Lets go CAPS , its not over yet. If they scored 2 goals in one period we can as well.

Posted by: probking | May 13, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Pens so far are working harder, and creating more chances in the O zone. Don't discount Gonch's presence, either! GO PENS!

Posted by: BrentwoodBoy | May 13, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

This is possibly the worst way you can start a game 7, let alone any game. I don't think they did a single right. It's like every issue they've had throughout the series reared it ugly head in one period - D playing like swiss cheese, bad passes, can't clear the puck, soft goal and miss a great scoring chance. Varly is the only thing that kept that period from being 4 or 5-0. Incredible.

If they don't get their head out of their a@@es in the next two period, they're not only going to lose but get embarrassed at home.

At least they have 40 minuted to get it together.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 13, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

We always seem to come out flat in the first... theres still two periods, next one will be important if we want a turn around.

Getting another beer and trying to keep my cool.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 13, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

2-0? Gotta switch something up. For my part I'm changing clothes and switching to vodka.

Posted by: graham29 | May 13, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Caps defensemen stink. Morrisonn, Green
Poti, and Jurcina couldn't clear the defensive zone if their lives depended on it. Penguins look like they are on the power play when its 5 x 5! A couple strong veteran stay at home defensemen need to be a priority for George McPhee this offseason.

Posted by: bdschwartz71 | May 13, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

i dont know what to change! only have beer and wine. wine and hockey doesnt seem right. just going to keep my cool, i still believe. Bruce, work your magic! Ovie, wake everyone up! Everyone else, WAKE UP AND STOP TURNING OVER THE PUCK!

if the pens get the next goal, watch the crowd turn on the Caps

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

oh... AND GET THE FREAKIN PUCK IN THE FREAKIN GOAL.

i'm done now.

Posted by: mrszilla | May 13, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

maybe Ovechkin can help the Caps by taking out Green or Poti with a knee shot

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

the pens are absolutely embarassing the caps..crosby is kicking ov's ass.. .and the caps simply suck...gmgm better get his phone charged up and get rid of half these useless floaters

Posted by: wendel2 | May 13, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

wendel2...regarding Crosby showing up Ovie, it's clear now: Crosby has a superior supporting caste.

It's been a good run this year. The Caps were able to shake off the first-round game 7 monkey that hopped on their backs last year. But they've been exposed at times this series...most horribly tonight. The Caps need to make some changes after the season, starting in defense.

Posted by: JCB9 | May 13, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Caps just can't beat the Pens in the playoffs.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

5-0 is great so far.

You lose 5-0 and:

It's hard to blame the refs.
It's hard to blame it on "unlucky bounces".
It's hard to blame it on a league conspiracy.
It's hard to blame it on your stick.

You've just got to man up and admit the Pens are the better team.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I will never understand how the caps can have a guy on the bench with fresh legs (Brashear) who can play a physical style unlike any player on our team... I blame Boudreau for keeping status quo when we were outplayed every game this series except MAYBE game 6 after period 1. Brashear could of added the toughness our team needed instead were playing rookies... rediculous.

Posted by: tony325 | May 13, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

well, the caps have had no answer for the Pens forecheck in the first 6 gmaes and they sure don't have one tonight. Looking back, Varly was the only reason this series went to 7. You can't just keep winning games by outscoring the opposition, at some point you need some defense.

All in all disappointing end but still a good season. The team has a bright future if some moves are made.

Posted by: Moose33 | May 13, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Tough way to end the season. What an embarrassment for the District and the fans. They deserved better than this. If it was not for Varly this team would have been finished two weeks ago. Too many pansies. Must add defense and grit. Ovie can not do it all.

He could of made a difference if they put him on the checking line & put some hits on crosby & Malkin, since everyone else is scared to... he changed the Rangers series, did you see how the team played when he returned from injury in that series before the suspension?

Posted by: tony325 | May 13, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Poti, see ya, Mo, see ya, pothier, see ya, Flash, see ya. Tighten up the defense, make a trade or two for more hard working players willing to pay the price. Toe drags are not going to work in the playoffs. With the way the Pens have dominated, there was chance for a blow out, I didn't think it would be in game 7, but they were overwhelmed the whole series. Varly and Ovie should be enough to build around. Alzner and Carlson down the road will solidify the D. I would have rather had them lose game 6 in ot, than get blown out in game 7.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | May 13, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Why is OV and Semin not playing tonight????? Healthy Scratch ? Coach's Decision? Oh ya I forgot Heartless Russians!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | May 13, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Hey Pens fan. Just because they out played the Caps in this game 7 doesnt meant the terrible officiating (which everyone in the world can see but blind Pens fans) and lucky goals doesnt leave a huge question mark on who is the better team. It is game 7 after all dummy.

Then again what do I expect from fans that respect players like Crosby.

It would have been awesome if they had shown up.

Things to work on this summer -

Puck control. It's a lot easier to score when you're not handing them the puck on a silver platter 2/3rds of the time, especially when you're not taking it away from them.

Discipline. The lazy and immature penalties have got to stop.

Accuracy. I cannot even begin to calculate how much of a dominant team the Caps would be if 55-60% of their shots were on net instead of over it.

Neutral zone. They need to figure out how to clog it up and preserve leads. The Pens know how to. The Caps don't. That has made a world of difference in this series.

Hope is dwindling, but there still a little left...

Posted by: ModestProposal | May 13, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Finally caught up to them. Being a life-long Bruins fan, these guys do not play defense like the Bruins, more like the early 80's Oilers.

Ahhhhhhh, complaints about "terrible officiating": the badge which infallibly identifies the fan of a losing team.

1. Partisan eyes see wrongs that don't exist.

2. Bad calls are part of any game refereed by human beings. They tend to even out over time (absent some crackpot conspiracy theory).

3. To be great, as opposed to "flash in the pan good", a team must be good enough to overcome one, possibly two egregiously bad calls at crucial points a crucial game.

Here's to two great towns - DC, and the 'burgh.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | May 13, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Caps should do like the Nordiques (Avalanche) did with Lindros back in the early 90s: trade Ovechkin and get 6 or 8 really good NHL players in return. Avalanche went on to win multiple cups because of that trade. Philly got nothing. It's a team game and one great winger is never going to be enough to build a team around.

Caps fans! We've been outplayed starting with game 3!
Out-forechecked, our forwards aren't getting back out defense. You can't blame Poti, Morrison, and Pothier if they're defending 2-1's and 3-2's all night. Our forwards haven't played much defense this series. Varly kept us in this series. Why are there always 5 Pens in the neutral zone! BTW, the officials aren't the ones taking stupid slashing penalties. Pens fans, here's hoping Boston takes you apart!

Posted by: cabterp | May 13, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I am tired of 35 years of the same !!!!! We fans have to endure the same crap all year after our teams in DC choke once again. The players don't care, they still get paid. I am tired of being embarassed year after year. Abe and Ted deserve better and so do the people in this area. Alex if you want a Stanley Cup ask for a trade, it won't happen here.

Game 7 is when the true stars shine. Ovie, as previously stated, has an inferior supporting cast which is detrimental to his performance. Semin, where the hell have you been? Green? Add number 25 to the must go list as well. He is another nonaggressive player. There are too many of these types on this team to make it effective come playoff time. GMGM, thanks for not adding a d-man at the deadline. Did not see the need huh?

Henrik Lundqvist was correct in stating there is no secret to winning in the playoffs. You must be committed to crashing the net offensively, sacrificing your body defensively (shot blocking), and employing a defensive scheme that limits quality chances.

I'll admit if this team can figure that out they will challenge the Bruins/Pens for Conference supremacy for as long as they keep the franchise under contract.

Posted by: truetradition1946-1970 | May 13, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Caps need some REAL defencemen and some forwards with some grit that will actually sit in front of the net.
90% of the Penguins goals in this series have all been garbage goals.

If by garbage goals you mean goals that come from hard work and positioning in front of the net, you are absolutely right. Caps are nothing but a bunch of prima donnas that don't want to take the hits to score the goals. If pretty outside slap shots ever win a Cup, the Caps are in great shape. Otherwise.....

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | May 13, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Congrats to the Pittsburgh Penguins. I hate that team with a passion but simply put - they were the better team and took care of business tonight. The Caps defense hung in there but tonight it caught up with them again and they flirted with fire all series being outshot badly in every game. It's not about an adjustment that needed to be made - it's about the fact this team needs some new defenders. It's just a part of the building process with this team. They improve the defense they will only get better.

It hurts that Semin and Green disappeared this series. There are many intangibles but unfortunately it was Game 7 when things would catch up.

It was another successful year - the team got another round deeper but can be even better. Again it's patience. LIke others - I still think the best years of this team is two years away. If you can't have patience - then go find another sport.

This year was certainly fun to watch. You keep growing and continue to improve.

Thank you Caps for another amazing season. Yes I know many others are looking at tonight as bitter disappointment. You gave it a good run but you're stil young - you learn and your a year more mature and better. It's up to the front office to address the defensive deficiencies. Welcome to the NHL Simeon Varlamov. Let your career begin.

Some of you so called fans are pathetic. This team is so much better and has a much better future than the disapointments of the past. THis is painful, but it is a step in the process. Like the early Jordan Bulls. it takes time. It is juts really painful because it is the Pens.

Posted by: Satts | May 13, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Hi rachel where have you been ??? lots of reg. missing in action tonight OV , SEMIN , and YOU!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | May 13, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

I do find it very hard to believe that the Pens had no penalties. Talk about the NHL wanting it to go seven and then the Pens to win it. Now next year they'll meet in the EC Finals. I can see it now.

Bettman needs to go, (Colon) Campbell needs to go. No wonder this league is still the fourth best.

Great series.

Posted by: akus2 | May 13, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

I've been a Caps fan for 25 years and I've suffered thru many heartbeaking losses by the team. However I don't feel that bad after this loss because the better team won the series. And the future is bright for this team. They have a good core group of young stars already. All McPhee has to do is find a few better role players especially behind the blue line. Most teams would love to have these problems. If McPhee can't do it, he should go.

Why'd they let that tool SC1907 back on here??? Someone please give me a quick recap why Theo was in net? Did Varly get hurt?

@SC1907: The Capitals lose and yet surprisingly, you're still a tool. Fancy that! S*ck it, SC1907. Worthless waste of space....

I guess we have to thank the Caps for a great season and getting that far, but victory seemed so close I could taste it. I was sure they would win tonight--what with their pattern of playing well under pressure and all. I never saw this disaster coming and I am heartbroken.

Posted by: caraveli | May 13, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

A very disappointing end to what was an exciting and encouraging season. Lots to work on and personnel moves to think about, but next year should be even better. Thank you, Caps!

Caps exposed. Without stellar goaltending this team isn't playoff worthy. Bad defense, no grit. Ovie can't do it all.
GMGM needs to go.

Posted by: mdmtnbiker | May 13, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Fans, ya gotta give Dan the 'Guins tons of credit for a very, very good series v. a good Caps team. One thing we can all agree on, it was a classic series, and good for hockey in general. Ovie v CrosbY? what more could any decent hockey fan want???!!!

Posted by: BrentwoodBoy | May 13, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

If anybody had any lingering hope for Theo, they should be hopeless now. He was his usual nervous, uneven self and this could have been the opportunity to show us that he was wrongly benched. He is history.

Posted by: caraveli | May 13, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

jwash4472...can't believe you are dumb enough to blame the refs and the NHL. If the NHL wanted the Pens to win, how did we get a two game lead? Amazing how they could orchestrate weird bounces off sticks in OT to keep the Pens in it. You are a brainless homer who is too stupid to see that the Caps got outplayed by a team with more heart. Pathetic -- both you and the team's effort.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Satts, you're welcome. I don't understand these morons who keep jumping on Green and Varly tonight. Sure he had a bad game but he had done more than enough to convince me that he's the future of this team along with OV. And as far as Green I wouldn't be surprised at all if we found out later that he had some sort of leg injury because the mobility just isn't there.

There's no shame in losing a game 7 in a playoff, if you ask me.

Getting into playoff, good. Getting to game 7, better.

Anyhow, it's unnatural to play hockey in DC's climate ;)

joek443- Disappointing, but part of the process. We are buildong something here. I don't think it is lack of effort. Rather, the talent we have often over-shadows some severe defiencies. Time and some samrt acquisitions will make a difference in the future.

Posted by: Satts | May 13, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Hard to say if Varly is the future of the team. Many goaltenders have had a great first 20 games and then proven to be a flash in the pan. He gave up 4 or more goals in the last 4 games of the series and 3 goals in two others. He might be a great one, but better wait till after a full season to get a better feel.

@StanleyCup1907
I'm not sure in the beginning why you're the bitter one acting like a sore loser. You call people losers on here but all you do is constantly bash the Caps and players and posters.

Whose your team? Who do you like? Or are you in just a bandwagon fan? You never come on and give this team any credit even when they were playing well this year. I don't know what your bitterness with Ovie or Semin is about.

I'm an honest hockey fan and diehard Caps fan. I'll be honest it would be nice to see Ovechkin play more defense at times rather than gliding around on shifts. Semin he's out of control at times and underestimates his own talent. If he could just settle down and do his thing he could be special. But the things you say - give me a break. If anyone has bitterness or sore loser issues on here its you.

If you want your posts or comments to actually mean something try giving credit where credit is due at times. To only come on here and criticize when the team does bad???? Get real. Grow up. Otherwise come down to Florida and I'd be happy to have a nice hockey debate with you otherwise go back to your armchair and stay silent.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | May 13, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Congratulations to the Pens. You were the better team by far. We had two players that almost equalized it. Hopefully, we will address that problem in the offseason. In the meantime, eat sh1t and die.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 13, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Satts, I comletely agree. For years the Caps have always been known for having one of the best group of defensemen in the NHL. This current team is the complete opposite. They need at least two more solid blueliners and a center iceman. If you look at the Pens, they need someone like Orpik, Gill and Scuderi.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | May 13, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Better team clearly won ... how can you be outshot by 10 a game and expect to win? Still, a shame to save your worst game of the year for last, at home no less. Still, as if the point needed remaking, the Caps have the most offensively talented player in the league. But they need at least one more C/F to stick back Ovie's garbage and I'm afraid a couple veteran Ds to provide some experience to hold leads Ovie gives them.

I have to say that I was a liitle suprised by the full arena standing ovation at the end given the rumblings earlier in the game...Pittsburgh is kind of the opposite..we commit to the team during the game but will walk out after without a sound if we lose...

NICE SHOW...WELL DONE!

Posted by: BlackGold | May 13, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

It's time to consider the drastic and trade Ovechkin.

That's what the Avalanche/Nordiques did back in 92 with Lindros. They got Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, two first-round picks and $15 million. They won 2 cups with that group and Philly won nothing. The Caps are never going to win with just Ovie and as long as he's on the team, are never going to have a good enough supporting cast. So bite the bullet, trade Ovie and get all the pieces needed at once. You just can't build around a left winger.

The District's been a growth industry since Abe Lincoln invented the draft and invaded the south. It's nice to see a shrinking town, which made Mr. Lincoln's steel, win a few.

dan comet, you are a friggin' idiot. The problems the Caps have is that they don't have players like Gill, Orpik and Scuderi of the Pens. Lay off the boos, you idiot!!!

Posted by: joek443 | May 13, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

They're still young, people. Settle down. Nobody ever planned for this to be the year they would go all the way. They're better than they were last year, and that's what matters as long as they can keep the progression going. We have our goalie for the future and a solid offense - all we really need is a hard-nosed bastard who will teach these kids how to drive the net and one rock-solid blueliner. There are good years ahead, and cheers to a great season.

Posted by: ModestProposal | May 13, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

The problem with the progression issue is that Ovechkin and Crosby came into the league the same year, Ovechkin is older, and the Pens are still ahead of the Caps on the curve. Yes, the Caps might keep getting better. But if the Pens keep getting better -- and they will -- their core is young too -- the Caps will always be playing catch up.

@joke443

took me a minute to figure out your comment. It's "booze" you friggin' idiot!

My comment stands. The Avalanche made a decision to give up 1 great player and get several almost as great players in return. It worked, so it's not a stupid idea. Will it happen? No. Could it work again? Absolutely.

..and what were they chanting at the end?

Posted by: BlackGold | May 13, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

BlackGold, you're as stupid as dan comet

and his argument is wrong to begin with because the Avalanche didn't win a damn thing will they got a hall of fame goalie, some would argue the best goalie of the modern era in Patrick Roy. Gretky got traded so anyone CAN be traded. However this is business and OV sells tickets. Thank God Leonsis is nowhere as stupid as you people

Posted by: joek443 | May 13, 2009 10:40 PM | Report abuse

@joke443

Yes, I have heard of Patrick Roy. The Avs used components of the Lindros trade to get him, too. Thanks for proving my point. The same trade also helped them get Rob Blake, Ray Bourque, and Alex Tanguay.

it was like the Nordics had a choice. Eric Lindros made it very clear that he was NEVER going to play for them, remember that?

Posted by: joek443 | May 13, 2009 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Different reasons, yes. The reason doesn't impact the result though.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 10:55 PM | Report abuse

dan comet...

super stars do get traded in hockey. If Wayne Gretky can get traded, anyone can. However they don't get traded in their prime and without unique circumstaces. Lindros was never going to play in Quebet and Gretzky wife wanted her hubby to play in the US. Name me one other trade where a super star like OV got traded like you suggest. You know why it doesn't happen. They aren't that STUPID.

Posted by: joek443 | May 13, 2009 10:58 PM | Report abuse

Not disagreeing with you on that. There would be a fan revolt. Sometimes the good of the franchise is bigger than one great player though. I do not believe the Caps will ever win the Cup with Ovechkin.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 11:00 PM | Report abuse

dan comet..

the Caps may or may not win the Cup with OV but it won't be because of him. If they don't win it, it will be because they don't sorround him with good enough players. All they need is good role players like Orpik, Gill and Scuderi of the Pens. If the Caps had those players instead of the Pens, they would have beaten the Pens easily would have gone much further. I never thought this team would go far in the playoffs because of their D. They got exposed and lost to the better team. It's not that complicated, take a chill pill. Losing to the Rangers in 1986 was BRUTAL, this wasn't. They would be NUTS to try to do anything remotely dramatic as you suggest.

Posted by: joek443 | May 13, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Maybe so, but they will never win a cup with Ovechkin because they won't surround him with good role players. They will continue to be a great regular season team, but they will fold like a cheap tent come playoff time.

Posted by: dan_comet | May 13, 2009 11:27 PM | Report abuse

dan comet

LOL how long have you been watching the Caps. I have been watching this team for 25 years and I've seen it all. I have seen ugly "choke" jobs by this team but this wasn't one of them. The Pens are better than the Caps. Anyone can see that after watching this series. The reason it went 7 games is because of Varly and OV, that simple. If McPhee can't find a few role players then HE should definitely GO.
