The Caps are on fire!

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 20, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

YES!

I was going to say, Semin better make up for missing that open net!

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

OMG, when Semin missed that open net, I had flash backs to ESA TIKONNEN vs. Detroit in '98 finals!! But he made up for it. He had 3 glorious chances early and converted on the 3rd.

Posted by: floms | April 20, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

OH MAN! OV and GREEN what a beutiful combo...so close...

Posted by: floms | April 20, 2009 7:30 PM | Report abuse

They came to play and finally broke through in the first period. Need two more to hammer them. Hammer. Hammer. Hammer.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Nicky is killing them

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Yes! Need 1 more to crush their morale.

GO CAPS!

I'll take Brooks with the penalty. Working hard.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Nice period.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

send your resume around theo ...your services wont be required in washington anymore...maybe u and nyls can go to europe to play

"That live chat is sort of annoying with the amount of people. I like this better.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 7:34 PM"

Completely agree with you, Phil.
Much nicer here.

Now, whee are tose guys who earlier were calling for Semin to be traded?

Too bad he couldn't follow through on that open net. Nice move, but lost control at the end. Could have had a natural hat trick in the first period!

This is the Caps' team we're used to seeing!

Keep up the intensity in the second and third.

Posted by: rw-c | April 20, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Hey! I corrected those typos before I hit submit!

"Where are those guys..."

Posted by: rw-c | April 20, 2009 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom was HUGE on both of those goals, and he also created both of Semin's amazing missed chances as well.

The Forsberg comparison might have some grounding if he keeps hitting like that, eh?

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Let me be a bit of a wise-ass.
Did I mention that BB should put 8-19-28?

Brasheer? oh, well, maybe he wont be on the ice long enough to get us into trouble.

Caps on 7 games. I would like to see Nyls and Clark back in the game.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

I assume it's already been noted but in addition to everything else he's done, that Rangers shot that hit the post was directly related to Backstrom getting his stick in the way.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 20, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

why would anyone want to see nyls

Posted by: wendel2 | April 20, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rockthered21 | April 20, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Great period by the Caps although they seemed to slow down a little towards the end.

The first period is proof that Ovie doesn't need to score goals to be a major factor in games - that's for all the media types who keep pointing out he has no goals.

Let's keep it up

Posted by: Moose33 | April 20, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Good first period - props to Bruce boudreau for sticking with varlamov.

Posted by: snappytommy1 | April 20, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Boyd Gordon isn't the best forward in anything, calm down Locker.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Hey, there is us NOT taking Avery's bait.

CSTANTON1..>WHY?!?!?!?

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Two mins for roughing???? At LEAST a doublee minor - punch by Avery. What a joke of a call.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 20, 2009 8:08 PM | Report abuse

VARLAMOV.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

why would anyone want to see nyls?

Because he is a very good player and way better than Brasheer, among other things.

I see the PP is still the same. Sucks!!!
Predictable!

Great play by OV.

HENRIK.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Just after I typed the last complaint about the PP, BB puts another unit and you can see the difference. The puck moves and Lundqvist is streched out.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

LOL AVERY.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

varlamov = beast

Posted by: Moose33 | April 20, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

@opita, what we wanted was a goalie to steal some games. The O has been great by Semyon is still stealing goals. He's been brilliant.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: madboost35 | April 20, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Semin wanted that hattrick on that 3on1, haha. maybe should've passed.

@TimDz
Henrik and Varlamov have both looked AMAZING this game. It should be like 5-2 us, but both goalies have been phenomenal. We've just been pressing, and pressing, and pressing.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

That was a weak penalty. But what the heck, we'll take it.

GET FLASH OFF THE ICE - GET HIM OFF. HE CAN'T GET THE JOB DONE. He could have so many goals tonight - and he isn't cutting it. GET HIM OFF. He's a waste. I'm done with him. Get him off. He should just undress and head to the bus after this period. Ridiculous. Get on me all you want but these are the playoffs now Flash - no stubbing shots and getting stuffed one on one when its you and the goalie.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 20, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

If MIke Green ever either gets going on the scoresheet or actually plays hockey, the Caps are in good shape. Another difficult game for him.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Wow, calm down there John.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Nice little cheap shot at the end there by Avery...What a gnat...would love to see some tatoo him into the boards before this ends...

Thanks Phil...

I think I heard that Brashear is in the lineup tonight. It was probably said earlier, but I really think his absence has hurt us the first two games...

Posted by: TimDz | April 20, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

@tim. the whole team has been very good tonight but this is also Semyon's greatest effort so far. He's been superb on some great effort, absolutely superb. This has got to be fantastic for his game confidence.

Jonathan6: Were you the guy who was in the seat behind me on Saturday afternoon?

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | April 20, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Well, Flash has also had a rough night but he's crashing and working. I'd like to see him score.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov has stopped at least 2 odd-man breaks.

It should be more but everyone has been hustling. Green and Ovie had really bad turnovers and both recovered nicely so we didn't even have to test Varlamov. All-around great effort so far. He has been far-out challenging. It is safe to say the game Saturday has given him a ton of confidence.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

I hate to bring this up when we're winning but Green is starting to piss me off. Is he trying to break the record for being as non-chalant as possible in a playoff game?

Also, can we have some sense of urgency on these power plays? The refs aren't going to keep giving us these phantom calls.

Other than that, I'm good.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 20, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

"If MIke Green ever either gets going on the scoresheet or actually plays hockey, the Caps are in good shape. Another difficult game for him.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 8:41 PM"

Green drives me crazy with his lackadaisacal or "too cool for school" style. He doesn't hurry back to the puck when it's knocked into the Caps' zone and almost loses it - again.

Posted by: rw-c | April 20, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Fleischmann is a highly intelligent player with great speed. He can score and sees the ice really well. He's having an awful game, yes. He also needs to bulk him for next year but he's going to be a very good player. Detroit drafted him for a reason. They gave him up to get something better.

Anyone want to take up a collection to send me to St. Croix until the Cup is won?

I think the Caps are more in his head than he is in their heads, huh? HA!!!

Posted by: --Boo-- | April 20, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

I don't think that tonight Fleischman (sp?) could score if the Rangers parted like the Red Sea and Lundqvist skated to the bench.

Also, Semin should have passed on that 2 on 1 but no, he had to have his hat-trick. This game should be out of reach by now. I hope it doesn't come back to bite them.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 20, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

I really wonder if there's something wrong with Green that we don't know about. He's struggle the entire series and that's not really like him - Green is a strong player and generally quite into the game. His D has been questionable but I've never thought him lazy. I'd be shocked if there weren't something wrong.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Haha, I pointed this out. You can see the hunger in Semin's play.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Green has recovered when he needed to be. He has done that weird slow skating thing out of our zone before.

Maybe he is getting too much ice time? Getting tired too quick? I dont know. I thought he was fine for the 1st, but he was looking a bit slow there.

Posted by: --Boo-- | April 20, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

If there is something wrong with Green that is making him play the way he does, I would take him out. He's not a factor offensively and his D is average to weak besides a few big hits he's had. The only reason we overlook his defensive liability is that he scores.

The only reason I can think of keeping him in is the threat of his offense and the attention the Rangers have to pay him - but that stretching it at this point in the series.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 20, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

FloridaCapsFan,
From the Semin's interviews that I have read, I doubt very much that he was thinking of the hat trick, this guy does not concern much for personal goals. But you are right a pass would have been better.

Strong finish. Yes.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Wow, is Varlamov making me look good or what? That's what I call a goaltender! Maybe some people will listen a little more to someone who has seen him play last year. Thank god Boudreau made the switch that's been begging to be made all year. All those doubters... he's young, inexperienced... blah, blah... Irrelevant! He's head and shoulders above Theo as a goalie for all the reasons I've always stated. Great goaltending, Varly!

Every bad goal Theo let in deflated our team's confidence like a balloon that was punctured. With every save Varlamov makes our players' confidence rise more and more. Lundqvist has been amazing despite allowing 3, but every time we've needed Varly he's come through. He fights for every puck like his life depends on it. His rebound control, the way he sees the puck through traffic and his reflexes and recovery time are all 10 times better than Theo.

Also, like I said before the game started I had a feeling we were gonna get an early breakthrough and go on to win this game. So far so good.

Lastly, where's that "expert" who suggested trading Semin for a bag of muckers? You've gotta be kidding me. Semin is untouchable! Its amazing to me how little some fans know when it comes to evaluating talent. Suggesting trading Semin is every bit as stupid as suggesting trading Malkin yet I have to read this idiocy on here all the time. As soon as he has one average game people crawl out with this stupid let's trade Semin for a closet on skates crap. The guy averages more points per game than almost anyone in the NHL. He's a world class talent. Elite player! A special player. Yet some people would trade him for a bag of mediocrity. Amazing! Glad you're not our GM because that would be right up there with the dumbest trades ever. Last time I checked hockey games were won by a team that scored more goals and Semin is as good as anyone in the NHL at creating them.

Let's go Caps!!!

Varlamov, at the edge of the crease again. I love it.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

A little tweak to the PP and will be OK for the rest of the series.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Ranndinno, everyone who did not want Varlamov in net had valid points. Not wanting to switch to a rookie who only played 5 NHL games after 1 loss is a perfectly reasonable request. Plus, another huge aspect of this is that if Varlamov bombed then putting Theo in there brings up a sticky situation. There was nothing wrong or illogical with wanting to have not have seen Varlamov. That being said, BB proved his competence as a coach again and made the right decision.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:02 PM |

I actually think we will be fine with our PP against other teams. The Rangers PK Unit is tight and watching other Eastern teams PK units, they are far more porous and don't block nearly as many shots.

Backstrom was increadible on that 2nd goal...deflecting that shot against us on the back check, leads the play out of our zone, fending off their guy with a stiff shoulder, passing to OV, who dishes to Semin.

There is Avery's suspension for the next game.

good job idiot.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Avery just became a marked man for the rest of this series. If he even sees the ice again this game. Brasher needs to take him out. Plain and simple. That's a line you don't cross.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 20, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov is thinking(in russian):

"what the hell is this idiot saying to me?"

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Avery should be expelled from the NHL. Period.

Posted by: TJ91 | April 20, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Drill that D-BAG...even if Varly doesn't understand....and we all KNOW Avery is too freakin' stupid to speak Russian

Posted by: TimDz | April 20, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

I miss the chipmunk voice, as someone called it during the last game, he makes the game exciting even when is on a lull.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Victory... :D

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | April 20, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Someone needs to teach Varly one word the next time Avery starts talking trash: Cross-Dresser...

Posted by: TimDz | April 20, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

WHAT A PASS - POTTTTTTTTIIIIIIII LOVE IT. What a sensational pass.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 20, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

He will probably be suspended for Wednesday's game.

Awesome.

Then he will get drilled AT home on Friday.

:)

Varly...Player of the game....

All together now: DUHHHHHHHHH....

Erskine is taking no crap.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Backy is goinig to be huge in this league. He really is coming into his own by not needing OV on the same line to shine.

Posted by: floms | April 20, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

The announcer guy sounded SO bummed when he said "last minute of play."

haha.

Welcome the NHL playoffs Simeon Varlamov. A great and DISCIPLINED effort tonight. A solid victory. They're back in it. Now let's tie it Wednesday night. Ice Breakers Goal Shakers :)

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 20, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

2nd pp goal by a new unit? OK. BB now, you and I are getting in sync. LOL.

Iron Curtain

Posted by: meagle | April 20, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Varly was great and Nicky was great. Co-MVPs of this game. I can't imagine how good they will be in the years ahead. Backstrom's future it paved with gold.

Posted by: saintex | April 20, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

opita1, you also said Brash should never see ice.

Of course some of our predictions will fall in line. Calm down.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 20, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Well at least that should chase the trolls away for awhile!! :-D

Posted by: --Boo-- | April 20, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Kinda pooey that they chop off the live chat before the ink is even dry on the official scoresheet. Oh well. Caps victory, good stuff. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | April 20, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Now lets get Nyls and Clark, and we will have 4 lines that could score.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

wow, so many regulars avoiding the chat.....I humbly ask why?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 20, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Excellent. Great night. Erskine was awesome and took care of Avery all night. Plus, he didnt get goaded into anything and that showed some wonderful poise. HE's come of age.

Posted by: oo7 | April 20, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Avery did get 2+10 for his late antics, btw.

wtf_e_fehr: Mostly lag; it's like using a walkie talkie that's delayed by a few seconds. Also I like to control the pace of the conversation with my F5 button. Makes it a lot easier to tell what I've read and what's coming up. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | April 20, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Richmondphil,
Well, I never said he wouldn't see ice, I did say I wish he didn't, alas, BB will not listen to me. I still feel the same way, at least while we play the Rangers.

Posted by: opita1 | April 20, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

That's more better!

My keys were:

Offense supporting D more - DONE
Accurate passing - DONE
Traffic in front - DONE
Get goalie moving - DONE

Result is a win.

Congrats Varly! Very well done!

Posted by: Greg S. | April 20, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Solid win by the Caps. Varly is incredible. Not only does he stop shots he can see, he stops shots he can't see.

They have to keep up this intensity because the Rangers will come out playing on Wednesday.

Backs is unbelievable. Semin is a force when he wants to be. Erskine & Pothier (actually the whole D) played really well.

Oh yeah, Avery is a little b@tch

this is odd, i just found this on the hershey, pa news paper web site:

for to rent. apartmentzy for subleases to new persons. no longer needs. includes a nicy set of brown pads for da goalies. low rubles per month. current tennant no come back, ever.

Outstanding collective effort from the Caps. OV didn't even score and we smoked them. Varly is the bomb! He has played outstanding. Regardless of how he plays the rest of the playoffs he is a legit NHL goalie. Needless to say this is no longer a position of weekness. Thanks Theo for blowing game 1.

Congrats everyone!!! Great win!

Just as I predicted before the game. Just had this weird feeling that somehow is right most of the time. Like the whole game played in my head before it happened. That same feeling tells me now we're gonna steam roll the Rangers now right out of this series.

I posted a short message here before the game, but here's an excerpt of my GTalk convo with my friend who's a Rangers fan who was saying that he might not have a chance to watch the game because he's stuck at work (and since he lives in LA now the game started at 4pm local time). This is from before the game started at around 1:20pm EST today:

ranndino: in any case, caps will win tonight so u won't be missing much
i have this gut feeling
we'll break thru henrik and once we do we'll be on fire again
and varly is gonna stop what he should and a few he shouldn't

BTW, anymore Varly doubters? He's our Steve Mason, baby! What a monster game! The way he fought for every puck even when it looked like he had no chance... and the most impressive is how he somehow got every puck that went through a forest of players in front of him. Somehow those seem to always squeak through Theo. Those to me were the best saves. Varly managed to see the shots and adjust, even when they were tipped. And the rebounds, when he gave them up were all hard and far away from the net, mostly to the boards, not a foot in front like with Theo. Great goaltending!

I just get a whole different feeling watching Varly play as opposed to Theo. I just know that if he has a chance at all he'll save it. With Theo I'm never really sure. Neither is he and neither are the Caps players. We've got a goalie now! Henrik played amazing again today and yet we won easily because Varly matched his level. Like I've said after game 1 if Varly played in that one we would have won easily. The games were actually very similar. The difference is that Varlamov made the saves for us and Theo didn't. In fact, I'd argue that the Rangers had many more tough shots tonight than in game 1.
