Live Game 7 Chat: Capitals vs. Rangers

Tonight's chat will begin as soon as the puck drops for this pivotal Game 7 of the Caps' quarterfinal against the New York Rangers at Verizon Center.

I (Lindsay) will be hosting tonight and sharing what I see from the press box . Tarik will also be chiming in every so often, and I'll also try to throw in some chatter from our three -- yes, three -- columnists here tonight (Mike Wise, Tom Boswell and Michael Wilbon).

If you're not near a computer, go to twp.com/sports from your mobile phone and click on "Caps Playoffs Central" to get live game updates, analysis and more. If you're at the game and take any photos with your phone, email them to capsphotos@wpost.com. We'll publish the best one in the photo gallery from tonight's game.

Since when did Michael Wilbon start caring about the Caps? Just wonderin'..

Posted by: rachel216 | April 28, 2009 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Please ask Mr. Wilbon if the Caps are still just a local story?

wow that was close

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 28, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Antropov with Avery and Dubinsky for the first goal. That's one tough line to defend.

Chris Clark already has as many hits on 2 shifts as Brashear has had in the entire series.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 7:27 PM | Report abuse

ok pp lets tie it!

questionable call

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 28, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Rangers came out ready to play, Caps have not so far. Last yr our best games were games 5 and 6, but game 7 we came out flat in the 1st pd.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

YES!!!!!!!!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 28, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

An absolute disgrace of an effort to come out flat in by far the biggest game of the series. THis is it. The game of the season. No guarantees of a next game and you come out with this kind of effort. That's inexcusable. Don't even tell me there is plenty of hockey left. They can't pass - can't get any shots. Thank goodness Varlamov is the only one who showed up - but hey we just scored. Hopefully this is the bounce we need. WE NEED BOUNCES BOUNCES BOUNCES.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 28, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

1-1

lets play some better D guys.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

yeah i don't get why this team has come out with a questionable effort in 2 consecutive game 7s.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 28, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

Caps have been out shot 8-2, luckily only tied 1-1. A total reversal of most of the series. Doesn't bode well for Caps up to this point.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

You appearing to root for the Caps, man.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | April 28, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

chavez ,the longer they can stay close the better . Now lets turn it up for the 2nd period.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 28, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Semin gets assist on Ranger wrong way goal. But I'll take it. Need Caps Cup to wash taste of Skins draft.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 28, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Caps are lucky to be tied after that effort. The Rangers gave us everything they got - and since we're tied that should make you feel pretty good. The Caps can't play any worse and you know they are going to bring it in the 2nd and 3rd. I like our chances.

The cream will rise to the top through 60 minutes.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 28, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

C'mon Caps! It's midnight in Dakar Senegal and if i'm going to stay up another couple hours, i'm hoping to catch your next series in a few days, not a few months!

Posted by: mo_dc | April 28, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Is it just me or our guys not even breaking on loose pucks with any semblance of determination?

It's like someone spiked the water

Posted by: kjm1971 | April 28, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

I'm following the game on the constantly updated scoresheet. Can anyone tell me what the Rangers did to limit the Caps to two shots for the period and none for more than 12 minutes?

Posted by: phillyreader | April 28, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

OK...thinking in a positive manner...

Who do the Caps match up better with in round 2? Pitt or NJ?

Posted by: TimDz | April 28, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

I like Varlamov. Even on the goal scored against him he's like a cat after a laser pointer. Stick poking and slashing, knees and elbows, almost independantly of one another. I'm more used to frozen til the final pose.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin is horrible out there right now, playing a lazy uninspired no contact game. how many turnovers is he going to have?

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

ov is floating

Posted by: wendel2 | April 28, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

It looked like a football game in the first. Backed up in their own territory. Maybe they were geared up for fighting?

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

WE ARE BETTER, BUT STILL BEING OUTPLAYED FOR A GAME 7 AT HOME AGAINST AN INFERIOR TEAM!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 28, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Avery looks like a hockey player out there, giving the Caps fits, the Caps can't even clear their own zone, they're being outskated right now

and ovechkin is still floating around like a cherry picker, way to pick this game ovy

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

their 4th line is making us look pretty stupid right now

our skill forwards decided to leave their work ethic at home.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

A continued absolute disgrace. This team is asleep. They won't wake up. Game 7 on your home ice. Psst - hey guys - did you forget - it's the playoffs. It's not like we've suddenly gone back to the regular season. WAKE THE $*%( UP.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 28, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

we've spent most of this game chasing the Rangers around, and making horrible lazy passes that are easily picked off

our offensive chances are all perimeter shots with no one cutting to the net

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

you guys are right. OV does look pretty much brain dead tonight. most of the rest of the team does too. horrible, sloppy effort all around except for varlamov.

Posted by: brian1va1 | April 28, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

I don't mind OV floating a bit. It seems like he has 3 modes. Skate around in circles and knock every opp. player on their respective rears. (no offense) Floating and looking(like a shark). And that third gear where he's red lining his motor. As cool as it is to see him hit people, it seems to distract offensively.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

what was ovy doing on that entire shift? he just stood in one place without helping his teammates out defensively

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

That whole arena is not red. It's blood. The Rangers are sharks and they smell the blood. Unbelievable. I'm just awaiting a Rangers goal. Please let me be dead wrong.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 28, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

no traffic in front no pressure clark looks ready

Posted by: wendel2 | April 28, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

A lot of bouncing pucks out there...bad ice tonight?

Posted by: TimDz | April 28, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

perfect example - our 3rd line has a great shift around the net and then Ovechkin and Fedorov p_ss the puck away. Our skill players suck tonight. The best chances are by guys like Bradley and Steckel

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

another guy who looks like he's dogging it is Mike Green, thats 3 turnovers in 3 shifts straight

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

how can andropov look better that ov?

Posted by: wendel2 | April 28, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

except for about 5 seconds in game 6, mike green has sucked the whole series

Posted by: brian1va1 | April 28, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

yeah, mike green has sucked pretty bad, glad he's showing his true defensive colors, he's not in the same universe as Chara is defensively.

Our checking lines have played well, our top 2 lines have played badly. And the Rangers have been able to roll 4 lines with no problems. Not to mention their best line has been Antropov with Avery and Dubinsky who have given the Caps fits every time they've been out there.

Semin, Ovechkin, Koz, Backstrom have all been bad. Semin got the goal but he's floating around like the rest of them, like they want some cheap goals from the outside

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

how can andropov look better that ov?

Posted by: wendel2 | April 28, 2009 8:33 PM | Report abuse

because he's working his butt off and not cherrypicking or lollygagging on every shift

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

How ironic the best forward so far in this game as far as hustle is Clark of all people. Sure he hasn't played in how many months but where is everyone else??? *crickets* That's what I thought.

Newsflash - an APB has been put out for the Washington Capitals. The team Caps fans are looking for was last seen at Madison Square Garden in NY. Did they even come back on the plane? Hmmm.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 28, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Bradley had an uncontested shot chance with 4 sec. left. and the puck sliped off the end of his stick.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

like i said, this makes it 2 game 7s in a row where they're getting outplayed although in this game the Rangers are really taking it to us. They're faster and more aggressive. Every time we get the puck in our own end we either have to ice it or we end up bottled up for a minute or two.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I can't even believe how bad this game is. We are lucky that it's 1-1. If they don't come out smoking in 3rd period, we didn't deserve to go any further than this. We had all the momentum going in this and look like they are already planning their vacations. Terrible game. The Caps look tired.

Posted by: sasha_206 | April 28, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

20 minutes to get gritty or the next grit we see will be in a sand bunker at the golf course.........what an embarrassing but not completely uncharacteristic lack of effort by our Euros stars............

Posted by: wendel2 | April 28, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

quality scoring chances I'd say we've had 2, they've had about 8. One of these times they're going to muck in a goal where the puck just slips thru all the traffic

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

agreed, our Euros (and Mike Green) have been embarassingly absent for the first 40 mins, and as was stated above if this continues in the 3rd this team does not deserve to advance.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

I'm starting to agree. OV can almost draw defenders to him even if Green is on the charge and they've switched position at times. Right now though, their offensive guys haven't looked cohesive.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Avery could be considered the #1 star so far.How ironic.

Posted by: hotrod2 | April 28, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

So far the difference has been team preparation, the rangers have been prepared the Caps have not. When the Caps have possession of the puck they have to play solo because every Cap has a Ranger on top, the Caps have nowhere to pass. Top that off with the fact that the Rangers seem to be fresher as they apparently have shorter shifts.
Thank God for Varly, he has kept the Caps on this game, but for how long? I am still hoping that BB unite 8-19-28 on the next period, he needs fast people moving.

Here is hoping that my prediction of Caps on 7 becomes real.

Posted by: opita1 | April 28, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Lucky this is tied. Caps being outplayed everywhere. Would love to see time spent in Caps zone.

Posted by: imayaker2 | April 28, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

If you look back that broken glass panel delay was very important. The Caps had just seized the moment and then the game was delayed for over ten minutes and allowed NY back into the game.

This game will be decided by a freak bounce.

Posted by: MKadyman | April 28, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

BB got out coached by Tort through 2. This is evidenced by:

- BB not getting the message across to OV aobut taking on 2 or more guys himself and loosing puck at blue line.

- Our Euro stars not dumping and chasing.

Yes, Euro stars don't like to dump the puck.

Yes, OV likes to cherry pick and take on the entire team himself.

Knowing this, it is the COACHE's responsibility to say look boys, you get tothe blue line, DUMP THE PUCK AND HIT THE D-MAN LIKE HE JUST SLAPPED YO' MAMA.

BB needs to have a 1-on-1 with OV about the bad parts of his game. I love the guy, but the Coach needs to tweak his game.

If we get out coached in the 3rd, we're done and we deserve to be.

Posted by: floms | April 28, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

I'm a Caps fan from day 1 back in 1974 and I've seen this movie too many times.I almost dread watching the 3rd period. Not being pessimistic.Just history has shown that the Caps usually find a way to lose. Please let another chapter begin for the Caps in the playoffs.

Posted by: hotrod2 | April 28, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Czaban needs to get off his high horse about refusing to pronounce Varlamov's name correctly. He and Andy's show helps me get through the evening commute, but his insistence to pronounce the Caps goalie's name the way HE wants is petty and petulant.

Steve, there are better battles to fight, and this is a stupid one.

Posted by: rdpinva | April 28, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

When will this team stop with these stupid stupid stupid touchdown passes. They don't work. They are LOWWWWWWWWWWWW percentage passes and end up with an icing call most of the time.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 28, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

they are playing like ghosts.

Posted by: whughes1 | April 28, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

NY must have a really good penalty kill. The power play has been a strong point pretty much all season for the caps.

Defense and special teams, maybe the Skins are going to make the most of avg. team.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 28, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

They will stop those low perc passes when BB starts coaching. Sometimes I get the feeling he lets his players go on there own thing too often

Posted by: floms | April 28, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Well if we lose it will be two playoff collapses in a row, not to mention that this team took far too many nights off in the last month of this season.

motivation is the responsibility of the head coach and BB definitely will deserve some scrutiny after this latest joke of an effort by the caps.

Posted by: brian1va1 | April 28, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

This looks like the Capitals of past. Would be great if we were trying to win the Russian best Hockey Pass trophy. Have to get the puck on net and work for rebound.

Goals WSH-3 PIT-6
Goals against PIT-17 WSH-19th
5 on 5 ratio: PIT 6 WSH 8th

That one is kind of a big one as they are very evenly offensive teams, but it seems in the playoffs there are less penalties. But we also now have Varlamov in the net, which looks to more than offset, hopefully.

NY was the number one penalty killing unit and the Caps were the 2nd ranked power play team. I forgot the Post had mentioned this till it showed in the playoffs. It was normally a common source of momentum. The next series should hopefully be a chance for Varlimov to shine. If the Caps dominate we'll be singing his praises. But shot totals wont be in the teens.

Have you seen Boston's stats? They are dominate. Period! The top defense and the NHL's 2nd ranked offense. More than that, if you want to compare them with Detroit. 5 on 5 play is a staggering 1.42. Where everyone else is .25 above or below 1 on the ratio of 5-5 F/A.
(I dropped off the Islanders into the AHL where they belonged.)
