new thread bug bit me.
Dizzy1205, That is absolute horsepoop. First of all, with the exception of the beginning of the season, Nick is one of the few guys on our team who has been playing through the injury bug. He deserves a few days of rest.
Secondly, its not like Nick put his name in, then decided he didn't want to do it. He never asked for the "honour" of being named to the game.
Thirdly, shall we discuss conspiracy theories? Detroit, Wings, Devils, Habs, Flyers are all playing a non-playoff team as their first game back. Of the teams playing playoff bound teams, Rags are playing the 8th EC, Sabres play the 3rd WC, Yotes & Hawks both play the 8th WC as their first game. Pens play the Rags. The Caps-Bs are the only teams besides Sabres that play a top 3 team as their first game back.
Fourth, Bettman's an idiot.

@JMU
Yup.. The guy is really full of himself.

Posted by: Dizzy1205 | January 23, 2009 1:07 PM | Report abuse

NHL Live was talking about it. NHLPA might have something to say about it, so I doubt its a done deal.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 1:13 PM | Report abuse

It better be in the contract for him to do that.

I understand why it should be in the contract though. High profile players, and high profile sponsors that want those players there even if they are injured. There are photo opps, and sponsored events..ect..

NHL is a business, and they need to make money too.

Posted by: SA-Town | January 23, 2009 1:19 PM | Report abuse

shall we discuss conspiracy theories?

Ok how would the NHL know before the season that Boston would be number 1 and the Caps number 2 when they made the schedule before the season?

Posted by: cocorules | January 23, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

They didnt.. but I bet you they knew Crosby would be first in fan voting!

Posted by: Dizzy1205 | January 23, 2009 1:29 PM | Report abuse

cocorules, I'm not saying they knew that we would be playing each other, but that its interesting that they have just recently decided that suspension was a possibility. None of the other teams with non-injured "absentees" are playing "quality" opponents.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 1:35 PM | Report abuse

And I'm not really into conspiracy theories, it was sort of a sarcastic thing. An interesting tidbit to provoke thought and discussion.

i can't wait for next weekend with the back to back 12:30 games

Posted by: _stevo | January 23, 2009 1:49 PM | Report abuse

someone just asked tarik a question about schultz and pretty much said exactly what I thought about schultz. Tarik's answer was he was a work in progress aka he sucks

Posted by: _stevo | January 23, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, hey now. Leave 55 alone. He is a work in progress. He's young. Honestly tell me you had all your $h!t together at 22. Erskine probably sucked at 22, too.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Looking forward to the games but I don't like the 12:30 start. Red Wings Sat. night would be killer. 12:30. . . pretty OK. Ottawa the next day? Aside from seeing whether the Caps can focus on not making the same mistakes, it's a bit of a snooze mid-day sunday.

Posted by: Sonyask | January 23, 2009 2:15 PM | Report abuse

@jmu

erskine has or never will suck. come on you know that. as for me having my sh*t together at 22....

Posted by: _stevo | January 23, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

@sonya

are you REALLY adopting this attitude? we are 1-1-1 with the senators.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 23, 2009 2:21 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, yeah, my point exactly. And I'm not sure Erskine never sucked. Around the time he was 22, 49 GP over the two seasons, his +/- was a stellar -7, 2G, 1A, 91 PIMs. He sucked.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

the people who say the caps play up or down to people are the same people who make comments like that regarding ottawa.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 23, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

The Caps love the pre-Super Bowl game, and have done it for years.

Is that Red Wings game nationally televised on NBC?

To have the day game on Super Bowl Sunday, they had to have a day game on Sat too.

Posted by: SA-Town | January 23, 2009 2:36 PM | Report abuse

@jmu

erroneous..on all accounts

Posted by: _stevo | January 23, 2009 2:37 PM | Report abuse

So it sounds like if Backstrom isnt on the next thing smokin to Montreal, he has to miss his next game. Did I read that report on TSN right?

Does anyone know if he still intends to miss the game?

Was there ever a replacement announced for him?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 23, 2009 2:46 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, =O, how?!?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr,
I'm not sure the PA will allow the league to suspend them, but I think Backs is in Sweden. Perron is his replacement.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 2:51 PM | Report abuse

backstrom isnt going to be suspended, but they may suspended datsyuk and lindstrom

@jmu
erskine sucks? come on now, you know that wont fly with me

Posted by: _stevo | January 23, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr, GMGM will announce that Backstrom has a previously undisclosed vison problem (hair too long) and that he's going to Sweden for treatment (visiting his favorite stylist).

Posted by: koalatek | January 23, 2009 2:55 PM | Report abuse

vision. It's Friday.

Think Crosby can use the few days off to try and find an apartment to live in?

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | January 23, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, I said "sucked". Past tense?
koalatek, very well done.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 23, 2009 2:58 PM | Report abuse

"Think Crosby can use the few days off to try and find an apartment to live in?"

I laughed at work, nicely played.

Posted by: _jordan | January 23, 2009 3:10 PM | Report abuse

@jmu

i guess i can let it slide

Posted by: _stevo | January 23, 2009 3:11 PM | Report abuse

who cares the nhl all star game has been a joke for my entire life, i only watch the skills competition because thats the only time the players show their skills and let loose. It doesnt even mean anything to the players or fans, its only a big deal to corporate sponsors who pay for it all and know nothing about hockey.

Posted by: hockeynightincanada | January 23, 2009 3:14 PM | Report abuse

FWIW, the ESPN story on the suspension says that the YoungStars game is not included in the suspension policy.

Posted by: koalatek | January 23, 2009 3:35 PM | Report abuse

koalatek, good news!

There are more photos on that site too, mainly of the YoungStars guys.

Oh. Good. LORD!

Schultz does not suck. He's starting to make hits, he's starting to make plays. I've watched him improve this year with almost every game.

Does he screw up on occasion? Of course he does. Who doesn't.

But he doesn't suck.

He's 22, for Pete's sake! How long has he been 6'6" tall? He seems underweight for that height, at least for a professional athlete (and eff what the Gummint says about "ideal" height and weight!), like he shot up in height and hasn't caught up with himself yet weight-wise... And how many perfect 22-year-olds do YOU know?

@koalatek - Haha! Cute.

Posted by: irockthered | January 23, 2009 4:15 PM | Report abuse

I'd be the last person to be calling out any of our players. But those of you calling out Schultz, any chance you guys have ever played on an NHL team and faced the same type of skilled players he does on a regular basis AND top that off with people commenting on the mistakes you make on the ice? Just food for thought. If Schultz sucks, make sure you've skated a mile in his skates before you go mouthing off on him. Five bucks says if people took a poll at your workplace, you might be surprised at the number of people who would want you traded.
