Lundqist new what was coming all the time. No good. They need to shoot the puck from other than in front of lundqvist.

Posted by: oo7 | April 15, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Bench Theodore, Start Varlamov for as long as possible. Let's go Caps!

Posted by: Realness1 | April 15, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Theordore has to go. Why the Caps did not get a goalie is beyond me. Feinstein wrote about it weeks ago. They will not see the next series with Mr Swiss Cheese Theodore.

After two:

King 0.913
Theo 0.800

Ouch.

4goals on 20 shots .... 55 got embarassed
we r in deep dodo

Posted by: wendel2 | April 15, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Theo must go. So does Schultz. I know we will get Rags but these two are a liability.

Posted by: fnralch | April 15, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

McPhee is a moron for drafting Schultz and Boudreau is a bigger idiot for dressing him.

Also, only the 1st and 4th lines showed up to play tonight. Flash, Fehr, Fedorov, Nylander were all terrible. Semin wasn't much better. He got his goal but the rest of the time he was fairly useless.

Pothier will replace Schultz. But in the end, the Rangers will take this series in 5 or 6 games. They're not at all intimidated by us, by our PP, by our crowd. They came in and played their game, they outhit us, and we gave up 4 goals to a team who could barely score 3 goals in the regular season. Way to tighten it up caps D!

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 15, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Saw this coming.

Posted by: sknyluv | April 15, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

SCHULTZ IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a very nice move, but one that he shouldn't be able to pull off in the NHL. Scratch Schultz next game and play pothier.

Posted by: Thomas32 | April 15, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

No to be over reactionary, but thats all I need to see from Theo, Schultz, and Nylander. I haven't spent all season waiting for this to see those clowns. I'm not putting it all on Theo, just 3 out of 4 goals, especially the first. Schultz falling on his ass in the playoffs? Sorry kid, its the press box for you. Nylander, you didn't show up anyway, so we won't miss you.

Posted by: oo7 | April 15, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

so will Ted have the balls to fire McPhee after the "stanley cup bound caps" lose in the 1st round again? I mean, this would be considered a step back right if we lose this series?

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 15, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and the Caps suck in the 2nd period. They've been doing that so long, its become a habit.

Posted by: oo7 | April 15, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Disappointing. You just can't lose home ice in Game 1 of a playoff series. But I guess when you have guys like Schultz and Theo, it's inevitable. Bad games from both of them. Just frustrating to watch the Caps, a supposedly dominant home team, lose to the Rangers, an awful road team. And then to see the Rangers score four goals? That's just the icing on the crap cake.

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I know it's the playoffs, but Avery's interference on Gomez' goal has got to be called. Avery's interference on Green at the end of the game has got to be called.

You cannot abuse the lack of calls by an official in the way Avery did this game - it really disgraces hockey, and means that every enforcer should be playing Avery's style.

Also, if we're tied 3-3 in the 3rd, the shifts have got to stay short even on the power play. Green was out there too long and the game winning goal was scored on his watch (literally).

Yeah, Theo should've stopped most of those, but I think we lost much more because the Rangers played smarter hockey.

Laughlin mentioned at the start of the game how both Lundquist and Theodore both have "quick" reacting glove hands.

The only game Theo's glove hand is fast enough for is a putt-putt golf course down in Myrtle Beach moving in front of a tunnel.

Pens/Flyers getting rough the last few seconds.

If the Caps lose in the first round (especially if Andropov keeps scoring) McPhee should go.

Posted by: oo7 | April 15, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

I am a fan since the days of Al Jensen, Pete Peeters, Bobby Gould, etc. I can't help but think of how many talented teams the Caps had and never got past the first or second round. I remember Billy Smith, Beezer, Barrasso, and Hedberg standing on their head and stealing the series. I don't know see the Caps scoring more than three goals against King Henrick. Theo is going to have to make those saves. In Theo's defence, I am sure he would have rather seen more action in the first, the Caps should have at least gotten two for him in the first.

We shouldn't have even dressed our 2nd and 3rd lines. They didn't do anything. I'd rather see Hershey Bears up here than Nyles, Fedorov (who was awful tonight), Fehr, Flash and the rest. Even Laich looked like he was operating at halfspeed. No one worked the boards, no one showed much energy. The 1st line was great. The 4th line did their jobs. The D wasn't bad except for Schultz. But the 2nd and 3rd lines added nothing.

Same sloppiness we saw tonight we saw for most of the second half of the season. Same problems plaguing this team. And it's all about goaltending. Henrik kept the Rangers in the game, Theo kept the Caps out of it. If not for Henrik, Caps probably put five or six on the board. If not for a crossbar and a couple of lucky saves, Rangers probably have six or seven on the board.

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Rags in 5. This team is too predictable. Same old defense and same in Theo....

CDON-- Same sloppiness we saw tonight we saw for most of the second half of the season. Same problems plaguing this team

thats exactly right. And our PP will not save us against such a great PK team like the Rangers. They make it very difficult to penetrate that box and get anything but perimeter chances

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 15, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Don't be too tough on Schultz. Dubinsky's was a great move, and we can't discourage a young guy cause he got deked one time. But Theodore?! He's no Martin Broudeur. . .

Posted by: CaptnCap | April 15, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

My prediction: Caps in 7, and Ovechkin will score 9 points in the series.

Posted by: CaptnCap | April 15, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

I'm tired of pissing away entire day waiting to watch these guy lose. Get this season over with. why did I buy next years FULL season tix????

Posted by: 555Mass | April 15, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

you can win with adequate goaltending in the playoffs as the redwings have proven over the years but no team can win with lousy goaltending and we just saw lousy goaltending tonight. I'd give Theo one more period to straighten out his game, he was fighting the puck the whole game, didn't see one confident looking save all night.

Posted by: joek443 | April 15, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Another brilliant goaltending performance for Theo. This will be a short series if this continues.
Theo blows! You can't contend for a cup, let alone win a playoff game with a goalie that lets 4 goals in. 3 of them were soft.
The guys that played hard tonight have got to want to beat Theo with a sock and a bar of soap!

Posted by: dlmy | April 15, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Womp Womp Waaaaaahhhhhhh. My prediction: Kvetchkin needs oxygen by the end of the series. Lets go Rangers.

Posted by: astroland | April 15, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

As a team the caps played quite well. Lundqvist played amazing and Theodore was horrible. The only good saves he made were off of absolutely brutal rebounds that he gave out. Those saves shouldn't have been needed. NY made some nice shots but Theodore should have had all of those goals. He may have been too screened on one of them but the rest were just straight shots that shouldn't have beat him. I think that's the worst game he's played all year. There were a few that didn't go in that he completely missed but hit the post rather than going in. I think that was far worse than anyone thought he would play and worse than even the Rangers would have been hoping he'd play. I'd normally say that he'll bounce back but I have never seen such a poor display in my life. Sickening. But do they put in Varlmaov? I would. He would have saved at least 3 of those.

Posted by: Stu_c | April 15, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Not - NOT - Theo's fault! Maybe one - bad luck. The others: great shots! Caps did not create opportunities - Rangers did. Get rid of some idiot defencemen and bring in Alzner! Great coaching from NY staff!!!
