LETS GO CAPS

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2009 7:08 PM | Report abuse

I am NERVOUS today. It's just a beginning though... Varly looks as cool before.

GGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOO CAPS!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Dont like the amount of time Rags are spending in the attack zone, most of period played in font of Varlamov

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | April 22, 2009 7:19 PM | Report abuse

bs call against Semin.

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Erskine scores, we're down 0:1...

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

wow hocky gods were with my rangers on that one! Just my 2cents, I thought both calls were borderline, so it's even.

Posted by: rangerfan44 | April 22, 2009 7:39 PM | Report abuse

If we could just get our D-men to stop scoring on Varly we'd be fine. Going back to his last regular season 4 out of the last 6 goals scored on Varly have gone if off Caps D-men.

Posted by: fanohock1 | April 22, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Shoot I missed the first period. No one here?

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 7:54 PM | Report abuse

How did they score?

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

opita, long shot from Mara that was going wide until it hit Erskine and deflected high blocker side over Varly, I believe.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | April 22, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

A lucky goal, shot from the point by Mara off a face-off win, bounced of at least two players before going in. It was initially well wide.

C'mon lads, get it back plus some.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

A shot from the point was going wide and Erskine got his stick blade on it and deflected it over Varly's shoulder. Varly looks pretty good again today though. Had a couple of nice saves, and even snagged a shot through traffic as the horn blew at the end of the period.

Oh, Feds rung the post big time.

Posted by: fanohock1 | April 22, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, the first hit Dubinsky (he got the goal) and Erskine. Green is struggling again. Something is wrong with him.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Thanks everyone. We still got two periods.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

@opita, think we'll be fine but I'd like one in the first 10 of the second. I don't want them to fall back into the five-man D around the goal.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

Next goal wins this game?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

I agree Saintex.
It is going to be interesting if BB makes some changes.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Damn, puck was jumping on Semin...

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

That's bad.

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Too bad. That was Varly's inexperience.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

I have got to see that goal again. Did Valamov try to do a hand pass?

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green needs to get his junk together.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Can I play through?????

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Green????? how about zero for 29

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Where is our hitting game? We were much more physical in game 3

Posted by: floms | April 22, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

We're losing faceoffs 11:21. WHAT'S WRONG TODAY?????

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

I want to see the HOT STICK DANCE!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Henrik is on fire - that glove save on Semin's high wrister was just sick -- thats an NHL goal 98 times out of 100. No way we get anything past him tonight! Bring this back home 1-3.

Posted by: Political_Stratgst | April 22, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

I just a shot of double Scotch. Caps will win this one in overtime.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

in the off season see if the Rangers will trade Avery for Semin...ya never know they might!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

I think we'll get one by him...hopefully before the end of the period and then we've got the third.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

your playing "HOP SCOTCH"???

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

lol. yes that is right.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

wow poor refing

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

if you make repeated stupid comments on a message board, and nobody listens, did you really make them?

you know, i have no desire to go on the habs website and make moronic, repetitive comments about them. i wonder why? oh yeah, i'm not a shut in.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | April 22, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

So maybe now you will listen to me when I tell you this team has no chemistry to win a cup or even a first round and yet the fans of WAS. put up with it ....quick dont say a word and line up for next years season ticket..LOL ONLY IN WAS.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

ahhhh DC are you a little upset?

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Sure putting on the pressure, no results yet but keep it coming. Knock ol' King Henrik about a bit will ya? But don't take any penalties. No shooting from the point -get in close.

Poor ol' SC1907 must be blistering his fingers by now.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I take it back, next goal wins this one!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

lets keep track, is that 31 shots O goals???? Thats got to be a record?

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

It's worrying that Green is already 19 min TOI, Ovi 17:49, Backs 14:42 etc. Hopefully their young legs can still move...

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Poor ol' SC1907 must be blistering his fingers by now.

Katie and Tarik, thanks for the great job reporting this season - a fabulous effort. I look forward to your coverage of the post season and how the Caps will fix the deficiencies that have led them to a one-and-done team for the playoffs.

Enjoy the summer.

Posted by: bucknelldad | April 22, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

I think deflections are what we need, he is stopping everything he sees. Except for the one that hit the cross-bar.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

bye buck can i sent you app for season tickets ..oh by the way the price is going up

Goal scored by Alexander Ovechkin (1)
I thought this was game 4?

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

It's going to take direct shots like that. So Semin, go for the posts.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

our friend avery - gotta get one here!!!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 22, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Wow as much as I hate Avery - he's out of control on that one. That's a bad call but hey - we'll take it. Shows what happens when you build up the wrong kind of reputation in this league.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 22, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

No need to trade for Avery. He is GREAT for the Caps just where he is!

Posted by: LetsGoCaps2 | April 22, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

That was intent to injure. Get the bum out of the game!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Avery is a $#^%$^%$^%, but I will take the penalty.

Posted by: Satts | April 22, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

DING

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

BS penalty.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Not so much music to my ears.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

As I said: the boys are too tired. Ovi's already more than 24 mins...damn.

Posted by: fnralch | April 22, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

I am about to throw up

Posted by: mjwies11 | April 22, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

They sound tired. Come on lets's score. But here we go again. A jillion shots on goal more than the other team and still losing.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

torts is about to lose his mind.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Now I've had it with Avery. That should be a game misconduct on Avery. That's ridiculous. I want a major - blood or no blood.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 22, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Again, No need to trade for Avery. He is GREAT for the Caps just where he is!

Posted by: LetsGoCaps2 | April 22, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I'm afraid that if we don't figure out how to simplify our game, play with greater physical intensity, and take more shots, we aren't going to get out of this series

Posted by: tapscottmm | April 22, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps are bounced in this series, I will root for the winner of the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup regardless of who it is. The only contender in the Eastern Conference I can stand, outside of the Caps, is Boston. Absolutely despise Pitt, Philthy, MY, NJ, and Carolina.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Pwer play. Tie it up, guys. Or are you too tired?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

I'll be at the game Friday. Don't have high expectations for the series as a whole.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: LetsGoCaps2 | April 22, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Probably too tough now. There's always next year.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 22, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

let the whining begin!!!!!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Game much like the first 2. Many shots from the blue line, no one in front for a lot of them. A lot of skating into the zone and then shooting 5 feet in making a goalie's job pretty easy.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | April 22, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

backs against the wall. tough game. no breaks our way.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Gotta win the rest!

Posted by: LetsGoCaps2 | April 22, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse
What a great hockey mind!!!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

hahahahaha! Yeah. All you can do now is cry that the refs don't kick avery out for nothing! LOL ! Told you all that lundqvist would let the caps do much!

Posted by: rangerfan44 | April 22, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

It has nothing to do with breaks and nothing to do with youth. It has everything to do with intensity and desire and will to win in the playoffs. Caps don't have that. Rangers do. Simple as that.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Not over yet. Tough road but we've got time.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

couple more years. this team just isn't good enough.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

PLAYOFF OVER
THATS IT
RANGERS SUCK BUT WE SUCK MORE

Posted by: Tondi | April 22, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

it's just amazing. who would've thought we'd be down 3-1? not one caps fan.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

@CDon, you're an idiot. What desire is missing? Two off the pipe, some strong play. Henrik has been very good in two games and the Rangers have the advantage. You have no idea what you're talking about. Got to your room and read some Boy's Life. Moron.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

This comment has nothing to do with my fandom, but I have no faith in this team to come back in this series. None at all. I was shaken after the first game because it didn't look like the Caps wanted to play playoff hockey. And that theme has continued through three of the four games in this series. It's a shame to see. I love this team. But it's not gonna happen. And I think we could all sense that in some way or another down the stretch of the regular season.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Can't really complain about the Caps effort (except in the first period) and there was no glaring mistakes. Two lucky goals for the Rangers, Henrik played great and we hit like 4 posts.

Now if they didn't play patty-cake in the first game of the series maybe we'd be tied instead of down 3-1.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 22, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Any suggestions on what we need to acquire to do better next year? Yes, time to start thinking about next year. Or should we wait until after Friday's game to plan?

Or is this team under a black cloud?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

i'm gonna have a tough time sleepin' tonight. thanks caps, for nothing. i gave up studying and i get this, now ill probably fail my test.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

@rachel, you can go join CDon. Two peas.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

couple more years. this team just isn't good enough.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse
You know who they have to get rid of ....and very disappointed in BB prep work too many days off . What was he thinking

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

rangerfan44 go eat a richard. you'll get swept in the next round so celebrate while you can

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

CDon is right. Playoff hockey is different than regular season hockey. You can't do all of the fancy dangles when someone is punching you in the mouth. Defense trumps offense in the playoffs.

Posted by: tapscottmm | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

@saintex

Real classy. Your ignorance by making comments like that is overwhelming. No need for namecalling. Act like an adult. But regardless, did you watch the first period? I didn't see the intensity or the desire. I saw it after the Rangers got their second goal. I saw it all through the third. But I didn't see it for half the game. They did NOT match the energy of the Rangers.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Rangers played a good game and limited mistakes...that is playoff hockey especially when you are facing a superior team. Caps played well, they had many good shots...I don't feel like they were all outside ones like the first two games. BAD LUCK and well played by Rangers.

Posted by: Satts | April 22, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

great defense > great offense

great PK > great PP

Posted by: rachel216 | April 22, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

At least we now have good goaltending.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

@CDon, you're still a fool. This is a very strong match-up for the Caps. The Rangers aren't the Flyers and we came back before losing in OT in Game 7 last year. Sell your tickets.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Absolutely right CDon

Posted by: tapscottmm | April 22, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Goalie can't drop the puck like that on the second goal.
You cannot excuse that.

The Caps will NEVER contend under this GM.

Posted by: Cheef | April 22, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

@saintex

I guess you can't have a discussion without calling people names. Then you're worth no one's time. Yeah, Caps game back. Who won that series last year? Give me a break with that comparison.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

GAME OBSERVATIONS:

Slow start - if this team had bothered to start out strong rather than asleep - this game might've turned out differently. The first 20 minutes was a killer. It's ashame that two absolutely garbage goals won this game for that team.

I guess this team enjoys falling down 3-1 in series before trying to mount a comeback.

GREEN: Paging Mr. Green - ohh paging Mr. Green. It would be nice to have you show up in this series. Where has he been? He has been non-existent - all he does is shoot into bodies. For once I'd like to see him fake it.

A hard fought game - but again my hats off to Lundquivst - he came back strong. It's quite a mountain to climb for the Caps.

BIG GUYS: I realize we're a bigger team with guys like Fehr and Steckel but guys like them are slooooowwwwwww. You all can call me crazy - but I'd like to see Aucoin - a scrappy player - start doing to the Rangers what they've been doing to us.

POWER PLAY: They live and die by it and they failed dearly tonight. What can you do plus a couple of goal posts didn't help.

IN THE END: This team came out flat - and despite waking up with urgency - they got back to sloppy play tonight. Varlamov fumbled the puck on the second goal.

Not dead yet but another early exit is looming on the horizon.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 22, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I couldn't watch the entire game but caught the 3rd period, one thing I don't understand at all is why they deviated from what won them the game on monday, I mean all 4 of our goals came as a result of traffic in front, and during that 3rd period I did not see any of our players even try to screen Lundqvist, otherwise im sure the game would have gone to OT.

plus, we got really unlucky with all the shots ringing off the posts.

I still think it's too early to declare that we've lost this series, no doubt I'll be disappointed if we do on Friday.

but I wouldn't count the boys out just yet, remember we came back from being down in our series against Philly last season. so anything is possible.

Posted by: jogabonito | April 22, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

WOW.

We have outplayed the Rangers so much in this series.

The Rangers are a God Awful team with no Lundy.

Lundy was absolutely amazing today. He beat us, not the Rangers.

Posted by: digster1013 | April 22, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

But I didn't see it for half the game. They did NOT match the energy of the Rangers.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Seriously dude, did you watch the game? The Caps threw everything they had at the Rangers. How many shots did the rangers have combined in the second and third periods?

The energy was there (I'll give you that it wasn't fully there in the first) but the rangers lucked out on both goals and never threatened after that.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 22, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

It's not over yet, but if the Caps play like this again, it definitely will be. What a disappointment.

Posted by: ejohnsto | April 22, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

so who blew this game? Avery tried...
OV burnt himself out AVERAGING 1:14 min per shift and played desperately on half a tank late in 3rd one man team syndrome?...our pp was predictable and bad...where is green? another optional skate tommorrow or get some work on offense?

Posted by: wendel2 | April 22, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Poker...why, the rangers played better against Boston this year than the caps, I'm fact they beat them in Boston. I'm not saying the rangers beat the bruins, but many people said caps in 5 or 6, anything can happen, hell, the rangers still need to win one more.

Posted by: rangerfan44 | April 22, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Any suggestions on what we need to acquire to do better next year? Yes, time to start thinking about next year. Or should we wait until after Friday's game to plan?

OK i will tell you one more time Trade semin or send him to minors Get OV under control your a star Not a mascot OV...too many distractions ..Get a goaltender!,,,and while your at it BB should be replaced too.

The PP has to change. BB is draining the energy of its best players by playing them the full two minutes in such a predictable scheme. The 2nd unit scored in the previous game, give them more of a chance.

8-19-28 from the first drop of the puck. Not after they are trailing.

oh and on Varly's performance, I thought he was good except that fumble he had that led to Ranger's 2nd goal. If we could only take that back. =/

What's the Caps record when Katie has these live chats?

Posted by: larryn703 | April 22, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

@Moose

I'll give you half the second and all of the third. Just didn't see the Caps match the Rangers' energy for that half. And frankly, it's not quantity of shots, it's quality. Disappointing, for sure. But their play tonight did match their play from Monday.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Caps in 7....We are a superior team.....now that their backs are to the wall, they will fight for every puck....the Rangettes have no real offensive threat......we've lost 3 1-goal games to them.....we won't lose another......have fun tonight Rangettes - it will be the last win of the playoffs for youse guys....

Posted by: lynchburgvacapsfan | April 22, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

This franchise is CURSED! Can't even beat #7 seed. I beat MTL would have given this team a series....Caps are cursed!

Posted by: 555Mass | April 22, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

It's tough to envision the Caps winning this in seven. All Lundquist has to do is steal one of the remaining three games to seal it for the Rangers, and we've already seen him steal one game this series (Game 2).

@StanleyCup1907

BOY am I glad your not the GM of this team. You clearly know nothing about hockey at all.

Posted by: digster1013 | April 22, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Can this guys win 3 in a row starting Friday? I know the odds are against it.

I wonder if our boys need to practice more. Most of them were just sitting on the bench for the last few days watching practice. While I don't expect a hard practice right after a game, maybe they need to get in and skate a bit.

I'll admit we've had a game every other day but most of the guys have basically not practiced in a while.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

I don't think you can chalk any of this up to luck. You make your own luck by playing hard-nosed ALL game. There are still guys shying away from contact when the Rangers play physical. And, hitting the post isn't bad luck, it's a missed shot. Just because you missed close doesn't change anything.

Posted by: tapscottmm | April 22, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Another OPTIONAL practice tomorrow. Morning skate on friday. Season over friday night. Packing their bags saturday morning.

Team RUSSIA must be thrilled, they are getting OVIE, SEMIN, VARLY, FED and Kozlov by Monday.

Posted by: 555Mass | April 22, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Hitting the post is absolutely bad luck.

It means the goalie is beat on the shot, only to have it hit off the post.

Posted by: digster1013 | April 22, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

There is no curse, no miracles, it is what it is.

I predicted the Caps on 7 thinking that they would lose the last game at MSG, ok, I was wrong they will win the next three games, that is unless BB goes back to the same line combinations that started the game today. He could make it easy by, ONCE AGAIN:

8-19-28 FROM THE START
1ST PP UNIT HAS TO CHANGE.
2ND PP UNIT HAVE TO PLAY MORE.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Digster, that is just not true. Just because you hit the post, does not mean that you have beat the goalie.

Posted by: tapscottmm | April 22, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

CDon,

I agree it the quality and not the quantity but how many quality shots did the rangers have? I'm struggling to name one. Not to simplify it but bad luck + great goaltending = loss. PP being ineffective didnt help either. Avery tried his best to give the game to the Caps.

That being said, it still doesn't excuse them from taking the first period off. That could have been the difference.

You've got to give it the Rangers as well, they lucked out but played solid, especially on the PK

Posted by: 555Mass | April 22, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

If they could win 3 in a row, they would have done it already. The odds aren't good that the Caps won't have one more of these 1 goal games to the negative in the next 3. Unfortunately, their high energy level does not transcend multiple games.

Posted by: ejohnsto | April 22, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Goalie can't drop the puck like that on the second goal.
You cannot excuse that.

The Caps will NEVER contend under this GM.

Posted by: Cheef | April 22, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Stuff like this cracks me up. No clue - none. Frontrunning, sportsradio listener - clearly. You can excuse that when your goalie is 21 years old. And I'll take GMGM over all but maybe 3 other GMs in the league. Cut him loose and he'll be snatched up before you can say "Bartender I'll have another Fresca."

Posted by: AlexVa1 | April 22, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Can somebody tell me why Boyd Gordon is getting to play....I know he is a good guy and tries hard, but man, he spends half the time crawling around on the ice......Keith Aucoin would look mighty nice right now on the 3rd line....

@mischadc83

I agree with the sentiment of your last comment concerning a certain poster.

@555Mass

I feel that way sometimes (our team is cursed). In my worst moments, I wonder the following. Suppose we trade our whole team for the NJ Devils for their whole team. Hey, we're talking approximately even here. Would the new Devils (the former Caps) go deeper in the playoffs than the new Caps (former Devils).

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

If you have rooteds for the CAPS for a long time, you are numbed by April. I have lived and died this for years, but I cannot fault their effort tonight. They gave it everything they had and unfortunately came up short...vcall it running into a hot goaltender oir unlucky. As painful as it is, I don't feel you can fault the effort, the hitting, or the coaching. They played a better game and just lost. And for those who are wailing on Varlamov...what is this his 8th or 10th game? He has carreied us for two games.

Posted by: Satts | April 22, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

superior teams don't go down 3-1 in a series. Better in some areas, not in others. The rangers pk and physical play along with goaltending have been better, and for some reason some of you don't want to see it. If these teams played 4 more games it might be the oposite, unfortunatly there are only 3 left and 2-1 won't be good enough.

It was a great regular season. I thought we had improved.

I know you have to first build the team to win in the regular season so you can make the playoffs. We've got that taken care of. Now to build it to go further.

@CapsFan75,
what is it about this team that just can't win in need of a win?
can't catch a break? Not a single "lucky" goal this series....GOD please give CAPS a break in my life time.

Posted by: 555Mass | April 22, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Look, CDon, you are just making stuff up. First, this team, as configured, has lost exactly one playoff series, in Game 7, in OT. This series isn't over yet you have this "this team is crap and never wins in the playoffs mentality." I had that when I was 12 and my team didn't win a game. My point is this: if you think they suck, if you think there's no effort, if you hate them for losing a game tonight against a goalie that was great, fine. Go away. You make this grand assessment about effort but there was effort galore tonight - what game were you watching? Were they better in the second and third than the first? Yes. You actually put forth nothing of interest yet claim some mighty scouting ability. Let the series run it's course and we'll all see in the end where this team is.

Posted by: saintex | April 22, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Superior teams??? this happens all the time...especially in hockey when a hot goalie can be everything. Look at the Giants beating the Pats, thi stuff happens. Of course, being a NY fan, I am sure you feel that the G-man were vastly superior in every way.

Posted by: Satts | April 22, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

@Satts,

I'm with you. I'm pretty numbed by all the Aprils also. I can't really blame Varlamov since he basically has no margin for error. The Caps always seem to run into hot goalies in the playoffs. Billy Smith (NY Islanders), VanBiesbrooke (Rangers).

I followed the team almost from the beginning and have seen us lose every possible way. Are we the Cubs?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 22, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Rangerfan44,
That is not true. I think most of us here recognize that the Rangers have been superior on Defense play. I am not sure that your PK is that great as much as our PP is so inefficient, albeit, the stats show otherwise. Superior teams do go down 3-1 once in a while, and the series are not over yet. Yes. the odds are against the Caps if you look at the number of games that they have to win, but if you look it at one game at a time, the odds are even.

Posted by: opita1 | April 22, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps were out playing them , then the series would be 3-1 Caps.

Wake up sheeple, GM SUCKS. Look at the Rangers team D, even with no offense they're up 3-1.

Last year we were able to battle back from 3-1 down to Philly - a stronger and offensively much more talented team than the Rangettes........I know it is not a position we want to be in, but this team is capable of winning 3 in a row against NYR....If we were playing BOS or PIT, I'd say it is over, but this is NYR......no more first periods like tonight and we will win the series 4-3...

@saintex

Get your facts straight. I'm not a scout, and I don't portend to be one. I never said the Caps suck, and I never would. I never said I hate the team because I don't. So go ahead and read whatever garbage you want into my comments. I know if you ran this blog, you wouldn't let any critical comment about the Caps be posted. Fine. Live in that world. And yeah, they lost in Game 7 of a series last year. But guess what? They still lost. You don't get points for losing in OT or taking it to a Game 7. Bringing that up is ridiculous.

As for the effort. Sorry, I didn't see it through all of the first and at most half of the second. Didn't seem the match the Rangers' energy. That's my point of view. But I guess because it doesn't gibe with yours, I'm some kind of idiot. So be it.

Posted by: CDon | April 22, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

We've scored 8 goals to the Rangers 7, yet we're down 3-1. Varly has given up 3 goals in 3 games. Who could ask for anything more? That's one less than Jose gave up in game one. Now lets not forget that the Caps know how to come back on the Rangers. Remember being down 4-0 and winning 5-4? We can do it again. Boy, are they going to hate us then.

1st line: Ovie, Backs, & Semin
2nd line: Koz, Feds, & Flash
3rd line: Laich, Nylander, & Aucoin (if they can use him)
4th line: Brads, Brash, & Fehr

I'd sit Gordon...Fehr hasn't done much - I'd move him down to the 4th line to have some kind of offensive punch on that line....

It's not going to be easy but they can do it....One game at a time - we are the better team......with a little traffic in front of Lundquist, pucks will start seeping in.....

Posted by: lynchburgvacapsfan | April 22, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

We still have a glimmer of hope. I know Feds hit the post, and Kozy did somethings, but I just don't see the jump in their legs anymore. This is their last season as Caps.

Flash needs to get off of that line, he messed up a lot or didn't contribute that much.

Mike Green hasn't been good, and we need him to be. In the first few minutes of the game, he and Morrison let a Rag knife right through them. He wasn't even going that fast, they just both misplayed it, going after the puck instead of the body.

Go Caps. Looking forward to Friday.

Posted by: floms | April 22, 2009 10:32 PM | Report abuse

i'm with cheef, the caps will never win with a gm who trades a piece of crap like witt and turns him into a 20yr old goalie who gives up exactly 1 goal per game in his first three playoff games and 8-10th games in the nhl. i'd rather have the guy in pittsburgh who has nine UFA's ready to bolt and probably less than $15M in cap space to fill those holes. should be easy to find nine quality guys to play for about $1.5M/year each.

It is important that we address the makeup of this team at the end of
The season. 3 gritty hardnosed players need to be brought in to offset
The "youthful maturity" of some of the other players. The common goal
Is to win one game at a time and that starts in the first minute of the first playoff game, not in game 3 and in the second period of game 4.

We did nothing at the deadline to re-calibrate the winning mindset. Boston did plenty. The Pens did plenty, the NYR did plenty and the Canes brought back one of their top grit and guts guys. We did nothing when we needed to shake things up a little

Posted by: 555Mass | April 22, 2009 10:57 PM | Report abuse

I'm with diner99. We need to address the make up of the team. Its ok to have finess guys as long as there's a healthy balance of grit that can skate. Right now, we don't have that. Our 3rd and 4th line are way below par.

I also can't believe looking back we didn't get anybody at the tdeadline. This team is very young and immature. The seasoned veterans we have are injured (C. Clark) or don't have enough legs left and/or don't bring the grit factor.

If we had some gritty veteran leadership, they would have said BEFORE GAME 1-

"Alright guys, this is it. We're about to go to war, this isn't a joke, and we can't over look these guys. Your not a rock band, your a hockey team. We have to jump on them quick and go for the jugular. No fooling around. This is all business!!'

But what do we do? We freaken come out with mohawks and red dyed hair!! Is that how to behave before going to battle? Is that a battle face??

mass, i'm not sure what language that first sentence was in, but as a full season ticket holder, i can assure you i've been to verizon center a time or two. but thanks for your concern.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | April 22, 2009 11:01 PM | Report abuse

What do others think about the Wash media and Caps marketing getting into the heads of the players a bit, to the point that maybe these guys start feelking like they really are in a rock band and have to perform a show?

I mean, I was shocked that Greenie had a mohawk, and OVi had red dyed hair to start game 1. I thought last year's playoffs taught them to prepare for war.

The fact that they did that, shows that there's really no veteran leadership in the locker room. Why wasn't Chris Clark in there at least to stop that 5hit?

Mohawk and red dye = war paint? False

Its like this loosey goosey attitude, 'Rock the Red' is a great marketing ploy for the regular season, but the team can't be a rock team in the playoffs.

Posted by: floms | April 22, 2009 11:05 PM | Report abuse

Instead of thinking about red dye, mohawks, where to go after the game, etc, they need to channel that energy into game preperation and focus.

My previous post talked about not having the proper veteran leadership, but I also have to put this on BB.

BB come playoff time needs to coach differently. Loosey goosey attitude, rock band style, even before game 1's puck is dropped! That's crap!! Mike Green was nearly invisible this series, and DC 101 had him on the radio doing the mohawk promotion.

What message does that send to other players in the locker room? Its ok to have fun, but the playoffs is not a joke and need to be taken more seriously.

82 FREAKEN games each player has waited for this.

The give aways and odd man rushes against starting in Game 1 was just completely inexcusable, and shows that we either didn't listen to our coach, or coach didn't get the right message through.

There is really no excuses for where we are in this series.

Its a young team that didn't take this opporutnity seriously, didn't prepare like they were about to go to war, and you see the result.

So in addition to revamping the team in the offseason, the ATTITUDE of the team needs to be revamped as well. And that starts at the top.

Posted by: floms | April 22, 2009 11:15 PM | Report abuse

Floms,

Good points. The marketing of this team is tremendous but it has also created a two headed monster. When you are highlighting guys driving around in Lambo's and having hot tubs dropped onto their condo decks, there is something of a disconnect. I'm not saying you have to go old school but some of these guys are a bit immature. I watch the interviews with Lundquist and he is just 27 and appears to have more experience and composure than anyone on our team.
