Live Game Chat: Capitals vs. Rangers

Update from Tarik: Backup goaltender Simeon Varlamov came out onto the ice first just now for warmups. Usually, when a goalie comes out first, it means he's the starter. It's a gutsy move by a second-year coach.

The Post's Katie Carrera is here at Verizon Center and will chat live as soon as the puck drops for Game 2 of the Caps' quarterfinal against the New York Rangers.

If you're not near a computer, go to twp.com/sports from your mobile phone and click on "Caps Playoffs Central" to get live game updates and analysis, plus polls, trivia and press box photos from Tarik.

Does anyone know the Caps record is on NBC and/or afternoon games?

-------------------
Your question made me curious so I went back through this season's schedule. In games starting at 3:00 or earlier:
6 wins--2 losses--1 shootout loss

I felt as though my comments we unnecessarily removed by the moderator last time. I hope that doesnt continue, and again I ask...

If you didnt have the chat setup, we would post in the blog comments section, which is not moderated like the chat. So whats the deal? How about loosening up?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 18, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

@WTF: We've loosened up, trust us. Just avoid George Carlin's words and you'll be fine.

Posted by: Lindsay Applebaum | April 18, 2009 12:28 PM | Report abuse

Wow, so Varlamov... Good luck, Iron Curtain!

Posted by: fnralch | April 18, 2009 12:50 PM | Report abuse

I am not familiar enough with George Carlins (RIP) work to quote him. I assume you are drawing a connection to him through my comment about Schultz being on suicide watch? Seems like a harmless enough comment, but it was indeed moderated.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 18, 2009 12:53 PM | Report abuse

Man, either more mind games, or Varly's really in. Tough choice, good luck if he's in!

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 12:53 PM | Report abuse

Ooog, I don't have a good feeling about Varly in goal, or what it does to Jose's confidence... Prove me wrong Varly!!!

Posted by: isaacc7 | April 18, 2009 1:02 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov?!?!?!?!?!

I am completely scared right now.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 1:03 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr that you didn't get that reference just kinda saddens me, and makes me feel old.

Posted by: doncosmic | April 18, 2009 1:04 PM | Report abuse

If anyone is like me and cannot stand NBC's NHL coverage or their lame announcers, tune your FM radio to 106.7 FM and mute the volume on your TV.

Posted by: Digitalman08 | April 18, 2009 1:06 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr:
i believe the carlin reference was to the '7 dirty words' he used in his routine.
sounds like your being asked to wash your fingers out with soap. do you write to your mother with those fingers? JK :)

Digitalman08:
all i get is static on 106.7 here in AZ. i might mute anyway

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 18, 2009 1:09 PM | Report abuse

Thanks tess2201.

Posted by: akus2 | April 18, 2009 1:11 PM | Report abuse

sinking feeling...stomach...won't go away...

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Capt_Kirk_in_AZ:

You can get it on the internet. Even with the 15 second delay, it's worth it. NBC is that bad so I've done it before.

Posted by: Digitalman08 | April 18, 2009 1:13 PM | Report abuse

BB will either be a genius if they win or an idiot if they lose.

I am nervous!

Posted by: adamkatzen | April 18, 2009 1:14 PM | Report abuse

Digitalman08,
I think the NBC play-by-play guy is huge improvement over what we regularly get here in Washington. I find he is a guy who makes the game exciting even when it isn't, while Joe B. is great if you want to know everything that is not related to the game.

But, hey, we all have our likes and dislikes.

Go Caps.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

I'm about to throw-up.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

BB has a bigger set than i thought - can't believe he made the switch. good thing it his team and my opinion doesn't count. either way - gotta have a win no matter who is in net

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 18, 2009 1:19 PM | Report abuse

richmond

This is a great move. Practically any kind of goaltending will get us past the rangers with the exception of last game. We need better tending in the later rounds so get the kids some experience now. If he does great then all the better. If he fails Theo knows he's on a short leash and he'll want to not lose the job again. I think a very slick move.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 18, 2009 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Re 15 second delay - if you have a DVR you can pause 15 sec and restart to come pretty close to syncing up.

Posted by: grackle5 | April 18, 2009 1:20 PM | Report abuse

richmondphil,

Get a grip.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 18, 2009 1:20 PM | Report abuse

bad ice already - the puck hasn't even dropped yet. hope none of the D loses an edge an ends up on their butts

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 18, 2009 1:20 PM | Report abuse

I want Varlamov to steal this game as much as anyone else, but this move does not sit well with me.

It will all go away when the puck drops.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 1:22 PM | Report abuse

I can't figure out why people like Mike Emerick. I'll take Joe B anyday over Mike E. At least he's played the game before albeit nowhere near the NHL level.

Posted by: Digitalman08 | April 18, 2009 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Glad to see both teams come out the gate with intensity like the 1st game. Hope the Caps maintain that this time through 60.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Digitalman08,
here is One of my reason:
So far he has only talk about the game.
Had we had Joe, we would had know about the beer joints, the great times he had with Locker, whose mother makes the best cakes, etc.

letting Naslund walk into the slot again.....

Did they learn anything?

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 1:39 PM | Report abuse

our PK stinks. they won't survive another one.

You do not let guys just walk into the slot and take a shot, while you are backing up and screening the goalie.

has the third line played yet?

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, it has.

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Torts and Avery have apparently taught the rest of the Rags to dive

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | April 18, 2009 1:56 PM | Report abuse

I was going to say that he must've taken lessons from Dive-insky.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Torts have prepared his team well. They are all over the Caps. But there is plenty of time on this game.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Wow, people like the NBC announcers? They're the worst.

Posted by: FancyDan | April 18, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

The difference so far, in my eyes, is Green getting caught way up in Alaska - what the hell was he doing there? - then a bad decision by OV, completed by Kozlov being outplayed in Defense. The two on one was well played by the Rangers, great pass for a wide open shot. Not chance for Varly.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:13 PM | Report abuse

you're kidding me...

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 2:17 PM | Report abuse

Avery's shot deflected off Tom Poti. Luckily, Varlamov was sharp.

I hate Poti.

No I am not kidding? why?

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

No, I said that in reference to Kozlov's second penalty...

Oh.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Caps are going to have lift the puck, Rangers goalie is a contortionist, he has the lower portion cover from pole to pole. WOW. How can he bend those legs that way?

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

He can stay in the butterfly because he also stays back and covers a lot of net on his knees.

I hate him right now.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 2:36 PM | Report abuse

you got to be kidding.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

These are some gawd awful penalty calls.

Posted by: snakegriffin | April 18, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

I agree with the crowd chant on the penalty. That was a Don Khoharski call.

Have to win this game. No way were beating Lundquist of 4 out of 5

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | April 18, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

What was the chant?

and FINALLY a powerplay for the Caps. Gotta make it count.

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

all of our shots either hit glass or bodies. this is dumb.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 2:50 PM | Report abuse

I heard it as BS

Posted by: jg284481-5-37 | April 18, 2009 2:52 PM | Report abuse

I don't know what to say. Caps are playing well but the Rangers are playing a great defensive game, they are shadowing the Caps tight, and are covering every Caps passing lane. Torts have done a great job with them.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

It's time for BB to change lines. Kozlov Semin. This seems to be the only way to disrupt Rags' effective defensive plays.

Posted by: fnralch | April 18, 2009 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Meant Kozlov Semin.

Posted by: fnralch | April 18, 2009 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Whoever posted the comment about the announcers, I'm a Rangers fan and I find them equally atrocious. The ex-Islander Milbury has never had a positive thing to say about the Rangers. Emrick is ok, but sounds like an excited chipmonk.

Posted by: burp2 | April 18, 2009 3:04 PM | Report abuse

"Most important period of the Capitals' season." Someone on the radio said that, and I'd have to agree. This is it, thus far anyways.

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 3:05 PM | Report abuse

As my name says I am a rangers fan. I will say this. The refs have been brutal, maybe 1 call each way should have been made. It's killing the game, and honestly I havnt seen any games this years playoffs reffed well. As a fan I would rather lose a well reffed game with hard battles than win one because the refs screw up the entire game.

Posted by: rangerfan44 | April 18, 2009 3:07 PM | Report abuse

Rangers have our game plan down. We need to do something. Move players around, something.

Send guys out there to crash the net.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 3:07 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching the game with a fellow Rangers fan, and we both agree the reffing in both games have been pretty horrible.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 3:07 PM | Report abuse

saved by the quick whistle.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 3:11 PM | Report abuse

To the guy who says that the announcers have nothing positive to say about the rangers, did you hear him say:
"That was a great play by Avery" and nothing about the equally or greater play by Varlamov?

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 3:13 PM | Report abuse

He only said Millbury has nothing nice to say. They've been given Rangers a lot of love.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 3:15 PM | Report abuse

YES!

THIS IS IT!

SCORE HERE

Posted by: richmondphil | April 18, 2009 3:17 PM | Report abuse

free to disagree, I guess. i'd rather have anyone other than milbury analyzing a rangers game.

Posted by: burp2 | April 18, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

If Brashear can't go this series, sneak C. Simon out there. Gawd do we need some traffic and enforcement in front of that brick wall in the worst way.

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 18, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Bruce thinks he's so smart with his lineups. He's getting outcoached and his fancy offense is getting shut down in a humiliating manner. This sucks to watch

Posted by: maven1918 | April 18, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

I'd rather this team go down fighting than skate around like a buncha pansies !

Posted by: maven1918 | April 18, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Well great. We can't get anything going, and now we have to kill a Rangers powerplay.

You can hear the let's go Rangers chants on the radio. Painful.

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, I didn't read it well.
I find these guys fair, and you are right about the chimpmonk voice, but he does make it game interesting and sticks to the action on the ice instead of non-hockey stuff.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Semin? Really?

Posted by: snakegriffin | April 18, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Ted if you're reading this, please get us a real hockey team who actually wants to win a playoff series. All I see is a team who is going through the motions.

Posted by: maven1918 | April 18, 2009 3:29 PM | Report abuse

8-19-28 I guess BB is going for it.
If the caps tie this game, it is going to be one of the longest games played - no shootouts.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 3:30 PM | Report abuse

lot of quick whistles by the refs...

Posted by: fnralch | April 18, 2009 3:39 PM | Report abuse

0 for 2...

Wow.

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

brilliant win for the rangers. very tight defensive game. lundquist was sharp. caps are going to have to get bodies in front of the net. they're playing too fancy a game.

Posted by: burp2 | April 18, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

My two cents:

I enjoyed the game, I didn't like it that we lost but it was a well played game and credit has to be given to the Rangers defensive play. It all came down to one bad play, it happens. I think the Caps will win the series if they with the intensity they played on the last period. I think BB should play 8-19-28 as a line, with the Rangers you don't need to distribute your power, you need to have a least one line that can score.

Posted by: opita1 | April 18, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Good performance from Varlamov it would seem. Poti's misplaying of the 2 on 1 can't be pinned on Varly, looks like the future is now in net. If only the rest of the team would wake up and play with some passion. This isn't the regular season anymore.

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | April 18, 2009 3:47 PM | Report abuse

We mights as well play green at forward. That is where he is playing anyway. He does not have NHL level defensive skills. Not his fault for the loss.

Posted by: capsfan5 | April 18, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

jim, do you really think we go to MSG and score on Lundy? please be more realistic. we had 35 shots and not one got through. 70 shots on goal for us and 45 for the rangers in both games combined. all you need to know is two words, Henrik Lundqvist.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 18, 2009 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Guys, it is over! As much as I love the Caps and I hope they make me eat their words, but you are seeing how a dominating goaltender and good team defense are so critical to the playoff chase. Theodore and the defense really put them in a hole in game one, but I thought Varlamov played pretty well in game 2. However, it all comes down to critical scoring and momentum and right now the Caps have neither. I doubt they will get it in MSG either! However, I do like the experience maturation of all the young players and their commitment to fore checking! I have seen more physical hits in the past two games than I have seen all season. It is time to get some "Nasty" veterans for this team next year! No more "Mr. Nice Guys" please.

Posted by: JohnWWW | April 18, 2009 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Well, we seemed to have fixed our defense. BB probably quizzed the team before putting Varlamov in goal. We have an uphill battle now - we have to win the next two and in their building too. Win or loose the Caps should learn a lot from this (I think cstanton said that some time ago).

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 18, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

If Green wins the Norris Trophy this year it will be a travesty. In no way does he deserve it simply because he is a goal scoring defensemen. He had so many errors tonight I am truly disgusted. Send him down to Hershey and bring up some defensemen that are actually hungry to play.

And Boudreau needs to STOP f***ing with Ovie, Semin and Backstrom lines. Each time he splits them up, we have no offense.

Terrible game. The only one who came to play today was Backstrom, Ovie (even though he had some major erros), and Varlamov. If Theo had been in, this game would've been 4-0. I hope the coach doesn't decide to put Theo back in. Varly had a couple of errors but played a solid game.

I just can't get over what a crap job our defense does. No hitting.

And Semin has got to stop with the immature penalties he is taking.

Let's hope now that their backs are against the wall they'll actually play like they want to be in the playoffs. Right now they look like they are ready for golfing.

Disgusting.

Posted by: sasha_206 | April 18, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

I can say that lundqvist was the rangers today. Other than one perfect shot goal that young kid you had in net was great. That was a good game and as a rangers fan I am feeling very lucky to have a 2-0 lead.

Posted by: rangerfan44 | April 18, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

REFS SUCKED SO BAD. And the caps needed to shoot on net rather than the stupid goalie for a change.
They made him look a lot better then he was.
UFFFFF

Posted by: entali | April 18, 2009 3:59 PM | Report abuse

after the first loss, BB said that he didn't expect to win 4 in a row anyway.......looks like they may just have to do that now

Posted by: PGM17 | April 18, 2009 4:01 PM | Report abuse

How can anyone say that was a good defensive game by the Caps? It was terrible. How many times did our defense turn the puck over? It was a sloppy game defensively and offensively.

Posted by: sasha_206 | April 18, 2009 4:02 PM | Report abuse

I hope BB stays with Varlamov. He's the future and this experience will be good for him.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 18, 2009 4:02 PM | Report abuse

The Rangers had something to do with how we played today.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 18, 2009 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Caps played a good game overall. Defense and Varly were both solid. Need to get traffic in front of Lundquist. If he can see it, he will stop it!
