Bylsma knows the gameplan. He's seen it work.

The plan: Dump the puck in and apply the heavy forecheck.

My guess is this game will hinge on how we respond to their speed and aggressive forecheck.

If our defensemen can get to pucks first (or win battles when they don't) then make good, quick decisions, we'll be able to neutralize the Penguins' gameplan and trigger our offense.

If we let the Penguins get to pucks first in our own end and keep us hemmed in with their forecheck or make bad decisions with the puck in the defensive zone, it could spell trouble.

Ivan Carter still says Jose's name like "Hosay" Theodore.

But even worse: I was listening to The Sports Reporters on ESPN 980 today and one guy called Jose "Hosay Tayadore", which is even worse.

SO excited for this game! Cannot wait to see our old friend Johnny, hope we are very rude to him!

Bylsma knows the gameplan. He's seen it work.

The plan: Dump the puck in and apply a heavy forecheck. Force the Caps defensemen (and forwards) to make mistakes in their own end. Don't allow it to be a back and forth game.

My guess is that this game will largely be determined by how the Caps handle their speed and aggressive forechecking.

If our defenseman can get to pucks first (or win battles when they don't) then make good, quick decisions with the puck, we'll be able to neutralize the Penguins' gameplan and run and gun, Caps style.

On the other hand, if we can't get to pucks first and win battles in our own end, allowing Pittsburgh to hem is into our own for extended stretches, we could be in trouble. That will lead to the ice being heavily tilted in their favor and us taking penalties and giving up scoring chances.

Neutralize the dump and chase and aggressive forechecking = A likely win.

Struggle to neutralize the dump and chase and aggressive forechecking = A likely loss and a painful reminder of how Pittsburgh climbed back into, and eventually won, that series last season.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 21, 2010 5:28 PM | Report abuse

@tmac2yao

I agree completely.

I think the Caps biggest deficiency is them being unable to handle an aggressive forecheck and being able to clear the zone with accurate passes instead of just dumping the puck down the boards.

I think a defenseman to fill this deficiency is the Caps greatest need at the deadline.

Posted by: sgm3 | January 21, 2010 5:31 PM | Report abuse

That's the tricky thing about playing the Penguins. You think they would try to lean on their skill guys to well... outskill us.

Nope.

They try to outwork us and slow the game down by playing dump and chase to go with an aggressive forecheck, forcing us to make mistakes in our own end. They beat us in the playoffs last season with their role players as much as their stars.

Let's see if we learned our lesson. How we handle ourselves in the defensive zone will probably tell the story of this game and any future games between these two teams as currently constructed.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 21, 2010 5:32 PM | Report abuse

@sgm3

It may take more than one defensemen. Boudreau's system will become that much more effective with more capable defensemen. People keep talking about our need for more grit on the backend. While I fully agree with that, it's much more than just the need for grit. We need more speed and more skill and better decision-making out of our defensmen (and some of our forwards) while in the defensive zone. If we ever accomplish that, either internally or through personnel changes, the league's most potent offense will become even more potent because they be more efficent in getting the puck out of their own and up to the forwards.

Bitter memories arise every time we play the Pens.

tmac2yao

You make some excellent points in your posts.

Last year we were very successful with the Penguins (until the fated 7th game though the decline started in game 4 or 5 I think). Do you remember what it was that we did right and why we started unraveling?

You are absolutely right when you say that it is not a matter of adding or correcting individual players but establishing the right team culture and systems. Does the responsibility, then, fall on Boudreau as the one who has to create the culture, balance and systems? I find it difficult to find flaw with a man who brought this team from irrelevance to dominance in a year's time.

I forget whether it was richmondphil or someone else, but I remember someone pointing out that the real reason we lost that series was the huge penalty discrepancy between the Caps and Pens. Whether it's discipline related or referee favoritism, we simply couldn't overcome the amount of time we were shorthanded in the series.

Posted by: Raber | January 21, 2010 6:55 PM | Report abuse

The reason we were shorthanded so often was because the Penguins were forechecking and backchecking the crap out of us.

There was no conspiracy or favoritism.

Pittsburgh tilted the ice starting around the 2nd game of the series even though we won that game.

They hemmed is in our own zone with an aggressive and relentless forecheck. That's a big reason as to why they drew more penalties.

When we did get the puck out, they backchecked hard as a team and quickly got it back into our own end and reapplied their forecheck.

The refs didn't care who won. Pittsburgh did though and they worked harder and earned the series. I guarantee you if the stat is available anywhere, you will see that the majority of the series was played in our zone.

What I meant to say is the majority of play was in our zone, not even factoring in special teams.

The majority of even strength play was in our zone because we struggled with their forecheck. That, in turn, led to us taking more penalties and some people reaching for conspiracy theories that never existed.

caraveli - I think you are touching on the final ingredient. I think Bruce has been fortunate as a coach to have the skill and talent pool in the players he has. With them, I think he has done a remarkable job in developing them as individuals, mixing lines, having faith in some while others questioned, etc... hats off to him and he deserves his coach of the year accolades. Now, I think, we are at a defining moment and that is (as you stated) getting all of the players to buy into the system 100%. Most try and most have throughout many games this year... just not all. I think the team as we see it will do fine through the playoffs without adding any players through trades. I say keep it as it is and let Bruce and the leaders on the team take it to the next step and bring the team together as the "disciplined" teams in the league demonstrate. I have faith.

raber: I'm the one who has pointed out over and over about the 37 to 19 PP discrepancy in the Caps Pens series.

TMAC keeps saying it's because they outworked us, and I disagree. That's part of it, but Bill McCreary specifically gave the Pens the PP benefit throughout the playoffs. I don't think it's a conspiracy, I think it's a mancrush for Cindy on his part. Canadians got to stick together, eh?

In one series, I think vs Dettroit, Pens had six players on the ice for a full 20-30 seconds. Whistle finally blew to call a penalty on the Wings. Conspiracy? No, just incredibly incompetent officiating.

Let's just say, with McCreary retiring before the Playoffs (he accomplished his goal last year), everybody else's odds will go up.

And then, when the Pens get knocked out this year, they'll say it's because they "didn't work as hard as last year."

Meanwhile, construction on the new basement wing of the Lemieux mansion continues, so McCreary can move in with Cindy after he retires.

Posted by: amorris525 | January 21, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Where is IROCKTHERED? I'll bet she has the stats. Here's my question:

What was the PP difference in the Caps-Pens games on those without McCreary as compared to those games with McCreary? That's the best piece of evidence. Then, do those stats exist in the Pens-Canes and Pens-Wings series? My bet is the Pens had a better PP advantage with McCreary as ref than with McCreary not at that game.

Conspiracy? Never. The NHL is above that. Mancrush on Cindy? Has anyone looked in McCreary's closet? Are there any pink, ruffly foo-foos in there?

You can call the cable company and they will let you put the NHL Network one day at a time if you don't want to pay the $3.99/month (but I pay for it all the time, as it has like WJC games and rebroadcasts and stuff). Anyway, they are giving us the Pens feed on the NHL Net tonight. I guess that means we get the one-sided replays too.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | January 21, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin with 7 hits. The rest of the Caps with 12.

We were out-hitting them after the 1st period.

Now it's 27-19 in favor of the Pens.

We only have 1 giveaway and are winning 28-18 in faceoffs.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 21, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

The Pens started throwing the body around and shielding the puck on their last PP. Hence the long puck possession and eventual goal. The Caps need to watch out for that this next period and take the man if they can't get the puck loose.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 21, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

It's frustrating at times to watch us struggle to win pucks behind our own net. I've seen times where opposing teams send 1 guy in and we have 2 or 3 guys back and somehow they come out with the puck. We handled their forecheck well in the 1st period but started to struggle in the 2nd.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 21, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan

They tried to take the body at times on that sequence but still couldn't win 50/50 pucks. It's among our biggest problems.

You're right though, we need to be more aggressive in our own end whether on the PK or otherwise.

They also need to be smarter positionally and with the puck. There were a few instances where there was a Penguin behind the net and the Caps player ended up on the wrong side of the guy's body after over-committing to the dump in or pass.

I think it would be interesting to see the Penguins with any player other than Malkin to take pressure off Crosby.

Carlson and Alzner were both solid, once Carlson got past some shaky giveaways early. ShaMo also very good. All in all, the D was very good. One fluke goal, one atrocious rebound by Theo and one perfectly placed shot by Letang on the dying PP.

I'd say Alzner was surprisingly good (he almost saved the dopey 1st goal) and Carlson was "mostly solid."

On the horizon - roster decisions.

the best thing about this game besides the win was the fact that their two future studs on D Alzner and Carlson played over 19 and 17 minutes respectively did a good job. Carlson was plus 2 and Alzner was minus 2 but the first goal was a flukey goal so shouldn't count

it's time for them to get some extended playing time and see if they can help the team in the playoffs this year

How many times do we have to see opposing players dance around our D? Cindy and Malk split our D so often it looked like a set play. GMGM simply must get some help here. I know...we're winning, we're in first place, yada yada yada. I'd like to see us get the cup, and this D ain't gonna get it done.

Posted by: scmonty1 | January 21, 2010 10:19 PM | Report abuse

Wait. Just wait.

You guys are bemoaning Malkin dancing around Caps? How bout Ovi and Backie dancing around Pens? Remember, world-class forwards will beat most d men most of the time.

No, Carlson was not best defenseman on ice:

#1 Alzner
#2 ShaMo
#3 Poti, Carlson, Schultz tied
#6 Sloan

I'll bet Alzner made ten - count em, ten - "little" plays that contributed to brreaking up a Pens scoring chance.

#1 Star - Ovechkin
#2 Star - Knuble
#3 Star - Alzner

That's my ranking. Any Pens fans doesn't like it, you know what you can kiss.

Overall, I did think we handled their forecheck well for the most part. I thought that would be the difference in the game.

@zmega

On the Caps looking like the Devils tonight.

Well the Devils are certainly the model of the team to follow if you want to beat the Penguins. This year, the Devils have definitely had the Pens' number.

I know its the playoffs that really matter....but holy sh$t that was fun. Especially the third period, the Caps were by far the better team.

Not too shabby beating the 2 Stanley Cup finalists back to back.

Ok - I admit it. Even though I was upset about the officiating, and was ready to turn it off, I didn't and I absolutely loved this game. The guys were great, and I came out of my seat with Flash's breakaway goal.

Great game guys - let's go Caps!!!

Malkin really isn't especially strong. It's his leverage if that's what you were getting at.

And, he is absolutely a magician with the puck.

When he's determined and on his game, I think he's in a league of his own in that department.

His puckhandling skills are second to none. It's more than just a matter of his long reach.

@sean1smith:

I realize you're a Pittsburgh troll, but you need to get your facts right. Ovechkin doesn't live with his mother; he owns the house and she stays with him when she's in the US.

Quite a difference from Cindy's home with Mario. Doesn't Sid make enough money to buy a house - or possibly 100 houses - in Pittsburgh? After all, the real estate market there isn't exactly hot!

Posted by: DevilsCapsGal | January 21, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

@sean1smith and wilk3321

U mad?

If the Pens won, this "scrimmage" you'd be gloating and doing your best keyboard warrior routine. Go eat one, seriously.

But anyway. I can't believe Malkin isn't in the top five scoring. Dude was amazing for stretches..Bylsma ran him ragged.

Let's hold off on this trade for a D-man talk. Let the kids play and see what happens. They played pretty damn well tonight and deserve more time with the big club.

Only penalty called on the Caps I had a problem with was the ticky-tack call on Carlson...let them play. Otherwise, they were good calls. Non calls going the other way though..meh.

Game was fun to watch.

BTW, that was sweet when Staal chopped him right at the end of the second period wasn't it? he couldn't really say, hey, that isn't something I wouldn't do, is it?? The thing is we laugh our butts off at how you are so obsessed with this "rivalry" here. Win something and then it will be a rivalry for us. Now it is a sideshow. 3 Cups to, uh, what? none?

Come on Gould 23 it isn't all that serious is it??? All league cities fans hate pens fans?? This game was undoubtedly big for NHL standards just based on the fact they talked about it on the ESPN shows, etc, but do you really think the fans in Anaheim, Montreal, Detroit, Chicago, LA, San Jose, even NY, gave a passing thought to it other than watching the highlights tomorrow morning? You are right though; Iron City is swill, but it is just like how Red Stripe sells to tourists. I give you some credit for that knowledge so have an idea we could actually have an objective discussion about hockey some day.

Well, nothing for Cindy to do but put on some ruby red lipstick after the game and call Bill McCreary to find out why he didn't ref the game.

"Geez-zu-peets, Bill, if you'd'a been here, we'd'a had another dozen power plays or so. I mean, that time Staal slashed Ovechkin, you could'a called Ovechkin for tripping over the stick or something."

"Sorry, Sid. I can't do ALL your games. Mario won't let me. Says it looks worse than the TV producer not sending the full feed to Toronto."

"Ahh, Bill, c'mon! We need power plays!"

"Like it or lump it, Sid, that's how it goes."

"Geez-zu-peets, do you know Ovechkin SNEERED at me and they didn't call it?"

Maybe Cindy needs more time practicing with his mommy's dryer.

Enjoy your Cups, Pens fans, they're the last ones you'll ever see. I myself will enjoy life going forward.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:

Another game - another win. Great effort after the shoddy effort against Detroit.

Theo: Ehh on the first goal but was solid all the way around.

A great job defensively and clearing the puck out. It was almost hard to believe Mike Green didn't play tonight.

That third period effort was monstrous. They kept coming until the final buzzer and backchecked well throughout. Great puck support tonight.

Ovie did his thing. The stars were there.

I can't wait to hear the "Fleury was out excuse" haha. Johnson is no slouch and could start in this league plus his numbers were damn solid against the Caps. Not tonight.

Caps fans - seriously don't waste your time on ignorance and noise that only seems to show up on this board at certain times to shout out meaningless crap. Again it was just another game. A good win.

Back home as the Coyotes come howling to Verizon on Saturday.

It's been a two point night.

@FloridaCapsFan

The Caps only got 4 penalties today. Skated 3 of them off. The remaining penalty (when Carlson was in the box), they had "technically" skated off but they were still penned in the defensive zone and weren't able to clear. A penalty that was "technically" skated off but costly.

Overall, the Caps did a MUCH better job of killing penalties than Pitt did. The Caps were a perfect 2 for 2 in Power Play conversion tonight.

I forget whether it was richmondphil or someone else, but I remember someone pointing out that the real reason we lost that series was the huge penalty discrepancy between the Caps and Pens. The reason we lost that series was because our defense was too slow and incapable of clearing the crease. Not to mention Varlamov's game 7 meltdown.

richmondphil: you are close to reality but if you happen to have the entire series on tape (I have it if you want a copy) and you watch it with an objective (i.e. put the caps/DC crack pipe down) you will realize that series was not a typical 7 games series. Pens dominated 5 of the 7 games. Watch it again sans drugs/alcohol and tell me different. What I am getting to is this; adding a d-man won't be enough when it comes to crunch time. You do have cap room for a scorer but will the executive suite (ovie's mom) at caps center accomodate a real talent??????

Yes he had a horrid game against the Wings, but I thought he played pretty well tonight. He had a few very nice plays. I must have missed most of the clunkers.

Alzner was terrific, and Carlson's hit on Crosby and wicked shot were nice. he has size and speed. Can't wait to see more.

Can't say enough about Semin's feed or what Flash did with it. And Backstrom is turning into a beast going to goal!

I have heard that rich people can't relate to poor people, no matter what the other similarities, i.e. race, age, culture, etc. but I think it is the same for sports fans. Non-stanley cup winners fans are simply unable to relate to fans of Stanley Cup winner teams and even more-so to fans of teams who have won three Cups. Especially when THAT team has beaten the non-Cup winning team 7 out of 8 playoff series. I mean, really?

I saw it. Gaborik threw his gloves off, all bets were off.

“I didn’t really expect to fight who I fought, but it kind of worked out,” Carcillo said. “I don’t know who on that line would have been able to help him though. I wasn’t expecting him to drop his gloves, but when he did, I pretty much was licking my chops.”

hey listen dou$hebag, I happen to think that Mario Lemieux is the greatest offensive weapon that I've ever seen in my 26 years of watching hockey... I can appreciate his talent and what the Pens have achieved...

what I can't stand is goof balls like you who thinks he is somehow superior because his team has had more success... you had NOTHING to do with anything, you are NOT any part of any team and neither am I

fair enough Richmondphil. the best highlight I saw it looked about even with the gloves dropping. Which is fair. I guess Carcillo was just faster to the punch. That's twice i've seen him faster to the punch maybe he should drop the skates and pick up boxing gloves!

In polite conversation it is considered quite rude to try and be elite by flashing your degree. However trying to sound intellectual by mentioning that you are in training to earn a degree that will earn you less than an Arby's manager is not rude, its just flat out silly. Sociology is such a waste.

Game was good though. Ended up being late for work because of the late start but from what I saw in the first 2 periods I was impressed. Very good physical hockey. The NHL needs more match ups like this one.

eorr: response to you post: Ovie a "prima donna" is very much the pot calling the kettle black. Did you not see Crosby crying to the refs after he was hit hard fair and square hoping for the next penalty call?

Yes, actually I did see that. But all great players have been like Crosby and Ovekghich (spelling>??) as far as whining about officiating (see, Orr, Espisito, Lemieux, Gretzy, Brett Hull, Messier when older). I saw Gordie Howe play (yes I am old) and he did the same thing on the ice) but he did not run at people and take unnecessary charges at people like Oveggchin (spelling???) does most every game. I am convinced by Oveggkins (sp???) play and contract that he will not be with current team in 5 years. Bet me????

I find it hilarious that you are "old" because I thought old people were either in bed at this time or had better things to to do than post on message boards at this hour. You must be more of a loser than we all originally thought!

trunkenmath: dude, seriously, i am so hopeful that you really didn't think i really meant i was going for a sociology degree. If not, please tell me you have no contact with the general public in your occupation.

Gordie Howe played till he was like 50 with his sons, the Whalers when they in the WHA

Posted by: joek443 | January 22, 2010 1:00 AM | Report abuse

actually i am 45 and a pens fan. have had season tix to wash games for 5 years since i can afford it. Old people usually are in bed now, myself included. however, I bet three people (separately, but they didn't know there were three bets) that I could get over 20 responses to my rants on here. This is so awesome. Pens lose (which I knew they would with their injuries) but I beat the caps again. Like always. Looking forward to your responses (dont hold back-i already got 20). Ha ha ha

@ joek: Don't worry he isn't actually old. Old people don't say "Dude, Seriously"

Sean1smith; "dude, seriously, i am so hopeful that you really didn't think i really meant i was going for a sociology degree."

Fraud, go to bed. You probably have a schoold bus to catch tomorrow morning.

21: Congrats, I am glad you knew the Pens would lose. Again, you are so insightful and also full of it. I am glad you could make light of the loss though. Good for you.

An open letter to the numerous Pens Trolls polluting this board:

LOL.
LOL.
LOL.

You're only as good as the last meeting. Yes you won the Stanley Cup last season. Yes you have won 3 and we have 0--as you never f$%^#%$ing neglect to remind us.

But that was then and this is now. The past is meaningless now...except as a further motivator for our eventual--and inevitable--revenge.

You lost tonight.
To the better team.
Get used to it. It's going to be happening a lot from now on...

I'm not sure whether you're more upset because OV outscored Crysby (again--LMAO), or because the Caps didn't play as though they were in awe of the Pens for the first 40 minutes as they did against Detroit (whom they also managed to defeat, BTW). Funny how that works, ain't it? Pens got the Cup but the Wings still get more respect--LMAO.

Q: What is the only place where 27>158 ?
A: At a Caps/Pens game.

BWAHAAHAAHAHAHHAAAHHAAHAHAHAHAHA!

Your Time is over...IT'S OUR TIME NOW!

@sean1smith
I mean, the way you are posting I figure you aren't the brightest of bulbs so you could actually be a shining star of sociology. I know you feel like you are being a clever troll and getting the regulars here in a tizzy but you lack a certain spark that good trolls have. Your trolling covers the same things others have said better.

Pens have more cups! Yeah we know, so does Carolina.

Ovechkin will become TO! I had to google who he was.

Win something and it will be more than a sideshow! Well considering you came to a caps board it shows you do care, so maybe it is a rivalry.

Ovie lives with his Mom! In your case this may well be a pot calling a kettle black.

you may be right eorr. but i saw howe with the whalers but not in the wha, with the nhl against the pens in the nhl in the 70s. We sufferred through serious beat downs against the flyers et al for years then. I went to games as a teen then when it was an actual miracle for us to cross the blue line without an icing. Fighting was all we had. I only say dude, seriously, because caps fans seem som childnish in their expectations. But I do think it stems from that Ovegggken (sp??) guy. he doesn't have a feeling for the history of the nhl and what it means to be a star. He is very very very good. But a chump. respond for my money. :-)

23: Whatever clown, I hope my posts are winning you money because I am sure you need it. The on purpose misspelling of Ovechkin's name is one of the lamest attempts at trolling I have ever seen. Enjoy your theoretical money.

I would go to bed, but one bet with some dork named "ovegkin laichs semin" was that I wouldn't get 50 responses. I tried to tell him he wasnt spelling that slew footers name right but he wouldn't yield. So here I am. Sitting with my G&T and my Cup Classic video

Posted by: sean1smith | January 22, 2010 1:21 AM | Report abuse

Wow. Glad I went to bed. I have to agree with joek though, the Caps are a much better team this year with the addition if Knuble and as someone else pointed out, we miss scuds dearly. That said, this is a regular season win.

One that we would have liked to have gotten, for sure, but I think that the Pens are kind of like Duke--if they make the touney of 64, even losses to Carolina regular season don't come into play as they are a threat to win the "second season" games.

Again, good game last night. Let's go Pens.

Nice to see some frustrated haters after they saw the new Caps in action 8) Caps are improving under BB and showing best results with new franchise records this season.
Ya people who sit on their butts actually believe that everybody will improve come the PO time except Caps - the team with best secondary and primary scoring in da NHL today.

Capitals had THREE AHL defenders out there against Pens and a 2nd goalie Theo who is pushing back to #1 spot and won an away goals with 4/4 PK and 2/2 PP. Finally a team effort is present unlike previous season where only 1st line cared about winning - whole team wants to win now!

Posted by: Hazz | January 22, 2010 9:19 AM | Report abuse

IMO the Caps looked like a far better team than the Pens last night. After the 1st period, I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Caps were going to win. I know it was regular season but if I were Mario I would have my guys in the war room trying to figure out what we need at the trade deadline to try to compete.

Not one time last season, even though the Caps went 3-0-1 against the Pens last season, not one time did I feel relaxed during a game against the Pens, no matter how big the lead. Even when the Caps fell behind 3-2, I had the confidence that the Caps would come back. I believe the Caps felt like the better team too. THEY looked confident even when they weren't leading. The Caps will definitely get some help for the playoffs if it is attainable, but they certainly looked good again last night. MAF was out, but besides the big save against Ovi in Game 7, he really has not been a game changer for the Pens against the Caps.
