Post reporter Gene Wang will be chatting live around 7 p.m., when the Caps go for a franchise-record 11th straight victory. Goalie Jose Theodore will be in net against the Bruins at TD Garden, where he'll look to set his own record with an eighth consecutive win.

I don't like the live game chat. I prefer to have the comments here.

FloridaCapsFan: I didn't like it at first, but it's really fun once you start chatting. Tonight will be a fun one!! Join in!!

Hmmm- well then I guess a new 50 inch in the computer room is a must. If there's a Mrs. FloridaCapsFan, explain to her that it's one of those "necessary spending items". I'm sure she'll understand.

Posted by: Fro_ | February 2, 2010 4:49 PM | Report abuse

Yes, there is a Mrs. FloridaCapsfan and no, she wouldn't understand. She loves the Caps too BTW. In fact, she turned me onto them.

FCF,
It would seem that with your computer being in a different room than your TV, the use of the Live Chat is inconsequential. You won't be able to post game-time comments either way. Am I missing something?

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | February 2, 2010 5:07 PM | Report abuse

Aleksander, I post between periods and after the game unless there's something I have to get off my chest right away.

Hookey calling for the first hat trick of the season - hope you're right

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 2, 2010 6:42 PM | Report abuse

I hope he is right too it would put him back above Crosby

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 2, 2010 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Ovi shouldn't go out there and try to emulate what Crosby did last night. It will throw off the Caps rythm. I don't care if he scores more goals and whatnot than Crosby, just win the game. Let's go Caps!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are somewhat fortunate to be only 1 goal down after the first period.

too many lazy penalties

Posted by: wendel2 | February 2, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Damn, 4 penalties in the first period, including a 5 on 3? All legit? That seems like a lot...

Posted by: VTDuffman | February 2, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Outshot 12-5, and 2 of our 5 came from Poti. Too many penalties.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

I saw the replay on 3 of the 4 penalties and they looked legit. I didn't see the replay on Backstrom's but he looked confused. I'm guessing it was legit though.

That period was an anomaly. Just throw it out and play smarter in the 2nd.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Morrison just needed to get the puck up on that shot he took on the 5-on-3. There was a lot of open net.

Theodore is definitely saving us tonight.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Theodore is playing great now, if only the rest of the team can raise it up a little. They seem a bit off tonight - passes just out of reach, too many offsides etc. The Caps must be feeling the pressure to win their 11th straight. That was a much better second period by them though.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan

I'm here. But most people seem to be posting on the live chat. And it's taken forever to load.

And I feel like the mother of the bad kid at the moment. Bringing back memories of when my first born was in 1st and 2nd grade and always in trouble. Of course her best friend was the teacher's pet (who was 6 days younger than Ovi).

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 2, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

This is by far the worst they have looked during their win streak. If not for theo, this game is out of reach. Green is badly missed on PP. The puck seams to be rolling off OV's stick constantly.

Poti and Theo were the best players on the ice tonight by a long ways.

Caps are now 5-0-1 when giving up 40+ shots. That is insane.

Poti had to be the best non-goalie. He was getting it done at both ends.

1. Theodore
2. Poti
3. Laich

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

And the stat sheet reflects Poti's all-around play. He was +4.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

What say you about Theo now Caps fans? He's a grrrreat goalie. Eight in a row for him eleven in a row for the Caps. Alex got the kind of hat-trick you don't want but I think he got an assist later and he played fast and furious right to the end. They stepped it up in the 3rd again; congratulations to them and thanks for the ride.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Those Bruins were playing hard! Wouldn't want to be in that locker room right now!

As for the Caps...

Anybody up for 12? :)

Posted by: capscoach | February 2, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

11 straight... simply awesome.

What a gae Theodore played - I have NEVER seen him that spectacular. He kept the Caps in throughout the game, and had no business making some of those saves. And Poti was awesome on both ends of the ice.

Best forward - Laich. Not only did he have a goal, but he saved 1, and was working his tail off the whole game.

Posted by: timmyv38 | February 2, 2010 9:44 PM | Report abuse

A few thoughts:

-As many will and have said, Theodore was AMAZING. Main reason for the win
-Poti had a really good game. Best player, other than Theo, for the Caps.
-Nice to see Gordo get one in.
-Laich had good game too. He worked hard for his goal
-I thought Sloan had another good game. Broke up some key plays.
-Lastly but certainly not least, 11 straight wins! WOOT!

Posted by: elicea | February 2, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

I suppose it's a good sign when you can win games where you were outplayed but it could also reflect luck.

One thing I've noticed about the Blackhawks is that the stat sheet is almost invariably tilted in their favor even when they lose.

The beginning of this game made me think of the game against SJ at Verizon. They took a bunch of penalties early and never recovered. We deserve some credit for sure for working ourselves back into this game, even if we didn't play all that great.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Theo and the PK were awesome tonight. Eleven in a row and first in the NHL for the moment........ ITS ROCKIN' THE RED!!!!! BOOYAH!

Posted by: eorr | February 2, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

It is not only the Caps that are the best. For the first time that I can remember an NHL team that is in first in the league also has not 1 but 2 of their minor league teams (Hershey and South Carolina) also in first in their leagues this late in the season.

WOW...

Posted by: Still_Miss_Dino | February 2, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

FloridaCapsFan, I assume by Alex you mean Semin? He did have an assist, and his second penalty might just have saved a goal to keep it 1-0.

Posted by: timmyv38 | February 2, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao

You create your own luck in hockey...you gotta give em some credit! And th Bruins were not very good on D when we ha the puck. We eaked out the win, but I don't think we robbed th Bruins of it.

Posted by: capscoach | February 2, 2010 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Poti looked like Green sometimes tonight the way he took the puck up the ice.

Posted by: timmyv38 | February 2, 2010 9:49 PM

Yes I did mean Semin and I too think he took a "good" penalty (like Ovi) and an unfortunate one (Chara). No complaints.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Like I said, it's impressive that we found a way to keep ourselves in it after all the early penalties.

When SJ came into our building early in the season, they couldn't rebound from their parade to the penalty box in the 1st period.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 9:56 PM | Report abuse

I think the win was well deserved. The Caps were outshot it's true but, after the first, not outplayed.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 9:57 PM | Report abuse

It's nice that we're finding different ways to win hockey games. That's certainly a good sign.

Our top line wasn't especially great tonight but other lines and our defense and goaltending stepped up.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

I think I'm going to have a screw-driver now to celebrate. Good night all.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | February 2, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

So if the Red Wings can win in regulation or OT tonight, we'll be first in the NHL.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

@FLCapsFan,

OV shouldn't emulate what Cindy did last night; he should emulate what he did last season (in June).

Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 2, 2010 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Semin had 3 penalties tonight, that needs to stop before playoff time.

Also they need to figure out why we always take the first period off, teams that win Cups play for 3 periods.

All that being said we can beat than almost every team only showing up for the last 2 periods so imagine how devastating this team will be when they finally put it all together.

11 in a row and we are not even near our peak, is that scary or exciting?

Posted by: peteywheatstraw | February 2, 2010 10:05 PM | Report abuse

if they don't dig too big of a hole early, they always have a chance to win in the third... that's where goaltending comes in like tonight

Posted by: joek443 | February 2, 2010 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Really enjoying Alan May this season...Kind of reminds me of Chris Collinsworth of NFL Today...not the biggest/baddest guy out there, but you would want him on your side when the bar fight breaks out...

The Bruins did hit 2 posts and failed to convert on a penalty shot as well as a couple of chances where a player was wide open in front of the net.

Part of that was Theodore's amazing play. Part of it was luck. Part of it was the Bruins struggling to finish.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Congrats the Caps for setting a new franchise record for a win streak. A sloppy start but smothering finish.

Jose Theodore: The man is on a mission. What a ways he has come from a rocky start to the season. Let's not forget this man is still coping with the death of a child. Let's hope that he continues this sick display of netminding when called upon. He bailed his team out with the help of some posts when they needed it tonight.

Another opportunistic win. What can you say about Tom Poti stepping up and doing his thing. I've criticized at times but he's getting it done with the rest of the team.

A satisfying victory. It's now on to Madison Square Garden to try for a dirty dozen in a row over the Rangers.

It's been a two point night.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS

Posted by: Jonathan6 | February 2, 2010 10:19 PM | Report abuse

odd question, on a penalty shot if the shot goes wide and the goalie does not make a save is it listed as a shot in the stats?

Posted by: jay18 | February 2, 2010 10:22 PM | Report abuse

Question: It was pointed out a few days ago (I think when they had won their ninth straight) that every regular (non goalie) player on the Caps have scored a goal in this winning streak beside Boyd Gordon. Well, now that this streak is two wins more, and Gordon has joined the rest of the regulars on the goal scoring sheet over the past 11 games, my question is, is there any way to find out the record for the shortest streak of games (doesn't have to be a winning streak) in which all the regulars have managed to score at least 1 goal?

I would have to think that doing that in 11 games has got to be some sort of record, or at least close to the record.

p.s. I am not including Sloan in this streak, because he has not played in all the 11 games...now, if he were to score on Thursday that would definitely be something!

11!! I had a good feeling that with BB at the helm, a record would be set tonight. I am hoping for lot more great things to come.

Go Caps! Congrats!

@The_Stanley_Caps

And Sloan had at least one really good scoring chance in, I believe, the last game.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 10:40 PM | Report abuse

On Semin's penalties.

1) On the first one, the announcer said he was trying for a "lift check" but Chara knew exactly what to do to avoid it and draw the penalty.

2) The other two were attempts to prevent goals. (The last one happening as Theo made a great save.)

The guy's trying. Granted he needs to be more careful. But it's not a lack of effort.

At least he had the assist to Laich for the game winning goal.

I just got back from the Gahden. Great win for the Caps. There were maybe a hundred Caps fans scattered throughout the arena. Theo was absolutely spectacular and Poti was great as well. They both deserved their stars. See you at the Booth on Friday.

Posted by: ccCapsfan | February 2, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't think there's any need to defend Semin's penalties or his effort, the first one was accidental and the second one was a good penalty to take.

the people who get on him for every little thing don't know what the heck they're talking about anyway

Posted by: CapsSkins | February 2, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse

everyone has talked about the streak being more than coincidence with OV being captain. anyone realize around that same time period is when we traded clark and jurcina. i think the streak is a product of noone else wanting to be traded off the next stanley cup champions so they are all playing their butts off!

Posted by: CapsSkins | February 2, 2010 11:04 PM | Report abuse

Not only did Semin get the assist on Laich's goal, he was also flying around and putting pressure on the Bruins' D throughout that shift. He was on a mission and he successfully completed that mission.

A lot of his penalties come from him trying to make positive plays. He gets overzealous at times but his intentions are in the right place.

He and Backstrom are our best players at forcing turnovers and stripping pucks. They both make far more positive plays than negative ones.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 11:05 PM | Report abuse

Poti has been given the green light to join the rush in absence of Green... it's good to see he can still do it when given the opportunity.

"wow...you know the team is firing on all cylinders when poti has the longest goal drought streak on the team of 8 games. GO CAPS!!!"

It's not looking like Detroit is going to help us out tonight. Down 2-0 in SJ is quite a hole to put yourself in, even if it's only the 1st period.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse

Wow, O'Reilly scored 2 SHGs in about 3 minutes against Columbus.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 11:10 PM | Report abuse

Detroit made it 2-1 and is now on a 5-on-3 for over a minute and a half.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Detroit ties it immediately on the 5-on-3. Holmstrom is back. I didn't realize that.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 2, 2010 11:17 PM | Report abuse

@tmac: I agree, I'll take Semin vs. No Semin. But for a guy with THAT much talent, he needs to realize that ice time with him in the box is bad news for the Caps. It really is that simple. Intent, yes. Effort, sure. But pick your spots better, son.

I will argue, however, that due to Chara's extended length, high sticking calls should be disallowed.

Posted by: info_stuporhighway | February 2, 2010 11:24 PM | Report abuse

How's this for another fun fact about how awesome the Caps are:

If they lose every single game for the rest of the regular season they will still stay at .500. That is nuts, given that we're just starting February. I still can't get over that the team is 5-0-1 when giving more than 40 shots up. Who says goaltending can't help this team win?

Posted by: Aldred15 | February 2, 2010 11:27 PM | Report abuse

Glad people here aren't too upset with Semin's penalties. Agree with tmac2yao on the fact that he was well intentioned and trying to make positive plays.

(Everyone was so ready to crucify him after the game in Detroit. Sure, he took two penalties, one of them costly. But so did Green that day. Plus, the PK that day was abysmal. And, as for the first New Jersay game, so many people and bloggers were ready to run him out of town either via trade or letting him go via offer sheet.)
